‘Ukrainian oligarch’ injured in backpack bomb blast in Monaco – media

At least three people were injured in what authorities described as an intentional “attack”

An explosive device packed with shrapnel seriously injured Ukrainian-born businessman Vadim Ermolaev and two members of his family at the entrance to a residential building in Monaco on Monday evening, according to local media reports.

The explosion occurred shortly before 9pm on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, a street in the principality near the French border. Investigators believe the device had been hidden in a backpack left near the entrance to the building. Monaco’s Minister of State Christophe Mirmand told AFP that the device likely contained bolts and shot, and indicated that authorities were treating the blast as a likely terrorist attack.

Authorities have yet to officially confirm the victims’ identities, but sources close to the investigation told BFMTV that they were the family of “major Ukrainian oligarch” Vadim Ermolaev, a businessman born in Dnepropetrovsk in 1968. Before he was stripped of Ukrainian citizenship in 2023, Forbes ranked him 35th among the country’s 100 richest men.

A suspect was allegedly caught on CCTV leaving the backpack near the entrance just as several people were entering the building, before fleeing on foot toward Beausoleil, a French commune bordering Monaco. A manhunt was launched after the blast, with the suspect still at large.

The explosion was powerful enough to be heard several blocks away. Monaco authorities also activated the “red plan,” an emergency response protocol used in the event of a sudden incident causing multiple casualties.

“This is the first time in history, to my knowledge, that such an act has occurred in the Principality,” Mirmand said. Eric Ciotti, the mayor of neighboring Nice, described the incident as an “attack.”

“The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that strikes Monaco,” Ciotti wrote in a post on X. “Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilized.”

DOJ Sues States Over Alleged Failure To Turn Over Food Stamp Data

The Trump administration has sued four states, accusing them of withholding crucial data on food stamp applicants.

Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania refused to turn over information to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that would let federal officials identify fraud, Trump administration lawyers said in lawsuits filed on June 26 against the states.

Officials are asking judges to enter injunctions that would force state authorities to hand over the last five years of applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the food stamp program known as SNAP.

The USDA requested the SNAP data in 2025, citing an executive order from President Donald Trump that directed agencies to stop waste, fraud, and abuse, and many states complied with the request.

Data from those states showed that states had enrolled some 186,000 people in SNAP despite those people being deceased, among the discrepancies that added up to $3 billion in wasteful spending, the department said in a report.

The government spends nearly $100 billion a year on SNAP.

Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania are among the states that did not comply with the request, which suggests fraud and abuse are likely going undetected, the filings say.

“The American people deserve a government that is transparent about how it spends their hard-earned tax dollars,” acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement.

“These four states are thwarting USDA’s efforts to ensure that the billions of dollars in SNAP benefits they distribute every year are not lost to fraud. It’s unacceptable, suspicious, and it will not stand under this Administration.”

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said she asked that the lawsuits be filed.

“If a State misguidedly stands between the federal government and the information needed to protect the generosity of the American taxpayer, the Trump Administration will take them to court,” Rollins said.

Defendants Allegedly Bribed NBA Player Co-Defendant to Manipulate His Game Performance in Order to Place Fraudulent Wagers Worth Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars

Earlier today, in federal court in Brooklyn, an indictment was unsealed charging six defendants — former National Basketball Association (NBA) players Malik Beasley and Edward Davis, and co-conspirators William Brown, Robert Gorodetsky, Ernesto Plascencia, and current NBA player agent Paolo Zamorano—with wire fraud conspiracy, bribery in sporting contests, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy for their alleged roles in a scheme to bribe Beasley to manipulate his performance in NBA games and use inside information about Beasley’s intended performance to profit via illegal betting activity. Several of the defendants were arrested today at locations across the country and will be arraigned in the Eastern District of New York at a later date.

Joseph Nocella Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and James C. Barnacle, Jr., Assistant Director in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), announced the arrests and indictment.

