Catholic Church made their own bed by excommunicating Luther.

As long as there was just ONE "true [Christian] religion", the Pope could justify its role as the one and only arbiter of Christ's message.

From a purely strategic POV, Pope Leo was stupid to kick Luther out. Luther didn't want to start a new religion, just to reform the existing Church. With a few concessions, Pope could have kept it together.

For at least awhileโ€ฆ.
