City agencies are responding after a car fell into a sinkhole early Saturday morning in the area of North Chester Street and Ashland Avenue. Baltimore Police Department says they received a call reporting the incident shortly after midnight. Police say a 50-year-old woman was able to safely exit the vehicle without injury. The Department of Public Works says crews have responded to the location and are working to repair a broken 12-inch water main. DPW officials say the conditions and service impacts are still being assessed.

UK Terror Police Admit ‘No Evidence’ for Charges over Supposed Far-Right Plot on Islamic Event

The Metropolitan Police have announced that it has found “no evidence” to charge anyone in connection with a widely reported alleged far-right plot against an Islamic event in Suffolk.

Last week, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) shut down the UK Ijtima event at Shrubland Hall at the Barham country estate in Suffolkover a potential threat against the Muslim gathering, which drew thousands of people.

Thirteen people were arrested throughout the week amid claims of a potential extreme right-wing plot against the Islamic event, while police conducted raids on properties and vehicles, seizing dozens of electronic devices in the process.

The story was quickly seized upon by the left-wing Labour Party government, with outgoing Prime Minister Sir KierStarmer declaring that he would “not tolerate any attacks on our Muslim communities, or any form of anti-Muslim hatred.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that the police response had “undoubtably saved lives”.

“I know this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims,” she wrote on X.“We must stand against hatred and we must unite around our shared belief in a country that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.”

However, over the weekend, the Met revealedthat it had not found evidence to charge any of the suspects with a crime in connection with the supposed plot.

One of those arrested has been charged with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon, extendable batons and a stun gun. Yet,police said this was separate from the alleged plan to attack the Islamic event.

On Saturday, eight men were released from custody without charge, while one had been released on bail with conditions pending further enquiries.This came after four others were released without charge earlier in the week.

The announcement from the Methas resulted in some questioning the validity of the initial story, with Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice even suggesting that the arrests may have been made to distractfrom the alleged murder of Brexiteer Ann Widdecombe days earlier.

“So what really happened here? Everyone released, no charges.Was it real, or a deliberate diversion tactic away from the alleged horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe? With a suspect reported to be from the far left?”Tice questioned.

“Counter Terrorism need to update us all urgently,” he added.

In a statement, Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: “This has been a fast-moving investigation after we became aware of information to indicate there was a potential threat towards the Islamic event over the course of last weekend.

“Since then, we have made extensive enquiries, but at this time, we have found no evidence to support anyone being charged with any offences linked to the alleged threat.

“While I know this may still be very concerning to the public and particularly to those in the Muslim community, I want to reassure them that our enquiries are ongoing. Should we identify any potential offences or threats to the public then we will not hesitate to take further action.

“I want to reiterate my thanks to the event organisers and to the local community in the area for their continued support and understanding as our investigation continues.”

Capitol agenda: Johnson’s rocky sprint to recess

A packed schedule could change if Speaker Mike Johnson can’t tamp down multiple flare-ups of frustration in his ranks.

Four days remain until House lawmakers are scheduled to leave for summer recess, but GOP leaders are in the opposite of vacation mode.

This week’s packed floor schedule includes: the annual defense policy package; a bill to fund the government beyond the midterms; a budget resolution to unlock the reconciliation process; and a GOP-led stock trading ban measure.

All that could change, of course, if Speaker Mike Johnson can’t tamp down multiple flare-ups of frustration in his ranks.

We’ll be watching if Johnson has appeased hard-liners with Tuesday’s Judiciary markup of border security legislation,after they froze all business on the House floor for weeks, including the defense policy bill(more on that below).

President Donald Trump’s renewed pressure campaign topass the SAVE America Act elections bill and more deaths of U.S. service members in the Iran war may also shift some Republicans’ political calculus this week.

Here’s what we’re watching for the floor:

—NDAA: House Rules meets at 2 p.m. Monday on the must-pass annual defense policy bill, Leo Shane III and Connor O’Brien write in.

Johnson will allow a series ofsocially conservative floor amendments to win over hard-liner votesas Democrats signal more opposition to the usually bipartisan bill.

On Friday, House Armed Services ranking member Adam Smith flipped and sayshe now plans to oppose the National Defense Authorization Act on the floor.

Should it pass, though,the defense bill will be merged with the SAVE America Act, although the Senate is likely to sweep away those provisions along with many of the hard-liner amendments.

