Thor's Helmet
Thor not only has his own day (Thursday), but a helmet in the heavens. Popularly called Thor's Helmet, NGC 2359 is a hat-shaped cosmic cloud with wing-like appendages. Heroically sized even for a Norse god, Thor's Helmet is about 30 light-years across. In fact, the cosmic head-covering is more like an interstellar bubble, blown by a fast wind from the bright, massive star near the bubble's center. Known as a Wolf-Rayet star, the central star is an extremely hot giant thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova stage of evolution. NGC 2359 is located about 15,000 light-years away toward the constellation of the Great Overdog. This sharp image is a combination of deep images taken in light emitted by hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue). The star in the center of Thor's Helmet is expected to explode in a spectacular supernova sometime within the next few thousand years.

Catch Comet 220P McNaught in Outburst
June 08, 2026 06:04 PM UTC
Comet 220P McNaught bursts into telescopic view, low in the dawn sky.
We had a surprise outburst late last week, from a lesser known periodic comet. Posts flashed across message boards late last week, alerting comet watchers to a dramatic change in brightness for periodic comet 220P McNaught.
Though it wasn’t on our list for bright comets to watch for in 2026, Comet 220P is now in range of binoculars or a small telescope, low to the east at dawn as it heads towards perihelion this coming weekend.
The comet is the first of 18 comets discovered by prolific Australian observer Robert McNaught. McNaught found the comet as a +17th magnitude smudge on images captured by Siding Spring Observatory on the night of May 20th, 2004.
The outburst was first noted by observer Mike Kelley, looking at images from the Zwicky Transient Facility. The comet brightened by a respectable 7 magnitudes on June 1st. That’s a 600-fold increase in brightness.
Later backup observations suggested the comet topped out at +8th magnitude, representing an amazing 8,000 times increase in brightness. Clearly, something interesting is going on with comet 220P.
The European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission gave us a closeup look at what a cometary outburst looks like, when Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko blew its top:
The comet reaches perihelion on June 14th, 2026 at 1.6 Astronomical Units (AU) from the Sun, just outside of the orbit of Mars.
On a 5.5 year orbit, the comet was likely captured by Jupiter in its present day passage, as it just lags behind sharing a 2:1 resonance with the gas giant planet.
Finding the Comet
First, the good news: the comet is well-placed for northern hemisphere observers, around 65 degrees from the Sun in June. The bad news is, it’s an early morning object.
For folks up north nearing the June solstice, this means walking the thin line time-wise between when the comet breaks 10 degrees above the eastern horizon, and the approach of dawn.
For example, from here in southern Virginia near latitude 37 degrees north, this meant a 4AM wake up to grab the comet.
It was a cinch to grab with a DwarfMini smartscope, which listed it in the database under ‘220P’:
Comet 220P is currently hanging out in the dawn sky in the constellation Pisces, very near the planet Saturn. The comet crosses the ecliptic southward on June 9th, and passes less than 2 degrees from Saturn on June 16th.
The -32% illuminated, waning crescent Moon passes just over a degree north of the pair on the morning of June 10th.
We can hope this outburst holds, and that more could well be in store.
The 9-plus change in magnitude in total edges out the 2013 outburst from Comet 289P/Blanpain as the biggest and most abrupt outburst since Comet 17P Holmes in 2007.
That eruption put Comet 17P into naked eye range around +3rd magnitude in Perseus, that very night.
Comets give us an element of unpredictability, in an otherwise clockwork Universe.
Be sure to follow Comet 220P McNaught through perihelion and beyond this weekend… it might just steal the celestial show this summer.

