Sen. Lindsey Graham dies at 71 after ‘brief and sudden illness’
WASHINGTON — Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who was elected to the Senate in 2003 and was a close political ally of President Donald Trump, has died, his office confirmed early Sunday. He was 71.
Graham died Saturday night “from a brief and sudden illness,” his office said in a statement.
“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement continued.
Graham was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was seeking a fifth six-year Senate term in November. He was one of the most well-known members of the chamber and a key voice within the party on defense and international affairs.
Emergency personnel responded to a call for “cardiac arrest” at Graham’s Capitol Hill home on Saturday night, according to police scanner audio obtained by NBC News.
Photographs reviewed by NBC News show that paramedics carried a person on a stretcher from Graham’s home to an awaiting ambulance. Police cars and fire trucks were also on site.
Graham was fresh off a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
His death comes as fellow Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell remains in the hospital after paramedics responded to a call at a known residence last month for an individual experiencing cardiac arrest.
A McConnell spokesperson has said the former GOP majority leader is continuing to recover, but his team has not provided further details about his condition.

To be fair, after the age of 40 you can drop dead at any moment for just simple things like trying to stretch your back out.
Well the first thing to look into is that his last major event was a trip to Ukraine.
Khosla-led group agrees to buy Seahawks; sources say $9.6 billion
A group led by San Francisco 49ers limited partner Vinod Khosla has agreed to purchase the Seattle Seahawks, it was announced Saturday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but multiple league sources with knowledge of the matter said the selling price would be $9.612 billion, a record for an NFL franchise.
As part of the deal, which is subject to owner approval, the Khosla family will be required to relinquish its ownership stake in the 49ers. The family will become the Seahawks' controlling owner.
Owners have been given a date in late August to keep open for a special meeting to approve the deal, the sources said.
"We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks," said Vinod Khosla on behalf of the Khosla family. "We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere."
The Seahawks went up for sale after the team beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl this year. The franchise has been owned by the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen since his death in 2018. Allen's sister, Jody, has controlled the team as executor of the trust, with a directive from her brother to eventually sell the Seahawks and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers and donate the proceeds to charity.
Paul Allen agreed to buy the Seahawks from Ken Behring in 1996, with the deal becoming official in 1997. The deal saved the team from a potential relocation to Southern California.
The Seahawks have made the playoffs in seven of the past 10 years. They are based at legendary Lumen Field, which opposing players have said is one of the toughest stadiums to play at and which received nearly $20 million in upgrades ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The franchise also has one of the NFL's best-regarded general manager-head coach combinations in John Schneider and Mike Macdonald.
Khosla is the founder of Khosla Ventures, a venture capital firm, and has a net worth of $13.8 billion, according to Forbes. Khosla Ventures has made early-stage investments in companies including OpenAI, DoorDash and Instacart. He joined the 49ers ownership group in 2025, buying 3.1% of the team at a more than $8.5 billion valuation.
It's unclear who else is a part of Khosla's investor group.
The last NFL franchise to go up for sale was the Washington Commanders, which a group led by Josh Harris purchased for $6.05 billion in 2023. Before that, the Walton-Penner family bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion in 2022. The record price paid for any American sports franchise is $10 billion, set when Mark Walter agreed to purchase majority ownership in the Los Angeles Lakers from the Buss family in 2025.

Hunter Biden Scores $1.7 Million in Damages From Former Overstock CEO in Defamation Case
A federal judge in Los Angeles awarded $1.7 million in punitive damages to Hunter Biden on Friday as part of a defamation case against Patrick Byrne, the former CEO of Overstock.com.
Byrne claimed in 2023 that Biden pledged to get his father, then-President Joe Biden, to unfreeze $8 billion in Iranian assets in exchange for an $800 million bribe. The younger Biden’s lawsuit says Byrne made this claim in an interview in June of that year, and again in a social media post the day after the Oct. 7 attacks.
“The clear implication of Byrne’s October 8, 2023 posts was that Plaintiff’s allegedly criminal and corrupt actions had contributed to the terrorist attacks by Hamas,” the complaint stated.
On Friday, Judge Stephen Wilson of the Central District of California issued a ruling awarding Hunter Biden punitive damages:
Here, the evidence is clear and convincing that defendant has engaged in intentional misrepresentation with conscious disregard towards plaintiff’s rights. Defendant’s defamation went far beyond mere negligence. In fact, defendant has admitted that after the offending article was published, defendant repeatedly reposted the article across social media platforms and encouraged his followers on those platforms to promote it further. In fact, during the pendency of this litigation, even while Defendant was defying the Court’s orders and failing to appear at hearings, Defendant appeared on talk shows and restated the same defamatory statements at issue in the case.
Biden sought $1 in nominal damages, which Wilson granted. The judge also ordered Byrne to pay about $35,000 in court sanctions.
“This is a complete vindication for Hunter Biden against the false statements made about him by Patrick Byrne,” said Bryan Sullivan, an attorney for Biden. “As found by the court, Byrne had no basis to say that Hunter had any involvement with Iran whatsoever.”
Byrne is a longtime supporter of Donald Trump and has promoted conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and Covid vaccines. He resigned as CEO of Overstock in August 2019 after he disclosed having a romantic relationship with convicted Russian spy Maria Butina.

