Messier 24: Sagittarius Star Cloud
Unlike most entries in Charles Messier's famous catalog of deep sky objects, M24 is not a bright galaxy, star cluster, or nebula. It's a gap in nearby, obscuring interstellar dust clouds that allows a view of the distant stars in the Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. Direct your gaze through this gap with binoculars or a small telescope and you are looking through a window over 300 light-years wide at stars some 10,000 light-years or more from Earth. Sometimes called the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, M24's luminous stars stretch across this gorgeous interstellar scene. Spanning over four full moons on the sky toward the constellation Sagittarius, the telescopic field of view includes dark markings B92 and B93 near the center of M24, along with other clouds of dust and glowing nebulae toward the center of the Milky Way.

Meteor Activity Outlook for 11-17 July 2026
Jul 10 2026
During this period the moon will reach its new phase on Tuesday July 14th. At that time the moon will be located near the sun and will be invisible at night. As the week progresses the moon will enter the evening sky but will be too thin to interfere with meteor observing.
This weekend evening observers can expect total hourly rates of 2 from mid-northern latitudes (45°N) and near 3 from tropical southern locations (25°S). Morning observers may see rates near 7 from mid-northern latitudes and near 8 from tropical southern locations.
The actual rates observed will also depend on factors such as personal light and motion perception, local weather conditions, alertness, and experience in watching meteor activity.
Note that the hourly rates listed below are estimates based on observations from dark-sky sites away from urban light sources. Observers viewing from urban areas will see less activity, as only the brighter meteors will be visible from such locations.
The radiant (the area of the sky from which meteors appear to originate) positions and rates listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning, July 11/12.
These positions do not change greatly from day to day, so the listed coordinates may be used throughout this entire period.
Most star atlases (available online, in bookstores, and at planetariums) include maps with celestial coordinate grids that can help you locate these positions in the sky.
I have also included charts of the sky that display the radiant positions for evening, midnight, and morning. The center of each chart represents the sky directly overhead at the corresponding hour.
These charts are oriented towards facing south but can be used for any direction by rotating them accordingly. A planisphere or planetarium app is also useful for showing the sky at any time of night on any date of the year.
Activity from each radiant is best seen when it is positioned highest in the sky (culmination), either due north or south along the meridian, depending on your latitude.
Radiants that rise after midnight will not reach their highest point until daylight; therefore, it is best to view them during the last few hours of the night.
1/2
It must be remembered that meteor activity is rarely seen directly at the radiant position. Rather, meteors shoot outward from the radiant, so it is best to center your field of view so that the radiant lies near the edge rather than the center.
Viewing in this way allows you to trace the path of each meteor back to the radiant (if it belongs to a shower) or in another direction if it is sporadic. Meteor activity is not visible from radiants located far below the horizon.
The positions below are listed in west-to-east order by right ascension (celestial longitude). The positions listed first are located farther west and are therefore accessible earlier in the night, while those listed farther down the list rise later.
The following sources of meteoric activity are expected to be active this week:
The alpha Capricornids (CAP) are active from July 7 through August 13, peaking on July 30th. The radiant is currently located at 19:24 (291) -15. This position lies in northeastern Sagittarius, 3 degrees northeast of the 4th magnitude star known as rho Sagittarii .
Current rates are expected to be near than 1 per hour no matter your location. These meteors are best seen near 01:00 LST, when the radiant lies highest in the southern sky.
With an entry velocity of 23 km/sec., the average meteor from this source would be of medium-slow velocity.
The large Anthelion (ANT) radiant is currently centered at 20:08 (302) -20. This position lies in western Capricornus, 5 degrees southwest of the 3rd magnitude star known as Dabih (beta Capricorni Aa).
This radiant is best placed near 01:00 LST when it lies on the meridian and lies highest in the southern sky. Rates at this time should be near 2 per hour as seen from the Northern Hemisphere and 3 per hour as seen from south of the equator.
