Putin calls for national currency settlements at Asian leaders’ summit

The Russian president discussed de-dollarization at the Russia-ASEAN summit in Kazan, which was attended by the leaders of the group’s eleven member states

Russia and the nations of Southeast Asia should conduct more trade in their national currencies, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking after the second day of the Russia-ASEAN summit in Kazan on Thursday, which was attended by the leaders of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, and Vietnam, Putin said his country would continue supplying the ASEAN members with food and energy products and expand exports of higher value-added goods, including fertilizer and pharmaceuticals.

“The participants expressed their support for the qualitative and quantitative increase in the counter-trade indicators, to improve its structure and expand mutual investment. To do this, it is important to switch from financial transactions [in dollars] to national currencies,” Putin said.

Moscow has accelerated efforts to move away from the Western-dominated financial system by trading with international partners in their national currencies, a trend increasingly embraced by ASEAN members. By the end of 2025, 85% of Russia’s international transactions were conducted in currencies other than the dollar and euro, according to Maksim Oreshkin, deputy head of the presidential administration.

Putin also called for the removal of trade barriers and the expansion of maritime and rail transport links, saying summit participants backed stronger trade and a more multipolar world order.

The Russian leader made the remarks alongside Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose country will chair ASEAN in 2026.

He said Russia and ASEAN had agreed upon a joint statement and a concept paper on energy cooperation that would serve as a roadmap for practical cooperation between the two sides in the sector.

Putin also noted that ASEAN countries shared Russia’s position on a number of global issues, including the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to end hostilities.

“We unanimously welcomed the agreements reached by the Iranian and American sides to end the military conflict and work on the parameters of a future peace agreement,” he said, adding that he expected the situation in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf to stabilize, with a positive impact on global markets.

The summit also approved a new action plan for 2026-2030 which sets out ways to increase cooperation in areas such as politics, security, trade, investment, energy, transport, agriculture, the digital economy, and science and technology.

The June 17-19 summit in Kazan marks 35 years of relations between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Israel severs contact with EU’s Kallas over reported apartheid remarks

The Israeli foreign minister has lamented the “blatant unfairness” exhibited by the top EU diplomat

West Jerusalem will cut “all contact” with EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas over her reported comparison of the country to apartheid-era South Africa, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has announced.

Relations between the bloc and Israel’s far-right government have steadily deteriorated in the past few years over the war in Gaza, accelerating illegal settlement building, and the invasion of Lebanon. The EU has for years been accused of double standards over its failure to prosecute Israel for possible genocide, while imposing 21 rounds of sanctions against Russia. The gaffe-prone Kallas recently tried to compensate for Brussels’ weak position with statements more critical of Israel.

On Thursday, Sa’ar referenced recent media reports that Kallas had compared modern Israel to apartheid-era South Africa during a private meeting. The minister accused the EU top diplomat of “acting obsessively and with blatant unfairness” and vowed to sever contact with her.

“As the Foreign Minister of the State of Israel, I have no choice but to sever all contact with Ms. Kallas until she retracts the blood libel she directed at the world’s only Jewish state, which is also the only democracy in the Middle East,” Sa’ar wrote on X.

Kallas attempted to defuse the situation, vaguely stating that the “EU is always committed to a constructive relationship with Israel” as well as “dialogue and engagement.” At the same time, she reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to a two-state solution and condemned illegal Israeli settlements.

The response landed poorly with Sa’ar, who reiterated the demand for Kallas to explicitly comment on the reported apartheid comparison.

“With all due respect, even in your remarks here you refrain from denying or condemning what has been attributed to you and published publicly,” responded Sa’ar. “If you did indeed make these vile and defamatory statements, stand behind them. If you did not make them, deny it.”

EU-Israeli ties were also damaged recently over the Global Sumud Flotilla incident. The fleet, organized by international activists and humanitarian groups, attempted to run the Israeli blockade of Gaza late in May. The flotilla was intercepted, with its participants allegedly subjected to widespread physical and sexual abuse and mocked personally by far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The incident prompted multiple EU nations to impose a travel ban on Ben-Gvir, while Italy and France launched independent probes.

Pauline Hanson doubles down on ‘monocultural’ Australia claim after National Press Club backlash

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has rejected criticism of her call for a “monocultural” Australia, arguing national laws, language, and institutions already reflect a single culture.

“We’re seeing the division that’s happening in other countries around the world, so I think being monoculture is the way for us to move forward.”

She then declared: “Japan has no problem with it”.

Kenny pressed further, saying “monoculture” was seen as too extreme a term.

“It suggests we don’t allow for variations in background in this country, which are obvious around the country when you look at Indians, Italians, Sikhs, Chinese, Middle Eastern people," he said.

"They’re all expressing some elements of their culture while embracing Australian values."

However, Senator Hanson said people from some of those disparate cultural backgrounds had told her they were “Australians” and “proud to be here”.

“It’s not just about the culture of persons, it’s about the culture of the nation, who we are: our traditions, our own culture, our language, our dress, our laws – these are all monocultural,” she said.

“We don’t have multicultural laws, do we? We have a monoculture law where everyone is treated the same under the one law, so if people have chosen to come to Australia.

