When challenged further, she added that the citation would be for disorderly conduct. The preachers repeatedly argued that offensive speech is protected by the First Amendment and cannot be criminalized merely because someone claims to be offended.

The company was founded by CEO Zach Abrams, the CEO of Bridge, the stablecoin framework firm acquired by payments app Stripe in 2024.

Stripe has been active in designing new stablecoin and tokenized rails for the new age of finance, launching tools for customers and businesses to create their own stablecoin with Stripe’s Bridge. Bridge allows stablecoin conversions between a variety of fiat currencies, and transfers these tokens and settles transactions instantly, 24/7, compared to old-fashioned rails. Bridge is “an entirely new payments platform, built with stablecoins, to simplify global money movement,” the company says on its website. “Bridge works with the US government, aid organizations and creator platforms to disburse payments via stablecoins,” the company adds.

Abrams and co. have now come together to create a unified stablecoin, Open USD, described as “a shared stablecoin for global financial activity,” and is touted as “the first stablecoin designed as open infrastructure,” giving “businesses the economics, governance, and reliability they need to move money.”

Thousands of “errors” were made by Canadian doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers relating to cases of people undergoing euthanasia in the province of British Columbia, new information has revealed.

According to information obtained by a freedom of information request by Canadian Catholic News, an arm of the Catholic Register, a “Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Oversight 2024 Year End Report” highlights the mistakes by medical personnel.

A report of the Ministry of Health from British Columbia shows that over half of all assisted suicide or “MAiD” cases in the province in 2024 had mistakes, which needed government officials to review.

The third page of the report shows that some 4,169 people had asked to die by assisted suicide in 2024, which was up 10 percent from 2023. A bar graph in the report shows that of the some 4,190 cases that year, the MAiD Oversight Unit found 2,807 errors in 51.9 percent of the total “case outcomes.” Continue…

Prime Minister Mark Carney has handed over the engraved pistol that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave him at the NATO summit this week to the RCMP for decommissioning, the government says.

Carney, along with other world leaders, was presented a gun bearing his name, along with live ammunition, as he left the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, on July 8. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed that all NATO leaders received personalized pistols from Erdoğan.

The RCMP will render the pistol incapable of firing, and the ammunition that came with the gift has been left in Turkey, Global Affairs Canada said in a media statement.

“All official gifts are handled in accordance with applicable Canadian laws, security requirements, and government policies,” the department said.

Global Affairs didn’t disclose the type of the gun, but images released by the office of Lithuanian President ​Gitanas Nauseda showed what seemed to be a Gumusay .357 Magnum, a rare six-shooter made by Turkish arms producer MKE during the 1990s.

'Why are hardened criminals being allowed to remain?' Non-citizen convicted of manslaughter sentenced for drug and gun charges

A non-citizen with a manslaughter conviction was under court-ordered supervision when police found a loaded handgun, cocaine and fentanyl in his car.

David Jajua, 34, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years last month in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The offence dates to January 2024. At the time, he had already lost his immigration status. Jajua was a front-seat passenger in a car stopped in Addington Highlands, in eastern Ontario, north of Napanee. Under his seat, police found a loaded 9-mm handgun, about 80 grams of cocaine and about 12 grams of fentanyl, enough for roughly 120 doses. He was under a weapons prohibition at the time. He pleaded guilty to four counts: occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a firearm in breach of a prohibition order.

It was not his first serious conviction. Jajua had already been convicted of manslaughter, for which he served a federal penitentiary sentence. He also has prior convictions for robbery and drug trafficking. He was under community supervision when he was caught.

Jajua came to Canada from Sierra Leone when he was 13 years old. The sentencing decision did not state if he lost his immigration status before or after he was convicted of manslaughter, but the judge said he took it into consideration when deciding his sentence.

“Your inability to obtain lawful employment due to your immigration status created financial pressures that contributed to your involvement in drug trafficking,” Justice Graeme Mew wrote in his decision. That pressure could not overshadow the seriousness of the offence, the judge said, and he gave denunciation and deterrence the greatest weight. Continue…

A Toronto man found not criminally responsible for repeatedly sexually assaulting a “close female relative” over the course of seven months and assaulting and choking her while saying “I want to kill you,” has been granted an absolute discharge by the Ontario Review Board (ORB).

The man, identified only by his initials in a recent ORB decision, has also assaulted his father, a cab driver, and sexually assaulted “many others (up to 20, including a vulnerable elderly male patient at a forensic hospital)” as well as molesting children when he was six to nine years old, said the July 2 decision from the independent tribunal that regularly reviews the status of individuals found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder.

“In this case, the board cannot identify a real, significant risk of physical, or psychological, harm to members of the public that goes beyond the merely trivial or annoying,” said the decision.

The board agreed with the man’s psychiatrist that he “no longer requires the support of the forensic team” at the Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care, in St. Thomas, Ont., or “the oversight of the board to manage his risk of harm to the community.”

The man — who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, a mild intellectual disability, social anxiety disorder, and cannabis use disorder — was 21 when he was found not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder in November 2017 on charges including assault, uttering threats, sexual assault, and attempting to choke or strangle. For years an Ontario man was called “King” while orchestrating truckloads of cocaine and meth worth tens of millions of dollars to be smuggled from the United States into Canada, but at his sentencing in Los Angeles, Thursday, court heard of his struggles as an immigrant and of his “working-class life in Canada.”

Guramrit Sidhu, 63, of Brampton, Ont., who led a vast cross-border drug smuggling network of long-haul commercial truckers was given the minimum allowable sentence of 20 years in prison.

Sidhu was arrested in Canada in 2024 as the lead defendant in a sprawling international investigation.

He signed a plea agreement with the U.S. government in February, pleading guilty to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, admitting his management-level involvement in the network that smuggled large loads of meth and cocaine for distribution in Canada between 2020 and 2023.

Prosecutors told U.S. District Judge John Kronstadt that Sidhu’s operation was energetic and active — in just a one-month period in 2022, he arranged eight drug loads, totalling about 523 kilograms of meth and 347 kilograms of cocaine, which were seized by law enforcement. Prosecutors estimated the wholesale value of just that month’s tally was about US$16 million.

He could have faced a life sentence as a maximum penalty, but his sentence was lower for pleading guilty rather than fighting the charges at a trial. Continue…

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA — As the military band of the Saudi royal household belted out a rendition of Canada’s national anthem, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was thrilled.

“They have not played ‘O Canada’ for 26 years… And I was very proud,” Carney said of his whirlwind visit to Saudi Arabia this week, which marked the first time a Canadian prime minister had set foot in the country in over a quarter-century, and comes after recent years of strained relations. He said he complimented Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince and de facto leader, on the “absolutely flawless” performance.

“I hope that now that they’ve learned it… they will put it into practice multiple times,” Carney said.

Carney spent a packed day on Thursday meeting with top Saudi government and business officials before having lunch with the crown prince at the royal palace. There was a signing ceremony for several new deals at the Saudi Arabia-Canada Investment Forum, where the prime minister was joined by cabinet members François-Philippe Champagne, Anita Anand and David McGuinty.

Carney is leaving the country on Friday with Canadian and Saudi businesses having signed 13 new commercial agreements across a variety of sectors, including education, critical minerals, mining and artificial intelligence, but also a commitment that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund will attend the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto in September.

Canada, for its part, will participate in Expo 2030 in Riyadh, which Carney said will showcase “the best” of Canada. Continue…