With an entry velocity of 30 km/sec., the average Anthelion meteor would be of medium-slow velocity.
The July Pegasids (JPE) are active from July 4-28 with maximum activity occurring on July 12th. The radiant is currently located at 23:16 (349) +11.
This area of the sky is located in southern Pegasus, 4 degrees southeast of the 2nd magnitude star known as Markab (alpha Pegasi). This radiant is best seen during the last dark hour of the night when the radiant lies highest in the southern sky.
Rates are expected to be less than 1 per hour this week no matter your location. With an entry velocity of 64 km/sec., the average meteor from this source would be of swift velocity.
Sporadic meteors are those meteors that cannot be associated with any known meteor shower. All meteor showers are evolving and disperse over time to the point where they are no longer recognizable.
Away from the peaks of the major annual showers, these sporadic meteors make up the bulk of the activity seen each night.
As seen from the mid-Northern Hemisphere (45N) one would expect to see during this period approximately 8 sporadic meteors per hour during the last hour before dawn as seen from rural observing sites.
Evening rates would be near 2 per hour. As seen from the tropical southern latitudes (25S), morning rates would also be near 8 per hour as seen from rural observing sites and 2 per hour during the evening hours.

Outer Planets Assessment Group (OPAG) Update
July 10, 2026
Keith’s note: this was sent out to the OPAG Listserv this afternoon:
Dear OPAG Community,
Welcome to the new email listserv! We appreciate your patience during this transitional period as OPAG has shifted to a fully independent community organization.
Your dedicated steering committee has been working behind the scenes to chart the course for this next phase, and we’re excited for what lies ahead. To that end, we wanted to share a few important announcements in this inaugural email.
Save the Date: Our next OPAG community meeting is a virtual meeting and will be held September 22-24, 2026.
Meeting details and agenda will be forthcoming.
Call to Action: 7/13/2026 Deadline Rapidly Approaching
The Short Version: As you are likely aware, the Office of Management & Budget (OMB) has proposed sweeping rules changes impacting how the administration implements and awards federal grants (including NASA and the National Science Foundation, among others).
OMB’s proposed changes would transfer grant selections from a peer-review process to a political-review process, which is a deliberate move to place complete authority over federally funded science in the hands of an unaccountable group of partisan bureaucrats.
While the President’s Budget Request proposes to cut NASA science and mission funding – this move from OMB seeks to define what scientists can and can’t pursue with Congressionally allocated funding.
It is detrimental to American science and intentionally undermines scientific integrity. It also means that OMB will deliberately work around Congress to control the American scientific enterprise.
The Action: There is a critical window to influence this process that closes this Monday, July 13, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET.
This is a period to gather public comments (a process required by law for such a rule change). It is critical that we speak out clearly, though not emotionally, concerning the impacts of such a rule change.
Highlighting how such a change would conflict with existing policies and/or how it would be injurious to previously stated agendas and goals for NASA are key (e.g., proposed changes by OMB would undermine the Artemis program, stifle technological innovation, and surrender deep space leadership to other nations). Such feedback would provide both evidence and substance for legal injunctions to stop the implementation of the proposed rules changes.
This is not a time for a copy-paste form-letter submission, but rather should be composed of independent and individual submissions. Carefully articulated responses that are detailed, specific and constructive are best.
Resources: We include the following helpful links – the first is to the OMB proposed rules changes to which comments may be submitted directly:
https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/29/2026-10817/regulation-for-federal-financial-assistance
Next is The Planetary Society’s advocacy center which will autofill your information and send it for you once you have written your detailed, personal response in the box provided: https://www.planetary.org/advocacy-action-center?vvsrc=%5CCampaigns%5C137770%5CRespond
Finally, here is a press release from The Planetary Society calling for reversal of the proposed changes. The bottom of this form contains a list of resources including a helpful comparison tool to clarify the proposed rules changes: https://www.planetary.org/press-releases/the-planetary-society-calls-for-rollback-of-proposed-regulations-that-would-stifle-american-science-and-exploration
We appreciate and are incredibly grateful to all of you for your patience and continued engagement with our community through this transitional time.
