AFNWC welcomes new executive director

The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center welcomed a new executive director recently to its headquarters at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.
Dr. Kelly Hammett, a member of the Senior Executive Service, was appointed to the position this month. Hammett replaced Joseph Oder, who is moving to a new position as assistant deputy chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration at Headquarters Air Force.
As executive director, Hammett will advise the AFNWC commander in managing all aspects of the center’s mission to acquire, sustain and modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
The center is responsible for the lifecycle management of nuclear weapons systems supporting two legs of the nation’s nuclear triad, including intercontinental ballistic missiles; air-launched cruise missiles; gravity bombs; and nuclear command, control and communication systems.
It has more than 2,300 military and civilian personnel authorized at 20 locations worldwide.
Hammett was previously dual hatted as the director and program executive officer for the Space Rapid Capabilities Office, where he oversaw space-based research, development and acquisition activities for classified space acquisition programs.
In addition, he served 20 years on active duty with the Air Force, primarily working with the development and acquisition of directed energy weapon systems.
His civilian career began here at Kirtland AFB, where he has held multiple acquisition positions over the last 16 years, including as director of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Directed Energy Directorate.
During his career, Hammett has led more than 30 successful field demonstrations of optical and directed energy technologies for space surveillance, missile defense, force protection, air superiority and global precision attack mission needs.
He also published more than 14 technical papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings.
AFNWC was established March 31, 2006, as the nuclear-focused center within Air Force Materiel Command.
It synchronizes all aspects of nuclear materiel management on behalf of the AFMC commander and in direct support of Air Force Global Strike Command.

Earth from Space celebrates 1000 images

ESA’s Earth from Space series reaches its 1000th image with a return to the vibrant waters of southern Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas – the same region featured in the very first edition in 2004.

This image, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission, shows at the top the southern tip of Florida, the circular Lake Okeechobee down through the Everglades and the curved archipelago of islands known as the Florida Keys all the way to Key West.
The surrounding turquoise and deep-blue waters create a striking reminder of the beauty and diversity of our planet, making this a fitting scene to celebrate a thousand views of Earth from space.
At the bottom of the image lies Cuba, partially veiled by clouds. The darker cloud-free area along the island’s southern coast is the Zapata Swamp, Cuba’s largest wetland, spanning the Zapata Peninsula and surrounding the Bay of Pigs.
The peninsula stretches into the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Batabanò, which separates the Cuban mainland from the circular Isla de la Juventud.
Between Florida and Cuba is the Cay Sal bank, appearing as a small area of turquoise water in the dark blue Straits of Florida.
To the east, we can see the Bahamas, which consist of a chain of islands and shallow-water banks.
The largest island, Andros, lies on the eastern edge of the Great Bahama Bank, a shallow-submerged water platform.
The contrast between the bank’s shallow green and turquoise waters and the darker Atlantic waters clearly marks the abrupt transition to deeper waters.
Earth from Space showcases some of the planet’s most beautiful and remote places through remarkable satellite imagery.
Beyond their visual appeal, these images show how Earth observation provides valuable and reliable information to answer important Earth-science questions, improve agricultural practices and maritime safety, mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, help when disaster strikes, and all manner of everyday applications in order to protect natural resources and the global environment.

The first image in the series was captured in 2004 by ESA’s Envisat with its Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) – the image covered an area of 670 km x 670 km at a spatial resolution of 300 m.
This image from March 2026 was acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-3’s Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), which builds on the legacy of MERIS, and is designed to keep the same ocean and land monitoring goals, but with enhanced performance.
While MERIS had 15 spectral bands, OLCI features 21 distinct bands. It has a spatial resolution of 300 m for all measurements and a wider swath width of 1270 km.
Also, the Sentinel-3 mission is based on a constellation of two satellites, which optimises coverage and provide global revisit every two days.
OLCI’s eyes on Earth allow ocean ecosystems to be monitored, support crop management and agriculture and provide estimates of atmospheric aerosol and clouds – all of which bring significant societal benefits through more informed decision-making.
The third Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite, Sentinel-3C, is set for launch this autumn to ensure continuity of these kind of data.

