My takeaways from the NATO Summit in Turkey
I wanted to offer my readout regarding two meetings in particular from today’s deliberations at the NATO Summit in Turkey. The first was with my Senate colleagues on CODEL Shaheen and President Zelensky from Ukraine and the second was with President Al Sharaa from Syria. Here are my takeaways.
Ukraine has exceeded every expectation on the battlefield. Now is the time to apply maximum pressure on Putin to end the bloodbath. I believe my Russia sanctions legislation with Senator Blumenthal is incredibly timely. It would allow President Trump to put tariffs on the top countries that buy cheap Russian oil and natural gas to prop up Putin.
I applaud President Trump’s decision to grant Ukraine a license to produce their own Patriot missile interceptors. I believe this will be a giant step forward. This war will eventually end through negotiations, and the sooner we get to the table, the better for all.
As to the meeting with President Al Sharaa, I believe it is in America’s national security interest to work with him and give him a chance to see if he can put together a lasting, functioning government in Syria. A fractured Syria, on the other hand, plays into the hands of our enemies. I think President Al Sharaa presents the best chance for a functioning, united Syria over time.
I very much understand Israel’s concerns, but President Al Sharaa has been a true thorn in the side of Iran. He has dramatically reduced Iran’s influence in Syria, which is a giant step forward for the Syrian people and a blow to Iran. It is time to recognize what he’s done regarding Iran and give him the capability to improve the lives of the Syrian people, realizing that the status quo is unacceptable for all.
Finally, President Trump’s meetings in Turkey have been outstanding. His personal engagement concerning both Ukraine and Syria will pay tremendous dividends for world stability.
