FIFA cancels US star’s red-card ban after reported Trump call

Shocked Belgium has vowed to “defend football” after FIFA’s controversial decision to let Folarin Balogun play in the pivotal Round of 16 match

FIFA has suspended a one-match ban imposed on US striker Folarin Balogun, clearing him to play in the World Cup Round of 16 against Belgium after President Donald Trump reportedly asked the governing body’s chief to review the case.

Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute of the US team’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday. The New York Times reported that Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Wednesday and asked him to review Balogun’s suspension, citing people familiar with the conversation. The White House has not publicly confirmed the call, but referred reporters to Trump’s celebratory post on Truth Social.

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” Trump wrote on Sunday.

The decision has triggered outrage in Belgium, whose football federation said it was “astonished” by FIFA’s ruling and was examining “all potential options” ahead of the match. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia mocked the reversal as a poor April Fools’ joke.

“We’re not defending the national team or federation, we are defending football,” Garcia said.

Canada just passed a law that leaves people guessing what is illegal

I can’t get past one part of this law.

How are people supposed to know what’s legal if the answer depends so much on context?

Canada’s Bill C-9 creates new offences for blocking access to places of worship, schools, and community centers. It also criminalizes displaying certain hate symbols to promote hatred and increases penalties for hate-motivated crimes.

The law says hatred means an “intense and extreme” emotion tied to vilification and detestation, not simply speech that offends, insults, or hurts someone.

On paper, that sounds like a meaningful limit.

But then things get murkier.

The bill removes the old good faith religious opinion defence from the hate propaganda law. The government says the Canadian Charter still protects religious expression and that prosecutors must prove an intent to promote hatred.

Critics argue that isn’t enough.

Their concern is that whether something is legal could depend heavily on the surrounding context, how a statement is interpreted, and whether a court decides it crossed the line.

That creates a real problem.

Criminal laws are supposed to give people a reasonable idea of what they can and cannot do before they speak.

If the boundary only becomes clear after police, prosecutors, or judges interpret the situation, many people may decide it’s safer to stay quiet.

And that doesn’t just affect genuinely hateful speech.

It could also affect conversations about controversial political topics, religion, immigration, identity, or even conspiracy theories if people become unsure where vigorous debate ends and unlawful promotion of hatred begins.

That doesn’t mean those discussions automatically become illegal under Bill C-9.

It means uncertainty itself can change behavior.

Whether the law is ultimately enforced narrowly or broadly will matter just as much as the wording itself.

Because once people start wondering, “Could this get me investigated?” many won’t wait to find out.

‘Cannibalism’ claim in 4yo’s alleged murder, Woman charged after injured body of four-year-old boy found in NSW

A gruesome claim in the homicide investigation into the death of a four-year-old boy has been laid bare.

A woman has been charged with murder after the body of a four-year-old boy was found in a NSW home, with the woman allegedly making references to cannibalism when she walked into the police station.

Officers said they were concerned for the child’s welfare and attended a Central Coast property after attempting to speak to a 32-year-old woman who had attended Wyong police station around 4.40pm on Saturday.

Police found the body of the child who had significant arm injuries at the property and said he had been “deceased for some time”.

The dead child is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be known to the woman.

Superintendent Chad Gillies, Tuggerah Lakes Police District Commander, said the scene was “confronting” for the emergency services.

“My priority at the moment now is to work through the investigation with detectives to understand exactly what happened and why it happened, and importantly, as well, providing welfare to all the police that attended last night and through the investigation.

“Whenever a child is a victim of violent crime and whenever a child is murdered, it strikes at the core of community. That’s why it’s absolutely important we work through this methodically, we try to understand what’s happened, why it happened.

“From my perspective, we owe that to that little boy to make sure that we get the exact circumstances and present them to the court in due course, and that is the focus over the coming days and weeks for investigators.”

He added the woman was known to police.
