Saturday, July 10: The weekend was spent with Christiane Amanpour, James Rubin, Anthony, and Carole Radziwill. “We spent the days on the beach and had fun dinners,” Carole recalled. “Except for the dying, it was a weekend like any other, with great friends and laughs and good food.” Christiane and Jamie provided them with a break and lightened the moment.
Evening: The couples headed out in “the Goat”, John’s Pontiac GTO convertible to go for drinks at a couple of island bars, the Wharf and Lamppost. Anthony did not join them because he was too weak. For once people left them alone.
"Kissy, are you pregnant?" John asked, as they sat drinking margaritas.
"No, why?" Christiane asked
"Because you're not smoking," John said.
"We're trying."
"Oh, don't get pregnant, Kissy," Carolyn said jokingly to Christiane, "or I'll have to get pregnant."
At the end of the weekend, John hit the road again in search of a new publishing partner to replace Hachette. During his travels, John made sure to call Carole late every night to check in on Anthony.
