Tardy Iran No-Show Abruptly Nixes Peace Deal Signing in Switzerland

The U.S. drive to launch high-stakes peace talks with Iran hit a snag Friday after Tehran reportedly delayed sending its delegation to Switzerland for the negotiations citing Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Lebanon for its absence.

The talks, set for the mountaintop resort of Burgenstock, would not take place, Switzerland’s foreign ministry confirmed, but gave no details.

Tehran did later set out the reasons citing military activity in southern Lebanon as Israel continues to exercise its right to self defense in the face of unceasing Hezbollah terrorist attacks.

As Breitbart News reported, the White House had earlier confirmed Vice President JD Vance delayed his trip to Switzerland in response to Iran’s tardiness to follow through on its commitments.

He and his team were literally standing on the tarmac ready to board their flight when news came of the Iran no-show.

So too dozens of U.S. diplomatic and security officials, advance staffers and media were already in Switzerland to prepare for Vance’s anticipated arrival.

Now the reason for the delay has now been made clear.

AP reports the announcement followed a report from Al-Mayadeen, a Pan-Arab satellite channel that is politically allied with the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, that Iran was delaying sending its delegation to Switzerland over Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Lebanon.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency further added Iranian negotiators needed ⁠to see signs of implementation of the interim agreement from the U.S. before the next rounds of peace talks could begin, and there was no confirmation that its delegation would travel to Geneva, the Guardian set out.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) that President Donald Trump personally signed “lays out a broad plan to end the conflict and hash out a comprehensive deal within 60 days,” with the U.S. and Iran agreeing to immediately halt military operations while promising to withhold future attacks.

A new date has yet to be set for the promised negotiations to begin Switzerland.

Labour veteran Andy Burnham won Thursday’s Makerfield by-election by a greater than expected margin in results announced in the early hours of Friday morning, beating Reform’s Rob Kenyon into second place.

Burnham won 24,927 votes, taking 55 per cent, while Kenyon got 15,696 votes, at 35 per cent.The turnout was unusually high for a UK by-election at 59 per cent of eligible voters.

Nigel Farage reflected that Burnham had been buoyed by hatred for Prime Minister and despite his candidate losing out,reflected that Reform UK remains “the big national party on the centre right. A disappointing morning, but we keep going”.

The path to become Prime Minister is now open to Burnham.While it is clear Labour insiders have anointed him as Starmer’s replacement and anticipate a coronation, the Prime Minister has shown no indication that he’ll go easy.

Already having clung on to power after May’s disastrous national local elections results,the Starmer cabal are clear in their position that changing leader mid-term is a sign of weakness the public won’t respect. The election “opened up the space for the real change” and had demonstrated “the need to change Labour”, he said, while reeling off a laundry list of national policies.

Changing Whitehall procurement rules to force buying British to aid reindustrialisation was his main pitch,while also signalling a major change to the education system to de-prioritise the push for the path to university for most young people started in the Blair era, and a focus on technical education to feed that re-industrialisation.

So while Burnham may have that spirit of the moment within the party itself — and backing of Labour insiders so apparently strongit may render the coming leadership election a mere formality— that is no promise of a national revival for Labour, no matter how well Burnham performed in a special election in his own back yard.

Firstly, he has already promised to govern under the terms of Labour’s 2024 election manifesto(party platform), meaning his space for manoeuvre is severely constrained and any polling bump from having a fresh face at the top is likely to be short lived. Perhaps one of Burnham’s greatest strengths is that he spent the whole Starmer era out of Westminster, yet short of calling a snap general election — that he can’t guarantee a clean win from — he steps straight into Starmer’s soiled shoes.

And then there are plenty within the Labour Party very much opposed to Burnham and his ‘soft left’ position. The Party has already split once in the past decade, with incumbent Starmer purging the party of its very hardest left upon taking power, and could split again as the left develops new obsessions ill-served by a relic of the Tony Blair era. It is even claimed that some present Labour Parliamentarians are in talks to defect to the Green Party.

Former President Barack Hussein Obama and his wife Michelle welcomed a long list of Hollywood celebrities, former president, and world leaders for the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago,even as the Center has been engulfed in controversy for allegedly stiffing many black-owned building contractors for their construction fees.

The grand opening for Obama’s controversial and imposing Center in Chicago was a star-studded affair on Thursday, featuring performances from Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, The Roots, U2’s Bono and The Edge, and many more, Breitbart News reported.

The Obama Foundation also previously announced the entertainment lineup on Tuesday, with the grand opening set for Juneteenth in John Lewis Plaza following years of construction cost overruns and delays. Others on the lineup include, Christina Aguilera, Eddie Vedder, John Legend, Marc Anthony, Tems, Common, and Marsai Martin.

