Political Career and Leadership

Jo Swinson (born 5 February 1980) is a British former politician who served as the Leader of the Liberal Democrats from July to December 2019. She was the first woman to lead the party and the first leader of a major UK political party born in the 1980s. Her tenure lasted less than five months, the shortest in the party's history, ending when she lost her parliamentary seat in the 2019 general election. She is the only Liberal Democrat leader to lose their own seat while in office.

Swinson served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for East Dunbartonshire during two periods: 2005–2015 and 2017–2019. Upon her initial election in 2005, she became the youngest MP in the House of Commons at the time. Between 2012 and 2015, she held the government role of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs during the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition. In this capacity, she introduced shared parental leave and extended the right to request flexible working.
