From D-Day to NASA: how science forged the Space Coast’s rise
Wed, June 10, 2026 at 2:05 AM PDT
The new movie Pressure, about the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion, has a powerful relevance to the Space Coast that moviegoers here in Brevard County may not realize.
The film focuses on the 72 hours before that climactic event, when Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower, played by Brendon Fraser, had to decide on what day to start the invasion.
The problem was precisely when to begin it. The American meteorologist, Irving Crick (played by Chris Messina), used historic models to develop his weather forecasts and recommended June 5.
His British counterpart, James Staag (Andrew Scott), disagreed, predicting fierce storms on that day, which would swamp Allied landing craft. Eisenhower had to reconcile the conflicting forecasts and perhaps postpone D-Day — which he did.
The meteorologists' role in planning this momentous military operation points to a larger issue that has profound impact today. World War II established a solid nexus between science and the military, and by extension, the government.
This link was further exemplified by the Manhattan Project, the government's top-secret operation employing thousands of scientists to build the ultimate weapon of destruction, the atom bomb.
Science helped to provide countless other innovations and improvements that the Allies exploited, giving them an edge in the conflict—proximity fuses, synthetic rubber, cryptology breakthroughs, and more.
After the war, the ligament joining science and government grew stronger. In particular, one event fortified this relationship. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite, inaugurating the Space Age.
The achievement caught many Americans off-guard and whipped the media and politicians into a frenzy, as they bemoaned the country's alleged inferiority to its Cold War rival in science and technology.
The instant laments were unfounded, and one person who knew U.S. strengths in these areas was the president at the time — Dwight Eisenhower.
1/2
Sputnik tested the president's leadership, and just as during D-Day, Eisenhower rose to the challenge.
To speed up U.S. satellite endeavors, he green-lighted the use of a special Army rocket, the Jupiter C, to launch America's first satellite, Explorer I, which lifted off from Cape Canaveral in January 1958, just four months after Sputnik.
Eisenhower used a new electronic medium—television—to give two live primetime addresses on "Science in National Security," during which he tried to allay fears that the U.S. trailed the Soviet Union in these arenas.
(Eisenhower later became the first president to win an Emmy, awarded for his use of television.)
Eisenhower signed the National Defense Education Act, which encouraged students to study science and engineering in college and graduate school.
He created a new Presidential Science Advisory Committee and appointed the first-ever presidential science advisor, James Killian, the president of MIT.
All chief executives since Eisenhower have had science advisors, keeping presidents — who rarely come from science backgrounds — current with developments in the modern, technological world.
Perhaps the greatest action Eisenhower took after Sputnik, came in July 1958. That month, he signed legislation creating NASA.
The new space agency gave direction to America's efforts in the cosmos and brought order to the chaotic welter of competing rocket projects that the Pentagon — where all of the nation's space activities had resided — tried to control.
In 1959, NASA announced Project Mercury, an ambitious program to send humans into space, and by the end of Eisenhower's presidency, the U.S. had launched 31 satellites, whereas the Soviet Union had just 9.
As a five-star general, President Eisenhower yearned to harness science to bolster America's defenses. He approved the first U.S. spy satellite, Corona, which monitored Soviet defenses and military installations.
He also presided over the development of new ICBM rockets, which maintained a precarious Cold War balance of power with the U.S.S.R. through the concept of mutually assured destruction.
These 1950s developments were all grounded in the blossoming of science that occurred after WWII, the effects of which we witness on the Space Coast today. Here, NASA looms large, as do defense contractors.
The Florida Institute of Technology, a STEM school founded in 1958, bears eloquent testimony to science's preponderant importance here. As president, Eisenhower encouraged science's place in the White House and the nation.
The D-Day meteorology reports, dramatically depicted in Pressure, strengthened his appreciation of science. In a real sense, science helped to win World War II.
