'Carry on Patriots': Suspended Apache pilots reinstated after July 4 flyover controversy
(TNND) — A suspension has been lifted for the eight Apache helicopter pilots who flew over the South Carolina coast on July 4 during Salute to the Shore.
"Effective immediately, the suspension of all involved South Carolina pilots has been lifted," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced Friday morning. "Carry on Patriots."
The announcement came one day after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X, "We'll fix this."
The South Carolina National Guard also announced it lifted the administrative suspension of the pilots.
"Getting these experienced aviators back to flight status ensures our peak operational readiness to support state and federal missions," a release read. "The 59th Aviation Troop Command remains committed to excellence, Soldier safety, and the highest levels of professionalism."
The special flyover marked the first time Apache helicopters participated in Salute from the Shore. According to a person close to the eight pilots who spoke with WPDE, the pilots received a message immediately after landing informing them they had been suspended pending an investigation.
There weren't any details — no specific reason why they were being investigated, just that they were under investigation," the source said.
The pilots, who are assigned to Alpha Company of the South Carolina Army National Guard, were temporarily removed from flight duties while the Guard reviewed their performance during the event.
"I can confirm that the SCARNG is currently reviewing the flight profile of the Apache helicopters that participated in the event," Maj. Lisa Allen said in a statement. "As is routine, the pilots involved in the flight have been temporarily suspended from flight duties pending the outcome of this review. Please note that this suspension applies only to flight operations; the pilots continue to report for their regular daily duties in a non-flying capacity."
Before the event, Capt. Kyle Wise told WPDE the pilots were looking forward to participating.
The Salute from the Shore military flyover takes place every year on the Fourth of July along South Carolina's beaches. This year, four Apache helicopters flown by airmen from the South Carolina Air National Guard joined the flyover for the first time. "You can't beat it, especially for America's 250th birthday. Those beaches are going to be packed. We're hoping, pending a few different variables, to stay safe, but we're open to giving them a show and trying to get as low as feasibly possible," Wise said.
The suspensions drew swift criticism from South Carolina officials.
"Well, this is ridiculous in my opinion, and I think a lot of people's opinions. These pilots were doing great work on the Fourth of July, giving everybody a great show and helping boost patriotism, and to hear that they're suspended over a complaint," state Rep. Tim McGinnis said.
U.S. Rep. Russell Fry also called on the South Carolina National Guard to end the review and reinstate the pilots.
"Millions of Americans applauded the incredible display during the Salute to the Shore flyover while expressing complete admiration for them and appreciation for our country and military," Fry wrote on X. "These pilots should be celebrated, not sanctioned."