“As alleged, the defendants turned professional basketball into a criminal betting operation, bribing then-NBA player Malik Beasley to fix his performance in multiple games in order to place fraudulent wagers, enrich themselves and cheat legitimate sportsbooks,” stated United States Attorney Nocella. “Bribery and insider betting schemes like this one involving former NBA players and a current NBA player agent who exploited inside NBA information for profit erode the integrity of American sports and victimize the sports-watching public. Our Office will continue in its strong tradition of holding accountable anyone who seeks to corrupt sports through illegal means.”

“These defendants allegedly operated an illegal betting ring in an attempt to unlawfully earn hundreds of thousands of dollars. As alleged, Malik Beasley allowed himself to be bought and altered his gametime performance to line pockets of Ed Davis and his other co-conspirators. The FBI continues to dismantle fraudulent schemes that erode the integrity of any institution, including our nation's professional sports leagues,” stated FBI Assistant Director in Charge Barnacle.

As alleged, Beasley, then a player for the Milwaukee Bucks, agreed with his former NBA teammate Davis (known to the other co-defendants as Beasley’s “gatekeeper”) in advance of NBA games that Beasley would underperform, and at times overperform, relative to one or more of his betting statistics in those games. Davis, Brown, Gorodetsky, Plascencia, Zamorano and other co-conspirators subsequently used this non-public information relating to Beasley’s intended performance to place fraudulent wagers conditioned on Beasley’s performance in the games at issue, all with the intention of profiting off the scheme. As further alleged, in return for performance fixing, Beasley received bribes from the co-conspirators, typically by having Beasley’s gambling debts to Davis reduced or paid off.

Former SBS journalist Mary Kostakidis was back in court on Monday, defending herself against racial discrimination claims by the Zionist Federation of Australia.

As the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion began its third hearing block, two of Australia’s highest-profile legal disputes arising from criticism of Israel returned to the Federal Court on Monday.

In separate hearings, the court dealt with interlocutory disputes in proceedings brought by Zionist complainants against veteran journalist and former SBS news presenter Mary Kostakidis and University of Sydney academics Nick Riemer and John Keane.

Battle over WhatsApp messages

Kostakidis is seeking access to communications within a WhatsApp group known as “Lawyers for Israel”, including:

“All documents recording communications sent and received by members of the WhatsApp group called ‘Lawyers for Israel’, in the period 6 December 2023 to 14 July 2024 inclusive, referring or relating to the respondent.”

Her legal team argue that the messages are relevant to the motivations behind Zionist Federation of Australia chief executive Alon Cassuto’s decision to commence racial discrimination proceedings against Kostakidis.

The Zionist Federation opposed the request, arguing the communications were not relevant to the proceedings. The ZFA also broadly opposed Kostakidis’s proposed discovery categories, arguing that compliance would require “approximately 200 hours of work” and impose a substantial burden on the organisation.

In an affidavit filed by its solicitor, the ZFA said it is a “small organisation with limited financial resources”, employing approximately “20 employees and volunteers in Australia and two staff overseas”. It said approximately 90% of its staff had changed since 2024.

Doxxing concerns

At the same time, Cassuto is seeking discovery of Kostakidis’s own communications concerning the case, including:

“All documents recording any communications to or from the Applicant in the period 4 January 2024 to 14 July 2024 inclusive, referring or relating to the respondent (including communications referring or relating to posts by her on the social media platform X).”

Counsel for Kostakidis, Sheryn Omeri KC, argued that the identities of third parties contained in the documents should be redacted.

“It’s a matter for Mr Cassuto to justify. Why does he need the names of third parties?” Omeri told the court, adding any confidentiality arrangements should operate reciprocally.

“The confidentiality protocol would apply both ways. So, for example, if an order were made for discovery of the Lawyers for Israel WhatsApp chat messages referring to Ms Kostakidis, in the first instance, the names and mobile phone numbers … we would expect them to come to us redacted.”

Omeri told the court that disclosure of names could expose third parties to adverse consequences.

An affidavit filed by Kostakidis’s solicitor, Jack Vaughan, states:

“The respondent is concerned about the exposure to the applicant (and thus to the Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) and potentially to other Zionist organisations) of the personal information of persons who have corresponded or been involved with her. She is also concerned that such persons may be at risk from the ZFA or other Zionists or Zionist organisations of ‘lawfare’ (such as she perceives the present claim against her to be) or other harassing behaviour.”
