Organisms on 3I/ATLAS? Telltale methane signatures detected: Avi Loeb
Updated: Jun 24, 2026 / 11:29 PM CDT
3I/ATLAS may not be an alien spacecraft, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t life on the interstellar comet that recently passed through our solar system.
NASA this week shared new analysis about the object that grabbed the Earth’s attention, including estimates 3I/ATLAS could be up to 12 billion years old — more than twice as old as this planetary system.
The comet also includes carbon and other elements that form the basis of life as humans know it, scientists said.
And along those lines, Harvard University theoretical physicist Avi Loeb notes another intriguing characteristic: 3I/ATLAS emitted methane, a potential biosignature, as it passed the sun.
“The question arises … Is it indicative that there are microbes in this iceberg?” he told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” on Wednesday. “You don’t need a lot of mass in microbes that are embedded within this object in order to generate observed methane.”
The observed data is another example of how there are “lots of puzzles about this visitor,” Loeb said.
Loeb is head of the Galileo Project, a research group that searches for evidence of extraterrestrial technology. For several months, he drew wide notice by speculating 3I/ATLAS could be some sort of alien tech, based on a host of anomalies that could not immediately be explained.
NASA has always considered the object a naturally occurring comet, albeit one with unusual features. Scientists say 3I/ATLAS is only the third known interstellar comet to enter our solar system and possibly the oldest.
At 12 billion years old, 3I/ATLAS was formed relatively soon after the “big bang” that spawned the universe 14 billion years ago.
Loeb leads new UAP advisory panel
Loeb is leading a new panel of civilian experts formed to advise federal authorities about “unidentified anomalous phenomena.”
Formation of the UAP Science Advisory Council comes as the Pentagon, at President Trump’s request, has begun releasing tranches of so-called UFO files, including videos of aerial objects that appear to defy conventional abilities of human-made craft.
Loeb says his panel can recommend ways to collect better data about UAP, which could help the government evaluate potential national security threats. He said there’s also the possibility data could identify something that is not human.
“There is a completely different mindset following President Trump’s directive. We are trying to figure it out together, in cooperation, and I hope that all the suspicion against government hiding things will be forgotten once we get to the bottom of this,” he said recently.

Sen. Mark Kelly pushes rare Congressional honor for Artemis II crew
June 25, 2026, 7:36 a.m. MT
key points
Bipartisan bills have been introduced in the House and Senate to award the Artemis II crew a Congressional Gold Medal.
The Artemis II mission was the first crewed flight to the moon in more than 50 years.
If passed, the Artemis II astronauts would be only the second crew to receive the honor after the Apollo 11 crew.
The legislation was introduced by Sen. Mark Kelly, a retired NASA astronaut, and Rep. Don Bacon.
A U.S. senator from Arizona is behind an effort to recognize the Artemis II crew with a Congressional honor rarely awarded to astronauts.
Separate bills were introduced Wednesday, June 24, by Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Arizona, and retiring Nebraska GOP Rep. Don Bacon in both the Senate and House to award the Artemis II crew a Congressional Gold Medal.
The bipartisan legislation comes more than two months after the four astronauts returned from the first crewed moon mission in more than half a century.
The bills would first have to pass through Congress and be signed into law by President Donald Trump.
If that were to happen, the Artemis II astronauts would become just the second ever crew to receive a Congressional Gold Medal after the honor was bestowed on the Apollo 11 crew in 2009 – 40 years after that historic mission.
The USA TODAY Network – of which the Arizona Republic is a part – was the first to report the story.
Here's everything to know about the Congressional Gold Medal, and why some lawmakers think the Artemis II astronauts are deserving of the honor amid NASA's drive to return humans to the moon.
Lawmakers seek to award Congressional Gold Medal to Artemis II crew
Kelly and Bacon introduced the legislation more than two months after NASA's Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and the Canadian Space Agency's Jeremy Hansen returned from the landmark Artemis II spaceflight.
To date, the only other time astronauts were awarded the medal was in 2009 when Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins received the honor for their part in the historic Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.
Who is Mark Kelly? Former astronaut went to space 4 times
Kelly, a retired NASA astronaut, attended the April launch from Florida of the historic crewed spaceflight around the moon.
Prior to his career as a public servant, Kelly, 61, was a Navy fighter pilot who saw combat and also a NASA astronaut who piloted – and even commanded – four NASA space shuttle missions between 2001 and 2011.
During his astronaut career, Kelly spent a total of 50 days in space and traveled more than 20 million miles, according to his senate biography.
