Saturn's Iapetus: Painted Moon
What has happened to Saturn's moon Iapetus? Vast sections of this strange world are dark as coal, while others are as bright as snow. To help better understand this unusually tinted moon, in 2007 NASA directed the robotic Cassini spacecraft then orbiting Saturn to swoop within 2,000 kilometers. Pictured here, from about 75,000 kilometers out, is the hemisphere of Iapetus that is always trailing. A large impact crater seen in the south spans 500 kilometers and appears superposed on an older crater of similar size. The dark material is seen increasingly coating the easternmost part of Iapetus, darkening craters and highlands alike. A leading hypothesis is that the dark material is mostly a form of carbon-rich soil leftover from when relatively warm but dirty ice sublimates. An initial coating of this dark material may have been effectively painted on by the accretion of meteor-liberated debris from other moons.

Japan space probe skims asteroid in test for planetary defense

A Japanese space probe performed a flyby of a near-Earth asteroid on Sunday in a test mission for technology that could help protect the planet from space rocks.
The fridge-sized Hayabusa2 was due to fly within 800 meters (0.5 miles) of asteroid Torifune, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) scientists said earlier, a trial run to see whether such a probe could deflect a potentially dangerous space rock away from Earth.
The mission comes after NASA deliberately smashed a spacecraft into the 160-meter-wide (525-foot-wide) Dimorphos asteroid in 2022, successfully altering its orbit around a larger space rock.
Moving at a speed of more than 18,000 kilometers (11,185 miles) per hour, Hayabusa2 was not intended to collide with Torifune.
Instead, scientists wanted to assess whether they could precisely control the trajectory of the probe, should it ever need to perform a deflection.
"At 6:35 p.m. (0935 GMT)… Hayabusa2 conducted a flyby of Torifune and the spacecraft is working normally," a JAXA spokeswoman told AFP, declining to give her name.
Online footage supplied by JAXA showed scientists applauding in a control room.
"I was nervous, I felt on edge the whole time… But I'm really glad we were able to see it through to the end," one of the scientists told the JAXA broadcast.
If it is confirmed that the space probe indeed came within 800 meters of Torifune, the mission would be one of the closest flybys of a near-Earth asteroid ever.
"It's as difficult as trying to shoot through a one-yen coin somewhere within the area stretching from Okinawa to Hokkaido," Yuya Mimasu of JAXA said earlier, referring to Japan's southernmost and northernmost islands.
Bare rock or sand?
Cameras on board Hayabusa2 are also recording data from the asteroid's surface, including geographical features, its texture and temperature—vital information for a potential planetary defense mission.
"Is the surface consisting of bare rock, or cover(ed) by boulder fields or sand beaches? Only images taken by a spacecraft can reveal this information," Patrick Michel, project scientist at the European Space Agency, told AFP before the flyby.
"If we want to deflect an asteroid by an impact, the response is not the same if the asteroid is behaving like a sponge or if it behaves like a very solid material," he said.
The space probe's mission is not based on any actual threat to Earth from an asteroid.
Launched in 2014, Hayabusa2 has already thrilled scientists by landing on and gathering material from the asteroid Ryugu, some 300 million kilometers (185 million miles) from our planet.
Six years later, it returned to Earth precious samples from Ryugu—"dragon palace" in Japanese—providing scientists with clues about what the solar system was like at its birth some 4.6 billion years ago.
After the Torifune mission, the space probe is expected to attempt in 2031 a "rendezvous"—a maneuver in which it flies alongside or touches down on a space rock to gather detailed data—with another asteroid, called 1998KY26.
Even after the success of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), Sunday's ambitious flyby is hugely worthwhile, European Space Agency scientist Michel said.
"Given the diversity of near-Earth asteroids in terms of size, shape, surface and internal properties, each new image makes us better prepared."