We will provide updates as soon as meeting plans are finalized and our new website is online; until then, the LPI website will be maintained.
OPAG has served as a resource for our community for over 20 years – we look forward to engaging with all of you at our next virtual meeting, and deeply thank you for your continued support!

NASA Photographer Captures Images from F-18 Over Washington
Jul 10, 2026
NASA flight photographers capture history from a perspective few ever experience, getting a rare bird’s-eye view of the agency’s missions in action. Their photos document key NASA research and give the public a front-row seat to the work happening behind the scenes.
Jim Ross, a photographer at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, flew over Washington during the Fourth of July celebration to document a NASA flyover commemorating America’s 250th birthday.
He’s captured some of the agency’s most exhilarating milestones, like early SR-71 flights, the delivery flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour to Los Angeles, and first flights of NASA’s X-59 quiet supersonic research aircraft.
“I grew up in Bozeman, Montana, when it was still considered a small town, so if someone told that little kid that he would be flying in a F-18 over the National Mall, he would have never believed it,” Ross said.
“I love documenting history, and having the opportunity to capture flights and launches has kept me doing it for almost 37 years.”
Ross began his aviation photography career in 1989 when he joined the staff at NASA Armstrong (then Dryden). He became the photo lead in 1997, a title he retains.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launches for 35th time, hauls Starlink satellites to orbit
July 10, 2026
A SpaceX rocket just inched closer to the record books.
A Falcon 9 vehicle lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California tonight (July 10) at 11:01 p.m. EDT (8:01 p.m. local time; 0301 GMT on July 11), carrying 29 of SpaceX's Starlink broadband satellites toward low Earth orbit (LEO).
It was the 35th flight for this rocket's first stage, a booster designated B1071. The SpaceX record is 36, set just a few days ago by B1067 on another Starlink mission.
And, there will likely be more flights for B1071 down the road. The booster came back to Earth for a touchdown tonight as planned, landing in the Pacific Ocean on the SpaceX droneship "Of Course I Still Love You" about 8.5 minutes after launch.
The Falcon 9's upper stage, meanwhile, continued carrying the 29 Starlink satellites aloft. They're scheduled to be deployed in LEO about 62 minutes after launch.
The Starlink megaconstellation currently consists of more than 10,700 active satellites, according to tracker Jonathan McDowell.
The network is growing all the time, however, and it could eventually get very large indeed; SpaceX recently applied for approval to operate 100,000 of the spacecraft in LEO.
Tonight's launch was the 81st Falcon 9 mission of 2026. About 80% of them have been Starlink flights.

Space Force aligns for wartime footing with third tranche of PAEs
July 10, 2026
ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) – In the latest milestone of the ongoing Department of War-driven Acquisition Transformation, the Space Force has designated its third tranche of mission areas that will be assigned Portfolio Acquisition Executives including: Advanced Capabilities, Electromagnetic Warfare and Cyber, and Space Combat Power.
“Moving our portfolios into the PAE model completes a vital shift in our culture and operations,” said Thomas Ainsworth, performing the duties of the assistant secretary of the Air Force for space acquisition and integration.
“By pushing accountability and authority down to the mission level across every single capability we field and all our acquisition avenues, we are cutting through legacy bureaucracy.
The Space Force is now positioned to design, acquire, and field integrated systems at the speed of relevance.”
The portfolios are broadly arranged by mission area to minimize cross-organizational seams and dependencies while strengthening integration.

Japan’s space agency conducts first test flight for experimental reusable rocket
Posted: Jul 10, 2026 / 10:17 PM CDT
Updated: Jul 10, 2026 / 10:25 PM CDT
Japan’s experimental reusable rocket took off and safely landed in a first test flight Saturday as the country seeks to achieve the technology key to cut launch costs and compete in the global space market dominated by SpaceX.
