They aren't Hezbollah

Lebanese Army Officers Among 9 Killed In Israeli Airstrike On South Lebanon

In a rare, major development related to the Israel-Hezbollah war, fresh Saturday Israeli airstrikes on Southern Lebanon on Saturday took out a group of Lebanese Army forces.

What's more is that several officers were reported killed: "Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon Saturday killed nine people including three members of the Lebanese military, the Lebanese army and state media said, days after the two sides reached a new ceasefire deal," The Associated Press reports.

"An airstrike on the road linking the city of Nabatiyeh with the town of Marjayoun occurred in the morning killing a brigadier general, a captain and another soldier, the army said without immediately releasing their names," the report continues.

"The continued, deliberate, and repeated Israeli aggression against Lebanon, its people and its army only strengthens our resolve, faith and determination," the Lebanese national forces said in its statement.

It accused Israel of thwarting all efforts "to reach a solution that would restore stability, establish a comprehensive ceasefire and lead to the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories."

According to the BBC:

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it has launched an investigation after confirming it attacked a vehicle carrying Lebanese soldiers in southern Lebanon on Saturday morning.

The Lebanese Army said two officers and a soldier were killed in the strike on a car, which it described as an "aggressive and barbaric raid". The IDF said the vehicle was "moving suspiciously towards forces" and gunfire had been reported in the area.

Currently Washington is applying immense pressure on the national government and army to move to 'disarm' Hezbollah; however, the Shia paramilitary group has long been the most well-armed and powerful faction in Lebanon, and is seen by most analysts as stronger than even the national army.

This is partly because the United States severely limits the kind of weaponry the Lebanese armed forces can possess, essentially sanctioning the army, on fears these weapons could be turned on Israel.

Many Lebanese have criticized him for criticizing Hezbollah instead of heaping all the blame on the invading Israeli military.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also responded, stating sarcastically in a post on X Saturday that given Aoun's comments, "one would think it’s Iran that has occupied a fifth of Lebanon, displaced a quarter of Lebanese and is bombing his country on daily basis."

"Had Lebanon been a bargaining chip for Iran, we’d have a deal long ago. Save Lebanon from your real foe, Mr. President," Araghchi wrote in reference to Israel.

US wants to send frozen Iranian assets to Gulf allies – media

Tehran is demanding access to its funds as part of any lasting peace deal with Washington

The Trump administration is seeking to redirect frozen Iranian assets toward rebuilding energy and other infrastructure damaged by Tehran’s retaliatory strikes in Gulf Arab states hosting US military bases, Bloomberg and CBS News have reported.

The Treasury Department plans to use “all available authorities” to make Iranian assets accessible for rebuilding and repair efforts linked to any future damage caused by Iran, CBS reported on Saturday, citing a source familiar with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s thinking.

Bloomberg reported that Bessent has directed Treasury officials to assess conditions among US allies in the Persian Gulf and request comprehensive estimates for damage inflicted since the start of the conflict. The outlet said the department will also consider whether Iranian assets could be used to cover “past damage,” blamed on Iran-backed groups.

The initiative comes as indirect talks between Washington and Tehran have stalled over Iran’s demand for access to frozen funds. Mohsen Rezaei, a military adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, said on Friday that a deal hinges on the release of $24 billion in Iranian assets.

“This is our own money, not America’s money,” Rezaei told CNN, calling the demand a test of trust for US President Donald Trump.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Mehr News Agency that Tehran wants at least $12 billion released immediately upon the signing of any memorandum of understanding with the US, while the remainder should be released within “not more than one or two months.”

Since the US and Israel launched their attack on Iran on February 28, the sides have largedly refrained from directly targeting oil and gas infrastructure. However, in mid-March Israel hit the world’s largest natural gas field in South Pars, knocking out 12% of Iran’s gas production.

Tehran declared that energy infrastructure in Gulf Arab states hosting US forces had become “direct and legitimate targets.” Energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain have all sustained damage in tit-for-tat strikes, before a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire took effect in April.

Washington reportedly promised to unblock some Iranian assets to bring Tehran to the negotiating table in Islamabad, although it publicly rejected the demand as unacceptable. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized his predecessor Barack Obama for allegedly sending Iran billions of dollars in “pallets of cash” under the 2015 nuclear deal, which Trump unilaterally withdrew from during his first term.