U.S. citizen working for humanitarian organization in Congo tests positive for Ebola, CDC says
A U.S. citizen working for a humanitarian organization in Congo has tested positive for the Ebola virus, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday, as the Central African country struggles to contain the swelling outbreak.
The CDC said it was working with the person's employer, U.S. agencies, the public health authorities and Congolese partners to prevent further transmission and identify close contacts. It did not provide any further details.
A State Department spokesperson told CBS News that it was "aware of this case" and was "actively facilitating support for the American citizen affected."
Earlier this week, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that the outbreak is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded on the continent, with 1,830 confirmed cases in Congo, including 648 deaths. Cases have also been confirmed in neighboring Uganda.
In the first week of the outbreak, an American doctor working in Congo tested positive for the virus and was transferred to Germany for treatment. After weeks of care at a hospital in Germany, he recovered. He and his family, who were quarantined separately, returned to the United States in June.
Initially, Trump administration officials had said that the United States was planning to send Americans who are exposed to Ebola while abroad to a new facility in Kenya instead of flying them home. But the project has been suspended after an order from a Kenyan court.
In a recent request to Congress, the Trump administration asked for $1.4 billion in supplemental funding to respond to the outbreak in the Congo, Uganda and elsewhere.
The Congolese authorities declared a fresh Ebola outbreak on May 15, after the disease had been transmitting for weeks without official detection, according to the World Health Organization
The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved vaccine or treatment. It often causes deadly symptoms. Last week, clinical trials for treatment began after researchers launched a highly anticipated study in the hope of fighting the virus.
Meanwhile, an ongoing conflict in eastern Congo has led thousands of people to flee the violence, spreading the virus further. Mistrust and attacks on health centers have also hampered the response. Doctors and other healthcare workers often do not have adequate protective gear, which can leave them vulnerable to the virus.