Crew Begins Week with More Cartilage Printing and Plant Harvesting
June 8, 2026 2:14PM
Expedition 74 began the week bioprinting human cartilage tissue and harvesting alfalfa plants aboard the International Space Station to advance health and promote self-sustainable space crews.
The orbital residents also retrieved materials exposed to the external space environment and conducted their own ultrasound vein scans to continuously learn how living in space affects physics and biology.
NASA flight engineer Jessica Meir opened up the Kibo laboratory module’s Life Science Glovebox on Monday and set up a bioprinter to produce viable cartilage tissues aboard the orbiting laboratory.
NASA flight engineer Chris Williams assisted Meir collecting the frozen cartilage samples for thawing then mixing the living cells with a gel-like bioink for placement in a printing cartridge.
The biotechnology study tests the manufacturing of cartilage in weightlessness to increase its stability for printing on demand implants using a patient’s own cells to treat a range of health conditions.
Earlier, Williams began his shift with NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway harvesting alfalfa plants inside the Columbus laboratory module’s Veggie facility.
The astronauts collected the plants and roots for photographing, placed the botanical samples inside foil, then stowed them inside a science freezer for later analysis for the Veg-06 study.
Insights may lead to the development of advanced methods to grow plants for food on future space missions.
Afterward, Hathaway scanned Williams neck, shoulder, and leg veins using the Ultrasound 3 biomedical device as doctors on the ground monitored in real time.
Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev also took turns scanning each other’s veins with the Ultrasound 3. The ultrasound imagery will help researchers protect crew members from space-caused blood clots.
Flight engineer Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and Meir joined each other during the first half of their shift retrieving containers of samples from Kibo’s airlock that were placed outside the orbital outpost for a materials exposure test.
The samples included radiation shields, crew suit fabrics, optical fibers, and more to help engineers build robust technologies that can survive harsh environments both on Earth and in space.
Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev, the orbiting lab’s commander and flight engineer, spent the majority of their shift inspecting and servicing the Zvezda service module’s treadmill. The space station’s other treadmill, COLBERT, is located in the Tranquility module.
Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev spent the first half of his shift locating and identifying computer components and video gear in the Zarya module to update the station’s inventory management system.
Fedyaev wrapped up his day studying using artificial intelligence tools to boost crew efficiency and communications.

Is America ready for a nuclear explosion in space?
06/09/26 10:00 AM ET
Gen. Stephen Whiting, the commander of U.S. Space Command, recently made waves when he publicly discussed a major threat that America’s newest military branch recently war-gamed — that of an adversary detonating a nuclear weapon in space.
At first blush, the scenario seems far-fetched. In truth, though, it is a real possibility.
More than a year ago, in February 2024, House Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) was already raising the alarm that Russia could place a space-based nuclear device into orbit. That possibility was later confirmed by the Pentagon.
The White House grasps the danger. A December 2025 Executive Order on Space Superiority directs the country’s relevant agencies to create “a space security strategy that accounts for United States interests in, from, and to space” and “a technology plan for detecting, characterizing, and countering potential adversary placement of nuclear weapons in space.” That strategy, moreover, is expected as soon as June 16.
This public call to action is notable. It marks the first time an unclassified document has publicly directed a response to a nuclear weapon in space. It also reflects the gravity of what is an increasingly plausible threat.
After spending several months conducting a deep dive into this subject, we at the American Foreign Policy Council have come to the same ominous conclusions.
Space-based nuclear weapons are a serious matter, and one that deserves the very highest level of national attention.
Talk of a nuclear detonation generally triggers visions of cities being destroyed and mushroom clouds. The effects differ when a detonation occurs at a high altitude.
While explosions near space, or in space, may not have immediate destructive effects here on Earth, they can prove equally devastating.
Even a relatively small nuclear device, detonated at the right place in low Earth orbit, would have a catastrophic impact on U.S. and allied interests.
1/2
That is because, while space itself is enormous, the vast majority of modern spacecraft (nearly 90 percent) are in low Earth orbit, most of them satellites.
Both the American and the global economy rely on these systems for everything from the functioning of the Internet to aircraft navigation and ship tracking, at a cost of billions of dollars daily, and trillions annually.
Moreover, our intelligence agencies and the U.S. military rely extensively on satellites to detect the movement of adversary ships, aircraft and tanks; to track ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles; and to communicate with our overseas forces.
And in the near future, advanced capabilities will allow the U.S. Space Force to globally track everything that moves in the skies or on the ground in real time, in addition to all weather across the entire globe.
A space-based nuclear explosion anywhere could be damaging, but one in low Earth orbit would be crippling.
If a nuclear weapon were detonated above this range, in a medium, higher Earth or geostationary orbit, the blast effects would basically only destroy satellites within a few kilometers.
But a nuclear weapon detonated in low Earth orbit would be far more devastating, because it would interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. The resulting radiation would be so strong, it would basically destroy everything in low Earth orbit in under a week’s time — leaving more than 10,000 derelict satellites on intersecting orbits with no way to avoid each other. The resulting destruction would be massive. A nuclear detonation there would truly be a weapon of mass destruction.
Worse still, repopulating those space assets after a detonation would be extremely complicated. We lack a stockpile of military (or civilian) satellites that are radiation-hardened, that could serve as replacements for the dead ones in orbit.
Nor do we have proven technology available for deployment in space to reduce the harsh radiation. Finally, we have not yet invested in the technologies that would allow us to build build the satellites needed to replenish low Earth orbit quickly and efficiently.
By next week, the Department of Defense and intelligence community should have an actionable plan to deal with this gargantuan problem — or at least the start of one.
Congress needs to stand ready to resource it. Moreover, as we have recommended, it should catalyze investments in space traffic management models, commercial “what if” agreements, radiation remediation technology, radiation-hardened replenishment, and long-term investments in an in-space industrial base above the threat.
Putting such a plan in place is a necessary start. But it will necessitate political will and resolute action on the part of the U.S. government. Otherwise, we risk being left in the dark.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers honored for role in creating U.S. Space Force
June 9, 2026
The Air Force Historical Foundation honored U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) with its top space award for his role in creating the U.S. Space Force.
Rogers received the General John W. “Jay” Raymond Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the making of Space Force history.
The award is named after the service’s first chief of space operations, a career missile and space officer who has been called the “father of the Space Force.”
Raymond oversaw the standup of new organizations, the transfer of personnel from other military branches, and the service’s early culture before retiring in 2023.
When the Space Force was first formed, it was critical to have strong leadership. There could not have been a better choice for the first Chief of Space Operations than General Jay Raymond.
Rogers, who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, spearheaded the creation of the Space Force through the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act alongside then-U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN).
The Space Force became the first new branch of the U.S. military since 1947. President Trump later directed U.S. Space Command’s permanent headquarters to Huntsville, a fight Rogers led from his Armed Services perch for years.
In March, it was announced that Space Command HQ would break ground next year and be operational by 2031.