Russian expert breaks down media buzz over Ukrainian attack

Nearly 200 drones were shot down on Thursday before reaching Moscow in one of the largest attacks in the past two years
The latest media hype over one of Kiev’s largest aerial attacks on Moscow stems in part from the absence of strict legal liability in Russia for publishing online videos of such raids and their aftermath, according to Dmitry Kornev, a military expert and founder of the MilitaryRussia project.
Unlike in Ukraine, which enforces nationwide criminal penalties for publishing information that could aid the enemy, Russia’s restrictions on sharing videos of drone strikes carry only administrative penalties and apply only in certain regions.
In an interview with RT, Kornev noted that videos showing the impact of Ukrainian drone attacks in Russia are “often uploaded online almost in real time, allowing anyone with access to public resources to monitor the strikes and potentially use the footage to analyze and adjust future drone operations.”
By comparison, he said, footage released in Ukraine is “heavily censored and rarely allows viewers to geolocate the sites of military activity.”
On Thursday, air defenses shot down at least 194 UAVs on approach to Moscow after the Ukrainian military launched one of its largest-ever drone raids against the Russian capital.
At least 17 people, including two children, were wounded in Moscow Region as a result of the attack, local authorities reported.
Some drones made it through air defenses and caused fires, with witnesses reporting large plumes of thick black smoke in several areas in and outside the city.
Several UAVs reached the Moscow oil refinery in Kapotnya district in the southeast of the city, where fires broke out and firefighters were deployed to the site.
Debris from a downed drone also caused damage to a building at the Sadovod shopping center in southeastern Moscow, while the roof of the nearby Belaya Dacha mall caught fire.
Ukrainian drone raids on Russian territory have intensified over the past year, with Kiev launching hundreds of UAVs targeting residential areas, critical infrastructure, and industrial facilities.
Russian officials have described incursions of the kind as terrorist attacks meant to compensate for the setbacks Ukraine’s military has been suffering on the battlefield.
Earlier this week, Ukraine attacked a bus carrying a Belarusian youth soccer team in Russia’s Bryansk Region, injuring eight people, including six minors, and killing the wife of the team’s coach, who was accompanying the young athletes to a seaside resort.

Ukrainian forces reported striking railway bridges in occupied Crimea, a fuel depot in Mariupol, multiple drone command posts, a military equipment concentration near Sievierodonetsk, and infrastructure at the Moscow Oil Refinery
Ukrainian forces carried out a series of coordinated strikes against russian military and logistical targets on June 18 and during the night of June 19, targeting infrastructure used to sustain Moscow's war effort in temporarily occupied territories and inside russia, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
Among the most significant targets were two railway bridges near Rozdolne and Vladyslavivka in Crimea. The bridges were being used to support military transportation and supply operations for russian forces deployed on the peninsula and in the south of Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces also targeted an area where russian weapons and military equipment were concentrated near Siverskodonetsk in Luhansk region.
In addition, a fuel depot in temporarily occupied Mariupol was struck, potentially affecting the supply of fuel to russian units operating in the east and south of Ukraine.
The operation extended beyond logistics targets. Ukrainian forces reportedly struck multiple russian drone command posts located near Pokrovsk, Voskresenka, and Siversk in Donetsk region, as well as Novoivanivka in Zaporizhzhia region and Maliivka in Dnipropetrovsk region.
Such command centers play a key role in coordinating reconnaissance and strike drone operations along the front.
The General Staff also confirmed the results of an earlier strike carried out on June 18 against the Moscow Oil Refinery. According to the report, a crude oil processing unit, three RVS-10000 storage tanks, and one larger RVS-30000 tank were damaged during the attack.
The refinery has suspended oil processing operations for an indefinite period following the strike. If confirmed, the disruption could affect fuel production and distribution in one of russia's most important industrial regions.

US President Trump told NBC News in a phone interview that he spoke with Israel on Friday and asked them to agree to a ceasefire with the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.