"They know what they’re doing, they say they want to come on board to be Australian, I think that’s very important.”

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor was amongst those who criticised Senator Hanson’s use of the term on Thursday.

“I judge people on their character and their conduct. That’s how the Liberal and Nationals approach things,” he told a press conference.

“If she wants to judge people based on the colour of their skin or their race, One Nation needs to explain that, but our position on this is clear.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told a separate press conference parties who wished to form government should focus on policies, “not simply seeking to divide Australians against each other”.

Islamophobia envoy Aftab Malik, meanwhile, told ABC Radio National the “reality is that Australia is multireligious, multiethnic, multifaith”.

Flotilla victim blaming. Time to expel Israel’s ambassador

Even Penny Wong believes the Gaza flotilla victims and the AFP is investigating, yet Israel’s ambassador and the Murdoch press call everyone liars.

Israel’s ambassador to Australia has looked at Australian citizens who say they were beaten, tortured and raped, and called them frauds.

Sit with that. A foreign envoy, on Australian soil, telling Australian women that their rape and torture is a performance.

Ambassador Hillel Newman and his embassy say there is no credible evidence, brand the eleven Australians professional provocateurs, and say the allegations are already proven false. To the survivors’ families, the embassy said its forces treated detainees with great sensitivity.

On ABC radio, Newman called the AFP investigation a mistake and warned that if he decided it was a witch hunt, he was not sure how Israel would respond.

How dare he? How dare a foreign ambassador stand in this country and tell Australian women that what was done to them never happened? How dare he reduce Juliet Lamont to a propagandist before one piece of evidence has been tested? A woman who says she was beaten, cable-tied and raped, who has the medical record of a fractured coccyx.

That is not diplomacy. It is

the demonisation of rape victims by the representative of the state they are accusing.

Understand who else he is calling a liar. Penny Wong, the Foreign Minister of Australia, sat with these survivors and told the country she believes them, calling their treatment horrific and unacceptable. Anne Aly, a minister of the Crown, was also there. So was a senior DFAT official, and a Deputy Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police.

By Lamont’s account, every woman in that room believed her, thanked her, and told her she was brave.

So when Newman says the survivors are lying,

he is saying the Foreign Minister of Australia is lying.

He is saying a minister of the Crown is a fool and the federal police are running a witch hunt against the truth. A foreign ambassador has called the senior leadership of the Australian government dupes for daring to believe Australian women.

No contest of the facts

Newman has not contested one allegation with one fact. No ship log. No operational order. No footage. No medical record. He confirms no request for further footage has even been answered, and says Israel alone will decide whether the AFP is worthy of seeing it. The accused wants to vet his own investigators while branding the victims liars.

That is not a government with nothing to hide.

It is one that has decided contempt is cheaper than cooperation.

Now watch who sprinted to stand beside him. The Australian Jewish Association, the word Australian sitting right there in its name and never meaning less.

Confronted with Australians who say they were raped in Israeli custody, the AJA did not call for Israel to be investigated, did not demand it hand over the evidence, and did not stand behind a single Australian woman.

Instead, its chief executive, Robert Gregory, wrote to the AFP Commissioner, Krissy Barrett, demanding the flotilla participants, the Australian citizens, be investigated.

Twenty-Six Charged in Indictment Alleging Federal Racketeering, Conspiracy, and Other Crimes

Investigation alleges over a decade-long pattern of violence, drug trafficking, robbery, firearms offenses, fraud schemes, and other criminal conduct

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – First Assistant United States Attorney Charles C. Calenda and Thomas A. Greco, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Boston Field Division, in partnership with Colonel Oscar L. Perez, Chief of Police, Providence Police Department, announced federal charges against twenty-six individuals. The indictment alleged that several Providence-area street gangs, including the East Side gang, the Congress gang, and their various subsets and associates constituted a criminal enterprise. Three additional defendants are charged with related offenses. The charges are the result of a multi-agency investigation conducted by federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.

According to court documents, the Enterprise operated in Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, and elsewhere since at least 2013. The indictment alleges that members and associates of the enterprise worked together to advance the interests of the organization through acts of violence, narcotics trafficking, firearms offenses, fraud schemes, and other criminal activity.

Court documents further allege that members and associates of the enterprise distributed controlled substances, including fentanyl, cocaine, cocaine base, marijuana, and Percocet, and that narcotics trafficking served as a significant source of income for the enterprise.

The indictment further alleges that members and associates of the enterprise participated in violent acts, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, firearms offenses, narcotics trafficking, wire fraud, and other criminal conduct. The indictment also alleges that certain members and associates participated in fraud schemes involving unemployment insurance benefits, COVID-19 relief programs, tax filings, and other financial crimes.

The indictment charges twenty-three defendants with participation in the racketeering conspiracy and three additional defendants with related offenses.

The matter was investigated by ATF, the Providence Police Department, the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General, IRS Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, and numerous additional federal, state, and local law enforcement partners including the Providence Police Department Intelligence Unit.

The charges contained in the indictment are allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

A total of 161 individuals have been charged in immigration and border-security related matters from June 12-17, announced Acting U.S. Attorney John G.E. Marck.

Of those, 33 people face illegal entry charges, while another 104 allegedly reentered the United States after prior removal.