—GOVERNMENT FUNDING:Johnson wants the Houseto pass a “clean” government funding bill that would float federal operations until Dec. 4— hoping to instigate a staredown with Democrats after two record-breaking shutdowns this Congress.

The gambit, however, risks alienating members of his own party who want the partisan elections overhaul bill attached to all legislation.

But so far hard-liners, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris,are signaling they’ll let it slide this time.

Harris warned Mia, though, that “if Democrats want to shut down the government,” then it’s time to play hardball and fund the TSA, FAA and military salaries through reconciliation.

—BUDGET RESOLUTION: Leaders are putting a $95 billion fiscal blueprint on the floor thatincludes a watered-down version of the elections billas well as Iran war and farm aid funds.

Rep. Thomas Massie told us last week he’s “probably a no” on the resolution, and Rep. Warren Davidson hinted he and others could tank the effort —though Davidson cautioned there’s still “a lot of time” to make a deal.

Deficit hawks are irked the bill wouldn’t be entirely paid for, though, and ultraconservatives don’t love that the SAVE America Act isn’t included in full.

—STOCK TRADING: Republicans will likely have to rely on their own members to get this GOP-led bill over the finish line. And,GOP leaders are planning to link it to a separate measure that would implement stricter voter ID lawsmany Democrats have opposed.

—RON JOHNSON FACES A ROCKY BUDGET REALITY: Sen. Ron Johnson is jumping directly into a legislative trainwreck. How Communist China Captured Washington’s Pork Lobby – and Turned it Against American Farmers 7/19/26 1/2

As Congress considers the pork lobby’s number one priority in this upcoming Farm Bill, theso-called “Save Our Bacon Act” (SOB Act), lawmakers should ask one question: who does that lobby actually represent?

You knowSmithfield Foods, the seemingly all-American brand behind Nathan’s Famous hot dogs?Recent filings show the company is actually 86.9 percent Chinese-owned.

Smithfield’smajority owner is WH Group, a conglomerate linked to the Chinese Communist Partythat is theworld’s largest pork producer and that controls over a quarter of America’s pork industry.

On WH Group’s behalf,Smithfield helps govern and bankroll the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), Washington’s powerful pork lobby.

Although the Pork Council claims to be the voice of American farmers,it is China’s WH Group that has the most to gain from the lobby’s signature bill. Themeasure would nullify state laws setting minimum standards for how farm animals are raised, most notably banning “gestation crates,” metal cages barely larger than a pig’s bodyin which a mother pig cannot turn around for nearly her entire life. Thousands of small- and mid-size American farmers have invested to meet these standards because they offer a rare lifeline in today’s consolidated industry.Without them, the critical market these producers have carved out will collapse.

That’s exactly what China and its Washington lobby want, and the motivation is right out in the open. The Communist Party’s own China Weeklycelebrated the SOB Act as a measure that “will significantly increase China’s share of the U.S. pork market.” The same article complained that U.S. state laws “tend to favor smaller farms in the United States and disadvantage multinational foreign-funded enterprises, weakening the ability of Chinese pork enterprises to operate efficiently.” In other words, the Communist Party’s own press says this bill will take market share from American family farms and hand it to Chinese companies.

Dozens of House Republicans have already seen through it, calling the provision sweeping federal overreach that would strip states of authority, override the choices of their own citizens, and help China finish the takeoverit started when it bought Smithfield in 2013.

To make matters worse, alegislative analysis found the SOB Act would erase virtually all state pre-harvest farming standards, including laws that protect livestock,and all of us, from diseases like avian flu and invasive pests like screwworms.

To understand why the NPPC would champion such a dangerous bill, look no further than its governing body. A Smithfield employee has held a seat on NPPC’s board every year since 2012. In six of those years, including 2026, China’s U.S. division has held two seats at once, something no other company has ever done. Smithfield employees have also served on the nominating committee that vets every candidate for that board. And under the NPPC’s own funding formula, its largest producer is almost certainly its largest funder.

Who stands behind Smithfield is no mystery either. As the Daily Caller reported, WH Group’s chairman and four top executives are Chinese Communist Party members, and at the company’s Chinese flagship, Party members make up 85% of senior executives. The chairman himself is a former People’s Liberation Army soldier who spent twenty years in China’s National People’s Congress.