Iraq raises southern oil output to 1.75 million bpd, officials say
Iraq has increased crude oil production from its southern fields by 250,000 barrels per day to around 1.75 million barrels per day as more tankers load crude from the country's ports, Iraqi oil officials told Reuters on Friday.
The officials said Iraq plans to raise production further to two million barrels per day in the coming few days.
Iraq, like other Gulf oil producers, has suffered the biggest drop in oil revenue as a result of the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Iran War.

Israel has attacked southern Lebanon more than 16 times since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was supposed to go into effect, according to Lebanese reports.
The ceasefire was meant to go into effect at 4:00 p.m.
The IDF has not commented on the reports.

Iran says it plans meeting with US officials in coming days after postponing Friday talks
A planned meeting between Iranian and US officials in Switzerland on Friday has been postponed, with arrangements underway for talks in the coming days, Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
The ministry said the meeting was no longer urgent because a memorandum of understanding on ending the war had already been signed digitally between the two sides.
The ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, added that negotiations on a final agreement would depend on the start and continued implementation of the specified terms outlined in the memorandum.

Sirens sounded in the northern Israel town Zar’it warning of a hostile aircraft intrusion on Friday afternoon.
This comes after the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was supposed to enter into effect.

IDF ready to operate across Lebanon, spox. says
The IDF will continue to operate within Lebanon while respecting decisions made by the political echelon, IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin told reporters on Friday afternoon.
Over the past 24 hours, the IDF hit over 100 Hezbollah targets, including in the Beqaa Valley and Nabatiya, killing “dozens” of terrorists, Defrin said.
When asked about reports of a ceasefire, Defrin said that the decision would be made by the nation’s politicians, and emphasized that until new orders are given, troops will continue operations.

US Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized Israeli hardliners opposed to US President Donald Trump’s Iran deal, warning that the country cannot “kill” its way out of every security problem.
Vance’s comments came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to withdraw troops from the country’s northern neighbor, despite a newly signed US-Iran memorandum of understanding that calls for an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.
“What is your exact proposal?” Vance told the New York Times on Thursday, responding to Israeli hardliners critical of the agreement. “You’re a country of nine million people. You can’t just kill your way out of solving every single national security problem that you have.”
Vance urged Israel to give diplomacy a chance and show “a little bit of credit” to Washington, and warned Israeli officials against publicly attacking Trump over the deal, saying the US president remains one of their country’s few reliable supporters.
Netanyahu, however, has insisted that Israeli troops will remain in southern Lebanon for as long as Israel deems necessary. “We will restore security to the north,” he said on Thursday, arguing that this required maintaining a “security strip” in southern Lebanon.
Shortly before Netanyahu’s remarks, the IDF published a new map showing an occupied area extending roughly 10km into Lebanese territory. Defense Minister Israel Katz previously said Israeli forces would remain in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza for as long as necessary.
The stance puts Netanyahu at odds with the US-Iran memorandum, which reportedly calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts and includes explicit language on respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Iranian officials have warned that continued Israeli attacks or occupation in Lebanon would be viewed as a violation of Washington’s commitments under the memorandum.
If the Israeli regime’s attacks on Lebanon continue, it will be considered a violation of the other party’s commitments under the memorandum of understanding,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said, insisting that Tehran does not separate the US from Israel when it comes to implementing the agreement.
Trump himself has recently criticized Israel’s approach to Lebanon, including in heated phone calls with Netanyahu, while maintaining support for Israel more broadly.
“You don’t have to knock down an apartment house every time you’re looking for somebody, because there are a lot of people in those apartment houses, and they’re not all Hezbollah,” Trump said earlier this week.

