The MIM-104 Patriot system is a collaborative effort between Raytheon (now RTX) and Lockheed Martin. Raytheon serves as the prime contractor, manufacturing the system’s radar, engagement control station, launchers, and the PAC-2 interceptor missile. Lockheed Martin manufactures the advanced PAC-3 interceptor missile.
The system’s capabilities are divided by interceptor type:
PAC-2 (Raytheon): Uses proximity fragmentation warheads and track-via-missile guidance. It provides moderate capability against tactical ballistic missiles, as well as effective defense against aircraft and cruise missiles.
PAC-3 (Lockheed Martin): Features hit-to-kill technology and an active radar seeker. It offers high capability against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonics, and aircraft.
A standard Patriot battery is mobile, modular, and can be deployed in under an hour. It utilizes a phased array radar (AN/MPQ-53 or AN/MPQ-65) for detection and tracking, with an operational range of up to 160 km. The system is capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously, including high-speed aerial threats.
