Scientists Find Poison-Resistant Mutant Rats Spreading Across America’s Biggest Cities

Rats and mice in major American cities are developing genetic mutations that make them harder to kill with common poisons, according to new research from Rutgers University.

Scientists examined nearly 300 rodents from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., and found widespread signs of resistance to widely used exterminator chemicals.

Around five out of every six rodents tested carried at least one mutation linked to reduced sensitivity to poison.

More than two-thirds also had additional genetic changes previously tied to resistance against common rodenticides.

The mutations were especially common in house mice, which researchers said appear to be adapting faster than larger brown rats, also known as sewer rats.

“Genetic mutation is not that special in these creatures,” lead researcher Jin-Jia Yu said. “But we found that the house mouse shows a lot of genetic mutations related to rodenticide resistance.” Continue…

Denmark is considering a nationwide ban on the Islamic call to prayer, with the country’s immigration minister saying it should not be heard “over Danish rooftops.”

Morten Bødskov said the government will reopen an investigation into whether the noise can be legally prohibited across the country.

“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops,” Bødskov told Danish news agency Ritzau.

“It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”

The Adhan is traditionally recited five times a day to call Muslims to prayer. In some countries, it is broadcast through loudspeakers attached to mosques or minarets.

This is the third major earthquake to hit Japan this year.

A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday evening.

Conflicting reports state there were two earthquakes back-to-back – a 7.1 and a 7.5.

“The U.S. Geological Survey said the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and its epicenter was west of the community of Morón,, located along the country’s Caribbean coast, about 168 kilometers (104 miles) west of Caracas. The quake had a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles),” AP reported.

“Minutes later, the USGS reported an even larger 7.5-magnitude earthquake. The second quake had a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter was 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Morón,” AP reported.

However, other reports claim the original 7.1 quake was upgraded to a 7.5.

Buildings collapsed amid widespread reports of damage and injuries in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.

The death toll can reach over 10,000, according to the USGS.

According to the the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake is located in Montalban, Venezuela – 130 miles east of Caracas.

A 19-year-old Afghan man, Massoud S., was tried Monday at the Aix-en-Provence court for sexual assault against six goats, one of which died, and a 6-month-old lamb at an educational farm. He has been convicted and sentenced to 30 months in prison and a ban from French territory.

Afghan migrant Massoud S. was initially charged with “serious abuse or act of cruelty against a domestic, tame, or captive animal.” He continued to deny the rapes in this case despite DNA evidence and being caught redhanded raping a goat. He even told a court psychologist that anyone who did rape the animals only did it to “not rape a woman” since “a goat could not identify him afterward.”

The sexual assaults occurred between February and April and on top of the DNA evidence, his phone location also had him pinged to the crime scene.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” he told the magistrates regarding the ample evidence against him.

Massoud S. reportedly repeatedly raped the animals, which all belonged to an animal shelter and educational farm “Un moment” in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, near Marseille.

Released on bail twice to attack Alberta children again

Grande Prairie police are looking for other potential victims of Joseph Kidd, who has been previously charged with multiple sexual assault offences and released twice on bail.

On Thursday, Grande Prairie RCMP Supt. Mark MacDougald, claimed 32-year-old Kidd had been a part four different investigations and is currently being kept in custody until July 2.

The first investigation into Kidd occurred in April when Grande Prairie RCMP and Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) looked into alleged sexual assault after a 14 year old victim from BC met Kidd over social media.

Kidd allegedly drove to pick up the victim form BC and brought them back to Grande Prairie where the victim was assulted at his home, where the victim stayed for one week.

The victim escaped Kidd's residence after he left for work.

From this incident, Kidd was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, forcible confinement, assault while choking, and two charges of unsafe storage of a firearm.

After being brought in front of a judge for a bail hearing on April 20 he was released 10 days later under "numerous conditions."

On May 10, GPPS received an emergency call at Kidd's residence.