Resolving the Nature of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) by Scientific Evidence

Following the public announcement of the UAP Science Advisory Council in an article by DefenseScoop here and my essay here, I met today with the exceptional council members with the following expertise: Prof. Carol Cleland: anomaly identification; Dr. Richard Cloete: data analysis and AI tools; Dr. Omer Eldadi: data management, AI, and social psychology; Dr. Tim Gallaudet: oceanography; Dr. Kevin Knuth: physics and instrumentation; Prof. Robin Hanson: statistics and economics, Ross Howard: communication; Ben Lamm: oceanography and biology; Dr. Devesh Nandal: numerical analysis and astrophysics; Prof. Garry Nolan: molecular biology and materials science; Dr. Michael Shermer: the study of anomalies; Dr. Peter Skafish: anthropology and human-UAP encounters; Prof. Matthew Szydagis: instrumentation and data collection; and Dr. Jennice Vilhauer: quantitative psychology.
In support of President Trump’s directive on UAP transparency, I was tasked by the White House, the Pentagon’s All Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Intelligence Community and the FBI, to establish and lead this team of advisors. The council will only review unclassified information that can be communicated openly to the public. This is a great benefit for open scientific deliberations.
My approach was to select a few young nerds with exceptional technical skills who are fluent with the latest AI systems, include members with expertise in physics, oceanography, psychology (since UAPs interact with humans), and statistics (since UAP are rare), add a member with skeptical views (to mitigate biases and tribal thinking), as well as a communication officer who will coordinate our interactions with the public and the media.
The unifying thread among all members is that I know them personally and can attest that they are all brilliant. This council is focused on science. We will keep our eyes on the orbs, not on the audience in social media.
The council will deliberate honestly and adopt the scientific method in seeking conclusive evidence that will allow to resolve the nature of UAP.
This is a detective story that can be resolved with higher-quality data. We will provide advice to a higher-level UAP Governing board on how to obtain that data and help them fulfil their mission.
The council will also provide independent scientific analysis of publicly available data.
The optimal size of the council was selected not to be too small, nor too large. A small group is sensitive to the opinions of its members. Large variations in opinions could trigger unbalanced decisions.
Also, a small group does not have sufficient expertise to address all facets of UAP. On the other hand, a group that is too large would regress to the mean with little innovation.
The central limit theorem implies that the fractional variation from the mean scales inversely with the square root of the number of team members.
In our first meeting, all council members admitted that it is their honor and privilege to serve the U.S. government and resolve the mystery of UAP in collaboration with it. Stay tuned to future updates.

A UFO May Have Crashed in Texas Back in 1897

(Aurora, Texas) - The question of whether we're alone in the universe has never been answered.
It's weird that with all the high def tech in our phones, we can never get a clear picture or video of possible extraterrestrial life in the skies. Same for those videos and pictures of Bigfoot.
But I digress.
We know about the possible alien crash in Roswell, New Mexico in the 1940s. Supposedly, Area 51 is the base that was built to study the crashed ship and alien, or aliens.
There is another UFO crash that doesn't get the same exposure as the Roswell crash that happened in 1897 Texas.
UFO May Have Crashed in Texas
In 1897, the Dallas Morning News reported that a UFO had crashed on Judge J.S. Proctor's property in Aurora, Texas, located roughly 10 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
In the story, it is said that a cigar shaped ship crashed into his windmill, broke into many pieces and killed the pilot. The remains were described as badly disfigured.
The pilot was given a proper burial in the town's cemetery and townsfolk gathered pieces of the wreckage.
A Mr. T.J. Weems, who was a United States signal service officer and an authority on astronomy, said that the pilot was a native of Mars.
Papers were found that supposedly showed the pilot's travels but were written in hieroglyphics that couldn't be deciphered.
Possible UFO Crash in Aurora, Texas
S.E. Haydon was a reporter for the Dallas Morning News at the time and came to Aurora to report about the crash.
In his article, he wrote that witnesses said the ship was traveling north and very close to the ground. It was moving slow, possibly damaged and crashed into Proctor's windmill.
Debris was scattered across several acres. Visitors who have heard the story come to the town to see the burial site and look for any remaining wreckage.
At one time, Aurora's Historical Preservation Society hosted a festival to commemorate the event and raise money for the town. The festival is not held anymore with no reason given as to why.
Whether you believe in aliens or not, this is an interesting story to explore and one of many UFO sightings that have been reported in Texas over the decades.

