Too much of the world has become too dependent upon others in the last 100 years, and we're suffering a serious deficiency of novel material with which to sustain societies, as we drag the same dead horses out day after day, hour after hour, to sate consumer appetites.
It wasn't terribly long ago that people had to either explore the world beyond their front door, or actually create things themselves, to encounter novelty.
The centralization and solidification of the world is slowly choking it to death.
