Montrealers may want to keep an eye on the sky Sunday afternoon.

Aircraft from the Patrouille de France, the French Air and Space Force's aerobatic demonstration team, are expected to soar over Montreal at about 2:15 p.m., according to the Canadian Armed Forces. The team is scheduled to pass over Quebec City about 15 minutes later.

The flyby is intended to highlight the longstanding co-operation between the French and Canadian military, as well as ties between France, Quebec and Canada.

The aircraft will follow the St. Lawrence River before landing at Canadian Forces Base Bagotville in Saguenay for a brief stop. The team is returning to France after participating in the "Liberté 250" mission in the United States.

The Canadian Armed Forces said the aircraft will fly at an altitude of at least 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle along their route. The flyby will take place only if weather conditions permit.

Canada Day cleanup continues as Ottawa deals with flooding, electrical hazards, downed trees

As cleanup work continued on Friday, July 3, after the Canada Day storms, the City of Ottawa said about 2,000 basements in the national capital had experienced flooding.

In a memo to city council, the office of Ryan Perrault, general manager of Emergency and Protective Services, said Ottawa Fire Services had responded to more than 700 calls “related to electrical hazards, downed power lines, and other storm-related emergencies”.

Downed trees were another major problem following the severe weather on July 1. According to Perrault’s office, Forestry Services had received more than 150 requests for hazardous and fallen trees, and was continuing to respond to them.

It said most of the approximately 100 traffic signal issues in the city had been resolved by Friday afternoon.

“The City’s Emergency Coordination Centre remains activated, and we continue to operate in Enhanced Operations to coordinate recovery efforts across City departments and partner agencies,” the memo stated.

While nearly 59 years have passed since something crashed into the waters off of Shag Harbour, Shelburne County, the Oct. 4, 1967, UFO incident continues to intrigue people.

“I came to see an alien,” jokes Neil Ross when he and his wife Diane, visiting from Ontario, stop into the Shag Harbour UFO Interpretive Centre on an overcast Friday afternoon recently.

“There’s one right here,” replies volunteer Shelley Gormley, creative director with the Shag Harbour UFO Incident Society, pointing to a jar on the counter.

The couple was just driving by when they spotted the UFO Centre.

“We didn’t know about it. We drove by and saw it and decided to stop in and see what it’s all about,” said Ross.

The Ruby Princess departed San Francisco on Friday, June 12, for a 20-day round-trip journey from San Francisco to Canada and Alaska.

On Sunday, June 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) received a report of an outbreak.

A man with “a lengthy history of violence” who was deported from the U.S. back to Guyana in 2005 after being convicted of drug offences, then came to Canada as a refugee and later attacked a stranger in Toronto, is moving towards greater freedoms even though he “continues to represent a significant threat to the public,” according to a recent decision from the Ontario Review Board (ORB).

Delroy Apple — who has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality traits, and a severe amphetamine-type substance use disorder — was found not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder in April 2020 for an aggravated assault the summer before that left a stranger in Toronto with multiple stab wounds.

“On July 17, 2019, Mr. Apple was in a convenience store in Toronto when he suddenly attacked the victim, a stranger to him, by shattering two glass bottles from a shelf, wrestling the victim to the floor, and stabbing him multiple (times) with the shattered bottles. Store staff intervened, and the victim was taken to a trauma centre for treatment of stab wounds sustained in the attack,” said the June 25 decision from the independent tribunal that regularly reviews the status of individuals found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder.

Apple “has an extensive criminal record beginning in 2005 in New Jersey, when he was convicted of drug charges,” said the decision.

“From 2012 through 2018 he was convicted of 39 criminal offences in Canada. The convictions include, amongst others, sexual assault x2, assault with a weapon, armed robbery, assault peace officer, and multiple convictions for indecent assault, and breaches of probation and recognizance.” Continue…