Man free to sexually assault children, rules Alberta's top court
Courts say Kendall Longclaws can't be prosecuted or psychiatrically detained for sex crimes against three minors because he was never taught to communicate.
Last week, Alberta’s top court ruled that a deaf man who never learned to communicate can’t be tried for sex crimes, or even assessed for mental fitness to stand trial, because it would violate his Charter rights. This means the man is functionally exempt from the Criminal Code, and is thus free to rape and even murder if he so wishes.
At very least, the average Albertan isn’t likely to run into Kendall Longclaws. He grew up on an isolated farm with seven siblings and continues to live there, in his 30s, with his parents. He doesn’t leave the property without them. He’s deaf. He can’t read, understand a calendar, or use a phone. The only word he can speak is “brother”; he can also write his name, play video games, and use grunts and rudimentary gestures that relate to his daily life, like “yes,” “sorry,” and riding horses. Beyond that, his family never taught him how to communicate.
Brief attempts at school and tutoring when he was a child went nowhere. He knows what “mom” means, but he lacks the ability to understand society’s institutions, including courts and justice.
So, when Longclaws was charged with eight sexual offences against three complainants in 2021, he had no idea what was going on.
The alleged acts of sexual interference and sexual assault against the first two complainants occurred between 2012 and 2016, while the third complainant was allegedly victimized in 2021. There exists little public information about them. Some, or perhaps all, were children. We can deduce that they have, at least at some point, close proximity to the Longclaws family because of the cloistered lifestyle of their alleged assailant. And we know, for a fact, that the courts have gravely failed them.
The first and so far only attempt at trying Longclaws for sex crimes resulted in failure in 2025: King’s Bench Justice Debra Yungwirth prematurely stayed the charges before any trial could occur, asserting that there was no legal way to handle the matter in court.
For one, reasoned Yungwirth, Longclaws needed an interpreter to see that his language rights were met as he couldn’t understand English, and because he had no actual language to interpret English into, there was no possible way to honour this Charter right.
The Crown argued that Longclaws should be assessed for his fitness to stand trial — which, if he was found to be mentally unfit, would at least result in him being taken to live in a mental hospital for as long as psychiatric authorities thought it necessary. Justice Yungwirth said that even a fitness assessment would breach Longclaws’ Charter right to liberty because his inability to communicate would make it impossible to assess his cognitive functioning.
Yungwirth went on to say that there was “no evidence” that Longclaws had any mental disorder. Indeed, he was so mentally stunted that he seemed to fall off her radar.
“There is clear prejudice to the integrity of the justice system that will be manifested, perpetuated and aggravated by the continuing (sic) with the criminal proceedings against Mr Longclaws,” she wrote.
She went on to frame her decision as a mere inconvenience to the victims, sidestepping the fact she just undermined public safety by releasing an alleged sex predator: “I recognize that a stay of proceedings will mean that the Complainants are deprived of their day in court. Mr Longclaws is equally deprived of the opportunity to resolve the allegations against him, which is significant in his small community. While the result is unsatisfactory to all involved, there is simply no other remedy available.”
Yungwirth’s ruling was perhaps the most absurd thing to come out of a Canadian court that year. She gave Longclaws a total exemption from criminal liability while also completely ruling out the possibility of removing him from society. She judged him as if he were an escaped gorilla enabled by unwatchful keepers, not a man; a beast outside the jurisdiction of human laws.
The Crown also stressed the importance of the “public interest in proceeding to a trial” where sexual violence against children is involved, but this went unaddressed by the Alberta Court of Appeal.
It is perhaps noteworthy that one of the appeal judges, Alice Woolley, is the author of the leading textbook on lawyer ethics in Canada.

Hageman Demands Answers From Zuckerberg About Cheyenne Data Center Contamination
Wyoming U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman in a Thursday letter is demanding answers from Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg about how its Cheyenne data center contaminated the city’s wastewater system. “I am deeply concerned,” she wrote.
Wyoming’s lone U.S. House representative is demanding answers from Mark Zuckerberg on a Cheyenne-area data center wastewater contamination incident that caused the city’s reuse system to shut down for months.
The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities (BOPU) issued a public notice June 26 that laboratory staff identified a bacterium, Cupriavaidus gilardii, in a wastewater sampling.
The board on July 2 identified the source of the initial contamination as Goat System LLC — a Meta data center company in the development known as Project Cosmo.
That public announcement about the contamination came more than four months after the Meta contractor — which is building an $800 million data center in south Cheyenne — disrupted the city’s reclaimed wastewater system with the rare bacterial contaminant.
The board had revoked Goat Systems’ industrial discharge privileges for fill-and-flush operations, and Cheyenne’s reuse water system was taken offline.
U.S. House Rep. Harriet Hageman demanded answers in a Thursday letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
“Many are rightfully concerned about high water consumption rates by data centers in our communities where every drop of water is accounted for and needed,” wrote Hageman, “so I am even more concerned that this contamination seemingly came from your facility’s closed-loop cooling system, a technology that is marketed as being a solution to high data center water consumption rates.”
Hageman added that, “Many Wyomingites are also rightfully concerned that they learned about this contamination on June 26 and that the Meta Cheyenne facility was identified as the culprit on July 2nd, when the discharge privileges for Goat Systems was revoked on March 24th.”
New industries seeking to enter small-community Wyoming life can only do so with support from local communities, wrote Hageman, “which is earned built on trust, collaboration and communication with our citizens.
“I am deeply concerned that Meta did not follow this model in this instance.”
What She’s Asking Zuckerberg
She poses five questions to Zuckerberg:
• How did the contamination happen, including from the closed-loop cooling system — and had that happened elsewhere?
• When did the project companies and contractors learn of the issue and what steps did they take to alert the local, state and federal authorities and mitigate the threat?
• Where is the facility taking its wastewater now, and how will that prevent threats to Wyoming communities?
• Does Meta plan community outreach on this incident?
• Can closed-loop cooling systems scale down water consumption safely?
Hageman concluded, “Wyoming deserves information and consultation from the industries which plan to call our state home.”
A Meta spokesperson in a Thursday email reiterated the company's earlier statement on the contamination.
"Meta is supporting the efforts of our general contractor, Fortis, to resolve this issue with the City of Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities," the statement says. "When the board shared that it found a substance in the city's wastewater — not public drinking water — Fortis immediately stopped discharging industrial wastewater and began hauling it offsite. Fortis also began its own water testing with an independent environmental specialist which has found no trace of the substance."
The statement concludes, "Meta is committed to being a good neighbor in Cheyenne, including through the protection of local water resources, and will continue encouraging collaboration between Fortis and the board until this situation is resolved.”