Kelly ultimately retired from both the Navy and NASA in 2011 – the same year that his wife, Gabby Giffords, a former Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, was shot and nearly killed in an attempted assassination.
He was first elected in 2020 as a U.S. senator. Mark Kelly's twin brother Scott Kelly was also a NASA astronaut.
1/2
Kelly, Bacon, praise NASA's Artemis II astronauts
While it's rare for astronauts to be nominated for a Congressional Gold Medal, Kelly and Bacon said in statements first provided to the USA TODAY Network that the historical significance of the Artemis II mission made the crew worthy of the honor.
“Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy carried human space exploration farther than it has ever gone before,” Kelly, who is also considering a 2028 run for president, said in a statement.
"They reminded Americans what we're capable of when we work together … For pushing the boundaries of human achievement, the Artemis II crew deserves this honor.”
Bacon praised the "extraordinary astronauts" in his statement, saying the mission carried on the iconic Apollo program's legacy in space exploration.
The astronauts, Bacon said, "carried that legacy farther than any humans have ever traveled from Earth."
What is a Congressional Gold Medal?
The Congressional Gold Medal is the oldest and one of the highest civilian honors awarded by Congress. The medal was first awarded in 1776 to George Washington during the American Revolution.
Since then Congress has broadened the recognition to include civilians and groups who have made a "long-standing impact on American history and culture," according to the Smithsonian.
What was the Artemis II mission?
The second mission under NASA's multibillion-dollar Artemis program, Artemis II marked the first time humans flew near the moon in more than 50 years.
The four astronauts rode in NASA's Orion spacecraft, which hitched a ride to space atop NASA's powerful 322-foot Space Launch System rocket during an April 1 launch from the Kennedy Space Center.
During the 10-day spaceflight, the Orion vehicle carried the astronauts around the moon and back to Earth without landing on the lunar surface.
Along the way, Wiseman, Glover, Koch and Hansen surpassed a record set during the infamous Apollo 13 mission in 1970 – traveling a historic 252,756 miles from Earth.
They also bore witness to sights of the moon's far side never before seen by human eyes while traveling as close as 4,067 miles above the surface during a lunar flyby.
Splashing down April 10 in the Pacific Ocean near California, the mission ultimately served as a successful test flight ensuring that both the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft operated as expected during a crewed mission.
Upcoming Artemis III to precede moon landing
NASA is already making preparations for the next mission under the lunar campaign, the ultimate objective of which is to send humans back to the moon and construct a $20 billion moon base where astronauts can live and work.
Due for 2027, Artemis III aims to send a new crew of astronauts – NASA's Randy Bresnik, Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio, as well as the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano – on an Orion vehicle to Earth orbit, where they will spend two weeks testing spacesuits and docking capabilities with two commercial lunar landers.
Those landers are Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander, and SpaceX's Starship HLS (human landing system).
The mission is a complex one involving three separate rocket launches – NASA's SLS, Blue Origin's New Glenn and SpaceX's Starship – to get all three spacecraft to orbit.
A successful test mission would set the stage for the first human moon landing under the program during Artemis IV. Targeted for 2028, the mission would be the first time humans set foot on the moon since NASA's iconic Apollo era ended in 1972.
NASA views the moon program as a vital stepping stone to eventually send the first crewed expeditions to Mars – and it all largely began with Artemis II.

NASA’s TESS Mission Reveals the “Puffiest” Planets Ever Found
Jun 24, 2026
Data from NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) mission has revealed two new “super-puff” planets, giant worlds so light that their density is comparable to cotton candy.
Scientists calculate that these Jupiter-sized planets—named TOI-791 b and TOI-791 c—are the “puffiest” worlds ever found.
The planets orbit a Sun-like star named TOI-791 that is approximately 1,113 light years away from Earth.
The TESS mission first detected the planets by watching for repeated dips in TOI-791’s brightness, a telltale sign that a planet is transiting, or passing in front of, a star. Further study revealed two large planets with unusual features.
TOI-791 b is nearly the same size as Jupiter but contains just 3.0 percent of Jupiter’s mass. TOI-791 c is even larger than Jupiter but contains just 5.9 percent of Jupiter’s mass.
“The main reason these planets are interesting to study is that we didn’t expect to see them at all,” said Jon Jenkins, the science lead for the Science Processing Operations Center at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, which provided the science-ready data from TESS analyzed in this study.
“They represent a puzzle for us to solve about how giant planets like Jupiter and the super-puffs form.”