Winston Scott to Newsmax: Trump Revitalized US Space Leadership

The Trump administration's support for NASA shows that it "sees the value of space" travel, former astronaut Winston Scott told Newsmax on Sunday.
Appearing on "Sunday Report" with co-hosts Bill Spadea and Krysia Lenzo, Scott praised President Donald Trump for spotlighting NASA's Artemis II astronauts during Saturday night's Independence Day celebration, saying the administration has restored momentum to America's space program.
"It was only a few years ago when we were beginning to languish in space," Scott said. "But we have an administration in place now … that really sees the value of space and really supporting it."
Scott pointed to the upcoming Artemis II mission, NASA's planned lunar base, and future missions to Mars as evidence the United States is reclaiming its leadership in space exploration.
He also noted the rapid pace of launches from Florida's Space Coast.
"At Kennedy Space Center last year, we launched over 100 space launches," Scott said. "There are so many things going on in space that are testament to the leadership of America in space. I hope we never relinquish that leadership."
The Trump administration has made returning Americans to the moon and eventually sending astronauts to Mars a major priority while relying heavily on partnerships with private companies, including SpaceX, to accelerate development.
Joining Scott on the program, former NASA rocket scientist and author Olympia LePoint said a human mission to Mars remains achievable but will require significant technological breakthroughs.
"The reason why there's a push for people to go to Mars today is to develop the science and technology needed to sustain human life on a changing planet," LePoint said.
She explained that scientists must solve several major challenges before astronauts can safely make the nine- to 10-month journey to the Red Planet.
Among them are developing systems to recycle air and water, creating advanced nuclear-based propulsion capable of supporting long-duration missions, and protecting astronauts from dangerous cosmic radiation.
"Cosmic radiation can cut through a rocket and it can cut through human DNA," LePoint said. "Humans are affected from that."
LePoint argued that the research required for deep-space exploration will produce technologies that also improve life on Earth.
"The science and innovation is going to take a team of people to create the solutions, not only to go to Mars, but to take it back and bring those solutions here back on Earth," she said.
NASA is preparing Artemis II, expected to become the first crewed mission to orbit the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
The mission is designed to pave the way for Artemis III, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface before eventually establishing a sustained human presence there.
Scott said continued American leadership in space is critical not only for scientific advancement but also for maintaining the nation's technological and strategic edge, calling space exploration one of the country's greatest strengths.

Mysterious ‘space balls’ force closure of Queensland beach

Images have emerged of a series of mysterious objects – believed to be space junk – that forced the closure of a Queensland beach.
Authorities were called to Forrest Beach about 2.25pm on Friday after “potentially toxic” debris was found washed up on the sand.
Following the discovery, the beach, which sits about 80km north of Townsville, was shut while work was carried out to remove the objects.
It is thought they may have been debris from a crashed satellite, potentially containers for hydrogelic propellant, an eco-friendly fuel commonly used to power the orbiting kit.
On Sunday, Queensland Fire and Rescue shared photographs appearing to show large spheres on the sand, saying the nature of the objects was still under investigation.
“Queensland Fire and Rescue crews are continuing to assist partner agencies following the discovery of several potentially hazardous objects around Forrest Beach in North Queensland,” the Queensland Fire Department wrote.
“Specialist QFR Scientific teams have safely secured a number of the items throughout the weekend and remain on scene continuing their work.
“A 50-metre exclusion zone is still in place.”
Internet sleuths flooded the post with speculation on what the objects could be.
“Possibly a Chinese Long March (CZ-3B or similar) rocket upper stage hydrazine tank, very toxic contents,” one user wrote.
“Hydrazine Propellant Tank,” was another theory.
“Alien activity?” questioned another.
Associate Prof Alice Gorman, a space archaeologist and space junk expert at Flinders University, told the Guardian that the objects – known as space balls – had no evidence of scorching.
“This suggests they might be from a rocket stage – perhaps a first or second stage – that has fallen back to Earth while the rest of the stage goes on to deliver a payload into space,” she said.
“They look to be consistent with what you find as part of a fuel system. They are pressurised fuel vessels made of titanium alloys with a very high melting point.
“They’re actually known as space balls and they can be found years after a launch. It is perhaps not something that anyone would have seen [landing].”
She warned they could contain remaining hydrazine – a highly toxic rocket fuel.
The Australian Space Agency is working to determine the nature and origin of the mysterious objects.
The fire department advised not to touch any suspicious objects that may be seen in the area, and to move away and call triple-0.

SpaceX Starlink Mission

On Sunday, July 5 at 6:50 a.m. ET, Falcon 9 launched 29 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Also on board this mission was Besxar’s Fabships, two pilot manufacturing pods. The Fabships were integrated onto the Falcon 9 first stage booster, kicking off a series of flight tests supporting Besxar's development efforts.
This was the 13th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched SES O3b mPOWER-E, Crew-10, Bandwagon-3, mPOWER-D, CRS-33, and now eight Starlink missions.
Following stage separation, the first stage landed on the A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

China launches new satellite group into space

China has sent a new satellite group into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi province, state media reported on Sunday.
The satellite group was launched aboard a modified Long March-6 carrier rocket on Saturday and entered its preset orbit "successfully," Beijing-based Xinhua News reported.
The group will form part of the Spacesail Constellation, a mega commercial Chinese low-orbit satellite network.
This launch marked the 655th flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

