UFC fighter Josh Hokit is facing intense backlash for making a distasteful comment about former first lady Michelle Obama after winning his bout on the South Lawn of the White House during the “UFC Freedom 250” event Sunday.
During an interview with podcaster and UFC announcer Joe Rogan, Hokit concluded his postfight remarks by grinning and looking directly into the television camera, saying, “And lastly … Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?”
The quip was an apparent reference to a conspiracy theory that has taken hold on the political right in recent years about the former first lady, which has been promoted by some conservative pundits and sparked a steady stream of crude social media memes and jokes online.
A number of figures in sports, politics and pop culture pushed back on Hokit, who also gave a gold chain to President Trump after winning his fight Sunday night.
“Josh Hokit won the biggest fight of his career at the White House and decides to finish his interview by calling Michelle Obama a Man. What a disgrace,” wrote former NFL quarterback and sports broadcaster Robert Griffin III in one social media post. “It takes a really small man to use his biggest moment to attack a woman by calling her a man. Especially with the history behind calling black women men.”