"The investigation revealed Kidd had driven to Lloydminster to pick up an 18-year-old female," stated MacDougald.

"They drove back to his residence in Grande Prairie, where Kidd allegedly assaulted her as she refused to engage in sexual acts with him."

"Kidd was arrested and again charged with assault, assault while choking, sexual assault, and three counts of failing to comply with release conditions."

After a bail hearing, Kidd was released on June 1, with a $7,500 cash bail and ordered to attend Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie at the end of June.

Again on June 18 a 15-year-old female attended the Grande Prairie and reported Kidd had allegedly been following her.

She had met Kidd in early June where he had offered her a ride in her vehicle and she was sexually assaulted before leaving the vehicle.

MacDougald claimed three different incidents occurred between Kidd and the victim in the span of June.

Kidd was again charged with "criminal harassment, sexual interference, sexual assault, and again failed to comply with for these conditions."

"Also on June 18, Grande Prairie RCMP received a 911 call from the mother of a 12-year-old female who stated a male driving a yellow Chevrolet Camaro convertible tried to lure her child into the vehicle."

"RCMP and the GPPS responded immediately, completed immediate patrols, and located Kidd driving the suspect vehicle."

"As a result of that investigation, Kidd was charged with abduction of a person under the age of 14, and failed to comply with release conditions after a judicial interim release hearing."

On Kidd's ordered court appearance on June 22, Kidd did not attend, and was remanded into custody until July 2.

Since Kidd was contacting some of his victims through social media, the RCMP and GPPS believe there might be more victims who still may not have come forward.

"If you believe you are a victim of Kidd or have information regarding any of these incidents, please contact the RCMP or the police of jurisdiction in your nearest community," stated MacDougald

"Parents and guardians, please show a picture to your children and talk to them about safe use of social media."

110 Km/h Speed Limit Expands to More Ontario Highways

Speed limits will increase to 110 kilometres per hour on several stretches of Ontario highways beginning this summer, the province has announced.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria told reporters the province is raising the speed limit from 100 kilometres per hour to 110 kilometres per hour on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways.

The incremental rollout begins on June 26 on sections of Highway 401 and Highway 416 in eastern Ontario, Sarkaria said at a June 24 press conference in King City, Ont. Other sections of Highway 401, 402, 403, 416, 417 and Queen Elizabeth Way will change by Sept. 30.

“This work is critical to improve travel times for families, commuters, and workers and will benefit millions of drivers,” Sarkaria said. “And once in effect, nearly 89 percent of our provincial highway network will have the posted speed limit of 110 kilometres per hour, up from 43 percent today.”

Nearly 89 percent of Ontario’s highways will have an increased speed limit by October, Premier Doug Ford said in a June 24 social media post. The adjustment corresponds to the intended design speed of the highways, he added.

“We’re increasing the speed limits wherever it can be done safely,” he said in a video with Sarkaria that was filmed on the side of Highway 401. Continue…

A $28,872.50 fine imposed under Nova Scotia’s now-invalidated “woods ban” has been revoked, ending the enforcement actions against a resident who deliberately violated the ban in protest last summer.

The Halifax Crown Attorney’s Office has withdrawn the ticket against Canadian Armed Forces veteran Jeffrey Evely, who was set to appear in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on July 22, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) announced in a June 24 press release.

Lawyers backed by the Justice Centre said they had planned to argue that the Nova Scotia Supreme Court’s spring ruling in favour of Evely’s constitutional challenge to the province-wide prohibition essentially eliminated the prosecutor’s ability to enforce the ticket.

The Crown attorney typically withdraws a ticket if the statute under which it was issued is struck down by the courts.

Constitutional lawyer Marty Moore said he welcomed the prosecutor’s decision.

“This outcome confirms what should have been clear after the Supreme Court’s ruling: governments cannot continue enforcing penalties that arise from unconstitutional state action,” Moore said in the JCCF press release. Continue…

Aging, outdated or moribund technology and data management practices across the RCMP are undermining its ability to effectively police and protect Canadians and will require significant investment, according to a new report.