The newly found super-puffs also have unusually long orbits, with TOI‑791 b taking 139 days and TOI‑791 c taking 232 days to circle the host star. Such long-orbit planets are rare to find, needing long durations of telescope observation to capture and confirm their attributes.
From its vantage point in high Earth orbit, TESS was able to gather 1,122 days of data on this planetary system over the course of seven years, giving the research team a wealth of data about the planetary system.
Further analysis found that TOI-791 b and TOI-791 c are locked in an orbital pattern that allows them to tug on each other gravitationally.
As they orbit their host star, the planets alternate pulling on each other, affecting the timing of their transits across the host star. Scientists used that variation in orbital timing to calculate the planets’ masses, cementing their status as low density super-puffs.
“Only a handful of these super-puffy planets are known, and it is even rarer to find two in the same system,” said lead author George Dansfield of Oxford University’s Department of Physics in Oxford, England.
“Their extremely low densities make them fascinating targets for understanding how planetary systems form and evolve.”
With further study, the super-puffs may have more to tell us about planetary evolution.
“Large planet formation is believed to drive the evolution of a planetary system, so further study of these Jupiter-size, but far less than Jupiter-mass, planets is of high value,” said Steve Howell, a NASA Ames research scientist who was involved in this study.
Scientists hope to learn more about the chemical makeup of the planets’ atmospheres, how their spin affects their shape, and how the tilt of their host star compares to their orbits.
Deeper investigation could provide new insight into how TOI-791 b and TOI-791 c migrated through the planetary system during their development, whether their orbits were shaped by interactions with other planets, and how low-density super-puff planets form.

@NASAAdmin
We are doing things differently now. NASA cannot take years longer than expected and spend billions more than planned when the world is waiting for the headlines only NASA can deliver.
The programs covered in the report will free up more than $3 billion in the years ahead for more missions of science and discovery.
The small pilot program we implemented to rebuild core competencies has already resulted in nearly $200 million a year in savings.
That means more Moon Base missions, more astronauts in space, more telescopes, more nuclear spaceships and more x-planes.

Governor Newsom welcomes first public preview of California Science Center’s new Air and Space Center ahead of November opening
Jun 24, 2026
What you need to know: California’s sustained investments in science, education, and innovation are coming to life at Exposition Park.
The new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will feature the first and only space shuttle displayed in a full launch, takeoff-ready position on Earth.
The Center will transform an already beloved, free museum for millions of kids and families into a global destination that highlights California’s aerospace and space legacy.
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today welcomed the first public viewing of the new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center in state-owned Exposition Park, ahead of the Center’s forthcoming public opening this November.
The major new addition to one of California’s most visited family and science destinations will celebrate the state’s legacy of aviation and space leadership while inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers.
California has always been a place of discovery — from the early pioneers of flight to the engineers, astronauts, scientists, and innovators who helped shape the space age and who are powering the next era of exploration today.
The new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center reflects our state’s enduring commitment to science, education, and innovation, and it will inspire curiosity and learning for generations to come.
On behalf of the people of California, I thank everyone who worked so hard to make this world-class Air and Space Center a reality, including the philanthropic partners whose support helped bring this extraordinary vision to completion.
Governor Gavin Newsom
The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will open its doors to millions of children and families — free of charge — and serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come.
This incredible space, in the heart of Los Angeles at Exposition Park, will foster community, connection, and cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, innovators, and explorers.
By making science more accessible and engaging for all, the Center is a clear investment in our children’s futures.
Construction of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center building was completed through a public-private partnership with investments from the Newsom administration and the Legislature.
The facility adds roughly 200,000 square feet to the California Science Center and provides a permanent home for the Space Shuttle Endeavour in a vertical launch configuration with its external tank and twin solid rocket boosters.
The installation has been described as the world’s first and only authentic display of a space shuttle in launch position, giving Californians and visitors from across the globe an unprecedented opportunity to experience one of the nation’s most iconic aerospace achievements.
1/3
“This expansion of our California Science Center is truly world-class,” said California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot.
“It offers an unparallelled experience of discovery and wonder, and will inspire generations of young people to reach for the stars—quite literally!
It builds on California’s legacy of leadership in space exploration and is a tremendous gift to Los Angeles, our state and our entire country. I can’t wait for it to open to the public and welcome more visitors into Exposition Park.”
How we got here
Exposition Park welcomed thousands with the FIFA 2026 Summer World Cup and will open its doors to millions more with the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the planned openings of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art and the Endeavor Space Shuttle at the California Science Center.