“This Grand Opening ceremony will be unlike any other — filled with music, performances, and hope,” said Valerie Jarrett, CEO of The Obama Foundation. “The Grand Opening Ceremony will reflect a spirit of inspiration and joy, with a big boost from the performers who are sharing their talent with us.We hope to inspire people everywhere to believe in their power to bring change home.”

Barack, a Chicago implant, lauded the city’s South Side, and in a press release said, “Our story begins on the South Side of Chicago. For me, it was here where hope took root. It’s where I started knocking on doors, where I learned to listen and found my voice, where I fell in love with Michelle and built a family and a community and a home,”Barack Obama shared in a voiceover. “Today, we open the doors to the Obama Presidential Center, a place rooted in this community and built on a simple belief that we can come together and create the change we seek,” The Wrap wrote.

Also in attendance during the June 16 pre-opening event were former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Joe Biden. Former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and ex-Vice President Kamala Harris were also on hand.

But even as Obama waxed poetic about Chicago’s South Side and celebrated “democracy,”his Obama Presidential Center has already become mired in controversy even before opening after a growing number of contractors — many of whom are black-owned businesses— are saying that the Center has not paid them for their construction work.

Construction companies are now reporting that the Center owes them amounts ranging from the tens of thousands to multiple millions in unpaid construction fees. And in the case of many ofthe black-owned businesses, they face bankruptcy if they don’t get paid soon, Fox News reported.

Adamson Plumbing owner Mike Owen, for instance,says he is owed $4 million by the Obama Center and it is a hole in his budgethe might not be able to survive.

African American Contractors Association President Omar Shareef blasted the Obama Center andnoted that many of the black-owned businesses Obama has stiffed are “scared to death about talking about it” because they fear a backlash for criticizing Obama.

“I’ve never seen this happen since I’ve been in business,” Shareef added. “The building does look nice, but the fact doesn’t matter that they’re not paying our damn contractors.”

“The promise was that this project was going to uplift minority contractors and uplift the community,” Shareef continued. “What sense is celebrating Juneteenth if our Black contractors are not getting their money?”

Shareef also said thatmany of these black-owned businesses are wishing they had never become involved with the Obama Center.

The situation is compounded by the fact that theObama Foundation never funded the $470 million backup fund they agreed to bankroll in case costs ran over the Center’s budget. So far, theFoundation has put a mere $1 million in the fund, an amount that doesn’t come anywhere near covering the cost overruns and unpaid construction fees.

The $470 backup fund was supposed to be the guarantee that Chicago and Illinois taxpayers would not be on the hook to pay for the overruns.But now that is looking like taxpayers might be stuck with the bills despite the agreementthe Obama Foundation signed with state and local officials.

Tom Hanks Mocks MS NOW’s Small Audience Live to Network Reporter’s Face

Toy Story 5 star Tom Hanks took a sledge hammer to MS NOW’s tiny number of viewers right in the face of one of the network’s reporters in Chicago on Thursday.

Hanks was in the Windy City for the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center when a reporter for the former MSNBC — which rebranded itself as MS NOW last summer — approached the film star with mic in hand.

As the Cast Away star turned his attention to the reporter, he offhandedly remarked, “What can I do for the 800 people watching MS Now?”

The reporter was a tad hurt by the comment, so Hanks added, “Alright, add a zero to it if you need to.”

Of course, adding a zero — to make eight thousand viewers — is still nothing like gangbuster viewership for a cable network.Just for example, the nine a.m. show on Fox News, America’s Newsroom with Bill Hemmer, usually earns up to 2.1 million viewers during the time slot. So, if Hanks imagines that all MS Now can dredge up is eight thousand viewers, that says it all.

Even as Hanks was taking a humorous jab at MS NOW, the Obama Center, which he came to see, has become mired in its own sea of controversyafter news broke that the millions of dollars in cost overruns have left dozens of black-owned small businesses, construction companies, and tradesmen unpaid for their work on the Center.

One Tree Hill and Chicago P.D. star Sophia Bush isattacking President Donald Trump with petty screeds, only days after she urged liberals to commit violence against their political opponents.

Bush commented on an X post by California Democrat Congressman Mike Levin who wascelebrating the fact that a liberal federal judge in Washington D.C. had ruled that Trump’s name be removed from the Kennedy Center. The judge’s orders were finally fulfilled last week.

But while he celebrated the win, Rep. Levin alsodecried the fact that the center has not yet removed the tarp covering the Kennedy Center name now that Trump’s name has been removed.

This spurred the actress jump to her X account to lash out at the president.

“Ahahahaha imagine being the literal President of the United States and being this much of petty little bitch boy. It’s so pathetic I can’t EVEN,” she wrote.

