Ukrainian drone hits Moscow-Crimea passenger train – governor

The attack killed the assistant driver and injured the train driver, according to Sergey Aksyonov

A Ukrainian UAV attack on a passenger train in Crimea has left one person deadand another injured, regional Governor Sergey Aksyonov has said.

The train was traveling between Moscow and Simferopol whenthe locomotive was hit by an “enemy drone,” Aksyonov wrote on Telegram early Monday.

“According to preliminary information, the train driver was injured, the assistant driver was killed, and none of the passengers were hurt,” he said.

Aksyonov expressed condolences to the friends and family of the deceased crew member and wished the injured driver a speedy recovery.

Bus transportation for the train’s passengers is currently being arranged, Aksyonov said, adding that the authorities will provide all necessary assistance.

Following the incident,operator Grand Service Express temporarily suspended services in Crimea, adding that all passengers on its trains on the peninsula were evacuated.

The attack comes days after eight people were killed and 11 others injured in a Ukrainian strike on a passenger bus traveling from Moscow to Simferopol through the Donetsk People’s Republic on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a Ukrainian UAV struck a suburban train travelingbetween Azovskoye and Kerch, Crimea, leaving one passenger dead and several others injured.

Moscowpreviously warned that it would carry out “systematic and consistent strikes”on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, including drone production facilities, command posts, and “decision-making centers,” in response to Kiev’s terrorist attacks. These included an attack on a college dormitory in the town of Starobelsk in the Lugansk People’s Republic, which killed 21 people, mostly teenage girls, and injured 70 others.

Last week,Russian forces launched another large-scale missile and drone barrage, targeting defense industry sites in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as locations in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy Regions, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The eruption of the Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East has sent amassive plume of ash 10 kminto the sky andtriggered red-level aviationalerts for the area and nearby regions.

The ash cloud from Saturday’s eruption stretched 50 km from the volcano as it traveled east toward the Bering Sea, according to the Volcanology and Seismology Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A more powerful explosion that could send ash up to 12 km into the sky “could occur at any time,” the institute warned. A video recorded by scientists and published on social media shows a massive plume of smoke and ash rising into the sky.

It is the second Shiveluch eruption in just a week. On Thursday, the volcano produced an ash column that reached 8 km above sea level.

Shiveluch,one of Kamchatka’s largest and most active volcanoes, has a history of significant eruptions. It is located around 450 km from the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and 50 km from the settlement of Klyuchi.

The previous red-level alert linked to its activity was issued in 2024, when it sent ash up to 8 km high.Another major eruption was reported in January 2026.

Access to frozen assets has emerged as one of Tehran's key demandsin negotiations with Washington, with Iranian officials seekingthe release of at least part of the tens of billions of dollars held abroad.

According to recent media reports, negotiators are discussing a package worth roughly $12 billion that could become available if a preliminary agreement with the United States is reached.

The issue matters becauseeven partial access to blocked funds could affect Iran's currency market, imports, government finances and broader economy.

Iranian officials estimatethat more than $100 billion in assets remain inaccessible because of sanctions, banking restrictions and legal disputes that have accumulated over decades.

Not all of that money would necessarily become available even in the event of an agreement, as some assets remain tied up in court cases and other restrictions unrelated to sanctions.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf recently traveled to Qatar, where discussions reportedly touched on the release of frozen Iranian funds.

Saeed Ajorlou, a member of the media team accompanying Iran's negotiating delegation, said in a televised interview on June 2 that the talks had been successful. He stated that once a framework agreement receives final approval, a portion of Iran's blocked assets should become available to the Central Bank of Iran in a manner that could not easily be reversed.

He also indicated that Tehran is seeking guarantees that access to the funds will continue and has linked the release of assets to the implementation of any future agreement.

Why the funds matter

A large share of Iran's blocked assets consists of oil revenues accumulated in foreign banks after the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018 and reimposed sweeping sanctions.

Secondary sanctions made it difficult for countries purchasing Iranian oil to transfer payments directly to Tehran, causing substantial sums to accumulate in overseas accounts.

Economists say that even partial access to these resources could provide a significant boost to Iran's economy.

One immediate effect would be an increase in the Central Bank's foreign currency reserves, strengthening its ability to manage exchange-rate volatility. Additional funds could also be used to finance infrastructure projects, pay government obligations and support imports of essential goods, industrial equipment, raw materials and technology needed by domestic industries.

South Korea

South Korea once held one of the largest pools of frozen Iranian funds. Roughly $6 billion in oil revenues accumulated in two South Korean banks before being transferred to accounts in Qatar in 2023 as part of a prisoner-exchange agreement between Tehran and Washington.