The RV-X rocket lifted off, hovered and moved horizontally before landing during its less than one-minute flight at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Noshiro Testing Center in northeastern Japan, which was livestreamed by the NVS, a group of space fans.
The rocket flew as planned, rising 11 meters (36 feet) and moving horizontally 16 meters (52 feet) while keeping its upright position before landing, Takashi Ito, JAXA’s reusable rocket project manager, said in an online briefing from the test center.
Japan seeks to catch up with the technology Elon Musk’s SpaceX has been using for several years to cut launch costs of delivering payloads into space.
Saturday’s flight is a step forward for Japan in achieving the technology needed to develop a lower cost successor to the country’s current mainstay, single-use H3 series.
The flight comes one day after state media in China reported the country achieved its first successful recovery of the first stage of a rocket after a liftoff.
Japan’s H3 rocket is designed to be more cost effective than its predecessor H-2A series, which had a near-perfect success record, but still needs further cost cuts to compete in the global space market.
The Japanese government says a stable, commercially competitive transport capability is key to the country’s space program and national security.
JAXA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have been co-developing the RV-X, which is 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) in diameter and 7.3 meters (23.9 feet) long and equipped with an engine with enhanced durability and four shock-absorption landing gear.
The “hardworking” engine has so far withstood 165 combustion tests, Ito said.
JAXA, which is jointly developing reusable rockets with France and Germany, plans to send the RV-X rocket to a higher altitude of about 100 meters (218 feet) in future test flights.

Russian attacks capable of penetrating all Ukrainian defenses – MOD
11 Jul, 2026 16:02
Defensive countermeasures supplied to Kiev by its Western sponsors cannot stop Russia’s long-range strikes, Moscow has said
The Russian military is capable of “reliably penetrating” any Ukrainian air defenses and striking targets throughout the country, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.
The ministry made the remarks on Saturday, following a large-scale, long-range, overnight attack on Ukrainian arms production facilities and other related targets.
According to Moscow, these included several drone assembly and storage sites located in Kiev, as well as port infrastructure, military storage sites, and fuel depots in Izmail, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny in Odessa Region.
The evaluation of the ongoing long-range strike campaign has confirmed that the Russian military is able to “reliably penetrate any anti-aircraft air or missile defense systems provided to [Vladimir] Zelensky by Western sponsors,” the MOD stated.
The troops are capable of “reliably [hitting] any targets throughout Ukraine,” and the geography of the strikes is not limited to “the supposedly best-defended Kiev, where Zelensky has now deployed virtually all available Western missile defense systems,” it stressed.
According to Zelensky, the latest Russian attack involved more than 120 drones and 12 missiles, half of which were ballistic. While “most” of the targets were intercepted, all the ballistic missiles went through, he claimed.
In recent weeks, the Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly complained that its ability to fend off Russian ballistic missiles is dwindling, urging the country’s Western sponsors to provide with more interceptor missiles.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mocked Zelensky’s complaints in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, stating that the demands to ramp up arms deliveries would not do the Ukrainian leader any good.
“Nothing will help him. He’s like a tick that has burrowed into the flesh of the Ukrainian people that can’t get enough blood,” Zakharova stated.
In recent weeks, Moscow has ramped up long-range attacks on Ukraine’s military industry and dual-use infrastructure.
The Russian Defense Ministry maintains the strikes come in response to terrorist attacks by Kiev against Russian civilian infrastructure, which have intensified amid the string of setbacks suffered by the Ukrainian military on the battlefield.
Last week, Moscow announced the liberation of Konstantinovka, a major Donbass city located on the southernmost tip of the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration, the last major stronghold under Kiev’s control in the region.

