As the story goes, in the summer of 1982, children in West Berlin bought a bag of 99 red balloons at a toy shop and released them. They flew high over the Berlin Wall into East Germany.
The East Germans scrambled a squadron of fighter jets to intercept the unidentified objects. The alert was noticed by Allied air forces, which launched their own fighters.
A standoff ended quickly when the balloons were identified. There were red faces all around.
The West German rock group Nena immortalized the story with its 1982 song “99 Luftballons” which became “99 Red Balloons” in the West. It was played throughout West Germany and smuggled into the East as a protest song. Elsewhere, it became a one-hit wonder in the U.S., certified gold for 500,000 sales.