This latest attack on Trump comes only a week after Bush appeared on the left-wing ABC talk show,The View, and insisted that she would deliver a “punch on the mouth” to those who disagree with her political ideas.

She launched her tirade byclaiming that former first Lady Michelle Obama was “classy” when she said, “When they go low, we go high.”Of course, Obama is the same first lady who said she was never proud of being an American.

Bush then suggested that leftists have to wade into public fights instead of hiding in leftist enclaves, and said, “I think if you don’t go into some of these spaces, you leave a vacuum for the worst misinformation, for the worse racism, for worst sexism to grow.And while I do believe my forever first lady, Michelle Obama should stay high — she should stay high, I don’t want that woman in the muck —but I was raised by a mother who was raised in the Bronx. Boston College History Professor: Trump’s White House UFC Fight Like 19th Century Lynching

A Boston College history professor has compared the UFC fight recently held at the White House to a 19th-century lynching.

During an interview withformer CNN reporter Jim Acosta on his YouTube show, professor Heather Richardson said that the“impulse” to stage the UFC match at the White House stemmed from the same impulse that enslaved black Americans and discriminated against other Americans.

“I mean, it’s not really a stretch to say that the same impulse that created the UFC fight on the White House lawn isthe impulse that really pushed lynching in the late 19th century against black Americans overwhelmingly, but also against Italian Americans in Louisiana, for example, or Mexican Americans in the American West, or indigenous Americans,” she said.

She added that the impulse led to racist ideas like how “America is a white nation and anybody who challenges that needs to be purged from the body politic.”

While some critics of the UFC match were intense, none went nearly as far as Richardson.

To stay quiet means to turn a blind eye. And so I am saying this.What happened last night on the lawn of the White House was disgraceful and void of decency,” Grammy Award-winning musician Sheryl Crow wrote in an Instagram Story. “Powerful, rich people filled the lawn to watch a violent sport that ended with a vile and racist comment.”

“All while the average American cannot afford healthcare, gas, and cost of living. Do not be fooled. This administration is corrupt and does not give a damn about the American people,” she continued. “It only cares about making money hand over fist at the expense and in spite of our democracy. Heated Canada-Qatar World Cup Contest Ends in Bust-Up

Canada strolled past Qatar to win 6-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group B match on Thursday night,but the contest didn’t end at the final whistle in Vancouver. Far from it.

Both teams went on to indulge in some pushing, shoving, shirt tugging, name calling and insults as they left the field.

The ugly scenes came on the back of Canadian player Ismael Kone suffering a sickening injury during the contest and having to be stretchered off.

The talented midfielder was forced off following a dangerous challenge by Qatar‘s Assim Madibo.

That incident delivered Qatar’s second red card of the match,with Homam Ahmed having received his marching orders in the first half for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Kone’s injury prompted an emotional response from his team-mates and opponents which contributed to the fracas at game’s end.

The Sun reports Canada boss Jesse Marsch looked frustrated as he saw the scuffles andheated argy-bargy.

The former Leeds manager was involved in a tense exchange of his own with Qatar’s Julen Lopetegui, who had watched his side get pumped on the world stage.

No Joke: Comedian Carlos Mencia Faces 12 Felony Charges for Failing to Report $8M+ in Earnings

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Comedian Carlos Mencia was arrested Thursday and charged with 12 felony charges for failing to report or pay taxes on more than $8 million in earnings, prosecutors said.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochmanannounced the charges at a news conference where he called Mencia “one of California’s biggest tax scofflaws.”

The 58-year-old stand-up comic was charged withsix felony counts of failure to file personal income tax with the intent to evade taxes — one each for the years 2019 to 2024— and six similar counts for corporate taxes.

Mencia owes more than $300,000 in state taxes on income totaling $8.7 million, Hochman said.

He has not entered a plea, and emails sent to his attorney seeking comment was not immediately answered.

Mencia was arrested at his Los Angeles home at about 7 a.m., authorities said. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon and was being held on $250,000 bail. He is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday. If he’s convicted of all counts he could get more than 11 years in prison, along with paying the tax bills and interest that will almost double the total.

The charges are the first filed under the new district attorney’s new Business Tax Fraud Unit that was established in May by Hochman, a former longtime prosecutor of tax cases.

Mencia regularly paid taxesbefore 2019, Hochman said. He was sent 78 notices from the state about his delinquent bills, with no response. The charges deal only with state taxes. Hochman said the IRS has not informed his office of Mencia’s federal tax status.

Born Ned Arnel Holness in Honduras and raised in East Los Angeles, Mencia began doing stand-up in LA clubs in the late 1980s. By the early 2000s, he became one of the most popular comics in the U.S. and also did some acting in film and television. He had his own TV series, “Mind of Mencia,” combining stand-up with sketches on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2008.