Ukraine and Russia report large-scale reciprocal drone attacks
14:33, 11 July 2026
According to statements from both sides, the attacks involved missiles and large numbers of drones, with strikes reported in multiple directions, causing damage and casualties.
Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian forces launched 12 missiles and 121 attack drones and other types of unmanned aerial vehicles against Ukraine overnight on July 11.
According to the Ukrainian military, the attack involved six Iskander-M/S-400 missiles, four Kh-59/69 air-launched missiles and two Kh-31 missiles.

Guerrilla drone attack injures three at Colombia airport
7/11/2026 01:00
COLUMBIA - Colombian guerrillas injured three people Thursday in a drone attack on an airport near the Venezuelan border, in a region plagued by cocaine-trafficking related violence, the military said.
The armed forces blamed the Tibu Airport attack on the National Liberation Army, the country's largest active guerrilla group.
"Three workers presented injuries caused by the blast," the military wrote on X. The airport was damaged in the attack.
Armed groups in Colombia have stepped up their use of attack drones against the security forces and, in some cases, civilian targets.
The ELN is the oldest surviving guerrilla group in the Americas. It funds its activities through drug trafficking, extortion and other illegal activities.
Hard-right president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has vowed to break off peace talks with armed groups and crush them militarily when he takes office on August 7.

After Great White Shark attack, Australia's most populated state doubles down on drone shark patrols
July 11, 2026 10:00am EDT
Following a near-fatal shark attack in June, the New South Wales government announced a major expansion of its long-running Shark Management Program.
NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA – After a schoolteacher and mother of a 1-year-old was mauled by a great white shark in June, Australia's most populous state expanded its established shark mitigation program, committing more than A$120 million over the next two years to enhance shark detection and beach safety, including around-the-clock drone surveillance at more than 70 beaches.
Starting July 1, the New South Wales Shark Management Program launched year-round drone surveillance at 38 beaches across Sydney to detect sharks and help keep swimmers safe as four fatal shark attacks have already been recorded in Australia this year.
Just weeks earlier, on June 13, Leah Stewart was attacked by a great white shark estimated to be between 9 and 13 feet long while swimming between the flags at a patrolled beach.
Following the attack, the New South Wales government announced an additional A$34 million investment to expand drone surveillance, bringing year-round coverage to 72 beaches, including at least one beach in every coastal local government area.
This additional monitoring will prioritize beaches with high numbers of swimmers, surfers and paddlers, including in the capital city of Sydney and the North Coast, where shark interactions have become more frequent.
"We know people love getting out to our beaches, and they should feel confident doing it.
While no one can ever promise no shark interactions, this investment is about putting more eyes in the sky so we can spot sharks earlier and give people a clear heads-up when they’re in the water," Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said in a press release.
"More drones in the air means we’re getting a better picture of what’s happening offshore, and it means we’ll get better at seeing them. We’re backing practical technology that helps keep families, surfers and swimmers safer right across the coast."
PATROLLING FROM THE AIR
The aerial surveillance program is operated by Surf Life Saving NSW, a coastal rescue organization that trains drone pilots to patrol popular beaches from above in search of sharks.
Flying real-time patrols over the surf, operators scan coastal waters for potentially dangerous marine life like the massive shark that attacked Stewart in June.
When a shark is detected, lifeguards can immediately warn swimmers, clear the water if necessary and report the sighting through the NSW SharkSmart alert system.
The new funding will allow Surf Life Saving NSW to expand its drone program and explore emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance shark monitoring across the state.
In a recent press release, Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce said, "The Shark UAV surveillance program has proven to be an extremely effective component of the NSW Shark Management Program.
Just this year, we conducted more than 100,000 flights and identified and prevented over 2000 sharks interacting with swimmers and surfers."
1/2
DANGEROUS WATERS
The New South Wales Shark Management program is the largest and most comprehensive program of its kind in the world, and for good reason.
Three of the world's most feared sharks patrol the waters off New South Wales, accounting for nearly all serious shark bites in the state: great white, bull and tiger sharks.
