Space industry aficionados have big plans. They talk about the not so distant future when hundreds of thousands or even millions of satellites orbit planet Earth, beaming the internet to the unconnected, processing data in orbital computer centers, generating solar power and more. But this ambitious vision, which many in the sector think will become reality sooner or later, worries atmospheric researchers.
Studies show that since the beginning of the mega-constellation era in 2020, concentrations of potentially dangerous high-altitude air pollution stemming from satellite launches and re-entries has significantly increased. Based on estimates described by researchers as "conservative", the global space sector will have released by 2030 more climate-altering chemicals into the atmosphere than the entire United Kingdom. If the growth envisioned by the space industry leaders comes to pass, this air pollution, mostly concentrated in higher layers of the atmosphere, will at some point begin altering Earth's climate, Eloise Marais, a professor of atmospheric chemistry and air quality at University College London, told Space.com.
"The space industry pollution is like a small-scale, unregulated geoengineering experiment that could have many unintended and serious environmental consequences," she said.
Geoengineering is a term describing a number of possible interventions that could reverse the rise in global temperatures caused by the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One of the most commonly discussed geoengineering methods is the Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, which entails releasing large amounts of light-reflecting particles into the stratosphere, the second layer of Earth's atmosphere, to reduce the amount of heat reaching the planet. The idea is being studied by scientists, who warn that impacts may be unpredictable, including changes in rain patterns, draughts and unforeseen weather changes.
Marais is one of those scientists, leading a team that is studying the effects of satellite-related air pollution. Their latest study found that by 2029, air pollution from megaconstellation satellite launches — such as Starlink, Amazon Leo or Chinese projects Guowang and Quianfan — will account for more than 40 percent of all pollution generated by the space sector.
Megaconstellations — most commonly used to beam internet to users in remote areas from near Earth space — are a quickly growing trend. They rely on satellites with limited life-spans which get replaced about every five years with more modern and powerful technology. The frequent replacements mean a more frequent launching and a more frequent deorbiting compared to old-school missions designed with longer missions in mind. That in turn, means more air pollution inserted into the otherwise pristine upper layers of Earth's atmosphere.
"Most mega-constellation launches today are burning kerosine fuel, because they usually rely on Falcon 9 rockets, which are producing black carbon," Marais said. "This black carbon is being released into the higher layers of the atmosphere where it stays for 2.5 to 3 years. Because of that, that black carbon has about 540 times bigger climate effect than black carbon that's released from surface sources like ships, cars and power plants."

The researchers estimate the impact of air pollution from rocket launches by calculating the amounts of pollution likely to arise from expected satellite launches and re-entries in a given period. While satellite launches mostly produce black carbon, which has a potential to warm the upper atmosphere, satellite re-entries generate aluminum oxides, which can damage the ozone layer. The team then runs climate models that show the expected impact of the pollutants on the planet.
"The model can very nicely tell us how much ozone is going to be destroyed from this pollution and how much the climate is going to be altered from this pollution," said Marais.
Marais added the latest modelling was based on "conservative" numbers as the actual growth in satellite numbers has been consistently outstripping the researchers expectations.

Role of CFCs
While it was initially unclear whether the formation of the Antarctic ozone hole stemmed from natural causes or from anthropogenic effects on the environment, extensive field studies combined with the results of laboratory experiments and computer modeling of the atmosphere quickly led to a consistent and detailed explanation for ozone-hole formation. The formation of the ozone hole has two principal causes: chemical reactions that occur generally throughout the stratosphere and special conditions that exist in the Antarctic region.
Under normal conditions, the concentration of ozone in the stratosphere is determined by an equilibrium balance between reactions that remove ozone and those that produce ozone. The removal reactions are mainly catalytic chain reactions, in which trace atmospheric chemical species destroy ozone molecules without themselves being consumed. In such processes, it is possible for one chain component to remove many ozone molecules before being itself removed. A single chlorine atom, for example, is estimated to remove as many as 100,000 ozone molecules through chemical chain reactions before it is, itself, removed by forming a nonreactive species. The trace species involved in ozone removal include hydrogen oxides and nitrogen oxides, formed primarily by naturally occurring processes, and chlorine and bromine atoms and their corresponding oxides.
A major source of chlorine in the stratosphere is the decomposition of a class of compounds called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Such compounds are used as refrigerants in refrigeration and air conditioning applications, and were commonly used as aerosol propellants and solvents, freely released into the atmosphere. Their use and handling are now strictly regulated. Chlorofluorocarbons are extremely stable in the lower atmosphere, with lifetimes of several decades, due to their extreme lack of chemical reactivity. The main fate of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere, however, is slow migration into the stratosphere, where they absorb ultraviolet light and fragment to release chlorine atoms. The chlorine atoms produced from the breakdown of chlorofluorocarbons in the stratosphere provide an additional catalytic process by which stratospheric ozone is destroyed. A similar set of reactions involving a class of bromine-containing compounds called halons, used in some types of fire extinguishers, leads to additional ozone destruction by similar photochemical processes. By 1986, the average global loss of stratospheric ozone caused by the release of chlorofluorocarbons, halons, and related compounds into the environment was estimated to be 2 percent.

Public Health Concerns
Stratospheric ozone provides global protection from the lethal effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation protects all life forms on Earth’s surface from excessive ultraviolet radiation, which destroys plant and animal cells. Between 10 and 30 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation reaches the ground surface. If ozone levels were to drop by 10 percent, the amount of UV-B radiation reaching Earth would increase by 20 percent.
UV-B levels are responsible for the fading of paints and the yellowing of window glazing and for car finishes becoming chalky. These kinds of degradation will accelerate as the ozone layer is depleted. There could also be increased smog, urban air pollution, and a worsening of the problem of acid rain in cities. In humans, UV-B causes sunburn, snow blindness, skin cancer, and cataracts, and promotes aging and wrinkling of the skin. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer.

Human Trafficking in Illicit Massage Businesses
There are an estimated 7,500 to 9,000 illicit massage businesses (IMBs) currently in operation in the United States. IMBs are a venue that use the cover of a legitimate bodywork or massage business to provide commercial sex acts to a customer base of sex buyers. Many of the IMBs nationwide are at risk for engaging of human trafficking. These commercial-front brothels can include businesses claiming to provide massage, spas, reflexology, foot massage, bodywork, and modeling. Many of these venues are not actually individual businesses, but are instead part of larger networks that follow similar operating structures across numerous locations.
Networks of these venues enable traffickers to exploit vulnerable women for commercial sex and labor. The larger the network, the greater the likelihood that an illicit massage business in that network is engaged in human trafficking. These networks facilitate the recruitment of women, primarily foreign nationals, and their movement between locations to have a continuous rotation of “new” women available for buyers. Trafficking cases have been confirmed by law enforcement and service providers from New York to California, and from provinces in China and parts of South Korea and Thailand. Methods of control and coercion in IMBs include false promises, deceptive recruitment, lies, manipulation, debt bondage, threats, and intimidation. Focusing on disrupting criminal networks rather than a single business front or arresting the women themselves means disrupting the exploitation of women in these venues.
