Senate Democrat Calls Out CBS News ‘Senior Management’ in Interview on CBS

A Senate Democrat — for the second time in four days — criticized CBS’s coverage of President Donald Trump’s primetime speech on CBS’s own air.

Speaking with Margaret Brennan on CBS’s Face the Nation Sunday,Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) called out network leadership for opting to air Trump’s speech about election integrity — in which numerous fact checkers found the president made a bevy of false claims.

“There are so many absurdities and falsehoods in Trump’s Thursday night speech,” Warner said.“And I’m glad that most media treated it not as serious news — and I know some folks at your network, the journalists I have huge respect for. I was disappointed that your senior management made the decision to cover it as news.”

The senator did not name any specific senior management figures but was almost certainly talking about CBS News Editor in Chief Bari Weiss — who has faced constant attacks from critics who believe she is aligning the network closely with the Trump agenda.

CBS was the only one of the three broadcast networks to air the president’s speech live. CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil prefaced the address with a heavy disclaimer in which he said, “much of what the president had said on this topic has been false.”

“There is an argument that it’s irresponsible to air the president’s speech tonight,” Dokoupil added Thursday. “But this speech will be made, it will be news, and it’s our job to cover the news. And so we are. My CBS News colleagues and I are reporting tonight along with you to make sense of it as you will, and we will.”

Dokoupil also did a comprehensive fact check after the speech, and even cut it off as the president was attacking NBC and ABC.He also invited Warner to join the coverage, and the senator was not shy about attacking CBS on its own air — just as he did on Sunday.

“I was embarrassed that the President of the United States went before our whole country, and networks like yours carried this as news, as opposed to a rehash of falsehoods,” Warner said. “And it is incumbent upon you and any responsible journalist to push back on these falsehoods.”

“You are calling for context and analysis and pushback,” Dokoupil replied. “You are on the show right now giving it, and acting as though it’s not happening.So I just want to underscore that the reason you’re on is because we agree, you and I, that this is a vitally, vitally important topic. And the president has a terrible track record on it, as we said at the top and as we’ve been trying to buttress and fact check and give context and analysis for throughout.”

Warner, on Sunday, made clear he believes Trump is trying to sow doubt in the results of the 2026 elections— in which many observers believe Republicans could lose control of the House, and perhaps even the Senate.

“This was the opening shot, the opening shot of trying to undermine Americans confidence that their votes will be actually counted and mean something,” Warner said. “I fear as well that if he tries to pull something that could potentially — he’s not ruled out bringing ICE to the polls. He’s not even ruled out the idea of trying bar certain voting machines.”

Appeals court gives Trump temporary win in mail-in voting fightWith 108 days to go until the midterms,a federal appeals court in D.C. handed the Trump administration a temporary win, pausing a ruling that blocked a mail ballot restriction.

A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., handed the Trump administration a temporary win on Friday in its attempt to increase federal oversight of elections.

In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals put on hold a lower court ruling, which had blocked the U.S. Postal Service from attempting to restrict mail-in voting.

However, the Trump administration does not yet have a green light to move forward nationwide with the proposed rule. A separate judge in Massachusetts blocked the policy last month in the 23 states and the District of Columbia which brought the lawsuit and that injunction still stands for now.

The cases center on a proposed rule from the U.S. Postal Service that sought to compel states to create lists of approved voters, as well as impose stricter regulations on mail-in ballots.

Last month, Postmaster General David Steiner told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that under the proposed rule, the Postal Service would refuse to deliver mail-in ballots in states that do not turn over their voter lists.

"Yes or no – if a state refuses to turn their absentee voter list over to the federal government, will the Postal Service still mail their ballots under this proposed rule?" asked Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich.

"Under our proposed regulation, no. We would tell the state that we need the manifest," Steiner said.

The NAACP, which brought the lawsuit, had previously sued the Postal Service in 2020, seeking to challenge delays in delivering mail-in ballots heading into that year's presidential election. The two sides settled in 2021, with the Postal Service agreeing to "prioritiz[e] . . . the timely delivery of Election Mail" for every national election through 2028.

In Friday's ruling, the appeals court said the Trump administration is likely to succeed because the lawsuit is premature since the rule itself is not yet finalized and not covered by a 2021 settlement between the NAACP and Postal Service.

The appeals court also said the Trump administration demonstrated they would be irreparably harmed if the Postal Service can't finalize and implement the rule in time for the midterms.

"In this context, 'there can be no do over' once the election occurs," the ruling said.

While the Trump administration cannot yet move forward with the new rule, the D.C. Circuit's ruling signals that the Trump administration may be able convince other appeals courts to let them implement the policy while the lawsuits move through the courts – potentially past the November elections.

In a statement, a spokesperson for U.S. Postal Service said, "Because of pending litigation, we have no response to offer on any questions related to the Executive Order or the proposed rule."
