Victor Davis Hanson: The World Is Becoming More Pro-American Than It Has Been in Years

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON

• July 14, 2026

Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for the Daily Signal.

The world that we’re looking at today is radically different than that of just five years ago, radically different in the sense that it is much more in the interest of the United States.

And I know that seems controversial because [President Donald] Trump is written off as someone who is too fluid and volatile.

His tweets, his verbiage, can put people off, but that’s the art-of-the-deal unpredictability of his nature. Some of it can be a drawback, some of it an advantage, but overall, it doesn’t help analysis to just look at what he says. It’s more important to see what he’s done.

Let’s go through the world abroad as it is today systematically.

Look at Latin America. Five years ago, the Chinese were controlling, through their surrogate companies, the entry and exit to Panama. Russia and China were the de facto rulers of Venezuela, with the second-largest oil reserves in the world. A slew of communist governments had taken over South America. Cuba was still defiant.

The world is in a far different position than it was just five years ago.

Across Latin America, governments are becoming more aligned with the United States while Chinese influence continues to recede.

Europe is dramatically increasing defense spending, strengthening its borders, and rethinking energy policies after years of dependence and underinvestment. Russia is weaker economically and militarily, Iran has suffered devastating losses to its military and nuclear infrastructure, and China faces growing economic and strategic challenges as its global ambitions encounter new obstacles.

Many of these changes stem from Donald Trump's willingness to abandon traditional diplomacy in favor of an unpredictable negotiating style that pressured both allies and adversaries. NATO members are committing more resources to their own defense, America's strategic position has strengthened across multiple regions, and longtime rivals face greater economic and military pressure than they did just a few years ago. Whether history ultimately judges Trump's approach favorably remains to be seen, but the global balance of power has shifted in ways that increasingly favor the United States.

I can't believe this is real.

The Chancellor of UC San Francisco testified under oath that a "vast majority of pregnancies are in women." Implying some pregnancies occur in men.

When asked directly whether a non-biological woman has ever had a baby, he refused to answer. This is the head of one of the top medical schools in the country.

Stocks rise on Big Tech gains, encouraging inflation signs: Live updates

Stocks rose on Wednesday, led by gains in major technology stocks, as traders reacted to more data showing inflation is cooling.

The S&P 500

gained 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite

added 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average

added 298 points, or 0.6%.

Shares of Big Tech companies bolstered the market. Amazon

, Apple

and Microsoft

climbed around 3%, while Alphabet

moved up more than 1%. Additionally, shares of SpaceX

were in the green.

Investors grew optimistic on the state of inflation after New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said in a speechWednesday that “there are encouraging reasons to expect that inflation has peaked and should edge down in coming quarters.”

On Wednesday, the produce price index unexpectedly fell 0.3% in June, while economists had expected it to be unchanged on the month. That follows Tuesday’s cooler-than-expected consumer price index report, which bolstered hopes that the Fed may not need to raise interest rates as aggressively this year. The report prompted traders to scale back expectations for near-term Fed tightening.

The probability of a rate hike at the central bank’s July meeting fell to 17% from 42% a day earlier, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool. Markets, however, continue to price in an increase later this year, with traders assigning a 63% probability that rates will be a quarter- or half-percentage point higher following the September meeting.

While energy played a big role in the price deceleration, the easing was pretty broad and spread across a bunch of categories, a relief to investors,” Adam Crisafulli, founder of Vital Knowledge, said in a note. “However, the Fed and economy aren’t in the clear – inflation is still elevated on an absolute basis, oil is back on an upswing, and AI is proving to be very inflationary at the moment.”

While equities were higher, gains were limited as crude prices remained elevated, however. That’s after U.S. Central Command said the U.S. launched more attacks against Iran. West Texas Intermediate futures

were last trading above $78 per barrel. International Brent

traded above $83 per barrel.

==BlackRock

was also a winner Wednesday, with shares up more than 6% after the asset management firm reported better-than-expected quarterly results.==

US says morning strikes targeted Iranian missile sites on Greater Tunb

Summary

US forces struck coastal defense systems and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island in a 90-minute operation on Wednesday, CENTCOM said.

US forces launched a new wave of strikes on Iran at 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, targeting military capabilities used in attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, US Central Command said.

Iran's army said on Wednesday it would respond after a US strike on one of its barracks in southeastern Iran that it said killed seven military personnel.

US President Donald Trump said he would expand military strikes on Iran to power plants and bridges unless Tehran returned to negotiations, warning in a Fox News interview broadcast on Tuesday that attacks would intensify next week.

US Central Command said American forces resumed a naval blockade against vessels transiting to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, adding that more than 20 US Navy warships and hundreds of military aircraft are operating across the Middle East.

India and New Zealand summoned senior Iranian diplomats on Tuesday over the escalation and attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, urging de-escalation and a return to diplomacy.

US military personnel and contractors in the Middle East were targeted in a coordinated phone-tracking campaign before and during the Iran war, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing telecom data, cybersecurity experts and officials familiar with the matter

Iran orders media to avoid internal political disputes

Iran's Press Supervisory Board instructed media outlets on Wednesday not to highlight political and factional differences or amplify social divisions, as authorities tightened guidance on domestic coverage during the conflict.

In a statement, the board said media should rely only on "official, credible and verifiable sources" and avoid "publishing narratives that could disturb public opinion."

It also told outlets to avoid "highlighting political and factional differences," "reproducing internal disputes" and publishing "inflammatory" content or "any content that harms national cohesion, the psychological security of society and the public interest."

Iran is among the world's lowest-ranked countries for press freedom, according to Reporters Without Borders, which said this year that the country's ranking continued to be held back by state repression.

US infrastructure threats no reason to continue talks, senior Iranian cleric says

A senior Iranian cleric said on Wednesday that Iranian officials should not continue negotiations with the United States by citing concerns over damage to the country's infrastructure, after President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran's power plants and bridges.

Alireza Arafi , head of Iran's seminaries, said officials should not continue "negotiations and the memorandum with the infidels" because of economic difficulties, fear of the costs of war or the prospect of infrastructure being targeted.

"Officials must not retreat from the legitimate rights of the Islamic nation under the pretext of economic problems, fear of the costs of war or strikes on infrastructure, and they must not continue the path of negotiations and the memorandum with the infidels any further," Arafi said in a statement.