Hochman pointed out at the news conference that on the show in 2007, Mencia said, “Maybe I’m different, but I think taxes are a good thing.”

His comedy most often dealt with race, class and Latino culture. His career took a downward turn as he was hit with accusations from many fellow comedians of joke theft, which he always denied, from other comics. Joe Rogan, then best known as a stand-up comic, confronted him on a club stage on the issue in a video that went viral in 2007. Mencia had long discussions on Marc Maron’s podcast on the alleged plagiarism, acknowledging that he may have absorbed others’ material but denying outright theft.

He still does regular stand-up shows, touring clubs and small theaters.He’s scheduled to do a series of dates in Southern California this week and Las Vegas next week.

Number of Refugees in Germany Hits Record High of Four Million

An estimated four million alleged refugees are now living in Germany,including millions that have remained in the country for decades, Berlin’s official statistician has revealed.

Data released by Destatis ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20 shows that arecord 4 million people are living in Germanyafter immigrating as refugees since the Second World War.

The statistician found that 3.3 million people immigrated to Germany since 1950 as refugees, while around 713,000 foreign survivors of World War II remain alive and within the country.

According to the data, 832,000 of the 3.3 million post-1950 refugees are Ukrainian nationals, or 25 per cent. Meanwhile, over one in five (22 per cent) hailed from Syria, meaning that thetwo countries accountfor nearly half of all displaced people living in Germany since 1950.

Other significant groups included 316,000 people from Afghanistan, 186,000 from Iraq, 146,000 from Turkey, 120,000 from Poland, and 117,000 from Iran.

The reportfound that 1.2 million refugees arrived between 2014 and 2021in the wake of the Syrian civil war, and afurther 1.1 million arrived between 2022 and 2025 following the outbreak of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

However, in anapparent contradiction of the notion that refugees should be temporary and return home after conflicts conclude, Destatis found that some 476,000 people currently living in Germany arrived between 1990 and 2000, in part as a result of the wars in the now dissolved Yugoslavia.

The official statistician also found that theaverage ageof a refugee living in Germany in 2025was 39..The majority of refugees were male at 55 per cent, compared to 45 per cent who were women.

Germany’s large refugee populationcomes largely as a result of the open borders ethosof former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who unilaterally opened the gates of Europe in 2014, sparking the first European Migrant Crisis.

The country has seen a radical transformation in its demographics as a result, with one in five people residing inthe country being migrants, or around 16.4 million. The true scale of the transformation comes into clearer view when counting those with an “immigration history”, meaning they either immigrated themselves or had two parents who immigrated to the country,

which together account for 22 million people, or 26.3 per cent of the total population.

While themass importation of foreigners was pitched as an economic panacea. for the country, ithas mostly ballooned welfare spending, with nearly half ofall ‘citizen’s allowance’ welfarebeneficiaries being foreigners. A similar picture is found in terms of crime, withforeigners being significantly overrepresented among criminal suspects, at 42.9 per cent.

Theissues surrounding immigration have been a boost to the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which now consistently polls as the most popular party in the country.

A survey from INSA found that 78 per cent of voters do not believe that the neoliberal coalition government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been successful in addressing immigration.

Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to a ceasefire starting on Friday, Reuters has claimed, citingan unnamed US official and “two Hezbollah officials.” However,no official confirmation has been made by eitherthe Israel Defense Forces or the militant group as of yet.

According to the US official who spoke to Reuters, negotiators for the US and Qatar worked out the deal with help from Iran. “We understand that after the exchange of fire earlier today, Israel and Hezbollah are now in a ceasefire,” he added.

The American-Iranian memo of understanding signed earlier this week states that the war should be terminated on all fronts, including in Lebanon.However, Israel has continued its strikes on its neighbor, killing at least 18 people only Friday night, the country’s health ministry said earlier.

Earlier today, Lebanese Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah told Reuters that Iran had informed the group that talks with Washington could not continue without the implementation of a comprehensive ceasefire.

He also called on the Lebanese government to reject any direct negotiations with Israel while Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue.

Hezbollah not only functions as a militant group, it is also as a political party and social welfare provider;however, it is at odds with the Lebanese government. In March, Lebanon’s government took the unprecedented step of banning Hezbollah’s military and security activity.

The group is represented in both the government and parliament. The move came hours after it announced it had launched rockets and drones towards Israel to avenge the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli attacks.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat sources, the Shiite political alliance is now divided over how to deal with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s government, which took the decision. While one faction, described as hardline, favors changing the government, another believes current political conditions make such a move unrealistic because of parliamentary arithmetic: priority should instead be given to securing an Israeli withdrawal and rebuilding devastated towns.
