The warrior monks who invented banking
On London's busy Fleet Street, opposite Chancery Lane, is a stone arch through which anyone may step, and travel back in time.
A quiet courtyard houses a strange, circular chapel and a statue of two knights sharing a single horse.
The chapel is Temple Church, consecrated in 1185 as the London home of the Knights Templar.
But Temple Church is not just an important architectural, historical and religious site. It is also London's first bank.
The Knights Templar were warrior monks. A religious order, with a theologically inspired hierarchy, mission statement, and code of ethics, but also heavily armed and dedicated to holy war.
How did they get into the banking game?
The first headquarters of the Knights Templar, on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The Crusaders called it "the Temple of Solomon" and from this location derived their name of Templar.

The cipher is said to have originated with the Hebrew rabbis.
There is evidence that suggests that the Knights Templar utilized a pig-pen cipher during the Christian Crusades.
Variations of this cipher were used by both the Rosicrucian brotherhood and the Freemasons.
George Washington's army had documentation about the system, with a much more randomized form of the alphabet. During the American Civil War, the system was used by Union prisoners in Confederate prisons.

Harrowing footage appeared to show the attacker repeatedly slashing at the man’s face and neck as horrified onlookers screamed “get off”.
One witness could be heard shouting: “He’s trying to cut his head off.”
Cops said Stephen suffered injuries to his eyes as well as slash wounds to his neck and back during the assault in north Belfast.
The shocking attack was only brought to an end after brave bystanders and police officers rushed to intervene.

The poor guy who was attacked by the migrants is special needs, a disabled man who was helping immigrants move in and settle down. One of his eyes was gouged out, the other one is blinded now, and his nose was cut off apparently.
The man attacked was identified as Stephen Ogilvie.
Stephen remains in a serious condition in hospital and is being treated for severe injuries to his eye, face and back.
It is thought that Stephen was vulnerable and recently moved into the same block as his attacker. He has hearing difficulties.
He is originally from Scotland and moved to Belfast.

The announcer at the Saturday night event in Sedalia whipped up the rodeo spectators by asking them if they wanted to see, "Obama run down by a bull?"
Perry Beam, who was among the spectators, said "everybody screamed" and "just went wild."
"It was at that point I began to feel a sense of fear. It was that level of enthusiasm," said Mr Beam, a 48-year-old musician from Higginsville, who released a picture of the antics on his Facebook page.
"It was feeling like some kind of Klan rally you'd see on TV. I've never seen anything so blatantly racist in my life."
Another clown ran up to the one wearing the Obama mask, pretended to tickle him and bobbled the lips on the mask, Mr Beam said.