But once in the White House, Eisenhower, who entitled one volume of his presidential memoirs Waging Peace, used science to achieve peace, helping to keep the Cold War "cold" and win it.
These legacies benefit Space Coast residents — and all Americans — more than eighty years after D-Day.

DAF senior leaders explain, justify sizable budget boost in Senate hearing
June 9, 2026
Presenting a unified front, the highest-ranking civilian and military leaders of the Air Force and Space Force told a Senate subcommittee June 9 that the historic boost in spending for the department is necessary to defend the nation and that mechanisms are already in place to spend the funds wisely and to maximum effect.
“For the past 25 years, the Department of the Air Force's budget has been the smallest relative to GDP in its history,” the department’s secretary, Troy Meink, told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.
“At the same time, the nation has asked more of it. To meet its mission needs, the DAF was forced to shortchange both foundational readiness and much-needed modernization.
The fiscal 2027 President’s Budget breaks that pattern with a $338.8 billion request for the DAF, a 34% increase from last year,” Meink said.
Meink was joined at the hearing by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach and Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman. The hearing was one of the first steps in the process of approving the department’s spending plan before the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
Broken apart, the proposal Congress is now considering stipulates $267.7 billion for the Air Force and $71.1 billion for the Space Force. Meink, Wilsbach and Saltzman said the funding is focused in broad strokes on sharpening readiness, continuing to modernize weapon systems, upgrading living conditions for personnel, and underwriting deterrence.
The budget request for the Air Force, Wilsbach said, “prioritizes restoring depth to our force by increasing funding for flying hours, munitions, maintenance, and advanced training that reflects the realities of today and tomorrow’s fight.”
He said the funding will also be used to continue developing the newest fighter, the F-47, and a collection of semiautonomous aircraft known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft, “while also investing in long-range strike, advanced munitions, and resilient command and control.”
Wilsbach also highlighted the continuing effort to modernize the nuclear deterrent through the B-21 Raider bomber program, upgrading the ageless B-52 Stratofortress, and the Sentinel land-based nuclear missile.
“Weapons system sustainment funding increased to over $22 billion and flying hours to nearly $10 billion. We are focused on readiness that continues to remain credible and can deliver effects,” Wilsbach told senators, while adding a caveat.
“Modernization is not only about replacing old platforms with new ones but evolving how we fight. Speed, survivability, and decision advantage will define future conflict. It requires a force that is more connected and adaptable.”
In his remarks to the Senate panel, Saltzman re-emphasized a common refrain: that space has become a central and indispensable part of commerce, everyday life and, most critically, the nation’s defense.
1/2
“Our adversaries are constantly working to take away our military and economic advantages in the space domain. To defend our nation’s interests in space, the Space Force must do more than grow, we must evolve to meet the challenges of this new era,” Saltzman said.
The speed of change and the importance of space are unchanging realities, Saltzman said in explaining why the 130% increase in the Space Force’s proposed budget is necessary.
“The Space Force we have today is not the Space Force we will need in the future,” he said.
“Increases in the service’s budget and end strength are a national security imperative. That is why the FY27 budget boosts our topline by 130% and our end strength by 27%,” he said.
The surge in spending “will allow the Space Force to recruit and train the Guardians we need … build vital space capabilities for the joint force and the nation … and provide the support and infrastructure that mission growth demands,” he said.
By Senate standards, the hearing moved along at a brisk pace, ending in 90 minutes. Among the topics raised by senators were multiple questions about drones and base protection and how Ukraine’s expertise can be used to better defend against those threats.
Meink told senators the department is already studying the lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. Other questions touched on tankers and the expected delivery rate for the new KC-46 tanker, as well as how CCAs will be delivered and used. Senators asked about the reliability and readiness of the F-35, a plane Wilsbach said is performing well in the Iran conflict.
Several senators expressed concern about Congress failing to produce and pass a spending plan and having to rely once again on a continuing resolution that reverts spending to current levels.