Although Iranian officials initially described the funds as released, access has remained subject to significant restrictions and the money has largely remained beyond Tehran's direct control.

Iraq

Iraq represents another major source of Iranian claims. Much of the money stems from Iraqi purchases of Iranian natural gas and electricity. While neither side has publicly confirmed an exact figure, Iranian officials have repeatedly said that outstanding payments amount to several billion dollars.

Some of these funds have already been used for humanitarian purchases under arrangements approved by the United States. Estimates suggest that Iran could eventually gain access to between $10 billion and $12 billion held in Iraq if restrictions are eased.

China, India and Japan

China and India present a more complicated picture. Iranian officials often avoid describing funds held in those countries as formally frozen, arguing that mechanisms exist to use at least part of the money for trade and imports.

Nevertheless, transactions remain difficult because banks and intermediaries facilitating such transfers risk exposure to US sanctions.

Iranian estimates placeholdings in China in the tens of billionsof dollars, while funds inIndia are believed to total roughly $7 billion.

Japan also holds Iranian fundslinked to oil sales. Estimatesgenerally range from $1.5 billion to $3 billion, althoughthe exact amount remains unclear. Japanese authorities have occasionally allowed limited payments for humanitarian imports and Iran's obligations to international organizations, but most of the money remains inaccessible.

Europe

In Europe, Iranian assets are spread across multiple countries and financial institutions. Their status is shaped not only by sanctions but also by legal disputes, court rulings and anti-money-laundering regulations.

Total Iranian assets affected by these issues are estimated at anywherefrom several billion dollars to as much as $20 billion.

One of the most prominent disputes involves approximately $1.6 billion to $2 billion connected to accounts belonging to Iran's central bank in Luxembourg. These assets have been tied up in litigation involving efforts by holders of US court judgments to obtaincompensation related to terrorism cases.

While the exact amount of Iranian assets that could ultimately be released remains uncertain, accesseven to a fraction of these funds could strengthen Iran's foreign-exchange reserves, ease pressure on imports and provide the government with a significant financial cushion.

For that reason, frozen assets have become one of the most important economic components of the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

They're getting commercial driver's license in California right now. And when you go through the process, they register you to vote. And there is no check for citizenship. There's no check for ID, there's no check for anything. And they'll register to vote. And you're on the voter rolls."

O'Connor even stated he hasn't lived in Los Angeles County since 2012, and he's STILL being notified by email that his ballot has been mailed to him.

"I don't know who's got it. Whatever address I used to live in has has the Lawrence O'Connor ballot, and I'd love to know if I voted. I probably have without anyone knowing it."

And then comes the issue of ballot harvesting…

"In California, individuals can go and collect ballots from anyone. They can go and knock on the doors and say, 'Hey, give me your ballot. I'll take care of it for you' legally. And those people who knock on your door and collect your ballot, they call it 'ballot harvesting,' they can work for political entities. They can work for political action committees."

"They can go and they can pick and choose what ballots they want to collect. And they bring them in or they don't. And every mail in ballot, there is no ID required for every single mail in or drop box ballot. All you've got to do is sign the ballot. But of course, it would be discriminatory to allow somebody who is illiterate and can't write their name to not vote."

"So when you sign your ballot, you can just make a mark. You can make a smiley face if you want, but it's witnessed. Don't worry. There's a little box for a witness to sign. But of course, there's no name associated with a witness. It's just a signature. And oh, by the way, when those ballots are collected, the witness signature isn't checked."

Trump calls on Thune to fire Senate parliamentarian to pass SAVE America Act

President Trump on Monday called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to “immediately fire” Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough to clear the way forSenate Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot.

“Senate Majority Leader John Thune should immediately fire the parliamentarian, who treats Republicans and everything they stand for horribly!” Trump posted on Truth Social,arguing that she’s an obstacle to enacting the SAVE America Act.

“Just the other night, as an example, she ruled against us on a proposal that would have easily been approved, and should have been, by anyone else,” Trump posted.

“We have every right to change her, and should do so, IMMEDIATELY. As long as she’s there, we will never get our desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, approved, and put into full force and effect!” Trump wrote.

The parliamentarian ruled that the SAVE America Act did not comply with the Senate’s Byrd Rule, which determines what legislation is eligible to be included in a budget reconciliation package that canpass with a simple-majority vote, thereby avoiding a filibuster and 60-vote threshold.

As a result, Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) — two Trump allies —had to ask for 60 votes to waive the budgetary objections in order to consider their proposals to amend the budget reconciliation package with the SAVE America Act.

Both motions fell well short of sixty votes.

When Graham first offered a motion to suspend the budget rules,four Republicans voted “no”: Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.).

Thune has repeatedly pushed back on Trump’s previous calls to fire the parliamentarian.