The US and Russian leaders spoke for nearly 1.5 hours on the 250th anniversary of American independence, according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov
US President Donald Trump called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss the Ukraine conflict, the situation around Iran, and the prospects for restoring bilateral ties, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov has said.
The conversation took place on Saturday, as the United States marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
According to Ushakov, Putin personally congratulated Trump and the American people on reaching the milestone, after sending a formal message to the White House a day earlier.
The call lasted one hour and 25 minutes, Ushakov said, describing it as “businesslike and highly constructive.”
Ukraine conflict
Putin briefed Trump on what Ushakov described as the real situation on the ground in Ukraine, saying Russian forces were advancing along the entire line of contact and taking “one settlement after another.”
Putin described the liberation of Konstantinovka, a key Ukrainian stronghold, as an important step toward establishing full control over the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
The Kremlin aide said Moscow expects the remaining fortified areas still held by Kiev’s forces to be taken as well.
Putin reiterated Moscow’s preference for a political and diplomatic settlement, provided that Russia’s core positions are taken into account.
At the same time, he accused Kiev and its European backers of seeking to prolong and escalate the conflict, including through “terrorism against civilians.”
Trump, according to Ushakov, again confirmed his readiness to help bring the hostilities to an end and seek a peaceful settlement.
He also argued that ending the Ukraine conflict as soon as possible could unlock “enormous prospects” for mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and the US, the Kremlin aide said.
Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will continue mediation efforts and are ready to visit Moscow “at a convenient time,” Ushakov added.
Iran settlement
The two leaders also discussed the situation around Iran, where a public farewell ceremony is being held for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Putin expressed hope that the negotiation process based on the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran would help produce mutually acceptable, long-term solutions to key issues, Ushakov said.
The Russian president also reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to provide practical assistance to efforts aimed at de-escalation and stabilizing the region.
Trump thanked Russia for what he described as its balanced position and constructive proposals, according to the Kremlin aide.
Bilateral ties
Turning to bilateral ties, the presidents emphasized the importance of continuing contacts, including with regards to military-political and economic issues.
The leaders also pointed to the upcoming launch of a joint Russian-American crew to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome as a symbolic example of cooperation between the two powers.
The two presidents stressed the importance of preserving the shared pages of Russian-American history. Putin reminded Trump of Russia’s contribution to the emergence of American statehood, while both leaders highlighted the alliance between Moscow and Washington during World War II.
Trump mentioned that he personally admires St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum, while Putin wished the US success in hosting the ongoing FIFA World Cup, citing Russia’s own experience as host in 2018.
What’s next?
According to Ushakov, Moscow initiated the previous phone call on June 14, Trump’s 80th birthday, while this time it was the American side that proposed speaking on the day of the 250th anniversary of US independence.
The presidents agreed to remain in contact and hold another call in the near future, according to Ushakov. Putin also reminded Trump that he has a standing invitation to visit Moscow.

Ukrainian drones hit St Petersburg region oil terminal

MOSCOW, Russia: Russia's second-largest city, St Petersburg, and the nearby region were hit by a large Ukrainian drone attack overnight on July 4.
Local officials from both Russia and Ukraine said a port and oil facilities were targeted. These attacks are adding to fuel shortages in Russia.
St Petersburg's governor, Alexander Beglov, said the city of six million people faced a "large-scale" drone attack and that an oil terminal was hit. He added that no one was injured and the situation had been handled.
Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the nearby Leningrad region, said a drone struck the area near the port of Vysotsk, about 170 km northwest of St Petersburg on the Baltic Sea. The port handles oil, grain, coal, and liquefied natural gas.
He also said that 72 drones were shot down over the region, and there was only minor damage in a few areas. He did not give details about any damage to the Vysotsk port.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram that Ukraine's defense forces hit oil infrastructure at the port, which helps fund Russia's war.
He also said they struck Kronstadt, an important military target more than 850 km from Ukraine's border.
Russia did not confirm any attack on Kronstadt, which is a major naval base near St Petersburg and was also targeted by Ukraine in June.
This year, Ukraine has increased attacks on Russia's energy facilities, causing serious damage to oil refineries and leading to petrol shortages across the country.
Russia's state news agency TASS reported that President Vladimir Putin signed new tax changes on July 4 to support the fuel market. These include incentives to produce high-quality fuel.
In the town of Gatchina in the Leningrad region, a Reuters reporter saw long lines at petrol stations on July 3, with some stations running out of fuel.
One man waiting in line, who gave his name as Gennadiy, said it was frustrating to stand in queues after work. He added that he would likely have to queue again in a few days when he runs out of fuel.
In other areas, officials in the Bryansk region and Russian-controlled Crimea said drone attacks killed one person in each place and injured several others.
Further south of St Petersburg, the governor of the Pskov region said more than 30 drones were shot down overnight. He reported minor damage and some injuries, including at a factory in the town of Velikiye Luki.