Meink said being forced to operate under a CR “would have significant impacts on readiness,” operations and necessary modernization.
All three leaders highlighted a critical, but often less glamorous, focus on acquisition reform to ensure every dollar is spent wisely and with speed.
In that regard, Meink, Wilsbach and Saltzman each mentioned giving more authority to portfolio acquisition executives to make decisions and act more independently so projects move with less bureaucratic weight and more speed.
“We are empowering our new portfolio acquisition executives, and their teams, with the authorities, resources, and talent they need to accelerate capability delivery,” Meink said.
“We have delegated nearly every authority we are legally allowed to do so down to the PAEs. We are re-aligning portfolios to match mission outcomes.
Our end state is all DAF acquisitions aligned within the PAE structure to ensure consistent, simplified, and rapid decision-making across the Space Force and Air Force.”
For the Space Force, Saltzman emphasized that the 6-year-old service continues “creating some of these innovative capabilities for new missions from the ground up.”
That effort includes “investing in all categories of counterspace systems necessary to deter and defeat aggression in space.
“Additionally, we are aggressively pursuing more resilient space architectures that can withstand attacks and continue to operate through extended conflict,” he said, describing the budget request as “a generational opportunity to position the force to meet the rapidly expanding threats and demands of the nation.”
Saltzman also signaled that the near term is a pivot point for the country’s newest military service. “The Space Force has laid the organizational foundation, defined the compounding threat, and delivered the blueprint required to counter it.
“Now,” he told senators, “we must build those structures and systems to ensure domain superiority for years to come.”

Boosting European leadership in in-space operations and services
10/06/2026
The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission signed a joint declaration on In-Space Operations and Services (ISOS), signalling a shared ambition to build European leadership in in-orbit servicing.
The agreement, signed on 10 June at the Berlin Air Show’s Space Pavilion by ESA Operations Director Rolf Densing and Director for Secure and Connected Space within the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space Catherine Kavvada, formalises the intent of ESA and the European Commission to cooperate closely on the development and maturation of key technologies and mission concepts.
The joint ISOS activities will ensure the future competitiveness and resilience of the European space sector, providing Europe with strategic autonomy.
In-space operations and services: a new approach to space
In-space operations and services will extend the entire space sector beyond the present frontiers.
Rather than relying on ‘disposable’ satellites, the future is also introducing orbital infrastructure elements that can achieve refilling, assembly, manufacturing, removal, repositioning, inspection, refurbishment and recycling in space.
This approach supports the transition towards a circular economy in space, allowing new operations and transportation paradigms. The improved sustainability and efficiency will go hand in hand with new commercial opportunities for Europe.
At the core of the new agreement lies a common objective: to ensure that Europe can operate independently in space, strengthening its technological leadership, competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
A central element of the cooperation between ESA and EC is the development of the EU’s In-Space Operations and Services for Infrastructure (ISOS4I) pilot mission.
The mission, aiming for launch by 2030, will be an important milestone towards establishing a European in-space service infrastructure. Together, the way will be paved for routine servicing, maintenance and upgrade of satellites in orbit.
ESA’s technological track record, from concept to commercial promise
ESA brings decades of expertise with mission design, technology development and operations to the collaboration.
Through its In-Space Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) activities, the agency has been driving the development of critical technical building blocks for in-orbit transportation and services, including robotics, close-proximity operations, servicing interfaces and modular spacecraft design.
By promoting interoperability and modularity from the outset, ESA aims to reduce the costs and resources needed, to improve safety and accelerate the emergence of a competitive European market for in-space services.
1/2
The In-Space Proof-of-Concepts (InSPoCs) incremental demonstrations being implemented by ESA Space Transportation will de-risk space transportation capabilities and foster shared interfaces in support of ISOS’s logistics and host pillars, moving, operating and refilling spacecraft.
In parallel, ESA Space Transportation accompanies development of orbital transfer and demonstration vehicles including Astris, RAVEN and Space Rider.
