The Uyghurs are a predominantly Muslim, Turkic-speaking ethnic group of about 11 to 12 million people, whose ancestral homeland is the northwestern region of China, officially known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (also historically referred to as East Turkestan).
