California State Senator Scott Wiener helped kill a bill that would have barred registered sex offenders from running for or holding public office in California.

On Tuesday, Wiener’s Senate Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee defeated Assembly Bill 2753 after the measure had sailed through the State Assembly unanimously.

Authored by Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria of Merced, the bill would have prohibited anyone required to register as a sex offender under California’s three-tier system from seeking or serving in state or local offices such as city council, school board, or the legislature.

The legislation was introduced after registered sex offender Rene Campos, who pleaded no contest in 2018 to a misdemeanor involving possession of child sex abuse material, announced a bid for Fresno City Council.

Soria had promised her constituents she would act to prevent sex offenders from running.

“It’s deeply disturbing that this issue is unfolding in my own backyard. The idea that a registered sex offender could run for public office in the City of Fresno is unacceptable,” Soria said in a press release announcing the bill. “This bill will ensure once and for all that registered sex offenders are prohibited from seeking public office in California, so voters can have confidence that those seeking to represent them meet the most basic standards of public trust.”

Wiener, who chairs the committee, opposed the bill and said he would support it only if amended to apply solely to lifetime Tier 3 registrants.

When Soria refused to accept that change, the measure died.

Conservative commentator Eric Daugherty posted a video from the proceedings, writing that Wiener said the bill was “dangerous” because the crimes “aren’t a huge deal” and that “some people just have flaws,” adding that “this guy needs to be looked into.” Continue…

The video of the reservists marching showed noticeable lack of synchronization, uneven steps, and loose formation discipline.

The 7th Toronto Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, is a part-time reserve unit based in Toronto. Reservists typically train one evening per week and on weekends while maintaining civilian careers.

The Ministry of Public Safety says its new registry regulations for foreign agents working in Canada won’t disclose the amounts these agents have been paid, as doing so could expose “sensitive” information.

The new Foreign Influence Transparency and Accountability Regulations, released July 1, say the public registry will list foreign agents by name, including their clients and what they do in Canada, along with whether or not they have been compensated, but will not list specific amounts of money or other benefits received, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

“[Public Safety] intends to include in the registry whether compensation or other benefits are provided but does not intend to publish specific dollar amounts and include only a high-level description of other types of benefits,” the ministry wrote in a July 1 release about the new regulations.

“This approach is intended to enhance transparency for the public while avoiding unnecessary disclosure of sensitive or detailed information.”

Under the finalized regulations, however, foreign agents must disclose details of their money or benefits received, but these won’t be made public.

Canada’s new regulations differ from the U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act, which has been law since 1938, in which both the government and the public receive detailed financial disclosures, including specific payments and receipts. Continue…

While the average full-time compensation for a federal bureaucrat is estimated to be $161,900 for 2026, federal bureaucracy growth has outpaced that of Canada’s population, with several departments and agencies more than doubling their number of employees since 2016.

Ottawa and British Columbia have reached an infrastructure agreement that maintains the northern oil tanker ban while outlining how the federal government could proceed with a new oil pipeline through the province.

Alberta has advocated for the tanker ban to be lifted so that an oil pipeline to B.C.’s North Coast could ship up to one million barrels per day of oil to Asian markets. Prime Minister Mark Carney had also previously suggested that the ban, which was implemented back in 2019, could be overturned to export oil from the new pipeline.

Speaking to reporters on July 2, B.C. Premier David Eby said he was “proud to say” that talks with the federal government had preserved the tanker ban, “protecting British Columbia’s pristine northern coast and the $2 billion-plus economy that relies on it.”

While Eby has expressed opposition to the building of the pipeline, he said that such a project is ultimately under the federal government’s jurisdiction. Eby said Carney’s decision to coordinate with B.C. on the pipeline is a “sign of leadership and a commitment to collaborative federalism in Canada.” Continue…

The federal Justice Department found that one of its executives committed serious wrongdoing, including the misuse of public funds and gross mismanagement, but the individual retired before any disciplinary action could be taken, according to a report first published by Blacklock's Reporter.

In a disclosure under the Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act, Attorney General Sean Fraser's department said the executive had authorized work under a contract that was outside the scope of the agreement and approved invoiced services that were not adequately supported by contractual documentation.

"The executive was informed of the conclusion of the investigation establishing that wrongdoing had been committed, and was advised the matter would be addressed through a disciplinary process," the department wrote. "However, the executive retired from the public service before any administrative measures could be considered."

The department did not identify the executive, disclose how much public money was involved, say when the misconduct occurred or explain why the matter was not referred to police. Continue…

Proceedings resumed today in the British Columbia Supreme Court in Kelowna in what is expected to be the final day of arguments in drag performer Tyson Cook's libel lawsuit against Action4Canada.

Cook, who performs under the stage name Frieda Whales, alleges the organization defamed him through its publications. Action4Canada denies the allegations and is asking the court to dismiss the claim under B.C.'s Protection of Public Participation Act, the province's anti-SLAPP legislation.

Action4Canada is a Canadian non-profit organization that helps defend constitutional freedoms and the Judeo-Christian biblical principles that helped shape Canada.

The proceeding being heard this week relates to Cook's civil claim against Action4Canada and does not involve the other defendants originally named in the lawsuit, filed in 2024.

Among the publications at issue is an Action4Canada petition that states: "Let's take a look at Drag man, Tyson Cook, AKA Miss Freida Whales…" The petition alleges that Cook created videos "depicting murders that included cannibalism and Satanic-like rituals," that his social media contains sexually vulgar and profane language, and that he performs as a drag queen in local libraries for children while working as a certified education assistant with children with special needs in the Kelowna School District.