Thanks to increased funding made available by the Newsom administration in partnership with the Legislature, Exposition Park will continue its transformation into a premier global destination.
Brief history of Endeavour Space Shuttle
The Endeavour, the last space shuttle built, completed 25 missions.
First launched in 1992, Endeavour made several historic flights to build the International Space Station (ISS), serviced the Hubble Space Telescope, and contributed to vital Earth and space science research.
After its final mission in 2011, NASA selected the California Science Center as the permanent home for the space shuttle to highlight California’s rich aerospace history.
Every NASA space shuttle, including Endeavour, was manufactured and assembled in Southern California. Endeavour leaves an incredible legacy in space exploration, which it now shares with the world at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.
Investments into the aerospace and defense sector
Within Governor Newsom’s California Jobs First Economic Blueprint, the first statewide economic development strategy in more than 20 years, aerospace and defense is an “accelerate” sector — one where additional investments from the public and private sectors have the capacity to “bend the curve” to catalyze sustained growth, contributing an estimated $35 billion annually to California’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Accordingly, the state has made a number of targeted investments into the sector over the past year, including:
Regional Investment Initiative
Last August, the state awarded $16.95 million to two projects designed to provide ecosystem support and uplift the aerospace and defense sector’s infrastructure and workforce in the Central Coast.
CalCompetes Tax Credit Program
In the latest round of awards, announced June 22, Vast received an award to expand its space station research, development, and manufacturing footprint in Long Beach, investing $87 million and creating 657 new jobs.
2/3
In May of this year, the following aerospace and defense companies received awards:
Mach Industries, resulting in a $32.5 million investment to expand its defense technology manufacturing and research and development in Huntington Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco, creating 1,057 jobs.
Apex Space, resulting in a $165.5 million investment to expand its satellite manufacturing presence in Los Angeles and the broader Southern California region, creating 483 jobs.
Voyager Technologies, resulting in a $75 million investment to expand its Long Beach aerospace component manufacturing facility, creating 152 jobs.
Lanteris Space, resulting in a $16 million investment and the creation of 70 jobs to expand its satellite manufacturing facility in San Jose.
Last June, A.S. Aerospace received an award, resulting in a $19 million investment to continue manufacturing precision aerospace hardware in Palmdale and Santa Clarita.
Last November, Hadrian Automation, Inc. was a beneficiary, creating 650 jobs and investing $52 million in Torrance and Northern California to expand its aerospace component manufacturing.
True Anomaly also received an award to expand its satellite manufacturing facilities in Long Beach, resulting in a $12.7 million investment and creating 400 jobs.
NASA Centers in California
In the Golden State, NASA has three main centers and facilities focused on research, flight, and robotic exploration that all contribute to the state’s economic competitiveness, create high-paying jobs, and inspire the next generation of explorers.
Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley has led NASA in conducting world-class research and development in aeronautics, technology, and science since 1939.
Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in Edwards is NASA’s primary center for high-risk, atmospheric flight research and test projects.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena leads in robotic space exploration, sending rovers to Mars, probes to the farthest bounds of the solar system, and satellites to advance understanding of our planet.
JPL manages the Deep Space Network, which is an international array of giant radio antennas, as well as a major center for quantum research at the Quantum Space Innovation Center (QSIC).
Generations of aerospace and defense leadership
California’s role in powering human spaceflight stretches back decades. The Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo astronauts to the moon was built almost entirely in California and the original Apollo spacecraft itself was manufactured across the state.
The Space Shuttle fleet was assembled in Palmdale; the first U.S. space station, Skylab, was built in Huntington Beach; and the RS-25 engine, originally developed for the Shuttle and now powering the Space Launch System for Artemis II, has been designed and manufactured in the San Fernando Valley since the 1970s.
As of late 2024, California is the top state in the country for:
NASA spending: NASA procurement spending at $5.8 billion, accounting for 25% of NASA’s total procurement nationwide and resulting in $18.6 billion in economic output for California.
NASA-supported R&D: California’s share of NASA procurement in the R&D services sector is 67%, representing 19% of NASA-supported jobs in the state.
NASA employment impact: Each NASA job in California supports an additional 35.7 jobs across the state, resulting in a total employment impact of 66,208 jobs.

Chinese AI Agents Could Challenge Air and Space Operations, Planning
June 24, 2026
Current and near-term Chinese artificial intelligence capabilities could counter or replicate how the U.S. military plans and conducts operations, especially complex strike packages such as those seen recently in Iran, according to a new think tank report.