The ocean's undisputable apex predator, great white sharks, are found along much of Australia's coastline but are most common in southern waters, including New South Wales, where they frequent nearshore temperate waters.
Bull sharks are common along the NSW coast and are unique for their ability to travel far into freshwater rivers and estuaries.
Tiger sharks inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters and range from northern Australia as far south as southern New South Wales, where they are found in both coastal and offshore waters.
KEEPING TRACK OF THE PREDATOR
Spotting sharks from above is only part of the strategy. New South Wales also operates one of the world's largest shark tagging programs.
The shark tagging initiative is led by scientists with the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, who work with contracted response crews to tag, track and study great white, bull and tiger sharks.
Sharks are fitted with acoustic tags that emit a unique signal. When a tagged great white, bull or tiger shark swims within range of an underwater listening station, the detection is shared through the SharkSmart system, giving lifeguards and beachgoers real-time alerts that a shark has been nearby.
A HISTORY OF SHARK SCARES
While drones represent the latest evolution in shark detection, New South Wales has been taking measures to reduce the risk of shark attacks for nearly 90 years.
In 1937, the NSW Government introduced shark nets at popular Sydney beaches after a series of fatal shark attacks, in an attempt to reduce the chance of interactions.
According to the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, there have been at least 198 unprovoked shark-human interactions that have been recorded in New South Wales since 1900.
Since shark nets were introduced, the average number of shark bites at netted beaches fell from 1.4 bites per year to about 0.25 bites per year, although the rate has increased to 1.2 bites per year since 2017.
Shark nets are designed to reduce risk, not eliminate it. According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, 35 unprovoked shark interactions have occurred at netted beaches in New South Wales, including 17 involving great white sharks.
Since the Shark Meshing Program began, there have been 42 attacks in the Sydney region, but none of the nine fatalities occurred at ocean beaches protected by shark nets.
Sharks have inhabited Australia's coastal waters for millions of years, and no amount of technology can eliminate the risk they pose.
But after four fatal shark attacks in 2026, New South Wales is counting on drones in the sky, tagged sharks beneath the waves and decades of scientific research to make its beaches safer.
"Even with the greatest technology and expanded presence of drones, we cannot prevent all shark interactions," Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce said.
"However, this funding will allow the development of a safety program that will give the greatest opportunity to prevent these from occurring."

U.S. Nuclear Attack Submarines Can Now Serve as Montherships For Underwater Drone Fleets with New Launch and Recovery System
July-11th-2026
The U.S. Navy has improved the capabilities of its attack submarines to conduct renaissance, mine warfare and seabed operations with the introduction of the new Iver4 900 autonomous underwater vehicle and the Torpedo Tube Launch and Recovery (TTLR) system into limited service.
The new system allows submarines not only to launch drones through their 21-inch torpedo tubes, but also to recover them afterwards while remaining submerged.
The ability to repeatedly launch and retrieve an autonomous underwater vehicle from a submerged submarine without requiring the submarine to surface is entirely unprecedented, and significantly expands the underwater fleet's reconnaissance capabilities and allowing ships to preserve their stealth.
The introduction of the new recovery capability is arguably more significant than recent advances in the capabilities of new submarine-launched underwater drones.
For well over a century, virtually every weapon or payload fired from a submarine torpedo tube - whether a torpedo, cruise missile, mine or decoy - has been designed as a one-way system.
Recovering a vehicle after launch has presented a far greater technical challenge than launching it. The TTLR system overcomes this by enclosing the drone within a removable launch-and-recovery sleeve inserted into a standard torpedo tube, allowing submarines to effectively operate as underwater drone motherships.
Developed by L3Harris, the Iver4 900 employs modular payload bays that allow operators to rapidly exchange sonar systems, seabed mapping equipment, mine detection sensors, electronic intelligence packages or other mission-specific payloads between deployments.
