U.S. Attorney Pirro’s office announces seizure of over $25M in cryptocurrency tied to global fraud
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said Tuesday that it has seized over $25 million in cryptocurrency linked to multiple international fraud investigations.
Federal prosecutors filed five civil forfeiture complaints Tuesday seeking forfeiture of cryptocurrency taken by the Secret Service Washington Field Office in five probes involving launderers with IP addresses in Cambodia, China and Malaysia.
The victims were located in Canada and the U.S., including two in the National Capital Region. The federal government defines the region as the District of Columbia; Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland; and Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, plus the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church and Manassas, all in Virginia.
The biggest case involved an online romance scam with over 200 victims that the Secret Service learned about following a tip from an unspecified private sector partner. The government is seeking a forfeiture of over $12 million seized in the case.
The second-biggest seizure came from a network of virtual currency wallets thought to be transferring illegal proceeds from over 270 victim transactions on fake investment platforms, which the Secret Service learned about from Canadian authorities. The U.S. government is seeking a forfeiture of over $10.4 million.
The third-biggest case involved a victim in the National Capital Region who in March transferred money to a fake investment account, with a second victim identified once the investigation began. The government is seeking a forfeiture of nearly $2.4 million seized in the case.
The next-biggest case after that involved another victim in the National Capital Region who in May reported the fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scheme after being prevented from withdrawing money. Investigators tracked down the victim’s investments, and the government is seeking a forfeiture of over $1.23 million.

RFK Jr. withholding more than $1B from CA, MN over ‘fraud’ allegations
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is targeting two Democratic-led states, announcing the federal government will withhold more than $1 billion in federal Medicaid funding from California and Minnesota over what it says are widespread fraud concerns.
He says the administration is pausing more than $867 million for California and roughly $200 million for Minnesota until the states can prove the claims in question are legitimate. Kennedy accused the Biden administration and Democratic leaders in both states of failing to protect taxpayer money, saying, “Instead of protecting your money, they open the floodgates to theft. They dismantle basic program integrity and oversight.”
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz defended the funding freeze, saying these states are “signature and significant outliers.”

US judge sets June 2027 trial date for Venezuela's Maduro

Maduro and his wife, wearing beige prison garb, appeared during a hearing lasting about 20 minutes in Manhattan federal court before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in one of the most consequential criminal cases in recent U.S. history.

Seattle judge fired by Trump an hour after being sworn in as US attorney files lawsuit
SEATTLE, Wash. (KOMO) — Former King County Superior Court Judge Roger Rogoff has sued President Donald Trump and senior Justice Department officials, arguing his firing less than an hour after being sworn in as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington violated federal law and the U.S. Constitution.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Seattle, asks a federal judge to declare Rogoff's removal unlawful, reinstate him as the district's top federal prosecutor and block the Trump administration from recognizing anyone else as the U.S. attorney until a Senate-confirmed successor is appointed.

The legal challenge stems from an unprecedented standoff that began July 15, whenall 17 judgesof the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington unanimously appointed Rogoff under a federal statute allowing district courts to fill prolonged vacancies in U.S. attorney positions.
Rogoff was sworn in that morning but received an email from the White House less than an hour later informing him he had been removed from office. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche later publicly confirmed the dismissal, arguing the president had the authority to fire the court-appointed prosecutor.