Daniel Remler, a senior fellow with the Center for a New American Security, took a broad look at China’s advanced AI systems and their impact on national security in his new report, titled “Red Lines: Understanding the National Security Risks of China’s Advanced AI.”
More specifically, though, his findings on the Chinese military AI and cyber capabilities reveal potential impacts on the Air Force and Space Force.
Remler argues that while the current status of Chinese AI development can’t be fully assessed using unclassified means, a number of unclassified sources do give some important clues of how the People’s Liberation Army is starting to use AI.
For instance, there are some reports that the Chinese are experimenting with using intelligence streams to build target packages, track logistics and assess battle damage, according to the report—not unlike how the U.S. military used the the agentic AI model Claude, made by Anthropic, to help identify targets during the early hours of Operation Epic Fury, according to multiple media reports.
China’s growing interest in such tools shows how critical they could be in any competition or conflict to come, Dr. Brendan Mulvaney, director of the China Aerospace Studies Institute and a retired Marine aviator, wrote in an email response to Air & Space Forces Magazine.
“The report is a stark reminder that China views the strategic competition as a technological one at its core,” Mulvaney said.
The Effects
If the People’s Liberation Army is able to achieve near-peer or peer-level AI tools for warfighting, that could spell trouble for how the U.S. conducts its own operations.
“The scenario of a peer-level military AI capability between the United States and China would fundamentally alter our operational planning for any air campaign or joint operation,” Mulvaney wrote.
In his report, Remler noted a wide variety of ways the Chinese could use AI:
Automated Cyber Campaigns: Using AI to more quickly build and conduct offensive cyber attacks
Faster targeting and C2: Chinese agentic AI is good for analysis tasks, which includes prioritizing target packages, tracking logistics and distilling intelligence streams.
Swarming: Beihang University, a PLA research partner, has filed patents using agentic AI to improve drown swarm decision-making.
PLA procurement data analyzed shows advanced AI system adoption by Chinese government-controlled entities, according to the CNAS report.
For the U.S., increased Chinese use of AI tools presents challenges and opportunities.
Some Chinese AI models, such as DeepSeek, have shown higher levels of building code that has security vulnerabilities—software backdoors that U.S. forces could exploit.
And current AI systems don’t perform well in a sensor-degraded environment, such as the combat areas.
1/2
But improvements in the Chinese systems’ ability to reduce memory footprints and power consumption could allow is likely to allow them to achieve better computing at the edge, according to the report.
If they can develop agentic AI models that can be hosted locally, U.S. defenders cannot disable them by attacking the model on which they are based or track their outputs as easily.
Getting AI at the tactical edge would allow the PLA to deploy “truly intelligent autonomous systems” such as drones, mobile command posts, and uncrewed aircraft, Mulvaney said.
Adding large language model AI to military platforms might also allow the platform to understand commander’s intent which could help with task-oriented machine learning, retired Navy Cmdr. J. Michael Dahm, senior resident fellow for aerospace and China studies at AFA’s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
Though Dahm added that he doubts that LLM AI will be capable of complex reasoning in the near future.
Still, as the PLA develops its AI prowess, it may not need to achieve parity with U.S. artificial intelligence tools to be effective in military operations, Dahm wrote in an email.
“In a PLA attack on Taiwan or another neighbor, the PLA would essentially enjoy the same advantages that the U.S. enjoyed against Iran—years of planning and intelligence collection that would allow the PLA to rapidly attack hundreds, if not thousands of preplanned targets elected for particular operational and strategic objectives,” Dahm wrote in an email.
Mulvaney also noted the advantage China would enjoy if the United States is fighting far from home with expeditionary capabilities as compared to China’s home field advantage with hardened, secure, quantum-encrypted, fiber optic networks.
“A key vulnerability for the U.S., and really everyone, in modern warfare is the reliance on communication networks,” Mulvaney wrote.
A concern for Mulvaney is whether the PLA will be able to beat the United States in getting advanced AI-enabled platforms and tools to the battlefield first.
“The first force to integrate these systems, to develop the tactics, techniques and procedures for human-AI teaming will have a head start in training their personnel to fight this way, creating a difficult to overcome experience gap” Mulvaney wrote.
“We would be fighting their war, not ours.”
The Battlefield Is Everywhere
Though a potential conflict in the Pacific gets headlines, increasing AI-fueled cyber attacks could strike the United States infrastructure, disrupting military operations abroad, according to the report.
