Armenian opposition demands election results be annulled

The opposition Strong Armenia bloc has petitioned the constitutional court to annul the results of the June 7 parliamentary election, alleging that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government orchestrated widespread electoral violations. The bloc placed second in the vote.

Pashinyan’s pro-EU ruling party, Civil Contract, claimed a decisive victory, securing 49.74% of the vote, according to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC).

Strong Armenia, founded by Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, won 23.27%, while the Armenia Alliance, led by former President Robert Kocharyan, garnered 9.92%.

Businessman Gagik Tsarukyan’s Prosperous Armenia narrowly missed the 4% threshold required for parliamentary representation, receiving 3.98%. Its failure to enter parliament proved pivotal for Civil Contract, helping the ruling party retain a constitutional majority that allows it to pass legislation and appoint senior officials without opposition backing.

The opposition has accused Civil Contract of widespread electoral misconduct following the vote. Strong Armenia, in particular, alleged that the ruling party secured around 100,000 votes through the misuse of administrative resources, including pressure on public-sector employees and military personnel to support Civil Contract.

In a statement published on Facebook on Friday, the bloc said it had filed a complaint with the constitutional court seeking to invalidate the election results and order a new vote, citing what it described as “mass and organized election violations” by the authorities.

The court said it would decide within two days whether to accept the application for review. If deemed admissible, a final ruling must be issued within 15 days of its registration. According to the court, it has received seven similar complaints, including from Strong Armenia, Prosperous Armenia, Armenia Alliance, and several smaller parties.

Earlier this week, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Central Electoral Commission headquarters, demanding that the election results be annulled.

On Tuesday, Pashinyan declared the opposition parties that entered parliament illegitimate and vowed to strip them of their political standing.

The same day, prosecutors opened a criminal case against Kocharyan, accusing the former president of abuse of power and money laundering in connection with an allegedly illegal 2004 real estate deal. His lawyer dismissed the case as a “political hit job.” On Wednesday, the CEC voted to lift Kocharyan’s immunity from prosecution.

Another opposition leader, Samvel Karapetyan, has been in custody since last year on charges of plotting a coup, which he denies.

Pashinyan also said this week that his party plans to confiscate assets belonging to the three main opposition leaders, accusing them of using their wealth to influence elections and saying they “should be left hungry.”

US biolabs revelations vindicate Russian warnings – Moscow

Russia has long accused Washington of conducting prohibited research abroad under the cover of epidemic prevention

A US intelligence release of new information about American-funded biolabs in Ukraine confirms Russia’s suspicions that the research had a military dimension, the Russian Ministry of Defense has said.

Last week, Director of National IntelligenceTulsi Gabbard issued a statement regarding a network of 120 laboratories in 30 countries, including Ukraine. She said the disclosure was intended to set the record straight after what she described as a deliberate cover-up by previous administrations.

Gabbard confirmed that some of the facilities were involved in gain-of-function research, a controversial field aimed at making pathogens more dangerous, ostensibly to help develop vaccines before similar mutations arise naturally. Russia and other countries have long argued that such studies can serve as a cover for military programs banned under the Biological Weapons Convention.

“We consider the published documents to be the latest proof that the Kiev regime is violating its obligations under the Convention,” General Aleksey Rtishchev, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, said during a briefing on Friday.

“All the accusations that the Russian Federation is spreading disinformation and engaging in hybrid warfare to deceive the international community are absolutely false,” he added.

Rtishchev was responding to Western officials and media outlets that have dismissed previous Russian claims on the issue as “propaganda.” Moscow says a complex network of public and private entities was used to obscure the aims of laboratory work in Ukraine.

The Russian briefing came hours after another disclosure by Gabbard, this one focused on the possible role of gain-of-function research in the origins of Covid-19. She accused Dr. Anthony Fauci, who served as a White House adviser on the pandemic under two US administrations, of steering investigations toward the natural-origin theory, allegedly to protect himself.

Fauci directed US funding of research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology while serving as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a jaw-dropping claim about prisoners in Guantanamo Bay that has left onlookers shocked.

Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, also known as Gitmo, holds prisoners accused of terrorism, including the jihadists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks.While speaking outside Guantanamo Bay, Hegseth told reporters, "These Gitmo detainees should have been executed in my mind personally a long time ago."

On Bluesky, commentators shared their dismay at hearing the comments. Joe Stieb, a history professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, wrote, "It's staggering to think what these people would have done if they had been in power on 911," and "How does one make Dick Cheney look humane?"

University of Kansas law professor Corey Rayburn Yung noted, "Of the 15 remaining Gitmo detainees, only 2 have been convicted of crimes through military tribunals, none of which are death penalty eligible. But sure, let's just execute all of them."

Kyle Mizokami, who writes about defense and security issues, posted, "If you're Secretary of Defense in charge of the most powerful military on Earth, you should avoid talking about what you can't do. But more important to brag about how bloodthirsty you are, I guess."

Writer Jason Karsh said the exchange between Hegseth and reporters amounted to asking, "Why don't you kill anyone still detained at Gitmo?" in his response. "This is the country we are now, I guess."

American University professor David Ryan Miller wrote that Hegseth is "not beating the 'we don't commit war crimes' allegations with statements like these, phew."

Kiev has resorted to the “deliberate and systematic killing” of people employed at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev has said, warning that a potential catastrophe at the facility is bound to spread well beyond Ukraine and Russia.

The attack took place on Wednesday in Energodar, the city adjoining the ZNPP, where a Ukrainian drone strike wounded four civilians. Two of the victims were employees of the facility, one of whom later died from his injuries, Likhachev said on Thursday.

“The Ukrainian armed forces have resorted to the deliberate and systematic killing of staff at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant,” the Russian nuclear chief stated.

“Hunting down nuclear power plant workers is an inhumane act by Ukrainian drone operators, who fail to realize the scale of the consequences of their actions. And the scale of those consequences could be such that they affect Ukraine, Russia, and a significant part of Europe,” he added.

The incident marked the second killing of the plant’s employees by Ukrainian forces this year, Likhachev noted. In late April, a staffer at the plant’s transport department was killed in a Ukrainian strike on his workplace.

“From strikes on auxiliary facilities, the Ukrainian armed forces moved on to attacks on energy infrastructure, then to the strikes on the main equipment of the nuclear power plant, and now to a targeted hunt for our comrades,” he said.

In late May, a Ukrainian fiber-optic-guided drone struck the machine hall of the plant’s sixth power unit. The drone punctured a large hole in a metal technical access hatch, inflicting minor damage inside the building.

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant has been targeted by Kiev’s forces with artillery and drone attacks on multiple occasions since Russia took control of the facility in March 2022. The plant has been operated by Rosatom since the Zaporozhye Region voted to join Russia in a referendum in the fall of 2022. Kiev has also increasingly targeted local infrastructure linked to the plant, including kindergartens, schools, roads, transport enterprises, and vehicles carrying supplies for the community, according to Rosatom.