The compact drones are constructed from titanium and carbon fibre, and are rated to operate at depths of 300 metres. It is expected that new generations of similarly sized drones will follow it into service and be integrated onto the TTLR system.
The drones and the TTLR have reportedly already entered operational evaluation aboard Virginia class nuclear powered attack submarines.
Operationally, the Iver4 900 is intended to serve as an underwater equivalent of the “loyal wingman” concept increasingly appearing in military aviation.
Rather than exposing a multi-billion-dollar attack submarine to dangerous shallow waters or heavily defended coastal areas, commanders can dispatch the unmanned vehicle to perform hazardous missions independently.
These include mine reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, seabed mapping, hydrographic surveying, underwater intelligence collection, inspection of undersea cables and pipelines, and other high risk reconnaissance tasks.
Because the drone operates independently and without a tether, it can investigate areas tens of kilometres away from the submarine, significantly extending the reach of the ship’s sensor suite while reducing operational risk.
Mine warfare is likely to become one of the most important applications, and has remained an area where the U.S. Navy’s capabilities are relatively limited.
The greatest significance of the introduction into service TTLR system is likely not to be any individual mission that it facilitates in the near term, but rather the broader transformation of submarine operations that it facilitates.
Attack submarines have traditionally relied almost entirely on their own onboard sonar and periscopes for situational awareness.
Recoverable autonomous vehicles effectively become additional mobile sensor platforms that can operate independently over wide areas while maintaining continuous communication with the submarine through secure underwater networking.
Rather than a single submarine observing from one location, commanders gain multiple distributed sensors capable of covering significantly larger areas simultaneously. This has the potential to represent a major turning point for the U.S. attack submarine fleet.

UFO files: Dr. Phil scolds gov’t for not getting real about alien craft
Updated: Jul 10, 2026 / 10:02 PM CDT
Dr. Phil McGraw, who got an early peek at the latest UFO-related documents released by the Pentagon, offered a damning diagnosis Friday about the federal bureaucracy’s previous handling of the information.
“It just makes me furious that our government has been lying to us for 79 years about this. They’ve been lying by omission. I think they’ve been lying by misdirection,” the television personality told “The Hill” on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the Department of War released the fourth tranche of documents, including videos, about “unidentified anomalous phenomena.”
Some of the files date back to the late 1940s, around the time of alleged watershed UFO incidents in Roswell, New Mexico, and Richmond, Virginia.
McGraw says for years, an array of federal agencies has taken the issue seriously while credible sources have been discouraged from sharing information.
“We’ve seen lots of people talking about UFOs and things like that, but they were always people that were too drunk to fish,” he said. “And they have hidden away credible people that were talking about things that would move the needle.”
The latest batch of UFO files follow a directive from President Trump to identify UAP records that can be released to the public.
Some disclosure advocates call that progress but say it still doesn’t answer the question whether the government knows definitively that nonhuman intelligence exists.
“I think there are going to be continuing disclosures,” McGraw said. “I’m saying, ‘Why hide this from the private sector?’ We have scientists, we have leading university researchers that can dig into this. Why keep this from the American public?”
McGraw said the government should be “open” about UFOs while putting it “in a context.”

'Not Demons': UK Vicar Claims Ancient Prophet Ezekiel Witnessed Advanced Alien Technology in Secret Bible Code
11 July 2026, 2:43 PM BST
When a village vicar starts treating aliens as possible neighbours instead of demons, the old boundary between faith and the cosmos begins to thin.
A Church of England vicar in North Wales has claimed that biblical prophet Ezekiel may have witnessed advanced alien technology, arguing that key passages of scripture point to the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.
Father Lee Taylor, who oversees three churches in the region, says he believes aliens could be part of God's wider creation rather than demons or forces of evil.
Taylor said he had been re-reading parts of the Bible with an eye on how Christians might respond if scientists ever confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life.