Mulvaney said that offensive cyber campaigns are an immediate threat and the prospect of fully automated cyberattacks that the report notes appear to be a PLA aim, means that an AI-run attack could happen at machine speed and overwhelm cyber defenders, degrading or disabling crucial military systems.
Dahm sees the risk but balances the concern with current examples.
“While AI-enabled PLA offensive cyber campaigns are certainly a growing threat, one should keep in mind that fully automated cyber attacks are currently being met with fully automated, AI-enabled cyber defenses,” Dahm wrote.
“AI-enabled systems are already detecting and countering malicious intrusions and malware across USAF/USSF systems.”
Still, Dahm and Remler both point out the proliferation of such Chinese AI models could let more bad actors access to AI tools for potential attacks against the U.S. military.

European Flight Ticket Initiative opens to more launch service providers
25/06/2026
In brief
The Flight Ticket Initiative is opening up to more European launch service providers to join, offering new opportunities to participate in upcoming missions.
European launch service providers can also bid for the launch of a new batch of In-orbit Demonstration and Validation (IOD/IOV) missions.
Led jointly by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission, the Initiative promotes European launch service solutions through open and competitive calls.
In-depth
The European Space Agency and the European Commission are inviting launch service providers across Europe to apply to join the European Flight Ticket Initiative.
The objective of the Flight Ticket Initiative is to strengthen Europe’s access to space. European launch service providers compete to deliver missions for In-orbit Demonstration and Validation satellite (IOD/IOV) which test new space technologies in orbit.
To support this, ESA launched a new two-part call for proposals.
Framework for future launches
To participate in the Flight Ticket Initiative, a launch service operator must first be awarded a framework contract. This allows them to compete for future missions under the Initiative.
Avio, Isar Aerospace, PLD Space, and Rocket Factory Augsburg hold such contracts with ESA, following a first selection in 2024.
ESA and the European Commission are now expanding this pool by inviting additional European providers to apply. Companies that expect to be ready to launch before 2028 are encouraged to take part.
A second part of the call focuses on assigning launch opportunities for the fifth batch of In-Orbit Demonstration and Validation satellite missions.
Six missions, shortlisted in a previous call, are now ready for launch. Both existing providers and newly selected companies will be able to submit bids.
The flight tickets will be assigned to European launch services and are funded through the EU Horizon Europe programme and ESA’s ‘Boost!’ programme.
“The IOD/IOV programme, a joint initiative of the European Commission and ESA, has reached a stage where extending the Flight Ticket initiative to new launch service providers is both timely and beneficial.
We expect this opportunity to attract companies developing launch capabilities in Europe, creating more flight opportunities for in-orbit demonstration and validation.
This will support innovation, strengthen the European space ecosystem, and ultimately benefit EU citizens,” said Catherine Kavvada, Director at the European Commission.
“In addition to enhancing competition in the European market, the Flight Ticket Initiative is a showcase collaboration whereby the European Commission and ESA join forces to ensure autonomous and sustainable European access to space,” says Andrea Tullj, ESA launch service manager, “By relying on both established and new space actors and providing them with IOD/IOV missions the Initiative is opening the market and providing opportunities for launch service providers.”
Launch service providers are invited to submit their offers by 17 July 2026 at 13:00 CEST via https://esastar-publication.sso.esa.int/ESATenderActions/details/185685

Von der Leyen investigated over secret group chat with Zelensky – media
24 Jun, 2026 22:21 | Updated 25 Jun, 2026 05:46
An EU watchdog is investigating European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over a secret group chat involving Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and several other European leaders, according to Dutch outlet Follow the Money (FTM).
The probe follows a complaint by FTM after the European Commission refused to release messages from a private group chat that reportedly included German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The commission reportedly argued that disclosure could harm the EU’s relations with third countries.
In a letter sent to the commission last week and cited by the outlet on Wednesday, European Ombudsman Teresa Anjinho reportedly said she had opened an inquiry into the refusal to grant access to the communications.
Anjinho said the probe would examine whether the commission complied with EU transparency rules when it rejected the request. She has also asked to meet commission representatives by mid-July, FTM reported.
The group chat, dubbed the ‘Washington Group’, was first reported on by Politico in January.
Citing people familiar with the matter, Politico wrote at the time that participants had spent the previous year exchanging messages whenever US President Donald Trump did what they viewed as “something wild and potentially damaging.”
According to media reports, the group was originally set up in response to the Ukraine conflict.