ESA Space Safety is playing a key role in this effort through its Active Debris Removal and In-Orbit Servicing (ADRIOS) cornerstone missions. These missions are opening new markets for European industry while fostering sustainability and developing an in-space circular economy.
ESA’s ClearSpace-1 will be the first to remove an unprepared piece of debris from orbit, demonstrating critical technologies such as relative navigation and close-proximity operations.
The Agency’s CAT mission will test capture and removal interfaces, simplifying future servicing and debris removal operations. And Rise will demonstrate commercial in-orbit servicing by rendezvousing with a geostationary satellite and extending its operational lifetime.
Together, these missions are already building essential European capabilities for in-space operations and services.
Collaboration essential for European leadership
The strong support from ESA Member States at the 2025 ESA Ministerial Conference underlines that the growing importance of In-space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) capabilities has not gone unnoticed.
Contributions to ESA’s related programmes reflect a clear commitment to accelerating Europe’s progress in this domain.
By joining forces, ESA and the European Commission are creating the conditions for a thriving European in-space service ecosystem.
The partnership combines ESA’s technical excellence with the European Union’s policy, regulatory and funding frameworks, enabling a coherent and strategic approach.
Today’s signature at ILA sends a strong signal: Europe is committed to advancing together to secure its autonomy in space.
Through joint efforts, the continent is positioning itself as a global leader in in-orbit servicing to ensure safer, more sustainable and more resilient space operations for the decades to come.

Three wounded by Ukrainian missile strike – regional governor
10 Jun, 2026 09:38 | Updated 10 Jun, 2026 11:26
Ukraine launched a missile and drone attack targeting the Russian city of Cheboksary early Wednesday morning, resulting in three injuries, local governor Oleg Nikolaev has said.
Two of the wounded were hospitalized with moderate injuries, while a third person with minor wounds was treated and sent home, the governor of Chuvashia Region wrote on Telegram.
Cheboksary is a city of almost 500,000 people on the Volga River, located some 900 km from Russia’s border with Ukraine.
Ukrainian media claimed that Kiev deployed locally made long-range Flamingo missiles in the attack, which reportedly targeted an electronics plant in the city.
Ukraine also attacked Russia's Samara Region overnight. Three people were wounded in a drone raid, according to local governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev.
Several industrial facilities suffered damage in the attack, which involved dozens of UAVs, the governor said.
In total, 326 Ukrainian drones were shot down across Russia overnight as the country came under another large-scale Ukrainian aerial raid, the Defense Ministry reported.
The interceptions took place over Moscow, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Novgorod, Ryazan, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Smolensk, Orel, Tver, Tula, Ulyanovsk and Krasnodar regions, as well as over Crimea and the Black Sea, the ministry said.
Last week, Russian forces launched a large-scale missile and drone barrage, targeting defense industrial sites in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as locations in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy regions, according to the country’s Defense Ministry.
Another major raid by Moscow on May 24 saw two state-of-the-art intermediate-range hypersonic Oreshnik systems being deployed.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that it would respond to Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets with “systematic and consistent strikes” against military-related infrastructure.
Russian officials have said potential targets include drone manufacturing sites, command centers, and other “decision-making centers.”
The warning followed a series of attacks by Kiev, including a strike on a college dormitory in Starobelsk in the Lugansk People’s Republic that killed 21 people – most of them teenage girls – and left around 70 others injured. Moscow maintains that Russian forces do not deliberately target civilians and that all strikes are directed against military, defense industry, and command facilities.

Israel should have seized Iran's uranium during Operation Roaring Lion, Gallant says
“We should have gone and brought the enriched uranium by force in a military operation during the campaign. That would have uprooted the nuclear program from Iran,” he said.
Israel should have chosen a different strategy against Iran's nuclear program during Operation Roaring Lion, former defense minister Yoav Gallant said in an interview with 103FM on Monday.
