In Europe, birth in the country alone usually does not give citizenship. Most countries use citizenship by blood/descent; birth on the territory helps only under conditions.No EU country has unconditional U.S.-style birthright citizenship for children of foreign parents.

FranceUsually not citizen at birth; can become French automatically at 18 if resident in France and lived there 5 years since age 11. Earlier declaration possible from adolescence.

GermanyCitizen at birth if one parent has livedlegallyin Germany 5 years and has permanent residence.

United KingdomCitizen at birth if one parent is British, Irish, settled, or has equivalent permanent status. Otherwise child may register later, often after 10 years’ residence.

Rule of thumb:France, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg and the UK have meaningful conditional birth-in-country pathways; Italy and Spain have narrower/deferred pathways; much of northern, central and eastern Europe relies mostly on parent citizenship plus anti-statelessness exceptions.