The reported inquiry is the latest in a series of controversies involving von der Leyen and the commission’s handling of official records.
Last year, the EU’s General Court ruled that the commission had improperly handled a request by the New York Times seeking access to text messages exchanged between von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during negotiations over the bloc’s Covid-19 vaccine contracts.
The commission later pledged to review its record-keeping practices.
Earlier this month, Anjinho criticized the deletion of a text message sent by Macron regarding the EU’s proposed trade agreement with South America’s Mercosur bloc.
The commission declined to release the message in response to a freedom of information request, saying it had been auto-deleted.
Following a complaint by FTM, the ombudsman concluded that the message had been deleted unlawfully and called on the commission to improve the preservation and archiving of official communications, including texts.

A depot supplying two Russian regions with fuel is burning after an overnight drone strike
25/06/2026
Ukrainian drones set a fuel depot ablaze in southern Russia's Krasnodar Krai overnight, the latest blow in Kyiv's campaign against the supply lines behind Moscow's war, according to Russian regional officials and Ukrainian monitors.
Russian authorities blamed falling drone debris, while Ukrainian and Russian channels say the site was struck directly. The same night, drones also reached occupied Crimea and the approaches to Moscow.
Ukraine's deep-strike campaign has turned Russia's fuel system into a front of its own, with rationing now spreading across the country and occupied territories.
Every hit on a refinery, depot, or pipeline chips at the revenue and the logistics that keep the invasion running. With southern Russia's pumps already dry and central refineries offline, each new strike widens the gap between what the country produces and what it burns.
Ukraine's deep strikes cost Russia more than $1 billion in May alone, and the pressure on fuel—and on occupied Crimea—is mounting toward what Kyiv frames as leverage to end the war.
What burned
The target was the Poltavskaya oil depot in the Krasnoarmeysky district, the Krasnodar Krai operational headquarters stated.
Officials there once again claimed falling drone debris sparked the blaze—Moscow's standard phrasing for hits on its energy sites.
Residents filmed three large fires and thick black smoke, footage the Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ posted.
The depot is not a refinery. It takes in fuel from regional plants and feeds filling stations across part of Krasnodar Krai and the neighboring Republic of Adygea.
Russian channel Astra counts about 28 storage tanks at the site. The depot sits roughly 80 km west of Krasnodar and about 385 km from the front. District head Aleksandr Kharitonov stated that a road linking Poltavskaya to the hamlet of Trudobelikovsky was closed.
Fire at Russian oil depot in Krasnodar Krai
According to local reports, two fuel tanks are ablaze in Poltavskaya rural settlement. The facility was previously struck on 16 June.
A hub in a region already dry
Ukraine has hit the Poltavskaya depot before.
Drones struck it on 16 June, setting off a major fire, and the site feeds networks that began running dry in early June, when Krasnodar followed occupied Crimea into shortage.
By Astra's count, the overnight raid was the third on the depot this month.
A wider night of strikes
The depot was one target among several. Ukrainian drones hit occupied Crimea again, targeting power infrastructure. Near Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed air defenses downed two drones heading for the capital.
The fuel crisis behind the strikes
The strikes land on an oil sector already under strain. Ukrainian drones have idled refineries across central Russia, and gasoline output now covers only about 80% of domestic demand, Reuters reported.
Authorities in 25 Russian regions have restricted fuel sales, from the European part of the country to Siberia.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tied the campaign to ending the war.
He said Ukraine's operation against occupied Crimea is clearly worked out, and that if Kyiv gets what was discussed at the G7, it can push Russia toward peace.

CENTCOM chief Cooper to visit Zamir as Lebanon ceasefire, withdrawal terms in play
For months in late 2024, the IDF complained that the Lebanese army was afraid of Hezbollah and not nearly aggressive enough in handling issues and complaints.
CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper will be visiting Israel to meet with IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir in the coming days, though the exact date is still not public. Due to security concerns, the IDF and the US military often publicize Cooper’s visits to Israel only after they occur.
They will be meeting as Israel and the US meet in one context, and Iran, Pakistan, Qatar, Lebanon, and the US, led by other diplomatic envoys, will meet in another context, negotiating over the terms of the Lebanon ceasefire, as well as the IDF’s withdrawal from parts of southern Lebanon.
Israeli officials are likely to try to use the opportunity to draft Cooper to help them make their case before other top US officials.