America Just Sold It's Helium - Now There's a Shortage

In March 2026, one Iranian missile took out 33% of the world's helium supply. America sold its 100-year-old strategic reserve 20 months earlier — for less than the cost of a B-2 bomber. This is the story of how the most strategically critical industrial gas on Earth — the one that cools every MRI machine, powers every AI chip, pressurizes every Falcon 9 rocket, and keeps the James Webb Space Telescope alive — ended up dependent on a single Persian Gulf chokepoint, at the exact moment the United States was spending half a trillion dollars to bring semiconductor manufacturing home.

Ukraine launches blitz on Russia after Putin snubs peace talks offer

Ukraine has hit a Russian military base and other targets near St Petersburg with a bombardment of long-range drones early on Saturday.

It came just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected an offer from his Ukrainian counterpart to meet for peace talks.

Residents of Russia’s second-largest city were told - for the first time since the conflict began in 2022 - not to leave their homes after the large-scale Ukrainian drone attack covered a distance of about 1,000 kilometres.

Russian authorities called the attack “unprecedented”, with Gov Aleksandr Drozdenko of the Leningrad region around the city announcing that more than 140 drones had been shot down.

St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said three people sustained minor injuries in the barrage.

The attack ignited a fire at an unspecified military facility, causing “insignificant” damage and the evacuation of some residents, he said.

China conducted special law enforcement operation east of Taiwan

According to the news agency, this operation was a necessary response to the unilateral statement by Japan and the Philippines to begin negotiations on the delimitation of the maritime border east of Taiwan Island

China has organized a special law enforcement operation in the waters to the east of Taiwan, Xinhua news agency said.

"This operation was a necessary response to the unilateral statement by Japan and the Philippines to begin negotiations on the delimitation of the maritime border east of Taiwan Island, which seriously undermines China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights," the news agency said. The Fujian Provincial Maritime Safety Authority, the Guangdong Provincial Maritime Safety Authority, the East China Sea Shipping Support Center, and the East China Sea Rescue Authority took part in the maneuvers.

The goals of the operation are to fully exercise powers to ensure compliance with China's maritime administrative law, strengthen patrolling capabilities in deep waters, control the movement of ships in key waters, ensure the safety of maritime traffic and protect national interests, Xinhua said.

Armenia arrests six opposition candidates on the eve of key elections

The authorities in Yerevan stopped short of banning the ruling party’s main rival, Strong Armenia

The Armenian authorities have detained six parliamentary candidates from the opposition Strong Armenia bloc a day before the country heads to the polls in Sunday’s general election.

During recent televised debates, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who came to power in 2018 following the ‘Velvet Revolution’, called for the revocation of the registration of several major opposition groups.

The Central Election Commission refused to remove Strong Armenia from the ballot, but approved requests for criminal proceedings and pre-trial detention of six candidates: Hayk Avagyan, Susan Badalyan, Artur Abrahamyan, Vahe Tavakalyan, Vahe Yeghiazaryan, and Ashot Sahakyan.

“In the course of the preliminary investigation into a criminal case concerning the material inducement of numerous individuals and the laundering of funds on an especially large scale, public criminal prosecution has been initiated against six parliamentary candidates from the Strong Armenia bloc,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement on Saturday, adding that all six were placed under arrest.

Opposition groups accused the authorities of exerting immense pressure ahead of the vote, in which Pashinyan’s ruling Civil Contract party – which has been pushing for closer integration with the EU while maintaining traditionally close relations with Russia – is expected to remain the largest single party in parliament, but could fall short of forming a one-party majority government.

Pashinyan’s leadership is being contested by a heavily fractured opposition of 17 parties and political blocs. The Strong Armenia bloc, led by Russian-Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, is polling second, although figures vary widely depending on the pollster, how many parties cross the 4% threshold, and how the roughly 30% of undecided voters split. Should Civil Contract fail to secure a majority of seats, coalition talks among its rivals are not guaranteed to succeed.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the Armenian authorities of undermining democratic procedures, warning that this casts doubt on the legitimacy of the election. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev accused Pashinyan of “trying to knock out all his rivals in the elections.”

Moscow warned that closer integration with the EU would make Armenia’s continued membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) impossible due to incompatible standards. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in May that the country could lose up to 14% of GDP if it leaves the economic organization.

Earlier this month, former President Robert Kocharyan warned that Pashinyan’s government is “artificially” turning Armenia into an enemy of Russia and leading the country down the same path as Ukraine.
