A transgender biological male former prostitute is running for mayor of Hamilton, Ontario, and if that wasn’t crazy enough, recent campaign footage shows him giving his speeches using a sock puppet with googly eyes.

“Scarlett Gillespie,” who previously went by the name “Jelena Vermilion,” currently serves as the executive director of the Sex Workers’ Action Program (SWAP) Hamilton and has long advocated for sex workers’ rights, housing issues, and trans-related causes.

Gillespie received the YWCA Hamilton Women of Distinction Award in 2024 for his work.

He announced his candidacy for mayor earlier this year and is registered for the municipal election scheduled for October 26.

Gillespie’s campaign platform focuses on affordable housing, tenant protections, climate justice, greater transparency at City Hall, community-led safety initiatives, and strengthening the local arts sector, according to his website.

The candidate has described himself as a “community organizer” and “activist with lived experience” working directly with “marginalized groups.”

In a video from a campaign event on Sunday, shared by Libs of TikTok, Gillespie is at a microphone with a sock puppet in one hand.

Gillespie uses the puppet to help deliver portions of his speech, including a story about feeling disrespected.

“Meet Scarlett Gillespie, a candidate for mayor in Hamilton, Ontario. He pretends to be a woman and uses a sock puppet in his speeches. Canada is a circus,” Libs of TikTok wrote in the post with the video.

A JetBlue pilot could be heard talking with Kennedy Tower about the drone strike. The pilot said the jet collided with a drone during a turn about two miles before landing. When the controller asked for confirmation, the pilot said the object struck "right above the cockpit."

Authorities have described that a suspect, who is now on the run, had left a mail package in the lobby of a residential building that detonated around 9pm on Monday, unleashing what police called a "powerful explosion".

The victims have since been identified as Vadym Iermolaiev, his wife and their 13-year-old child. They all survived the bombing, with Iermolaiev and his wife having sustained serious injuries and are being treated in the hospital. Both are in critical condition with reports saying the woman sustained the most severe wounds.

The entrance to their luxury apartment building was shown seriously damaged, with emerging CCTV footage soon after showing a suspect fleeing toward the French border donned in a dark shirt and bucket hat.

Iermolaiev and his wife had been taken to hospital with serious injuries, while their child was also wounded, French authorities said.

Monaco's Minister of State Christophe Mirmand told AFP that the bomb contained bolts and pellets, clearly pointing to a device made for maximum killing of the target. He confirmed the government is not yet investigating it as a terror attack, but attempted murder or a targeted killing.

Calgary's only supervised consumption site closes

Calgary's only supervised "supervised consumption" drug site (SCS) is being permanently closed as of Tuesday.

The Alberta government announced in March it would be closing Calgary's only safe consumption site at Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre, along with the its only Lethbridge site at the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre, both closing on Tuesday.

This was Calgary's first SCS, introduced back in 2017, eventually opening the Beltline neighborhood at Sheldon Chumir.

As reported by CBC News, it has received criticism from many for the site's public drug use and calls to police in the area.

SCS allows people to use pre-obtained drugs while being watched by medical staff.

Alberta is replacing the site with a rapid access addiction medicine (RAAM) clinic at the same location, providing same-day access to addiction counseling and case management.

It will also have a 24/7 rapid response team near the Chumir, which will respond to overdoses, provide people with healthcare services, and offer withdrawal management.

The government will increase the capacity at the Renfrew Recovery Centre, and do the same for the Calgary Recovery Community and Alpha House.

Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis stated at the announcement of the SCS closure back in March that this will take people out of the cycle of addiction and instead will focus on treatment and recovery services.

Previously, back in November, the government closed the SCS at Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital, although the city still has two sites open, including at the George Spady Centre and Radius Community Health and Healing.

It also previously closed the Red Deer overdose prevention site at Safe Harbour Shelter Services, which shut down in March 2025.

A research study published in March by the Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence (CoRE) published in the scientific journal Addiction, found the closure of the overdose site did not lead to an increase in overdose deaths.

The decision, released on June 29, said Montrose Properties was seeking to revisit matters that had already been resolved, and the application was dismissed. Montrose Properties is an owner and developer of industrial workspaces located in Richmond, an island city located immediately south of Vancouver in the Metro Vancouver region.

Young determined that the company’s effort to reopen a finalized trial to become an additional defendant amounted to an abuse of process.

“Although Montrose did not have formal notice of the (original) proceeding, it had knowledge of the proceedings, and chose not to apply to be added as party until long after the conclusion of the trial,” Young said in her 34-page ruling.
