The New York Times reports Israel spent years cultivating former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a potential replacement for Iran’s ruling regime.
The alleged operation included covert meetings with Mossad chief David Barnea in Hungary in 2024 and again in 2025, financial support for housing and travel, and an operation to free Ahmadinejad from house arrest after strikes targeted his IRGC bodyguards at the start of the U.S.-Israel campaign.
According to the report, Ahmadinejad ultimately abandoned the plan after becoming disillusioned with Israel’s strategy. He was later briefly seen at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral and is now believed to be in IRGC custody over alleged ties to Israeli intelligence.
