Abstract
Heavy metals’ contamination in cosmetic products is a serious threat. Present study was conducted to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) in various brands of cosmetic products with special emphasis on their health risk assessment. Five heavy metals including Cd, Cr, Fe, Ni and Pb were quantified in different brands of lotions, foundations, whitening creams, lipsticks, hair dyes and sunblock creams using atomic absorption spectrometry. Risk to the consumer’s health was determined using systemic exposure dosage (SED), margin of safety (MoS), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR).
On comparative basis, different brands of sunblock creams depicted highest concentration of Ni, Pb and Cr (7.99 ± 0.36, 6.37 ± 0.05 and 0.43 ± 0.01 mg/kg, respectively), whereas lipsticks had elevated levels of Fe at 12.0 ± 1.8 mg/kg, and Cd was maximum in lotions (0.26 ± 0.02 mg/kg). Multivariate analysis revealed strong associations among Cr, Ni and Pb, while Cd and Fe showed disparity in distribution and sources of contamination. MoS, HQ and HI values were within the permissible limit apart from for lotions and sunblock creams, while LCR value was higher than the permissible limit in all cosmetic products except lipsticks. Regular use of these products can cause serious threat to human health, particularly skin cancer on long time exposure. Therefore, continuous monitoring of cosmetic products, particularly with reference to HMs adulteration should be adopted to ensure the human safety and security.

Introduction
Application of different cosmetics for personal care is as old as human civilization. With the passage of time, demand of cosmetics has increased many folds throughout the world. This is mainly owing to the increased awareness about methods to enhance the outlook of the body (Ullah et al., 2017). Today the use of cosmetics for personal grooming and body care has become the norm throughout the world (OJEU, 2009). The global market for beauty products has shown an average increase of about 5% per year. It is an interesting fact that the market for cosmetics and personal care products has shown constant and stable growth ever since its origin and has progressed even in unstable economies (Barbalova, 2011).
Cosmetic products are composed of different organic and inorganic materials including hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances. In the manufacturing of coloured cosmetics, mineral pigments are commonly used which leads to the contamination of cosmetic products with heavy metals (HMs) such as, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Cr, Cd and other elements. These HMs become a part of cosmetic product intentionally in the form of pigments, preservatives, UV filters as well as antiperspirant, antifungal and antibacterial agents (Burger et al., 2016). It has been reported that human exposure to UV radiations can cause chronic as well as acute health effects on human skin, eye and immune system. Thus, cosmetic manufacturers use UV filters as important ingred

The declaration that broke Britain’s blockade
By 1778, Russia had already begun looking for ways to protect its merchant shipping. St. Petersburg proposed that Denmark jointly escort commercial vessels sailing to Russian ports, hoping to shield neutral trade from the growing conflict. The following spring, Russia, Denmark, and Sweden each dispatched naval squadrons to patrol northern waters while issuing declarations defending the rights of neutral commerce.
The effort, however, failed to stop the seizures. Spain, despite being aligned with revolutionary France against Britain, continued intercepting Russian and Dutch merchant ships carrying grain to Mediterranean ports.
On February 28, 1780, the Russian empress responded with one of the most important diplomatic initiatives of the eighteenth century: the Declaration of Armed Neutrality.
Its message was simple. Russia had respected the rights of neutral commerce throughout its own wars and expected the same treatment in return. If Russian merchant ships continued to be stopped or their cargoes confiscated, the empire would defend its maritime rights by force. Any attempt to seize Russian vessels now carried the risk of war with one of Europe’s great powers.
The declaration established several principles that would reshape maritime law. Neutral ships were to enjoy free navigation between the ports of belligerent states. Enemy goods carried aboard neutral vessels were to remain protected unless they constituted military contraband. Blockades would be recognized only when they were physically enforced by naval forces rather than proclaimed on paper. Most importantly, Russia pledged to back these principles with armed squadrons rather than diplomatic protests alone.