Rather than seeing UFOs and aliens as a threat to Christian belief, he suggests that a 'bigger universe' simply points to a bigger understanding of God and creation.
Alien Ideas Rooted In Scripture, Says North Wales Vicar
Taylor's argument leans heavily on some of the Bible's more mysterious verses, including the Old Testament prophet Ezekiel's vivid vision of a 'wheel within a wheel' rising from the earth.
Biblical scholars have traditionally interpreted the scene as symbolic language for the glory and presence of God.
Taylor acknowledges that mainstream view, but notes that a minority of readers have long wondered whether the description sounds uncannily like complex alien technology witnessed by someone with no vocabulary to describe it.
He also highlights Jesus' words in John 14:2, when Christ tells his disciples: 'In my Father's house are many rooms.'
Christians have usually read that line as a metaphor for the breadth of heaven, a reassurance that there is space for many types of believers.
Taylor suggests an additional layer of meaning. He asked whether this could be read as 'some sort of hint' at a far larger cosmos populated by more of God's creations than humans alone.
Taylor's wider concern is straightforward enough. He wants believers, especially in his own parishes, not to panic if alien life is one day detected.
In his view, Christianity has absorbed scientific revolutions before, from heliocentric astronomy to evolutionary biology, and could do so again without collapsing.
'A bigger universe, or the discovery of a bigger universe, doesn't make God smaller. It just makes creation bigger,' he told the paper. 'I don't think it's a challenge to faith. I think it's a challenge to the limits of our theological imagination.'
1/2
Challenging 'Demons Or Nothing' Thinking About Alien Life
Taylor is openly pushing back at a particular strain of Christian thinking that treats every alien report as either deception or demonic activity.
He argues that labelling anything unexplained as satanic shuts down curiosity and keeps people locked in fear rather than honest investigation.
He is careful not to claim proof. Nothing in his reading settles the alien question, and he does not pretend otherwise. But he believes the Bible leaves more conceptual room than many churchgoers assume.
Genesis, he points out, repeatedly presents humanity as God's supreme creation on Earth. Emphasis on 'on Earth.' Taylor takes that phrase as quietly significant, leaving open, at least in principle, the possibility of other intelligent beings elsewhere in God's universe.
If aliens are ever discovered, he argues, 'there's no reason to assume that every other form of intelligence would fit neatly into categories of absolute good or absolute evil.'
That is a direct challenge to those Christians who see UFOs as camouflage for fallen angels, and it is also a swipe at secular narratives that imagine any advanced civilisation as automatically benevolent or automatically hostile.
The Church of England has not issued any formal response to Taylor's comments, and his ideas sit firmly in the realm of theological speculation rather than official doctrine.
No denomination-wide policy exists on how to interpret reports of UFOs or claims of alien contact, and nothing he cites from scripture has been verified as a reference to extraterrestrial visitors.
Without concrete scientific evidence of alien life, all of these interpretations remain contested and should be taken with a grain of salt.
What Taylor does capture, though, is a mood that crosses the boundary between church and laboratory. Astronomers keep identifying distant planets that might be able to support life.
Governments declassify old UFO files. Public fascination with aliens refuses to fade. Sitting in the middle of that noise, a parish priest in North Wales is quietly asking his flock to consider that, if we are not alone, Christian faith may bend but does not have to break.
His reading of Ezekiel and John will strike many as imaginative, if not outright far-fetched. Others will hear in it a cautious attempt to keep religious belief honest in the face of an expanding universe.
Either way, Taylor has dragged a once-fringe question into the Sunday sermon: if aliens exist, are they part of 'our' story, or a challenge to it?
For now, without a single confirmed alien microbe, let alone a visitor in a spacecraft, it is theology talking to a hypothetical future.
Yet the fact that a Church of England vicar is even framing aliens as potential neighbours rather than demons marks a small but noticeable shift in how some believers are thinking about life beyond Earth.