Russia’s UN envoy dismisses Zelensky ‘PR stunt’
9 Jun, 2026 09:14 | Updated 9 Jun, 2026 13:04
The Ukrainian leader won’t consider genuine talks while Western funding continues, Vassily Nebenzia has stated
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin was a publicity stunt rather than a sincere invitation to peace talks, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has said.
Zelensky published the message last week after Putin again stated that Moscow remained open to diplomacy with Kiev. In the letter, the Ukrainian leader accused the Russian president of wrongdoing and called for a direct one-on-one meeting, which he claimed could help bring an end to the conflict.
Addressing a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, Nebenzia dismissed the letter as another example of Ukrainian “megaphone diplomacy,” accusing Kiev of having “openly embarked on the path of terrorism.”
According to the Russian envoy, the message “is by no means a peace initiative, but rather a clumsy provocation designed to camouflage Kiev’s desperate attempts to derail any negotiations.”
Russia has no intention “of participating in mock negotiations or performances staged for the public.”
‘Several pages of rudeness’
Zelensky has repeatedly called for a face-to-face meeting with Putin. However, he has ruled out traveling to Moscow and refused to consider withdrawing Ukrainian troops from Donbass, which Putin said would be enough for Russia to declare a ceasefire.
Putin, responding to the letter, said the conditions don’t currently exist for such a meeting to take place. His foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, characterized Zelensky’s message as “several pages of rudeness,” while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow viewed it as a sign that “Ukraine does not need negotiations.”
Zelensky later met with the leaders of the UK, Germany and France in London.
Their joint statement demanded an immediate ceasefire and reiterated plans to deploy NATO troops to Ukraine after the conflict with Russia is over. Moscow has repeatedly ruled out such an arrangement.
The Zelensky-Putin exchange took place while the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was underway. During the event, Ukrainian forces launched several drone attacks targeting Russia’s second-largest city.
West funding Zelensky’s ‘terrorism’ – Moscow
Nebenzia pointed to recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilians, including a drone strike on a school dormitory in Starobelsk, as well as attacks on a bus and a train carrying passengers from Moscow to Simferopol.
He argued that the West’s refusal to acknowledge victims of Ukrainian attacks reflects a form of political screening, in which “some victims are declared worthy of sympathy, while others are deliberately erased” in order to shield Kiev from scrutiny.
He said that despite Kiev’s criminality and corruption, Ukraine continues to receive unconditional political and financial backing from foreign governments.
Nebenzia claimed Western leaders tolerate Zelensky’s policies because they have turned Ukraine into “expendable cannon fodder” in a “senseless crusade” against Russia.
The envoy further alleged that Western officials know Zelensky and his inner circle are profiting from foreign aid, but continue providing “handouts” in order to prolong the conflict.