Space industry aficionados have big plans. They talk about the not so distant future when hundreds of thousands or even millions of satellites orbit planet Earth, beaming the internet to the unconnected, processing data in orbital computer centers, generating solar power and more. But this ambitious vision, which many in the sector think will become reality sooner or later, worries atmospheric researchers.
Studies show that since the beginning of the mega-constellation era in 2020, concentrations of potentially dangerous high-altitude air pollution stemming from satellite launches and re-entries has significantly increased. Based on estimates described by researchers as "conservative", the global space sector will have released by 2030 more climate-altering chemicals into the atmosphere than the entire United Kingdom. If the growth envisioned by the space industry leaders comes to pass, this air pollution, mostly concentrated in higher layers of the atmosphere, will at some point begin altering Earth's climate, Eloise Marais, a professor of atmospheric chemistry and air quality at University College London, told Space.com.
"The space industry pollution is like a small-scale, unregulated geoengineering experiment that could have many unintended and serious environmental consequences," she said.
Geoengineering is a term describing a number of possible interventions that could reverse the rise in global temperatures caused by the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One of the most commonly discussed geoengineering methods is the Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, which entails releasing large amounts of light-reflecting particles into the stratosphere, the second layer of Earth's atmosphere, to reduce the amount of heat reaching the planet. The idea is being studied by scientists, who warn that impacts may be unpredictable, including changes in rain patterns, draughts and unforeseen weather changes.
Marais is one of those scientists, leading a team that is studying the effects of satellite-related air pollution. Their latest study found that by 2029, air pollution from megaconstellation satellite launches — such as Starlink, Amazon Leo or Chinese projects Guowang and Quianfan — will account for more than 40 percent of all pollution generated by the space sector.

Operation New Dawn represents a massive, whole-of-government approach under President Trump's leadership to cracking down on violent crimes and crimes against children in great American cities.
This was a sweeping operation in Chicago that brought together 11 different federal agencies across the government who worked together to execute 305 arrests and recover 24 children — many of whom had been reported kidnapped or missing — as well as charging subjects with robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking, child exploitation and more.
The success of this op and more to come through initiatives like Summer Heat 2.0 should be a clear message that this FBI, our partners and the

Operation Global Chain identifies more than 2,000 victims across 59 countries
LYON, France – A coordinated international crackdown on human trafficking has led to the identification of 2,070 victims, the arrest of 1,024 suspects and the launch of 465 investigations.
Operation Global Chain, carried out from 8 to 12 June, brought together law enforcement from 59 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe in a targeted effort against trafficking networks involved in sexual exploitation, forced labour and criminality, and coerced begging.
The operation, led by authorities in Austria and Romania and co-coordinated by INTERPOL, Europol, Frontex and Ameripol, resulted in 334 arrests for human trafficking offences and 690 for associated crimes.
Coordinated enforcement action
During the five-day operation, police, border authorities and specialized anti-trafficking units conducted checks at border crossings, airports and other transport hubs, as well as locations identified as trafficking hotspots from investigations.
Participating countries exchanged intelligence in real time through INTERPOL’s secure I-24/7 communication network, as well as through Europol and Ameripol channels, enabling cross-checks and coordinated enforcement actions. In support of investigations, INTERPOL issued 17 new Notices, while border checks generated 20 hits against existing Notices.
Two international command centres were set up in Skopje, North Macedonia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to facilitate operational briefings, analytical support and direct communication between countries.

