NASA and the American Meteor Society confirmed the object was a piece of an asteroid about 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter and weighing roughly 1 pound. It became visible over Tupelo, Mississippi, at an altitude of 60 miles, traveled 300 miles northwest, and completely disintegrated over the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri at an altitude of34 miles.