The president tried to pressure GOP leaders to find a new parliamentarian last month after MacDonough ruled against a provision in the budget reconciliation package to provide $1 billion for security upgrades to the White House, including for the construction of a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

Trump posted on Truth Social on May 20 that the parliamentarian posed a major obstacle to passing the SAVE America Act and other GOP priorities.

“The Dumocrats cheat, lie, and steal, especially when it comes to Votes in Elections, but stick together,whereas the Republicans allow the Elizabeth MacDonoughs of the World to stay in power, and brutalize us. We need THE SAVE AMERICA ACT passed, and NOW,” Trump wrote last month.

Thune at the time shrugged off Trump’s demands to fire the parliamentarian as nothing new and warned doing would only make it tougher to manage the Senate assome Republicans would view such a move as likely to destroy the fabric of the upper chamber, where the minority is accorded more power than in the House.

“That’s, I guess, his opinion. But that would create even more vote issues here if we were to try and do something like that,” Thune said of Trump’s desire to find a new parliamentarian.

Trump on Monday repeated his criticisms of MacDonough as someone who was elevated to her position by then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in 2012 when Barack Obama was president.

He also bashed former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for leaving MacDonough in place after Republicans captured the Senate majority in the 2014 election.

NATO country to stop supplying arms to Ukraine

Bulgaria’s new government has called for negotiations, abandoning its previous policy of arming Kiev

Bulgaria’s new government has announced it will halt weapons deliveries to Ukraine, ==signaling a major policy shift for the NATO and EU member, which has been supplying arms to Kiev since the escalation of the conflict in 2022.=•

The conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield, Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters on Tuesday, arguing that Ukraine’s primary challenge is a shortage of personnel rather than weapons.

”What we are witnessing is a war of attrition, and no matter how much weaponry is amassed, its only result is the loss of human lives,” he said, as quoted by AP.

According to Stoyanov, it is time to sit down at the negotiating table “to seek a just peace that is defined by both sides.”

Ukraine has faced persistent manpower shortages throughout the conflict despite repeated mobilization drives. Kiev has increasingly relied on compulsory conscription to replenish its ranks amid troop shortages, desertions, and draft evasion. The campaign has been marred by reports of forced recruitment, while thousands of military-age men have left the country to avoid being drafted.

Under the previous government, Bulgaria emerged as one of Ukraine’s most important suppliers of Soviet-standard weapons and ammunition. Its shells accounted for roughly one-third of the munitions used by Ukraine during the first year of the conflict, according to Bulgarian former Prime Minister Kirill Petkov and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

New Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, whose Progressive Bulgaria party won the April election,has long been a vocal critic of Brussels’ policy on Ukraine. During his tenure as president between 2022 and 2025, Radev opposed Bulgaria’s embargo on Russian energy, blocked a proposal to send armored vehicles to Ukraine, and consistently advocated for a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

The debate over direct engagement with Moscow has gained momentum within the EU in recent weeks. Several European leaders have floated the idea of appointing a senior envoy to engage with Russia amid concerns that the bloc has been sidelined in previous US-led diplomatic initiatives.

Russia has maintained that continued weapons shipments only prolong the fighting and increase the human cost of the conflict, while undermining prospects for a negotiated settlement.

Israel attacks Lebanese city mentioned in Bible

A deadly strike on Tyre comes amid concerns that the Israeli military wants to control sites sacred to Christians and Muslims

Israel has struck the historic city of Tyre in Lebanon, targeting the Christian quarter for the first time after ordering a partial evacuation. The attack has heightened local concerns over the fate of the city’s revered Biblical heritage sites.

According to Reuters, eight people were killed in a single strike on Tyre’s eastern edge on Tuesday.

The Christian quarter, located in the city’s northwest, had been excluded from previous Israeli warnings and had sheltered people displaced from elsewhere.

The Israeli military issued the blanket evacuation order after claiming that Hezbollah militants were hiding in the quarter, a claim disputed by its residents, local officials, and the Lebanese army.

One of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Tyre is mentioned repeatedly in both the Old and New Testaments. It was a major center of the ancient Phoenician kingdom, which supplied materials for the construction of Solomon’s Temple, believed to have stood on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, the site of the Al-Aqsa compound, one of Islam’s holiest sites.

The development comes amid growing tensions over religious and heritage sites across the region, with critics accusing Israel of expanding its control over locations sacred to Muslims and Christians.

Last month, Israel issued an expropriation order covering the village of Nabi Samwil in the occupied West Bank, home towhat is believed to be the tomb of the Prophet Samuel, a figure revered in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Palestinian officials and religious leaders have condemned the move as an attempt to erase Muslim heritage and strengthen Israeli control over contested holy sites.
