Luigi Mangione’s sister secures plum job at one of America’s top hospitals as he awaits murder trial
Luigi Mangione's older sister has secured a plum job at one of America's top hospitals – while the alleged assassin sits in a Brooklyn lockup awaiting trial over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
MariaSanta Mangione, 36, will begin a cardiovascular disease fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland in July, according to an Instagram post from the elite institution.
She is one of only 10 fellows to land a spot in the highly competitive, world-renowned fellowship program.
Mangione will start the prized training spot two months before her 28-year-old Ivy League grad brother goes on trial over the high-profile December 2024 Midtown slaying.
While the accused assassin attended the University of Pennsylvania, his sister has spent more than a decade in medical and scientific research, earning a degree in cell biology and molecular genetics from the University of Maryland, according to her LinkedIn.
Mangione then completed a fiercely selective MD-PhD physician-scientist program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Tennessee in 2020 – four years before her younger brother allegedly carried out the targeted killing.
The dual-trained clinician, who has authored cardiovascular and biomedical research, recently wrapped her cardiology fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Luigi Mangione's murder trial is scheduled to kick off on Sept. 8.
The scion of a wealthy Maryland family faces charges that carry a maximum sentence of 25 years-to-life.
Jurors in the blockbuster Manhattan trial will get a look at the 3D-printed gun Mangione allegedly used to fatally shoot Thompson, along with a twisted manifesto calling to "rebel against the deadly, greed fueled health insurance cartel" by targeting "a company that literally extracts human life force for money."
The accused killer also faces separate federal charges tied to the health care boss's public execution.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
He is being held without bail at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.

Federal case against suspect in killing of Zarutska delayed
The man accused of killing Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail train was ruled incompetent to stand trial by a federal judge on Tuesday.
The judge said Decarlos Brown was incompetent to stand trial. Brown will go to a 4-month treatment program to restore his mental capacity to stand trial, according to the court order.
Brown had several outbursts during the hearing, including telling the judge he had a letter for him from his mom.
Prosecutors said they were confident they could restore his mental capacity in a few months with forced medication.
“This was not unexpected. We have confidence that his capacity will be restored so he can stand trial for what he did to Iryna," Zarutska’s family lawyer said.
Lawyers for Brown said in April that he was incompetent and could not go to trial.
A report from Brown’s time in Central Regional Hospital said the suspect was “incapable of proceeding” in his criminal trial, according to a motion filed by Brown’s lawyer in Mecklenburg County Court in April.
The charges in Mecklenburg County are separate from the federal case that the judge ruled on Tuesday.
The defense for Brown argues that a hearing on whether he is competent cannot go forward while Brown is still in federal custody. Any hope the court would have to “restore capacity” and make Brown fit to stand trial could not move forward while Brown is still in federal custody, lawyers said.
Brown is charged with murder in state court and faces a federal charge of causing death on a mass transportation system. The state and federal cases are running in parallel.
Zarutska was fatally stabbed on Aug. 22 on the CATS light rail. The stabbing of the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee was caught on video. The case attracted national and international attention.
President Donald Trump even brought up the case in his State of the Union address earlier this year, pointing to Zarutska’s mother sitting in the audience.
Lauren Newton, attorney for the Zarutska family, says there are questions as to whether anything will be done to restore his capacity so the case can move forward.
In April, Spectrum News 1 spoke with Decarlos Brown’s sister, Tracey Brown, who said she was not surprised by the motion.
She said she had known about his struggles for years, and that she was sad and wished the loss of life didn’t have to happen for his condition to be taken seriously.
“I just hope both families get justice,” Brown said. “I hope that this situation opened up a lot of people’s eyes on mental health. I hope the state will start taking mental health seriously, so this won’t happen again.”

SPLC President CONDEMNS Graham Platner, saying Nazi tattoo is DISQUALIFYING
In an exchange with Texas Rep. Brandon Gill (@RepBrandonGill), SPLC president Bryan Fair admits that he wouldn't vote for any candidate with a Nazi tattoo.
BRANDON GILL [showing a photo of a shirtless Totenkopf tattoo visible]: This is the tattoo on Maine Democrat Senate candidate Graham Platner's chest; that is the Nazi SS death head tattoo. Do you have any opinions on that?
BRYAN FAIR: If it is what you say, if it is a Nazi symbol, we oppose Nazis.
GILL: I agree, we do oppose Nazis. Do you think that if somebody has a Nazi tattoo on their chest, it is indicative that they might be a Nazi?
FAIR: You would have to ask Mr. Platner why he has that symbol. If it is a symbol of Nazi-ism, we oppose Nazi-ism.
GILL: I don't know anybody who has a Nazi tattoo on their chest who is not a Nazi. Do you? Do you think somebody who has a Nazi tattoo on their chest should serve in the United States Senate?
FAIR: I wouldn‘t vote for that person.

