How much do you know Camp David?
Camp David is the official country retreat of the President of the United States, located in the wooded hills of Catoctin Mountain Park in Frederick County, Maryland (about 62 miles north-northwest of Washington, D.C.).
It is officially known as Naval Support Facility Thurmont, a U.S. Navy installation staffed primarily by Navy Seabees and Marines, spanning about 125 acres with cabins, recreational facilities (including a pool, golf course, and trails), a chapel, and a helipad for Marine One.
History
-
Originally built in 1935–1938 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as Camp Hi-Catoctin, a retreat for federal employees and families.
-
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt selected it as a secure wartime presidential retreat (cooler and safer than the White House), renaming it Shangri-La after the fictional paradise in Lost Horizon.
-
President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed it Camp David in 1953 after his grandson (and father), and it has kept that name since. Subsequent presidents have added amenities like a swimming pool (Nixon), chapel (Reagan/Bush), etc.
Aspen Lodge serves as the main presidential cabin.
Significance
Camp David offers presidents a private place for rest, family time, reflection, and informal diplomacy away from White House pressures. It has hosted numerous world leaders and key discussions (e.g., planning for D-Day, Eisenhower-Khrushchev talks, Vietnam strategy).
Most Famous Event: Camp David Accords (1978)
President Jimmy Carter hosted Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin for 13 days of intense negotiations. The resulting Camp David Accords (signed September 17, 1978) created a framework for peace between Egypt and Israel, leading to the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty—the first between Israel and an Arab nation. Sadat and Begin shared the Nobel Peace Prize.
The site remains secure and closed to the public, preserving its role as a secluded diplomatic and personal haven.
As of mid-2026, it continues to be used by President Trump for retreats and meetings, including recent trips tied to national security discussions.