Victims identified worldwide
While the victims originated from 45 countries across multiple regions, the majority originated from Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, as well as Moldova and Nepal. Many were trafficked across borders after being deceived, coerced, or targeted because of their vulnerable situations.
Among the cases:
• Brazil’s Federal Police dismantled a transnational network trafficking victims to Cambodia where they were forced into online scamming. Authorities identified 406 victims (83 Brazilians and 323 foreign nationals) and issued two Red Notices and nine Blue Notices targeting wanted suspects and persons of interest.
• In Argentina, Federal Police carried out two raids, rescuing two Bolivian child labour victims exploited in a grocery store and arresting traffickers. Investigations revealed a larger coordinated exploitation network across multiple sites.
• Authorities in Belgium arrested 17 suspects after they dismantled a trafficking network recruiting underage girls via social media. The suspects allegedly held the victims captive, forcing them into prostitution rings across Belgium and France.
The victims identified during Operation Global Chain were referred to national protection and support services.
INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza said:
“Human trafficking remains one of the most profitable and pervasive forms of organized crime worldwide, generating hundreds of billions in illicit revenue every year and causing severe and lasting harm to victims.
“Operation Global Chain reflects our shared commitment to tackle this threat through coordinated, multi-agency action. The results demonstrate what can be achieved when countries work together to disrupt criminal networks and strengthen cooperation across regions. Human traffickers exploit vulnerabilities across borders; our response must be equally global, coordinated and relentless.”
Evolving human trafficking patterns
Operational findings highlighted evolving trafficking routes and methods, illustrating how criminal networks continue to adapt to shifting economic opportunities, migration dynamics and geopolitical developments.
Among the trends identified were the trafficking of Latin American victims for forced labour in Europe, their exploitation in criminal activities in Southeast Asia, and trafficking cases linked to forced engagement in armed conflicts.
Approximately 10 per cent of the victims were minors from the Americas who were subjected to sexual exploitation.
In response to evolving recruitment tactics used by traffickers, authorities in Colombia launched a prevention campaign targeting nationals lured by fraudulent job offers abroad.
By highlighting common trafficking tactics, the campaign aimed to reduce vulnerability and strengthen public awareness of the risks.
Note to editors
Operation Global Chain was conducted under the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT), with support from international partners and funding initiatives including EL PACCTO 2.0 and INTERPOL’s I-FORCE project.
Participating countries: Albania, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Belize, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Kosovo*, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, United States, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Venezuela and Viet Nam.

‘Crimes against humanity’: The CIA’s sickest secret may finally be exposed
New MKULTRA hearings have reopened questions about victims, destroyed files, and experiments America never answered for

decorated US Air Force serviceman with no history of violence suddenly abducted, raped and murdered a three-year-old girl.
When a search party found Jimmy Shaver wandering near San Antonio, Texas, he appeared to be in a trance, unable to explain where he was or how he had gotten there. After his arrest, he reportedly failed to recognize his own wife when she visited him in jail. Until the moment he was executed four years later, Shaver insisted he had no memory of committing the crime for which he had been sentenced to death.
More than seventy years later, some researchers believe his case may have been linked to one of the CIA’s darkest Cold War programs: MKULTRA, the covert project that sought to manipulate, erase and ultimately control the human mind through drugs, hypnosis and psychological experimentation.

That possibility returned to the spotlight on June 30, when the US Congressional Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets reopened one of the intelligence agency’s most notorious chapters. Lawmakers pledged to uncover the truth behind MKULTRA, the illegal human experimentation program through which the CIA developed and tested psychotropic drugs and interrogation techniques designed to alter behavior, memories and perception.
Whether the hearing lived up to those promises is another question. But the testimony presented before Congress suggested that, more than sixty years after MKULTRA officially ended, many of the program’s darkest secrets may still remain hidden.
Congress promises – again
Task force chair Anna Paulina Luna left little doubt about the gravity of the allegations.
“Administering drugs to people without their consent. Subjecting humans to psychological torture. Using prisoners and hospital patients as non-consenting research subjects. These are crimes against humanity. Some of the worst, most notorious crimes of the 20th century,” she declared in her opening remarks.
“The American people deserve the complete record. The victims and their families deserve acknowledgement, accountability, and justice. No one went to prison. No one was ever compensated by the government for the harm they caused.”

The language was uncompromising. Yet it was also strikingly familiar.
Nearly half a century ago, Congress opened another investigation into MKULTRA, promising victims that the full truth would finally emerge and that those responsible would be held accountable. Those commitments quietly faded away. The victims were never fully identified, compensation never came, and many of the program’s records were presumed lost forever.
Tom O’Neill, author of CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, reminded lawmakers that they were retracing a path Congress had already walked once before.

“During those same hearings, committee members like yourselves promised the victims of MKULTRA would be identified, compensated and provided lifetime medical care,” he told the panel. “None of that ever happened.”
According to O’Neill, lawmakers in the 1970s accepted one of the CIA’s most consequential claims with remarkably little scrutiny: that after more than two decades of secret experimentation, the agency had simply failed to master mind control.