Germany's Merz says deal reached to buy Tomahawk missiles from US
Germany has reached an agreement with the United States to buy Tomahawk medium-range cruise missiles, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday.
The deal was struck at the NATO summit in Ankara, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, Merz told Germany's lower house of parliament.
"We have also agreed with the US government on the sidelines of the NATO meeting in Ankara that we will acquire American Tomahawk missiles and station them in Germany," the chancellor said. "In doing so, we are closing an important strategic gap in our defence."
Merz said Germany will also "work to develop our own European systems and station them in Europe."
US President Donald Trump had previously rejected a plan agreed in 2024 under his predecessor Joe Biden to station Tomahawks in Germany by 2026.
Berlin had since sought to convince Washington to instead let it purchase the missiles, which have a range of up to 2,500 kilometres.
In 2024, the German Defence Ministry outlined its intention to use Tomahawk missiles to counter the threat from Moscow, noting that Russia had stationed nuclear-capable Iskander missiles and fighter jets equipped with hypersonic missiles in the Kaliningrad exclave bordering Lithuania and Poland. Russia also planned to station nuclear weapons in Belarus, the ministry said.
Moscow is 1,600 kilometres away from Berlin as the crow flies, meaning Tomahawk missiles could reach deep into Russian territory from Germany.
European NATO countries do not currently possess their own medium-range weapons. Several allies intend to procure weapons systems for long-range precision strikes through the European Long-Range Strike Approach (ELSA) project, which was launched at the NATO summit in Washington in 2024.
Under this joint umbrella, some European NATO allies intend to develop their own cruise missile with a range of more than 2,000 kilometres.
The German Defence Ministry said last year that work on this new capability for long-range weapons had begun.
Land-based ballistic missiles and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometres were banned under the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The US and European NATO member states accused Russia of breaching the INF Treaty by developing a new land-based, nuclear-capable medium-range cruise missile of the 9M729 type. In 2019, the US subsequently withdrew from the INF Treaty.

Apple to invest $30 billion in US chip manufacturing
'Apple has made investing in the United States a clear priority, and we hope other companies will follow its lead,' a Trump administration official says.
Apple announced Wednesday it is investing more than $30 billion in chip manufacturing in the U.S.
The investment, in partnership with Broadcom, is set to produce 15 billion chips, creating hundreds of U.S. jobs. Broadcom's facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, is expanding its capabilities to produce the chips.
"This is another major win for America and another sign that the Trump administration’s economic agenda is delivering results," a Trump administration official told Fox News Digital. "Apple has made investing in the United States a clear priority, and we hope other companies will follow its lead. We commend Apple for recognizing this opportunity and taking meaningful steps to strengthen America’s chip supply chain."
Apple CEO Tim Cook touted its partnership with Broadcom and both companies' "commitment to American manufacturing and innovation."
"The cutting-edge components built in Fort Collins are essential to delivering the incredible performance and connectivity our customers expect, and we’re proud to deepen our investments in U.S.-based suppliers that share our commitment to excellence and innovation," Cook said in a statement. "We’re grateful to the President and his administration for supporting important projects like this."
"Broadcom is proud to continue to work with Apple after decades of success together, and we share a strong commitment to American innovation," Broadcom President and CEO Hock Tan stated. "With Apple’s newest commitment, we’re pleased to expand our manufacturing footprint in Fort Collins, where we create groundbreaking technology that connects people around the world."
Apple announced a whopping $600 billion investment in a four-year period since the beginning of the second Trump administration, including the manufacturing of AI servers at a facility in Houston.
Apple previously told Fox News Digital in October that it was partnering with local contractors to build the facility, and is working closely with Houston City College to recruit and hire local talent.
A source familiar with the conversations told Fox News Digital that President Donald Trump made a direct appeal to Cook to "go big" on American jobs and reshoring its manufacturing base, and that Cook told the president he would "step up," which led to a commitment to the $600 billion investment in America.
