The US always needs to keep in our inventory the A-10s, F15Es, Apaches, and B1 bombers because the give us special capabilities that other planes can't match. I call them the brute force, whereas F35's, F22s, F47s, and B2 variants, give us stealth force. When a conflict starts, it is the stealth force that clears the way in highly contested theaters of operations, but after the enemy blinded and we have air superiority, it is the brute force that quickly brings the house down and at lower operating costs. To decommission the brute force for newer computerized stealth force would be a huge mistake. What would happen is software systems were compromised during a battle, the brute force still has manual modes of operations. In addition, A-10s have proven the right tool to fight slower drones and speed boats weaving inside commercial traffic. A balanced range of capabilities is the key to constant sustained pressure, it is about attributes that can be utilized in an orthogonal use case that gives options.