Philippines deploys US-made Triton naval drones in its western waters to scout for intruders
Jun 25, 2026, 07:32 AM
The Philippine Navy is set to deploy four Triton autonomous underwater and surface drones as part of ongoing efforts to protect subsea cables and monitor incursions by Chinese vessels and maritime militia in disputed features within the West Philippine Sea.
The U.S. Embassy in the Philippines announced this week the transfer of the AUSVs worth 754 million pesos ($13 million) and produced by American firm Ocean Aero to the sea forces to enhance capabilities “to detect and respond to maritime challenges and illegal maritime activities.”
The transfer comes after the Armed Forces of the Philippines revealed that China discreetly deployed a 6x6 meter floating platform equipped with an antenna in late May at the southeastern portion of Scarborough Shoal, a fishing lagoon within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
Philippine officials claim the platform was being used to illegally gather Philippine maritime data and could serve as a prelude for China’s island-building activities.
Philippine officials lodged diplomatic protests, and China removed the structure last week.
Solar-powered Tritons are capable of autonomous navigation both on the surface and underwater and can support a diverse array of missions such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), anti-submarine warfare, maritime strike, and mine countermeasures.
The drones can be fitted with video cameras, thermal imaging and sonars, and may be deployed from shore, vessels, or aircraft. It can dive down to 100 meters and remain underwater for 10 days. It can also conduct surface patrols for up to 30 days.
In Ocean Aero’s headquarters in Gulfport, Mississippi, the AUSVs are mobilized to protect subsea cables from sabotage, and the company has pitched the AUSVs for U.S. Navy mine-clearing in the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials told Defense News the AUSVs were shown to the Navy during the recent iteration of Exercise Balikatan and are among a series of systems and platforms the U.S. had planned to transfer to the Philippines to boost military capabilities.
The Tritons will also boost existing efforts to monitor subsea cables and gas pipelines, officials said.
“The ability to monitor and respond to maritime challenges — illegal fishing, gray zone activities, and threats to freedom of navigation — requires persistent, long-endurance awareness that no single ship or aircraft can provide alone.
The Triton fills that gap by expanding the capabilities of the Philippine Navy into critical waterways,” U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Bridgette Walker said in a statement.
The drones are included in the Philippines-U.S. Security Sector Assistance Roadmap, a multi-year agreement to ease the acquisition, transfer, and sharing of equipment like radars and unmanned systems to strengthen maritime surveillance.
Last December, the U.S. Senate earmarked $2.5 billion for Philippine military modernization to be disbursed from 2026 to 2030.

SCOT AWAY WITH IT Humanity breathes sigh of relief as aliens do NOT show for mass abduction during Scotland’s World Cup clash vs Brazil
01:05, 25 Jun 2026 Updated: 01:15, 25 Jun 2026
HUMANITY can breathe a sigh of relief as Aliens did NOT show up to a mass abduction during Scotland’s World Cup game against Brazil.
The Scots had the daunting task of taking on the five-time winners in Miami in their third and final group stage match.
But there was a far more frightening prospect at stake after a whacky conspiracy theorist predicted that there would be an alien invasion during the match.
Spiritualist Anatercia da Silva Goncalves, known to her followers as Vo Bahiana, made the nonsense claim on social media.
She said in a tearful video: “Guys, I have to tell you that I dreamed again about aliens invading the soccer field in Miami.
“And I clearly saw the players being carried off by the first ship that arrived. I was inside that ship.
“When the ship rose, the mothership arrived, a much larger ship, and took in thousands of people from the soccer field.
“I saw so much screaming, so much crying, so many tears, suffering. I have to tell you that I am very terrified because, well, it is the second time I am dreaming about this.
“And they are saying that on the 24th, something very bad is about to happen at this game, at this soccer field in Miami, in the United States.”
Surprisingly, Vo Bahiana’s prediction did not prove true – but Scotland might have wished for one as they put in equally catastrophic performance.
A double from Brazil star Vinicius Jr and second-half Matheus Cunha goal condemned Scotland to a 3-0 loss and leaves them sweating on qualification.
The eight best third-placed teams progress to the last 32 based on a ranking. That is determined by points, goal difference, goals scored, fair-play status and Fifa ranking.
Meanwhile Neymar – undeterred by the threat of alien abduction – made his first appearance of the tournament coming on with 15 minutes to go.
One fan said: “Neymar is fit? More shocking than the scheduled alien abduction.”
Another added: “NEYMAR SURVIVED THE ALIEN ABDUCTION.”
The Hard Rock Stadium themselves posted: “Can confirm that there are no signs of aliens here.”
