Abelardo Sanchez, a 39-year-old citizen of Mexico who had been living in Dublin, Ireland before fleeing to Austria, was extradited to face justice for allegedly producing child sexual abuse material. Sanchez made his first appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Juan F. Alanis on June 8 in McAllen.

Special agents discovered an online account that contained child sexual abuse material during an investigation, with some of the material appearing to have been produced by Sanchez dating back to 2014.

Despite the controversy, Prime Minister Mark Carney participated in Sunday’s parade alongside Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.

Carney shook hands with spectators, posed for selfies, and interacted with parade-goers along the route.

At one point, he encouraged attendees carrying water guns to spray him, theatrically stumbling backward after being drenched before moving along.

When the Prime Minister was asked by CP24 how the event was going, Carney joked that “it’s been wet,” referring to both the water guns and changing weather conditions.

“The whole city coming together, actually the whole world is coming together,” Carney said.

“We’ve got people from Ghana, we’ve got people from Grenada, we’ve [even] got people from the United States coming to Canada to celebrate freedoms.”

The appearance marked Carney’s first time participating in Toronto’s pride parade since becoming Prime Minister.

Chow was also seen participating in the Dyke March as Pride Weekend events continued across the city.

In one video posted on X, Chow is seen saying “Free Palestine.”

Nearly one in 10 Canadians who were admitted to hospitals from the emergency department during the 2024-2025 fiscal year spent more than 48 hours waiting on a stretcher or in a chair before being assigned a bed, a new study suggests.

The report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) also found that, out of 16.1 million ER visits last year, roughly 1.5 million patients spent more than 14 hours in the emergency department.

“There’s a national crisis around emergency services because we’ve optimized everything,” Paul Parks, a past president of the Alberta Medical Association and ER physician, said in the report. “We’ve taken all the elasticity out of the system, but the tap is still flowing. There’s a crisis: insufficient connected community resources, and little continuing care and long-term care.”

The findings indicate that many emergency departments throughout Canada suffer from overcrowding, shortages in staffing, and insufficient bed and stretcher capacity, all of which have made it harder to meet rising demand.

Those shortages, paired with high levels of serious emergencies, can leave some patients waiting for long periods of time, the report said.

Acuity is the primary driver of the wait time for an initial physician assessment, meaning patients with the most serious medical needs are seen first. That can leave the elderly and patients with chronic illnesses like diabetes or hypertension with long waits in the emergency department, the report said. Continue…

An 11-year-old Ontario boy who died of rabies after an encounter with a bat should offer a wakeup call for people to be more cautious of such experiences, doctors say.

The warning comes in a newly released report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal titled “Fatal Rabies in a Chid.”

“Any direct human contact with a bat, even in the absence of a visible bite or scratch, is an indication for PEP and should be discussed with public health authorities,” the doctors write in the report. PEP is short for post-exposure prophylaxis, and refers to a combination of antibodies and a vaccine given to the patient.

The boy’s family reported that, during a visit to a cottage in northern Ontario in 2024, he had been awoken by a bat on his nose and mouth. He swatted the bat off his face, and his father caught it in a cooking pot and released it outside. Officially the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) but colloquially known as Canadarm2, it’s Canada’s most visible contribution to the International Space Station.

Launched into orbit by a space shuttle in 2001 and attached to the station by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and NASA astronaut Scott Parazynski, it was designed with a 15-year lifespan in mind. It’s almost twice that age now.

“It’s ageing gracefully and showing signs of wear,” said Jason Dyer, Houston-based deputy liaison manager with the Canadian Space Agency, at a NASA briefing on Thursday.

“However, this graceful ageing was always part of the original design. The Canadian Space Agency and its partner MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates designed these joints and the end effectors to be replaced.” Continue…