After weeks of online mystery surrounding the release of a new Special Edition Jimny, sparked by blurry images and video released, plus continued denial from Suzuki Australia, Suzuki has "finally provided full disclosure" with this new footage.
Suzuki Automotive national marketing manager, Daniel Sammut, said, "This campaign couldn't be more timely. At the exact moment this new Pentagon footage has everyone asking 'is life out there?', the specced up, rugged Rhino is ready with the answer: 'Yes. If you're in a Jimny'."

Colin Farrell plays role of an alien in Apple TV series ‘Sugar’
Colin Farrell has revealed he is a firm believer in extraterrestrial life, and thinks aliens may already be walking among us.
The Irish actor, who plays an alien in his Apple TV+ series Sugar, was asked about his personal beliefs on the subject at the Season 2 premiere at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
He didn't hesitate.
"Do I believe in sentient beings from distant lands, or distant ethers, celestial things that we may not be able to comprehend with our limited minds, exist? Yeah, of course," he told Variety.
"I have a feeling they probably know of our existence and they probably visited us and may move amongst us, man, may move amongst us in all sorts of… I wouldn't like to think nefarious ways, but maybe I'm idealistic and if I am, that's OK."
Farrell also used the occasion to champion something rather closer to home, the experience of filming Sugar on location in Los Angeles itself, which he described as genuinely rare and special.
"It was magic to shoot here and look it's very uncommon for a show or a picture to shoot in L.A. because it's not cheap and the tax breaks suck," he said.
"It's amazing to be able to do it here. Everyone was able to stay home with their families and just go to work and kill it. There are great crews here. You won't find better technical and craftspeople."
Executive producer Simon Kinberg echoed the sentiment.
"I've shot almost nothing in my entire career in L.A. and I'm always desperate to be here," he said.
"Every artist I know who lives in Los Angeles, myself included, wants to be filming here. We write stuff that takes place here and every now and then on a show like this, we get to shoot here, but it's so rare."
The comments come at a time when Los Angeles continues to struggle to attract productions, with many shows and films choosing to film elsewhere due to costs and limited tax incentives, making Sugar's commitment to the city all the more notable.

The CIA Program That Refuses to Stay Buried
On May 13, 2026, a CIA whistleblower named James Erdman III sat before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and made a claim that sent shockwaves through Washington.
According to Erdman, the CIA had physically seized roughly 40 boxes of classified documents from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The documents related to two subjects: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and a Cold War-era mind control program called MKUltra.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard had been reviewing those files for possible declassification. According to Erdman’s testimony, the CIA removed them from the National Reconnaissance Office, where they had been staged for her review.
He also alleged the agency “illegally monitored the computer and phone usage” of Gabbard’s investigators. Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who chairs the House Task Force on Declassification of Federal Secrets, threatened to subpoena the CIA if the files were not returned within 24 hours.
The CIA dismissed the hearing as “dishonest political theater.”
But the fact that Congress is still fighting over MKUltra documents in 2026, more than 70 years after the program began, tells you everything you need to know about what this program was and why it still matters.
It also tells you why the Duffer Brothers eventually used it as the foundation for the most successful Netflix franchise in history.
What MKUltra Actually Was
Project MKUltra was a covert CIA research program that ran from approximately 1953 to 1973. Specifically, its stated purpose was to develop techniques for interrogation and behavioral control.
In practice, however, it was something far more disturbing. It was a sprawling operation that tested drugs, hypnosis, and psychological torture on unwitting human subjects. Those subjects, of course, included American citizens.
The program was conceived in the early days of the Korean War, when CIA officials became alarmed by reports that American prisoners of war were being “brainwashed” by Chinese and North Korean captors.
The fear, whether legitimate or exaggerated, was that Communist nations had developed mind control capabilities that the United States lacked. In fact, MKUltra was the response.
Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, a chemist who headed the CIA’s Technical Services Division, ultimately ran the program. Under his direction, MKUltra grew to encompass 149 separate subprojects.
These spanned at least 80 institutions, including universities, hospitals, and prisons. In fact, many of these institutions had no idea their research was being funded by the CIA.
The agency used front organizations and philanthropic “cut-outs” like the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology to disguise the source of funding.
The Experiments
Indeed, the methods tested under MKUltra were extreme by any standard. Declassified documents confirm that the program involved administering LSD to unwitting subjects, including CIA employees, military personnel, prisoners, and ordinary citizens.
In Operation Midnight Climax, the CIA set up safehouses in San Francisco and New York. Federal narcotics agent George White hired sex workers to lure men into these locations.
The men were then dosed with LSD without their knowledge while agents observed through one-way mirrors.
Beyond LSD, the program explored sensory deprivation, electroshock therapy, hypnosis, and induced sleep lasting weeks at a time. It also tested a technique called “psychic driving,” in which recorded messages were played on a loop to subjects in drug-induced states.
At McGill University in Montreal, psychiatrist Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron used these methods to effectively erase patients’ memories. His subjects were often people simply seeking treatment for depression or anxiety.
They were drugged into comas and subjected to weeks of electroshock. Some never fully recovered.

