(AFP) —King Charles III will reveal his personal tax bill in a bid to improve transparency, Buckingham Palace confirmed to AFP on Sunday, as royal finances come under increasing public scrutiny in Britain.
British monarchs are legally exempt from paying certain taxes, though they have paid some duties voluntarily for decades.
They also have no obligation to disclose their private tax bills, but recent scandals surrounding the disgraced former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor have thrust the royal family’s finances into the spotlight.
Charles began releasing his personal tax information when he was heir to the throne, but will become the first monarch to disclose it.
“The decision to do so as Sovereign has come at the express wish of the King himself,” a palace spokesperson said in a statement released late Saturday to a limited number of British media outlets.
It added that the move was “part of the adaptations carried across” since Charles acceded to the throne in 2022.
“Our aim is to explain all elements of royal finances in a way that further enhances clarity and accessibility, while also placing it in its historical and constitutional context.
“To put it simply: we continue to modernise and evolve.”
Charles’s tax information will be shared on Thursday as part of the release of annual royal financial accounts, the BBC reported.
The head of the royal family gets money from various sources, including the publicly-funded Sovereign Grant as well as private duchy income worth tens of millions of pounds more.
The grant — an annual government payment to cover the costs of official duties by working royals —has increased markedly in 2025-2026, to £132.1 million ($175 million), compared with £86.3 million the prior financial year.
Meanwhile,Charles received £26.8 million in private income from the Duchy of Lancaster in 2024-25.
Profits from thehistoric duchy — a large, diversified portfolio of land, property, and investments managed like a modern business — funds personal expenses and some official duties.
It is the main source of private income for the head of the monarchy, with the heir — currently Charles’seldest son William, Prince of Wales — benefiting from a similar arrangement with his Duchy of Cornwall.
Under UK law, monarchs do not have to pay income, capital gains or inheritance taxes.

The UK parliament’s watchdog Public Accounts Committee has launched an inquiry into residential property arrangements provided to royals in the wake of the revelations.
Norman Baker, a former lawmaker and longtime critic of royal finances, told AFP earlier this yearthat Andrew’s situation had “opened the door” to greater scrutiny.

A public broadcasting official in Colorado appears to have escaped being terminated after posting a shocking birthday message aimed at President Donald Trump.
The controversy began over the weekend when the X account “Republicans Against Trump” sought negative comments about Trump’s 80th birthday on Saturday.
“Donald Trump turns 80 today. Any birthday wishes?” the account asked.
An account bearing the name Bob Greene responded with a message that quickly went viral online.
“A nice stroke that turns him into a drooling, pooping blob in a wheelchair unable to speak,” the account wrote.
The exchange was screenshotted and shared by the X account Libs of TikTok,which identified Greene as the board chair of Rocky Mountain PBS.

Libs of TikTok later posted what it said was a response from Rocky Mountain Public Media. According to the statement, the organization said it was aware of Greene’s post.Rocky Mountain Public Media said Greene’s comment did not reflect its values or opinions.
It further stated that “this level of discourse is never constructive to our collective efforts to strengthen the civic fabric of Colorado.” The message was signed by Christina “Chris” Dayyani and included gender pronouns in the signature.

What appears to be a highly coordinated foreign influence operation on behalf of Israel is flooding Xwith recycled old videos of Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an attempt to derail President Donald Trump’s Iran peace deal.
The goal of sharing the old, out-of-context videoseems to be to falsely portray Rubio as opposing Trump’s efforts to secure peace with Iranand to sow division among the president’s supporters andwithin the administration itself.
In a post about the effort on Saturday night, topTrump advisor Alex Bruesewitz highlighted how numerous accounts were reposting the exact same old clip, originally from February, while presenting the comments as if they were brand new and related to the current negotiations.
Bruesewitz warned, “Any ‘influencer’ amplifying those old clips today should not be trusted.”
Others pointed out additional accounts pushing almost identical wording with the clip.
Bruesewitz has documented aclear pattern of suspicious social media activity aligned with Israeli interestsaround the administration’s memorandum of understanding with Iran, which aims to end hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and advance broader talks.
Pro-Israel accounts, many of them very new, have also been spreading deliberate misinformation about the conditional reconstructionand investment fund tied to the deal, implying it will be paid by American taxpayers, which is false. Administration officials, including JD Vance, have clarified that it would be funded by Gulf states and private investors and would only become available if Iran fully complies with strict conditions.
In another Saturdaynight post, Bruesewitz stated he is now “enemy number one of the pro-war bots and ‘influencers’” simply for backing the president’s commitment to ending the conflict.

The report fueled speculation that discussions between Iran and the United States in Switzerland had been suspended or ended.
However, Barak Ravid of Axios cited a diplomat participating in the talks who disputed that account.
“The Iranians haven't left and the talks between them and the US are continuing,” the diplomat said.

Iran says broader talks hinge on ceasefire implementation
Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that negotiations on a final agreement cannot begin until key provisions of the memorandum ending the war are implemented, including a halt to fighting on all fronts and steps related to Iranian oil exports and frozen assets.
"The start of negotiations on a final agreement is contingent upon the implementation of clauses 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11," Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei wrote on X.
Baghaei said the talks in Switzerland were focused on implementing the memorandum's provisions, particularly clause 1, which he said requires "an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon."
He added that discussions were also reviewing measures designed to implement clause 10, concerning Iran's oil exports, and clause 11, covering the release of blocked Iranian assets.