Republican Steve Hilton to face Democrat Xavier Becerra in California governor’s race
NBC News projected Tuesday that Hilton, a former Fox News host, will advance from a crowded all-party primary field to the general election.
Former Fox News host Steve Hilton has advanced to the general election in the California gubernatorial race, NBC News projects, where he will face former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
Hilton, a Republican, emerged from a crowded primary where candidates from all parties appear on the same ballot and the top two vote getters move on. NBC News projected Friday that Becerra, a Democrat, would advance.
With 88% of the expected vote tallied one week after polls closed, Becerra was taking about 28% support compared to 25% for Hilton. Billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer was in third with roughly 23%, while Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco was the only other candidate in double digits, with 10%.
See live results here.
Vote-counting in California can take weeks because of the state’s heavy reliance on mail-in ballots, which take longer to process. And ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received up to a week afterward are allowed to be counted. The wait has fueled unfounded claims from President Donald Trump and some Republicans of a “rigged” election in California.
Hilton will now enter the November general election as a significant underdog in a state where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans nearly 2-to-1. California voters haven’t elected a Republican governor in 20 years, and Trump lost the state by 20 points in the 2024 election.
Hilton was born in the United Kingdom, where he previously worked as an aide to then-Prime Minister David Cameron before becoming a U.S. citizen in 2021. He was able to consolidate Republican support after Trump endorsed him in April.
Prior to Trump’s involvement, some Democrats feared they were at risk of getting shut out of the general election, with so many of their candidates on the ballot and no clear front-runner. Bianco, who stirred up controversy after seizing hundreds of thousands of ballots in March as part of a purported investigation into California’s 2025 election, had also been polling near the top of the field along with Hilton.
The field was further shaken up in April, when former Rep. Eric Swalwell, one of the top-polling Democrats, dropped out of the race after facing sexual assault and misconduct allegations, which he has denied.
In the wake of Swalwell’s abrupt exit, Becerra, a former California attorney general and congressman, quickly began to rise in the polls after he was mired in the low single digits for much of the campaign.
As Becerra became the leading choice for more moderate Democrats, Steyer ran as a progressive, pushing for single-payer health care and a billionaire tax. He also poured more than $215 million of his own money into his campaign, allowing him to dominate the airwaves.
Steyer, a former hedge fund manager, has now spent more than half a billion dollars on unsuccessful campaigns for elected office. In 2020, he did not win any delegates during his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination after spending more than $300 million of his own money.
Term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, remained neutral in the race to replace him.
Becerra and Hilton traded barbs during the primary debates that could preview the attacks to come in the general election.
At a May debate, Hilton described Becerra — and his party more broadly — as responsible for the state’s problems after holding power in California for decades.
“Some of these Democrats on the stage, they talk as if we’re in some parallel universe where Democrats haven’t been running the state for the last 16 years of one-party rule. I mean, you look at Xavier — 36 years he’s been a career politician for Democrats,” Hilton said.
Meanwhile, Becerra hit back at Hilton over his lack of government experience.
“What does a Fox News talking head know about running government?” he said. “You’ve never balanced a budget the size of California’s.”

Head of Russian missile forces killed by BMW car bomb
A car bomb killed a senior Russian defense official outside Moscow early Tuesday, June 9. Around 5:30 a.m., a BMW X3 exploded near Koldunova Street in Balashikha’s Aviatorov neighborhood as the driver pulled out of a parking space. Bystanders reached the driver while he was still alive, but he died at the scene.
The Russian federal Investigative Committee and the prosecutor’s office for the Moscow region confirmed an explosion had taken place in Balashikha but did not name the victim. The Investigative Committee said a criminal case had been opened but did not disclose the charge.
Several Telegram channels reported that the victim was Damir Davydov, head of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) of Russia’s Defense Ministry. The Russian Telegram channel VChK-OGPU, Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Serhiy Sternenko, and the Ukrainian outlet Insider UA all reported the same name. A source cited by the independent Russian outlet Astra also confirmed Davydov’s death, saying an improvised explosive device had been placed under the vehicle. The Russian business daily Kommersant reported that the device had the explosive force of up to 500 grams of TNT.
Davydov was listed in the Myrotvorets database. According to Ukrainian sources, Davydov was 57 and grew up in the closed city of Penza-19, also known as Zarechny. His father, Rafail Davydov, worked at the Start production association, which manufactured nuclear missiles. Shot, a Russian Telegram channel with ties to law enforcement, put his age at 62.
A December 2009 article in the Defense Ministry newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda identified Davydov as commander of the Central Test Technical Bureau attached to the 51st Arsenal of the Defense Ministry’s Main Missile and Artillery Directorate, with the rank of colonel. He appeared again in a 2019 article, which placed him in a Russian Defense Ministry delegation to Kazakhstan — by then serving as head of a GRAU directorate.
By the evening of June 9, neither Russian law enforcement nor state media had officially named the victim. The independent Russian investigative outlet Agentstvo noted that in earlier cases involving senior military figures, the victims had been publicly named the same day.
The Aviatorov neighborhood, where the explosion occurred, was originally built as a residential district for military retirees, Agentstvo reported. In April 2025, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, was killed when a bomb destroyed his car in the same neighborhood. The Investigative Committee opened a terrorism case, alleging that the attack was carried out on the orders of Ukraine’s Security Service, and arrested the alleged perpetrator, Ignat Kuzin. In November 2025, Kuzin was sentenced to life in prison.