The state-owned Bank of China financed Smithfield’s 2013 takeover with a $4 billion loan, and the acquiring company’s own president said the government backed the deal “with preferential policy, as well as investment.” This is the company that benefits if the SOB Act becomes law.

The family farmers the NPPC claims to speak for want no part of this. Independent hog farmers traveled to Washington last fall to oppose the bill their own lobby calls its top priority. “They’re saying that they represent us all, but they do not represent us at all,” Pennsylvania hog farmer Brent Hershey stated.

The same could be said for the lawmakers who do the NPPC and WH Group’s bidding, and they can’t claim ignorance. For years, Congress has held hearings on Chinese influence over American farmland, food processing, and supply chains. Members even created a select committee dedicated to confronting the Chinese Communist Party.

But one of this committee’s members, Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa, is a lead sponsor of the SOB Act and has accepted over $27,000 in campaign contributions from the NPPC and Smithfield. All the while, Hinson talks tough on China: “We must block the CCP from…exerting control over our food supply,” she warns, and “we can’t sit on our hands as the CCP works to infiltrate our agriculture industry.”

Imagine a Cold War committee created to take on the Soviet Union whose own members warned of communist infiltration by day and cashed checks from Moscow’s American subsidiary by night. Hinson says we can’t sit on our hands while the CCP infiltrates American agriculture, but hers are full of Smithfield’s checks.

Hinson should explain this hypocrisy to her voters, and so should Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, who have repeatedly postured about the threat Chinese control of the U.S. food supply poses while sponsoring the SOB Act and accepting over $25,000 each from the NPPC and WH Group’s U.S. branch.

Congress has a choice. It can reject the SOB Act and side with the farmers and voters it actually answers to, or it can hand the biggest prize in the Farm Bill to a lobby whose most powerful member answers to Beijing.

Before they call the roll, legislators should answer the question: when the “voice of America’s pork producers” speaks, is it in English or Mandarin?

EU facing revolt over new Russia sanctions – FT

Several EU member states have demanded exemptions from the bloc’s latest proposed Russia sanctions package, or blocked some of its measures outright, the Financial Times reported on Monday, citing diplomats.

Greece, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Portugal all repordedly asked for changes, reflecting growing resistance to Brussels’ sanctions attempts, as more member states balk at measures they believe would damage their own national economies and corporate interests.

Several rounds of talks last week failed to produce agreement on the EU’s proposed 21st sanctions package targeting Russia’s energy, financial, crypto, trade, and fisheries sectors. It would also ban Russians who have served in the military since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022 from entering the bloc.

New sanctions require unanimous backing, but EU governments are becoming less willing to accept the economic costs of sanctions to back Kiev, five diplomats involved in the negotiations told the outlet.

“The moral imperative is functioning less and less,” one diplomat said. “Capitals all agree on tough rhetoric and talk of solidarity, but then it all melts away.”

Greece has reportedly refused to approve the package unless it secures an exemptionallowing its shipping companies to continue transporting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to non-EU countries. Athens argues that a ban would disproportionately hurt Greek shipping interests, including Dynagas, owned by billionaire George Prokopiou.

Dynagas has transported more than 30 million tons of LNG from Russia’s Yamal project since 2022, with cargoes estimated to be worth more than $24 billion, the FT said citing energy analytics firm Kpler.

Dynagas has argued that the proposed restrictions could force it to sell its specialized ice-class LNG carriers once the EU ban on Russian gas takes effect in January 2027. The company said the vessels were built specifically to serve Russia’s Yamal LNG project and are tied to long-term contracts running until 2065 that were signed well before the Ukraine conflict.It warned that banning EU companies from transporting Russian LNG to third countries would weaken Europe’s shipping industrywhile benefiting foreign competitors without achieving its stated geopolitical goals.

Portugal and Germany have also sought to remove a proposed ban on Russian fish imports to protect domestic processors, while France and Italy reportedly want to soften restrictions on issuing EU visas to Russian military personnel.

“It is a major crisis for the whole sanctions approach,” one diplomat told the FT. “If everyone demands derogations and loopholes, then at the end of the process, each package of sanctions is just an empty box.”

Since 2022, the EU has adopted 20 rounds of sanctions on Russia. However, diplomats told the outlet that resistance to the latest package is stronger than at any point since the campaign began,reflecting growing concern among governments over the impact on their own economies.