“We should have gone and brought the enriched uranium by force in a military operation during the campaign. That would have uprooted the nuclear program from Iran,” he said.
“The ability of the US Army together with the Israeli army existed, and that was something that should have been done. It is dangerous and could come at a price, but it is a risk that must be taken for the security of the State of Israel.”

US close to deal addressing Iran's nuclear program 'for the long term,' VP Vance says - report
"I feel that we are in a position to get a deal that is good for the US economically and that really does deal with the Iranian nuclear program, not just now… but for the long term," he said.
An agreement between the United States and Iran that addresses Iran's nuclear program "for the long term" is nearing fruition, US Vice President JD Vance told CBS News, adding that it could come in the coming weeks or months.
"Right now, I feel that we are in a position to get a deal that is good for the United States economically and that really does deal with the Iranian nuclear program, not just now, not just while Donald Trump is president, but for the long term, to where my kids can say when they're adults, 'Iran is not going to have a nuclear weapon,'" Vance said.
"That's the goal of the policy. And I think we're very close to achieving that goal. But we still got some wood to chop. We're going to keep doing it," he added.

Taiwan test-fires US-supplied missiles towards mainland China
10 Jun, 2026 12:08 | Updated 10 Jun, 2026 13:10
aiwan has launched approximately 36 US-supplied missiles into the water off the coast of mainland China, in a first-of-its-kind live-fire drill on the self-governing island’s west coast.
The exercise comes amid mounting tensions between Taipei and Beijing, which considers Taiwan sovereign Chinese territory.
The drills took place on Wednesday and involved the firing of reduced-range training rockets from US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) into the Taiwan Strait.
According to Taipei, the exercise was meant to simulate an attack on an invading Chinese force and demonstrate HIMARS’ ability to “shoot-and-scoot” by avoiding counter strikes.
HIMARS has a range of up to around 300 km, meaning it could potentially hit targets in China’s southeastern Fujian Province across the strait.
Taiwan has ordered 29 HIMARS launchers from the US and has also been building up anti-ship and air defense systems.
Chinese officials have repeatedly condemned US arms sales to Taipei as interference in China’s internal affairs and a violation of the decades-old One-China policy.
While Washington does not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent state, it has maintained close unofficial ties with Taipei and remains its main arms supplier.
During his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping described Taiwan as the most important issue in China-US relations and warned that mishandling it could push the two countries into “a very dangerous situation.”
Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and has consistently warned against separatism on the island. Xi has repeatedly said Beijing seeks peaceful reunification, but has refused to rule out the use of force if provoked.

3-mile drone flight restrictions in place for World Cup matches: $75K fine
Wed, June 10, 2026 at 9:25 AM Updated Wed, June 10, 2026 at 10:26 AM
SEATTLE — Drone operators planning to fly near Lumen Field/Seattle Stadium this summer are being warned to stay grounded on FIFA World Cup match days.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said a three nautical mile Temporary Flight Restriction will be in effect around Lumen Field/Seattle Stadium during the FIFA World Cup matches in June and July.
The FAA has designated World Cup venues and surrounding event spaces as strict “No Drone Zones."
The sheriff's office warned that unauthorized drone flights could result in civil penalties up to $75,000 per violation, criminal fines up to $100,000, equipment seizure, and possible federal charges.
The restriction will go into effect every game day, starting three hours before kick-off and lasting until three hours after the match ends.
During that window, unauthorized drone operations are strictly prohibited. Any Unmanned Aircraft System activity, including flights supporting newsgathering and public information, requires special FAA approval.
The sheriff’s office said local and federal law enforcement may detect, track, and mitigate any non-compliant or malicious drones during the restrictions.
It also warned that, depending on the mitigation method used, nearby drones could experience unintended disruption to links or navigation, including drones that are approved to operate.
The agency said mitigation could result in a loss of control, unscheduled landings, damage, or destruction of nearby drones.