While the former hostage admitted she would have liked to focus on her healing journey after 55 days of captivity, and after the release of her partner Matan Zangauker following 738 days, Gritzewsky said she felt she had a responsibility to share her story given that the opportunity was stolen from so many on October 7, 2023, and in the years that followed the hostage crisis.
“I’m from a suburb where, on October 7, many people were killed. They lost their voices; they were murdered, and they no longer have a voice. There are also more women and men who have experienced sexual assault and don’t have the power or voice to speak about it. So I want to give them strength and show them that if I’m standing here, you can too,” she explained.

Palestinian officials slam decision to end UNRWA's role in Gaza as 'poltically motivated'

Palestinian Authority officials have rejected US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace's announcement that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) will no longer be involved in the 'new Gaza,' describing it as a politically motivated move, inspired by Israeli influence, to destroy the Palestinian cause.
"Nobody can simply decide to cancel the role of UNRWA," said a Palestinian official. "The agency's mandate is rooted in International law and cannot be revoked unilaterally."
The official, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee, told The Jerusalem Post that there is hope Trump will change his mind and reverse the decision to exclude the role of UNRWA.

Fears Iranian drones could hit Portsmouth in British 'Pearl Harbor'

Iranian-built Shahed drones launched from a shadow trawler could deliver a “mini-Pearl Harbor” strike on Portsmouth naval base, Tobias Ellwood has warned. Mr Ellwood told Express.co.uk:
“We have no air defence there. You could easily see Shahed drones – the Iranian-style ones that have already hit Akrotiri – being launched off a shadow trawler on the other side of the Isle of Wight, using GPS to glide straight in.”
Mr Ellwood expanded on the threat: “They come in racks of five, and they are small enough to fit inside a standard shipping container.
You could easily sail a trawler from international waters… fire these things, and we wouldn't react in time because they would be flying low.
They could smack straight into our ships in Portsmouth. Boom – that is our own mini Pearl Harbor.”
Such an attack would test UK resolve and push narratives to withdraw support for Ukraine, Mr Ellwood warned.
Russia extensively uses these Iranian combat drones in Ukraine, and Mr Ellwood suggested Moscow would be the hidden hand behind a deniable strike on British waters.
Mr Ellwood said: “What they would do is try to persuade the British people that we should have nothing to do with Ukraine, that we should pull out, give it to Russia, and life will be quieter.”
He stated objectives include sowing “political discord” and exploiting divisions: “Hoping to help figures like Nigel Farage get into power because they see that the mainstream parties aren't strong enough.”
Mr Ellwood claimed Russia would strike now “because the longer they wait, the more time we have to develop the capabilities to defend ourselves. Right now, we are particularly vulnerable, so it makes sense for them to hit us early."
He further highlighted procurement failures, saying: “Our procurement process takes months, if not years… By that time, the technology has already moved on.”
Mr Ellwood noted military insiders discuss these risks: “Senior politicians and ministers are briefed on this, but because there's no public clamour for defence spending, it creates a fundamental challenge.”

President Trump made an out of this world jibe when he was allegedly briefed on alien “hybrids” living among humans, a congressman claimed this week.
“Trump was, during a briefing, told that there are hybrids and that there’s hybrids that potentially live among us,” Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) claimed on podcast American Alchemy on Thursday, referring to creatures that are supposedly crossbred between extraterrestrials and humans.
“Trump’s response was ‘You mean like Adam Schiff?'” said Burlison, who heard of the joke from those with knowledge of the meeting.
“I don’t know if it’s fiction or not,” Burlison said, apparently referring to the joke and not the alleged creatures. “I could totally believe that he would say something like that.”
As a Golden State congressman, Schiff, now a senator there, led the first impeachment effort against Trump in 2020. He also served on the House committee investigating the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
Trump has not been shy about his distaste for the Democrat alternatively nicknaming him “Shifty Schiff,” “Pencil Neck Adam Schiff,” “Little Adam Schitt,” and “Watermelon head.”
Besides alien hybrids, Trump has also been briefed on crashed spacecraft and non-human biological remains, claimed UFO whistleblower David Grusch in a 2025 interview on Fox News.
“Certainly members of this current administration are very, very well aware of this reality. Certainly the current president is very knowledgeable on the subject and I trust his leadership on this,” Grusch told Brett Baer last November.
Grusch, a former senior intelligence officer at the National Reconnaissance Office and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and an Air Force veteran, claimed on June 9 outside of Congress that there is a “continuum” of types of alien life that the US government is aware of including “corporeal bipedal” human-like creatures and “sentient plasmoid” beings.
Burlison even speculated that Trump has been briefed on the supposed existence of alien “Nordics,” which are said to be Scandinavian-looking, humanoid beings from another planet who some joke could resemble Norwegian World Cup team star Erling Haaland.
“Wasn’t [Trump] briefed on Nordics or something like Nordic aliens?” the “American Alchemy” host asked Burlison Thursday.
“Yeah something like that,” the lawmaker replied.