Ukrainian drones hit Chonhar Bridge once again
9 June, 18:38
Ukrainian forces carried out another drone attack on the Chonhar Bridge connecting temporarily occupied Crimea and Kherson Oblast on the night of 8-9 June.
Source: Ukraine's 1st Separate Assault Regiment
Details: The attack was carried out using Ukrainian-made FP-2 drones. The operation involved drone pilots from the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, the CODE 9.2 unit (475th Separate Assault Regiment), and fighters from the Falanha Multi-Domain Operations Centre.
"A second attack was carried out tonight. The bridge itself was not destroyed, but it had been closed to traffic for a considerable period," said Perun, commander of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment.
The 1st Separate Assault Regiment reported that its fighters are monitoring movements and repair work in the area of the bridge and are "prepared to make long-range adjustments at any moment".
"This operation is just the beginning. With this operation, we make it clear to the enemy that assault troops can now and will conduct operations not only on the ground, but also at medium-range distances," said Profi, spokesman for the 1st Separate Assault Regiment.
Background: The Ukrainian military has attacked a bridge near Chonhar for the second time in three days.
On 7 June, fighters from the 475th and 1st Special Forces Regiments struck it using Behemot drones and UAVs manufactured by Fire Point. They said they had created holes in the bridge with a diameter of about one metre.

One terrorists killed, one fled after infiltrating northern Israel, shooting at IDF troops
"We do not rule out the possibility that this was a terrorist who stayed underground or barricaded in a building for a very long time and decided to come out," one military source said.
Two Hezbollah terrorists fired on an IDF unit on Tuesday near the fence at the Ramim ridge.
A preliminary investigation indicates that one of the attackers was killed, while the second terrorist's status is still unknown.
The IDF Northern Command is investigating the origin of the attack. Scouts have been dispatched to the area to assist.
"We do not rule out the possibility that this was a terrorist who stayed underground or barricaded in a building for a very long time and decided to come out," one military source said.
Earlier Tuesday, the IDF carried out multiple strikes in the city of Tyre, following statements by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, as well as yesterday’s clashes with Iran.

Northern Israel's Ramat David Air Base struck during Iran conflict, satellite images appear to show
The IDF did not respond to The Jerusalem Post's inquiry for clarification about the issue, nor did it respond to Yediot Aharonot, which first reported Soar Atlas's X post.
Satellite imagery published by Soar Atlas early Tuesday morning on X/Twitter may indicate that Ramat David Air Base in the North may have been struck during the recent escalation in conflict with Iran over Sunday-Monday.
Comparing satellite footage from Monday to footage from June 5, it is possible to see what appears to be the impact of a strike at a hangar at the base, which is near Migdal Ha'emek in northern Israel.
It is not clear from the imagery what the extent of the damage would be or what would have been damaged.

US Navy uses cutting-edge new drone boat to rescue Apache pilots who crashed near Strait of Hormuz
June 9, 2026, 7:35 a.m. PT
A US drone boat conducted a first-of-its-kind rescue mission to save the crew of an American Apache helicopter that crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the military said.
The unmanned vessel, powered by artificial intelligence, located the crew who had been stuck for two hours in the waters off the coast of Oman, bringing them to shore, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The operation marks the first time a high-tech US Navy drone deployed to the Middle East was used to conduct a rescue mission.
The military is currently investigating if the helicopter was shot down by Iranian forces as tensions remain high along the Strait of Hormuz.
The Navy previous deployed a Seahawk medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV) with an aircraft carrier group.

NATO launches Task Force X-Arctic to strengthen awareness in the Arctic and the High North
06 June 2026
On Saturday (6 June 2026), the NATO Research Vessel Alliance departed La Spezia, Italy, for the High North and Arctic, marking the start of Task Force X (TFX)-Arctic – NATO’s new initiative to strengthen the Alliance's awareness and presence in the region.
TFX-Arctic falls under NATO’s Rapid Adoption Action Plan approved at the 2025 NATO Summit in The Hague, which aims at accelerating innovation adoption and integration into military operations.
It builds on experience gained from the conduct of TFX-Baltic, launched in January 2025 to enhance the security of critical undersea infrastructures in the Baltic Sea region.
Led by Allied Command Transformation (ACT), TFX-Arctic is designed to demonstrate, for the first time, how networked uncrewed systems, under ultimate human control, can deliver persistent multi-domain situational awareness across the North Atlantic, the Arctic and the High North.
"Task Force X-Arctic is about testing and integrating new technology in one of the most demanding operational environments on the planet," said Admiral Pierre Vandier, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation.
"It will help Allies define the standards of the future and maintain the fighting edge required to operate, adapt and prevail in the High North."
The NATO Research Vessel is due to stop off the shore of Iceland for the first phase of an 18-month programme of experimentation.
For three weeks, the vessel, crewed and operated by the Italian Navy, will serve as the experimentation platform for autonomous systems and technologies from innovative companies selected through NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA).
NATO’s Science & Technology Organization’s Centre for Maritime Research & Experimentation (CMRE) is the technical lead, responsible for the mission’s delivery.
"CMRE has been leading the development of autonomous capabilities for the most challenging maritime environments," said Dr Eric Pouliquen, CMRE Director.
"Task Force X-Arctic puts that experience to work for the Alliance, delivering real capability in real Arctic conditions."
The testing of technologies, as well as their inter-connectivity and data-sharing in Arctic conditions, will continue throughout 2026 and into next year, with a full-scale demonstration planned for the summer of 2027.
Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) oversees the integration of assets and technologies into maritime operations.
Task Force X-Arctic supports Arctic Sentry, NATO's enhanced vigilance activity in the Arctic and the High North under the command of NATO’s Joint Force Command (JFC) Norfolk.