In February, the RMCP’s Management Advisory Board (MAB) sent the police force’s commissioner, Mike Duheme, a comprehensive “advisory letter” with a stark message about its information management/information technology (IM/IT) systems.

Old and aging IM/IT systems are failing and are preventing the RCMP from adopting the latest technologies, meaning the national police force is also falling increasingly behind its partners technologically, wrote MAB member Doug Moen.

Current IM/IT limitations, such as aging infrastructure, siloed legacy systems, and isolated databases, adversely affect policing effectiveness, evidence-based decision-making, and, therefore, public safety. Temporary fixes are costly and unsustainable,” reads the letter from Moen, who chairs the MAB’s Finance and Administration Standing Committee.

Afghan war veteran battling DND over privacy violation and benefit payment snafu

An Afghan war veteran is battling with National Defence after the department violated her privacy by providing her banking information to another military member and then erroneously transferring a payment for that individual into her account.

The Department of National Defence is now demanding that retired Sgt. Tara Bertram pay back the $21,794.89 it sent her by mistake. DND has also warned Bertram that she could face interest charges if there are delays in paying back the money.

The debacle started in the summer of 2025, when Bertram, a combat veteran who originally served in the army in Afghanistan before transferring to the air force, was leaving the Canadian Forces on a medical disability.

With a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, she was provided a flurry of payments from the Canadian Forces. Those included a final paycheque, payment for unused leave, back pay, severance pay, payment for long-term disability and disability benefits from Veterans Affairs.

In January 2026, Bertram received a notice from DND saying that she had received severance payments of $17,187.24 in August and $2,872.73 in December that were supposed to go to another military member. DND was demanding the return of the money.

“I didn’t pick up on the extra payment,” said Bertram, who is in New Brunswick. “My mental health is so bad I don’t manage the finances. My spouse does that and they wouldn’t have known.”

When Bertram dug further into what had happened, the department admitted to an “administrative error.” The money was supposed to go to another individual with a similar last name.

But Bertram, 44, said the department’s story didn’t make sense.

As the country mourned the eight killed and others injured by a shooter who attacked a secondary school in interior British Columbia, more than 10,000 anti-LGBTQ posts expressing hate and calling for violence were made the next day by Canadians online, according to an intelligence brief.

The details, contained in a memo prepared by the Canadian Security Intelligence Services’ integrated threat assessment centre, warned that those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer were likely to face “increased intimidation, harassment, criminal and extremist violence,” along with public officials affiliated with the community.

“Changes to the hate speech policies of major social media platforms, the amplification of hateful rhetoric on social media, and the increased visibility of (LGBTQ) individuals and events have likely heightened the risk of violence in Canada targeting the (LGBTQ) community, including public officials,” reads the assessment, obtained by National Post. Passengers on board an Air Canada flight on Wednesday have described how they “instantly started praying” when the plane swerved violently, following the captain experiencing a medical issue.

Flight AC7664, which was being operated by regional partner PAL Airlines, was en route from Newark, New Jersey, to Halifax when it was diverted to Boston Logan Airport after the pilot reportedly became incapacitated.

Rodney McDonald, who was among the 61 passengers onboard, told ABC News that it appeared the pilot had suffered a seizure during the flight.

“The moment the plane swerved, I knew something was wrong because it was not turbulence,” McDonald, who was travelling with his wife and two sons, told the outlet.

“The flight started swerving violently. It really felt like someone had jilted the controls, and then it happened over and over again,” he added.

“And, you know, every thought goes through your mind, you start praying. My boys instantly started praying.”

McDonald described how he rushed to help the pilot, who had been dragged out of the cockpit by a flight attendant.

“(I) realized that the pilot was out of control physically, not violently, like it was clear that he was not in control of his faculties and needed to be restrained,” he said. Continue…
