Some people argue that England’s political upheavals helped shape later ideas about resistance to monarchy. One often-cited example is Oliver Cromwell, a major figure in the English Civil War who led a government after the execution of King Charles I. Cromwell’s period, often described as the Commonwealth and Protectorate, was brief and complex… not a perfect match for the kind of constitutional republic the United States later established.

When the U.S. Constitution was written, the Founding generation drew on many influences, including English political traditions and broader Enlightenment thought about representation, rights, and limits on power. The U.S. system does not come from Cromwell alone, but it does reflect a long history of debate over how government should be constrained and accountable.

That’s why many Americans take pride that the Constitution, and the republic it creates, has endured despite many challenges. God bless America.