Filmmaker predicts World Cup could mark first contact between aliens and humans
8 June 2026
The global sporting competition kicks off on Thursday (11.06.26) at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico, and Mark Christopher Lee thinks it could be the perfect opportunity for extraterrestrials to make their first official contact with humanity.
Lee, a renowned UFO investigator, author and director of documentaries including UFO Encounters of the 5th Kind and God Versus Aliens, made his allegations amid an “undeniable” pattern of UFO activity linked to soccer stadiums and major tournaments.
He explained: “The pattern is undeniable. From Florence in 1954, where a packed stadium became a UFO viewing platform, to modern World Cup venues, soccer has repeatedly been interrupted or overshadowed by the unexplained.
“With the 2026 tournament about to kick off amid unprecedented UAP transparency from the U.S. government, we may be days or weeks away from the moment the world has been waiting for – live disclosure before the largest global audience in human history.”
The incident Lee referred to in Florence took part during a friendly match between Fiorentina and their local rivals at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the Italian city, on 27 October, 1954.
The game was halted when cigar-shaped, egg-like silvery objects took to the sky, performing acrobatic manoeuvres in the sky.
When the referee suspended play, footballers including Italian sports legend Ardico Magnini, and 10,000 fans looked up to the sky - stunned by what they were seeing.
As the mysterious objects departed, they left behind “angel hair” - silvery thread-like strands determined by scientists at the University of Florence to contain boron, silicon, magnesium, and calcium - which disintegrated quickly when touched.
The 1954 event sparked a string of UFO sightings across Tuscany and Europe later that year.
Meanwhile, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, a “stingray-shaped” UFO was spotted in the sky above Nizhny Novgorod Stadium - with a video of the bizarre event quickly going viral.
While a sighting was also reported in 2023 above Mexico’s FC Juárez Bravos stadium, as well as others near major stadiums worldwide.
Lee continued to urge football fans to keep an eye on the skies, as well as the pitch.
He concluded: “If my prediction is correct, the final whistle of the 2026 World Cup could also mark the beginning of a new era for humanity.”

VIDEO: ‘Shape-Changing’ UFO Reported Outside Roswell, Idaho
June 8, 2026
A recent investigation by an unidentified aerial phenomena research center based in Washington State has concluded that objects in the sky seen by three witnesses in southwestern Idaho were likely two planets.
Until just this week, I didn't know that southern Idaho had its own community that shares the same name as a famous alleged 1947 UFO crash site southeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Roswell, Idaho, is an actual place, and approximately 40 miles east of the unincorporated community, three witnesses reported what they believed was a shape-changing, multi-colored UFO in the sky near an apartment building on Friday, June 5.
Witnesses Recorded What They Believed To Be A UFO East Of Roswell, Idaho, On The Evening Of June 5, 2026
Roswell, Idaho, might not be as famous as Roswell, New Mexico, which is located nearly 1,200 miles southeast of the Gem State map point, but the two sites do get their share of UFO sightings annually.
Roswell, Idaho, is just south of Parma, and this region of the state is one of the top spots for yearly unexplained aerial sightings statewide.
Less than a week ago, three witnesses at an apartment complex watched as two massive bright objects could be seen in the sky. They reported the objects as capable of changing shape and color, and causing a disturbance among area animals.
'Most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen. Started to get an ominous feeling like it was aware of me, so I went inside,' commented one of the witnesses in the published report from the National UFO Reporting Center in Washington State.
The incident report (198315) also includes an 18-second video that shows the two objects in the sky.

🎙 ABOUT EDGAR MITCHELL
Dr. Edgar Mitchell (1930–2016) was the sixth man to walk on the Moon, lunar module pilot of Apollo 14.
After his Moon mission he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in 1973, dedicated to studying consciousness, intuition, and the science of inner experience.
In his later years he was a vocal advocate for ET disclosure and openly investigated the Roswell incident, drawing on testimony from a U.S. military major who had worked the case.
This Sunday lecture delivered via Skype is one of his on-record discussions of both Apollo and disclosure.