Moscow has insisted the sanctions will not change Russia’s course, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskovsaying the country has adapted to the restrictions while Europe is bearing part of the economic cost.

Germany’s prolonged energy crisis was caused by the loss of Russian gas supplies, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has admitted.

German industry has been hit particularly hard by soaring energy costs, which are now the third-highest in the world after those in the UK and Japan. Once Europe’s industrial powerhouse, Germany abandoned cheap Russian gas imports in 2022 while phasing out nuclear power in favor of renewables, driving up production costs and accelerating the decline of energy-intensive industries. Moscow has repeatedly said it remains ready to resume gas deliveries through the remaining string of the Nord Stream pipeline, but the offer has received no response from Berlin.

In an interview with ZDF on Sunday, Merz was responding to questions over unfulfilled campaign promises and low public trust in his government. The chancellor argued that Germany now faced “completely different”circumstances, citing the Ukraine conflict, the “challenge” posed by China, and the country’s “ongoing energy crisis due to the lack of Russian gas.”

Germany is facing renewed pressure from soaring fuel costs following the resumption of the US bombing campaign against Iran. Diesel prices jumped 6.7 euro cents within hours on Sunday to €2.30 per liter, adding €3.35 to the cost of filling a 50-liter tank, Bild reported on Sunday. “A trip to the gas station is once again a shock,” the outlet wrote.

Before Germany’s self-imposed Russian energy embargo, Russia supplied 55% of the country’s natural gas imports. Germany now sources its gas from Norway (44%), the Netherlands (24%) and Belgium (21%), with American liquefied natural gas (LNG) accounting for most of the remainder.

Despite the mounting pressure, the EU has ruled out returning to Russian gas. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in March that the bloc would maintain its phaseout even in the event of physical shortages or the threat of power cuts.

Brussels has pledged to end all Russian gas imports by 2027. Russian LNG under long-term contracts, which currently accounts for around 14% of the bloc’s imports, will be banned from January 1, while pipeline gas imports will cease on September 30. Member states will also be required to verify the origin of gas before approving deliveries, with purchases under new short-term LNG contracts already prohibited.

Earlier, Merz told Der Spiegel that Germany’s era of prosperity was over and that maintaining the country’s current standard of living would require painful changes. He argued that Germans had yet to grasp the scale of the global shifts reshaping the country.

The German economy contracted in both 2023 and 2024, its first back-to-back annual decline in more than two decades, and is forecast to grow by just 0.5% this year. Corporate insolvencies also rose by more than 22% in each of those years, according to official data.

Manufacturing has been hit particularly hard, especially the automotive sector. BASF, Bosch, Volkswagen, and more than a dozen other German manufacturers have closed factories since 2022. In June, Volkswagen, the country’s largest automaker, announced four plant closures and up to 100,000 job cuts.

Iran thanks Jordanians for help targeting US forces

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has thanked Jordanian civilians and military personnel for allegedly providing the “accurate intelligence” it used to strike US forces and aircraft stationed in the kingdom.

In a statement carried by Tasnim on Monday, the IRGC claimed that ballistic missiles targeted US C-17 military transport aircraft and P-8 command-and-control planes at Aqaba Airport in southern Jordan during its latest round of retaliatory attacks. Several of the aircraft suffered “heavy damage,” according to the statement.

The IRGC credited Jordanian informants with helping Iran target 20 hangars housing US forces in the Al-Azraq area during an earlier attack. It claimed that the facilities were destroyed and that dozens of American personnel were killed, suggesting that even one of Washington’s closest regional allies is no longer a secure rear base.

The IRGC expressed gratitude to what it called the “honorable people and courageous military personnel of Jordan” for their “sincere cooperation and precise information,” which it said had enabled Iranian forces to accurately identify American military assets.

The US previously acknowledged that an Iranian attack on one of its military facilities in Jordan on Friday left two American service members dead and one missing, as well as several others injured. Washington has not, however, confirmed any damage at Aqaba Airport or the larger casualty figures claimed by Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly claimed to have destroyed US aircraft and other military equipment during strikes on bases in Jordan, while American media have reported that several days of attacks had resulted in dozens of service members sustaining injuries and damaged multiple helicopters.

US officials cited by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have also voiced concern that Iranian missiles are becoming increasingly effective at penetrating American air defenses because of their speed and maneuverability.

