Very sad to hear of the passing of my good friend, Jim Roquemore. He was a successful businessman, an avid hunter, a great family man and a dear friend. My prayers are with his wonderful family and many friends.

Rest in peace, my friend.

My takeaways from the NATO Summit in Turkey

I wanted to offer my readout regarding two meetings in particular from today’s deliberations at the NATO Summit in Turkey. The first was with my Senate colleagues on CODEL Shaheen and President Zelensky from Ukraine and the second was with President Al Sharaa from Syria. Here are my takeaways.

Ukraine has exceeded every expectation on the battlefield. Now is the time to apply maximum pressure on Putin to end the bloodbath. I believe my Russia sanctions legislation with Senator Blumenthal is incredibly timely. It would allow President Trump to put tariffs on the top countries that buy cheap Russian oil and natural gas to prop up Putin.

I applaud President Trump’s decision to grant Ukraine a license to produce their own Patriot missile interceptors. I believe this will be a giant step forward. This war will eventually end through negotiations, and the sooner we get to the table, the better for all.

As to the meeting with President Al Sharaa, I believe it is in America’s national security interest to work with him and give him a chance to see if he can put together a lasting, functioning government in Syria. A fractured Syria, on the other hand, plays into the hands of our enemies. I think President Al Sharaa presents the best chance for a functioning, united Syria over time.

I very much understand Israel’s concerns, but President Al Sharaa has been a true thorn in the side of Iran. He has dramatically reduced Iran’s influence in Syria, which is a giant step forward for the Syrian people and a blow to Iran. It is time to recognize what he’s done regarding Iran and give him the capability to improve the lives of the Syrian people, realizing that the status quo is unacceptable for all.

Finally, President Trump’s meetings in Turkey have been outstanding. His personal engagement concerning both Ukraine and Syria will pay tremendous dividends for world stability.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський

@ZelenskyyUa

Good meeting with U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham @LindseyGrahamSC in Kyiv. This is already his 10th visit to our country, and we appreciate this support.

I'm grateful to Lindsey for recognizing our warriors. The stronger Ukraine is on the battlefield, the greater the chances that diplomacy will ultimately succeed. And right now, it is important that our long-range sanctions pressure on Russia be reinforced through new sanctions steps by our partners.

Lindsey briefed me on the work underway in Congress on the relevant bill. We also discussed our urgent air defense needs to protect our people. During the NATO Summit in Ankara, President Trump and I reached political agreements on licensing the production of Patriots in Ukraine. It is now crucial to implement all of this at the team level.

I thank the United States, the President, and Congress for bipartisan and consistent support from both chambers.