In addition to these documented experiments, the newly released 1,200-page collection from the National Security Archive includes evidence that the CIA also tested MKUltra techniques on prisoners of war in U.S. custody.
A 1950 memorandum addressed to CIA Director Roscoe Hillenkoetter laid out plans for “interrogation teams” trained to use “various drugs and hypnosis for personality control purposes.”
Frank Olson: The Death That Changed Everything
The most notorious incident connected to MKUltra involves Frank Olson, a U.S. Army biochemist who worked at Fort Detrick, Maryland. On November 19, 1953, Gottlieb secretly dosed Olson and several other Army scientists with LSD during a retreat.
Olson, who had no idea he had been drugged, experienced a severe psychological crisis in the days that followed.
Nine days later, Olson fell from the window of Room 1018A at the Statler Hotel in New York City. He was pronounced dead on arrival. The CIA initially ruled his death a suicide. But Olson’s family never accepted that explanation.
In 1975, after the Church Committee’s investigation revealed the LSD dosing, the family received a personal apology from President Gerald Ford and a financial settlement from Congress.
In 1994, Olson’s body was exhumed. A forensic pathologist found a previously undetected cranial injury consistent with a blow to the head before the fall.
The New York District Attorney opened a homicide investigation, though no charges were ever filed. Eric Olson, Frank’s son, spent decades arguing that his father was murdered.
He believed Frank had developed moral objections to the program and was considered a security risk. The case remains officially unresolved.
How MKUltra Was Exposed
In 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of all MKUltra files. Sidney Gottlieb personally supervised the shredding. The intention was to erase any trace of the program. It almost worked.
But in 1977, a Freedom of Information Act request uncovered a cache of approximately 20,000 documents that had been misfiled in the CIA’s financial records and therefore escaped the purge.
These budget documents, while dry and technical, provided enough detail to reconstruct the program’s scope and methods. They revealed the institutional participants, the drug protocols, the funding mechanisms, and the scale of human experimentation.
At the same time, the Church Committee was investigating intelligence abuses in Congress. The subsequent hearings led by Senator Ted Kennedy brought former CIA officials to testify.
Their testimony, combined with the surviving documents, established the factual record the public now knows. Yet the destruction of the primary files means the full scope of MKUltra may never be understood.
What survived was essentially the accounting. The operational details are largely gone.
Stranger Things: The Fiction Built on Fact
The Duffer Brothers didn’t invent the government laboratory experimenting on children. They adapted it from the documented record of a real CIA program.
In Stranger Things, MKUltra is referenced by name. Chief Hopper discovers that Eleven’s mother, Terry Ives, was an unwitting test subject in a CIA program while she was pregnant at Indiana University.
The experiments gave Eleven her psychic abilities. Dr. Martin Brenner, the chief antagonist of Season 1, is a fictionalized version of the real scientists who ran MKUltra’s subprojects.
Hawkins National Laboratory, where Eleven is raised in captivity, mirrors the institutional settings where MKUltra experiments actually took place.
The overlaps are specific and deliberate. MKUltra’s sensory deprivation tanks became Eleven’s flotation chamber. The program’s documented use of children in experiments became the show’s most disturbing narrative thread.
The CIA’s destruction of evidence became the cover-up that drives the plot. Matt Duffer told Vulture the show emerged from conversations about “mysterious government experiments at the tail end of the Cold War.”
Even Eleven’s number suggests a direct connection. The surviving MKUltra documents reference 149 numbered subprojects.
The show’s protagonist is identified only by a number tattooed on her wrist. She is, in effect, a subproject who escaped.