Before the renewed conflict, the Pentagon reportedly relocated some troops and aircraft from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to Jordan and Israel, which were considered less vulnerable because of their greater distance from Iran.

Tehran has carried out near-daily missile and drone attacks on US military facilities across Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Iraq, and Syria in retaliation for the unprovoked US-Israeli war on Iran, which resumed after a temporary ceasefire collapsed earlier this month.

Israel spent over $45 million on AI propaganda campaign targeting US – WSJ

The country has launched a project which generates millions of texts promoting the country’s objectives

Israel is spending tens of millions of dollars on anAI-powered media campaign aimed at improving its image and influencing public opinionin the US, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

The country’s standing among Americans has deteriorated in recent years.Some 60% of US adults held an unfavorable view of Israel in March, up from 53% last year and 42% in 2022, according to Pew Research Center.

According to an investigation published by the WSJ on Saturday, millions of AI-generated messages have been sent to Americansin recent months from senders using names such as Emma, Sarah, and John.

The messages claim to come from a group called Friends for Peace and ask recipients questions such as “How do you think the US and Israel’s peace talks with Iran will impact global security?”The newspaper said it could find no nonprofit or company registered under that name.

The texts reportedly form part of a broader contract worth morethan $45 million which was awarded to an operation led by Brad Parscale, a former campaign manager for US President Donald Trump. Sparkfire, the company operating the text campaign, had received $6.5 million by mid-May.

Parscale’s team has also created pro-Israel websites and online posts designed to generate more favorable answers about the country from AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude.

Last year, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said West Jerusalem had allocated more than $700 million in its 2026 budget to improve Israel’s image worldwide and “shape consciousness.”

At least six companies have been retained for the work in the US, while around three dozen people have registered as foreign agents on Israel’s behalf, according to the newspaper.

The US campaign also reportedly includes over $500,000 in advertising through conservative broadcaster Salem Media, where Parscale serves as chief strategy officer. Salem denied paying its hosts to promote particular positions.

In an interview released Wednesday with podcaster Joe Rogan,US Vice President J.D. Vance accused some members of the Israeli government of attempting to manipulate American public opinion to keep the Iran conflict going “indefinitely.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry did not respond to the WSJ’s requests for comment.

‘Poor Little Grandma’ Green Card Holder Arrested by ICE Revealed to Be Convicted Meth Trafficker

Following public attention and concern from residents, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security(DHS) released new details about a woman who was arrested on July 15by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chaparral, Texas.

In a video posted to social media, the incident suggested the woman, ‘a poor little grandma,’ went into a local convenience store asking for help because she was ‘being followed’ by ICE.

Agents arrived at the location and were seen speaking with the woman before being arrested.

The woman was identified by DHSas Martha Sias, a Mexican national and green card holder.

Sias on Wednesday, July 15, during what theagency described as a targeted immigration enforcement operation.

According to a statement from DHS,Sias is a convicted methamphetamine trafficker.

Despite how local news attempted to frame the arrest, DHS told reporter Ali Bradley, ” On July 15, ICE conducted a targeted immigration enforcement operation and arrested Martha Sias, a criminal alien from Mexico who is a convicted meth trafficker.”

“Martha Sias is a green card holder who is amendable to removal proceedings because of her criminal history. She will receive full due process and has an upcoming hearing.”

“Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke a green card if our laws are broken and abused.”

“Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, ICE is targeting the worst of the worst. Nearly 70% of ICE arrests are of illegal aliens charged or convicted of a crime in the U.S.”

KFOX14/CBS4 obtained the complaint affidavit that details Sias’s drug arrest in January 2022.

According to the documents, on January 12, 2022, at around 1 p.m., Sias crossed from Ciudad Juarez to El Paso through the Paso Del Norte border bridge, driving a maroon Ford Expedition SUV with her husband.

Officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection said they noticed something was off with the SUV’s rear door panels after a portable X-ray scan.

Then, after officers interview them regarding where they were coming from and what they were bringing in from Mexico, the documents state that Sias told officersshe had gone to Juarez to sign up some customers for OMNILIFE supplements, which she said she sold, and denied bringing anything illegal into the country.

However, according to the documents,after a second inspection, officers discovered 18 bundles of meth (about 20 lbs.) hidden inside the two rear door panels.

According to the court records, Sias pleaded guilty to manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance in October 2025.

She was sentenced to 10 years’ probation with 400 hours of community service.(why probation?)
