Car expenses represent the largest work-related tax deduction claimed annually, totalling nearly $12 billion in the last financial year. The most popular tracking option is the cents-per-kilometre method, which applies a fixed rate for up to 5000 km of work-related travel. For the 2025–26 financial year, the rate is set at 88 cents per kilometre, enabling taxpayers to secure a deduction of up to $4,400.

ATO assistant commissioner Anita Challen confirmed it had sent out over 500,000 emails to taxpayers who have previously claimed car expenses in their tax return.

Every year, the ATO looks at areas that taxpayers commonly make mistakes,” she said. “We are watching car expense claims more closely than ever and have a strong focus where we think taxpayers might be making incorrect or excessive claims.

“This includes claiming home-to-work and back travel (which is generally treated as private travel) or common patterns like claiming the maximum 5000 kilometres.”

She said that whether you received the email or not, you should pay close attention to car expenses this year.

“Taxpayers should be paying close attention to this area and ensuring they are only claiming what they are entitled to and have the right records to back their claims,” she said.

Taxpayers who think they’ve overclaimed work-related expenses in previous years need to lodge an amendment or speak to their tax professional and ask them to amend their prior year claims.”

The fireworks erupted during an extraordinary session called by the Cuban government to discuss the embargo, which was approved on Tuesday with 136 votes in favor, nine against, and 30 abstentions.

Rodríguez further relayed a message from Raúl Castro, Cuba’s former president, brother to late leader Fidel Castro, stating that the army general is "ready to defend our homeland" - alluding to Waltz's references to the aged leader during his speech.

Rodríguez further labeled Waltz as an "insignificant official" and warned him, "Mr. Waltz, no one will remember you soon," while invoking Che Guevara, among others.

He concluded with the warning: "Anyone who attempts to seize Cuba will only gather the dust of its blood-soaked soil if they do not perish in the fight."

Waltz's position had been to turn things around on the Cubans, saying that the island-nation's communist leaders had in effect embargoed themselves. "There is no ring of Navy warships, US Navy warships sitting around this island blocking trade or humanitarian aid going into Cuba," Waltz said. "It’s fake. It’s false. It’s a lie. Period."

"There’s a lot of talk today of an embargo. And indeed there is one," he said. "It’s the embargo the Cuban regime mercilessly imposes on its own people decade after decade after decade."

Waltz called on Havana to "change your ways" and "turn the lights back on for your people," while accusing Cuba's leaders of living comfortably while the rest of the population starves and struggles with basic daily necessities.

After meeting Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said he is opening the process to remove Syria from the US terror list; the move could ease sanctions and pave the way for international investment and reconstruction

President Donald Trump informed Congress and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Wednesday that he had decided to remove Syria from the U.S. list of designated state sponsors of terrorism, opening the way for sanctions relief and renewed international investment in Damascus.

According to Reuters, which reviewed a letter Trump sent to al-Sharaa, a senior U.S. administration official said the letter was handed to the Syrian president after the two leaders met Wednesday at the NATO summit in Ankara. In the letter, Trump wrote that he had decided to remove Syria from the U.S. terror list and promised to clear obstacles preventing the country’s reconstruction.

“I promised to remove all barriers stopping you from rebuilding your country, and very soon, you will finally be able to do so,” Trump wrote.

“We have U.S. companies ready to invest in Syria and help make your country greater and more prosperous than ever before,” he added. Trump said he had notified Congress of the decision, which will now undergo a 45-day review before it can take effect.

The designation as a state sponsor of terrorism imposes restrictions on U.S. foreign assistance, defense exports and certain financial transactions. Removing Syria from the list would help pave the way for Damascus to reconnect with the global financial system and attract foreign investment.

Syrian Central Bank Governor Safwat Raslan said the U.S. move would expand investment opportunities, support economic recovery and help reintegrate Syria into the global economy, according to a post on Telegram.

The decision follows an executive order Trump signed last year ending a U.S. sanctions program on Syria, which allowed the country to begin moving away from international financial isolation. Several Saudi companies are planning billion-dollar investments as part of Riyadh’s efforts to support Syria’s recovery, while other Gulf states have also pledged financial assistance.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the move, describing it as “a significant milestone in the renewed bilateral relationship between the United States and Syria.”

“A stable and unified Syria that lives in peace with itself and its neighbors benefits not only the region, but the entire world,” Rubio said. He added that lifting sanctions would open the door to trade and international investment, giving Syria an opportunity to rebuild and opening “a new chapter” for the Syrian people.

Trump also praised al-Sharaa during their meeting. Before becoming Syria’s leader, al-Sharaa was a commander of the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Syria before cutting ties with the group in 2016. He later led a coalition of Islamist rebel factions that toppled Bashar Assad’s regime in late 2024. Trump said he supported al-Sharaa’s actions against Islamic State militants in the region. “He’s respected by everybody, including me,” Trump said of al-Sharaa.