Security flight restrictions for major sporting events are issued under federal statute 14 CFR 99.7, also known as Special Security Instructions, according to the sheriff’s office.
It said associated FAA orders are intended to protect people and property and maintain safe, efficient airspace during significant events.

Government aware of ‘several’ kinds of aliens: UFO whistleblower
Updated: Jun 9, 2026 / 04:33 PM CDT
A UFO whistleblower says there are multiple kinds of alien life and there are people in the U.S. government who know about it.
Whistleblower David Grusch said the U.S. government is aware of “several” kinds of extraterrestrial life, ranging in complexity.
Lawmakers and UAP whistleblowers gathered at the U.S. Capitol Tuesday to renew calls for greater government transparency, including immunity for whistleblowers.
The group also called for the release of files related to alleged encounters with nonhuman beings and information regarding extraterrestrial life.
Lawmakers called for the release of specific records, including those related to the 1996 Varginha incident, which took place in Varginha, Brazil.
Witnesses to the incident reported contact with non-human, sentient beings and said those beings were transported to the U.S.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., said lawmakers are requesting that the White House grant immunity to whistleblowers who come forward with information, including the locations of UFOs and advanced technology.
“For decades, the American people have been treated like children, told there are government secrets they just don’t get to know,” Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., said of the secrecy around the subject.
He described what he called a “Tom Clancy-style dead drop” of information to his office, saying nobody should be afraid to provide information to Congress.
Burlison echoed Luna’s call for immunity and called on President Donald Trump to waive all nondisclosure agreements for UFO whistleblowers to allow them to speak freely.
“Disclosure today, disclosure tomorrow,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla. “The American people deserve to know.”
Lawmakers also stressed that this is not just about potential evidence of extraterrestrials, but a question of where the Pentagon is spending money and whether it is avoiding Congressional oversight.

Former intelligence officer Grusch, who gave NewsNation his first on-the-record interview as a whistleblower in 2023, claiming the government had recovered vehicles of non-human origin, also called for more transparency.
“The topics that we’re discussing here today go beyond life in the universe,” Grusch said, citing national security issues posed by UAPs.
Along with lawmakers, Grusch accused those in government of gatekeeping information around UFOs. “Political appointees have not complied with the disclosure law,” he said.
Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., also decried roadblocks, saying if lawmakers toured Area 51, all they would get is a T-shirt because the government would move everything else.
Organizers say participants will urge Congress and the Trump administration to release additional records, strengthen whistleblower protections and advance legislation designed to increase transparency around “unidentified anomalous phenomena,” or UAPs, the government’s term for UFOs.
NewsNation’s Ross Coulthart, who has been one of those leading the push on UAP transparency, will examine the path to disclosure, from ancient sightings to Hollywood fascination, on June 13 at 8 p.m. ET/7C.
Government says it’s transparent on UAPs, advocates disagree
Supporters of greater disclosure argue Congress and the public still do not have access to all government records related to UAP investigations.
They say key information remains classified despite years of hearings, whistleblower testimony and promises of increased transparency.
Some lawmakers have also accused federal agencies of withholding information from Congress, allegations the agencies have denied.
The dispute has fueled a broader debate over government secrecy and whether officials have been fully forthcoming about what they know regarding unexplained sightings reported by military personnel.
How David Grusch became a central figure in UAP disclosure
Grusch became one of the most prominent figures in the UAP debate after coming forward in 2023 with allegations the government was withholding information about recovered craft and secret programs tied to unidentified aerial phenomena.
The former intelligence officer told NewsNation exclusively he learned of efforts to retrieve and study vehicles of non-human origin while working with the government’s UAP task force.
While Grusch’s allegations helped spark congressional hearings and renewed public interest in UAPs, a 2024 AARO review found no verifiable evidence the U.S. government possesses extraterrestrial technology or operates hidden programs to reverse engineer such technology.
