Shares of EQ Resources in Sydney surged 34% on Monday following news of the transaction, which is valued at about 190 million AUD ($133 million) based on Friday's close. The deal covers 862.1 million shares and 35.6 million options.

Forrest's most likely reasoning for the deal is that EQ Resources controls one of the largest operating tungsten platforms outside China. Tungsten is a critical metal used in armor-piercing munitions, aerospace components, cutting tools, electronics, and semiconductor manufacturing.

Bloomberg noted that, outside of China, Australia has the world's largest tungsten reserves, accounting for about 80% of global production.

Prices of tungsten in Europe reached a new all-time high of $3,025 per ton after a year-long rally, following Beijing's decision to place certain tungsten products on its export control list. Beyond China, stockpiling has accelerated and war demand is driving a squeeze in physical markets.

Police officers were dispatched to the neighbour’s home last week and located the cat inside unharmed. The pet was returned to its owner and police arrested the neighbour.

Global oil prices declined in June after tensions between the United States and Iran eased, putting downward pressure on gasoline prices. However, renewed tensions later pushed oil prices higher.

StatCan said prices for food grew at a slower pace of 3.9 percent on a yearly basis, compared with 4.3 percent in May, but that June was the 17th month in a row that grocery price inflation has outpaced the overall CPI.

The deceleration of grocery prices in June was driven by slower price growth for fresh fruit of 4.3 percent compared to 5.3 percent in May, while the growth of prices for fresh or frozen chicken, bread, and frozen foods remained elevated. Continue…

Inflation-adjusted business investment per Canadian worker fell 18.8 percent from $20,310 in 2014 to $16,493 in 2024, according to findings from the Fraser Institute’s latest study. The United States’s equivalent surged 31.3 percent from $23,263 to $30,555 over the same decade.

The think tank’s study examined business investment per worker from 2007 onward but focused on the 2014–2024 period, when the gap between Canada and the United States widened most sharply.

“I told him, ‘you’ve got to stop these fires from coming in and poisoning our air,’” Trump said during a press scrum after returning from the World Cup game in New Jersey. “Our air has been poisoned.”

Trump hits Canadian autos, alcohol and cheese with 50% tariff

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a new 50% tariff on Canadian goods, accusing Canada of discriminating against American automakers, alcohol producers and dairy exporters.

The new duties will take effect August 19 and apply to a wide range of products, including goods previously entitled to duty-free treatment under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.

Energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals are among the exemptions, according to The Associated Press.

Trump signed three proclamations Monday using Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, an obscure provision allowing the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% against countries found to discriminate against American commerce.

The tariffs imposed under the proclamations will be added to other applicable duties, although products already subject to U.S. national-security tariffs under Section 232 are excluded.

In the first proclamation, Trump accused Ottawa of treating vehicles from other countries more favourably than American-made automobiles.

Canada imposed a 25% tariff on some U.S. vehicles in April 2025 in retaliation for tariffs Trump placed on the Canadian auto industry.

Trump said the Canadian measures caused U.S. vehicle exports to Canada to fall by about 22% between April 2025 and March 2026 compared with the previous year.

He also took aim at Canadian provincial liquor policies.

Beginning in March 2025, provinces and territories pulled American alcoholic beverages from their distribution systems and store shelves in response to Trump’s tariffs and threats against Canada.

Only Alberta and Saskatchewan later lifted those restrictions, according to the White House proclamation.

The White House said American alcohol exports to Canada subsequently fell by 81%, from about $718 million to $137 million.

Trump described the provincial actions as discriminatory because liquor from other countries remained available.

A third proclamation targeted Canada’s treatment of American cheese.

Trump argued Canada’s tariff-rate quota system gives European cheese exporters better access to the Canadian market than American producers receive under CUSMA.

The escalation comes one day after Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney sat together at the World Cup final.

A senior Trump administration official said their time together was not a working meeting and the two leaders did not negotiate over the new tariffs.

The administration said Canada was being punished in part because it was one of the few countries, along with China, to retaliate against Trump’s earlier trade measures.

Trump has separately directed his officials to examine whether Canada should face additional tariffs because smoke from Canadian wildfires has crossed into the United States and damaged American air quality.

Those potential wildfire-related tariffs were not included in Monday’s proclamations.

Carney’s government had not issued a public response to the new tariffs as of Monday 5:30 pm EST.

A 2005 ruling by Ontario Court of Justice Justice Bruce Duncan exempting a convicted child pornography offender from Canada's National Sex Offender Registry, became the leading precedent for a series of decisions that narrowed Parliament's sex offender registration law, according to the Supreme Court of Canada.

In R. v. Have (2005 ONCJ 27), Justice Duncan declined to order a man convicted of two counts of possessing child pornography to register under the newly enacted Sex Offender Information Registration Act (SOIRA).

At the time, SOIRA generally required convicted sex offenders to register with police, but judges retained discretion to exempt offenders if the impact of registration would be "grossly disproportionate" to the public interest.

Justice Duncan found the case qualified for that exemption.

The court accepted evidence that the offender did not present the type of risk associated with a "predatory stranger" and had not demonstrated a propensity to commit contact sexual offences. Justice Duncan concluded the benefit of placing him on the registry was "negligible," while the impact on the offender's liberty and privacy was "substantial."

The contract would run for an initial three-year term, with the option for McMaster to renew it annually for up to two additional years at the university's discretion.

The procurement aligns with McMaster's broader international recruitment strategy. The university says its international recruitment marketing team promotes McMaster to prospective students in more than 200 countries, while its global engagement strategy states that roughly 15 percent of undergraduate students come from outside Canada and emphasizes attracting international students as a strategic priority.

McMaster also maintains dedicated programs for Chinese students and researchers, including partnerships with the China Scholarship Council and Chinese-language recruitment materials aimed at prospective applicants.