The Stargate Project: MKUltra’s Sequel
After MKUltra was officially terminated in the early 1970s, the CIA’s interest in psychic phenomena didn’t end. It simply moved to a new program.
The Stargate Project, which ran from 1978 to 1995, investigated “remote viewing” as a potential intelligence-gathering tool. Remote viewers were tasked with describing distant locations, military installations, and even hostage situations using only their minds.
Some sessions allegedly produced accurate intelligence. A remote viewer reportedly described a new Soviet submarine before satellite imagery confirmed it.
The program employed psychics who worked at Fort Meade, Maryland. When declassified in 1995, the CIA concluded that remote viewing had not produced reliable enough intelligence to continue.
Stranger Things is set in 1983, squarely in the Stargate era. Eleven’s abilities mirror the capabilities the CIA was actively trying to develop.
The Duffer Brothers layered documented history, active research, and conspiracy mythology into one narrative. The result felt plausible because significant parts of it were real.
The 2026 Fight: Why It Still Matters
The May 2026 congressional confrontation over the seized MKUltra files demonstrates that the program’s legacy is far from settled.
Over 1,200 pages of newly declassified records were released between December 2024 and April 2025 through the National Security Archive’s collection titled “CIA and the Behavioral Sciences.”
These documents confirmed methods including induced sleep, electroshock treatments, and “psychic driving.”
Then, according to whistleblower Erdman’s testimony, the CIA physically retrieved boxes of additional MKUltra documents from the facility where DNI Gabbard’s team was processing them for public release. Representative Luna convened a hearing.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer issued a preservation order demanding the CIA safeguard all related materials. The CIA’s spokesperson called the hearing “nothing more than dishonest political theater.”
Whether the seized documents contain information that would fundamentally change our understanding of MKUltra remains unknown.
But the agency’s apparent resistance to full disclosure, seven decades after the program began, keeps the conspiracy community alive.
Every refusal to release documents reinforces the suspicion that what was destroyed in 1973 was worse than what survived. And every time MKUltra makes headlines, millions of Stranger Things fans are reminded that their favorite show is built on something real.
The Montauk Connection
MKUltra is the bridge between documented history and the Montauk Project conspiracy.
Preston Nichols’ 1992 book claimed that Camp Hero, the decommissioned Air Force station at the tip of the South Fork, hosted experiments on children with psychic abilities in underground laboratories.
The “Montauk Boys” were allegedly subjected to electromagnetic frequency manipulation. The program supposedly produced a psychic named Duncan Cameron who could open portals to other dimensions.
None of this has been verified. Yet MKUltra provides the factual scaffolding that makes the Montauk mythology feel possible.
If the CIA really did test drugs on unwitting citizens (it did), and if the program really did use children as subjects (documents suggest it did), and if the government really did destroy evidence to cover its tracks (it did), then the leap from documented abuse to alleged conspiracy requires less imagination than it otherwise would.
Camp Hero sits 60 miles east of Brookhaven National Laboratory, a Department of Energy facility with its own conspiracy mythology.
It also sits 10 miles south of Plum Island, where the government has operated a classified animal disease laboratory since 1954. And it occupies the geographic endpoint of a peninsula where the military maintained surveillance throughout the Cold War.
The Montauk Project conspiracy didn’t emerge from thin air. It emerged from a landscape saturated with real government secrecy. MKUltra proved that the most extreme allegations were, in at least one case, completely true.
Where the Conversation Continues
MKUltra is not ancient history. Congress was fighting over its documents two weeks ago.
