The Large Magellanic Cloud
Have you ever seen another galaxy with your own eyes? The featured image shows the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), one of the closest neighbors of our Milky Way. If you are anywhere south of latitude 20° N (but the further south, the better), you can see it with the unaided eye if you go to a dark sky location, away from big cities and light polution. It is a dwarf irregular galaxy about 163,000 light-years away, and a member of our Local Group of galaxies. Despite being small, with a total mass approximately equivalent to 10% - 20% of the mass of the Milky Way, the LMC is very actively forming stars. This is likely due in part to the gravitational push and pull of tides caused by the Milky Way on the LMC. Some astronomers have predicted that it will collide with the Milky Way in in about 2 billion years.

The Southern Delta Aquariids reach their peak around July 30, but a nearly full Moon will wash out all but the brightest meteors.
Here is why the dark mornings the week before are the better bet, and why no one is quite sure which comet the shower even comes from.
One of summer’s steadiest meteor showers reaches its peak around July 30, and in 2026 almost no one will see it at its best. The Southern Delta Aquariids are faint to begin with, and this year their maximum falls within two days of a full Moon that floods the whole sky with light.
The result is a shower worth planning around rather than showing up for. The peak date on the calendar is close to the worst night of the month to look, and the better strategy is to watch the dark mornings the week before, when the Moon is out of the way and the same meteors are already flying.
A faint shower, and a Moon two days off full
The Southern Delta Aquariids run from about mid-July through late August every year, the debris of an orbit the Earth crosses on its way toward the more famous Perseids.
According to NASA, the shower is active from mid-July and visible into late August, with the strongest rates concentrated near the end of July. The American Meteor Society lists the 2026 maximum on the night of July 30 to 31.
The meteors themselves are modest. They enter the atmosphere at about 41 kilometers per second, a medium speed, and tend to be dim, with few of the bright fireballs that make other showers easy to catch.
Their radiant, the point they appear to stream from, sits near the star Skat in the constellation Aquarius, low in the southern sky for most northern observers.
That low radiant is why the shower has always favored the Southern Hemisphere and the southern latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, where Aquarius climbs higher.
This year the timing is unkind. The full Moon falls on July 29, and by the shower’s peak a night or two later it is still a waning gibbous roughly 97 to 98 percent lit, sitting in neighboring Capricornus and washing out the sky for most of the night.
NASA puts the problem plainly on its own shower page: if the Moon is up, the Delta Aquariids will be all but impossible to see.
The peak date is the wrong night to circle
The instinct with any meteor shower is to mark the peak and wait for it. For the Delta Aquariids in 2026, that instinct works against you. The shower has no sharp spike anyway.
It rambles along at close to full strength for a week or more on either side of the maximum, which means the meteors flying on the moonlit peak night are also flying on the darker mornings before it.
Those earlier mornings are the opening. In the days leading up to July 29, the Moon rises later and sets earlier in the small hours, leaving a truly dark window before dawn.
The radiant climbs highest around 2 a.m. local time, so the stretch from roughly 2 a.m. to the first light of dawn is when the most meteors fall, moonlight or not.
The viewing method is the same one NASA recommends for any faint shower.
Find a spot well away from city lights, lie back so you can take in as much sky as possible, and look about halfway up from the horizon and around 45 degrees away from Aquarius rather than straight at the radiant.
Give your eyes at least half an hour to adjust to the dark, and plan to stay out. Patience does more here than any equipment.

The comet nobody has fully pinned down
Most meteor showers can be traced to a specific parent, the comet or asteroid whose shed dust the Earth plows through. The Delta Aquariids are a genuine exception, and that is part of what makes them interesting.
The long-suspected source is comet 96P/Machholz, a small comet found by amateur astronomer Donald Machholz in 1986, with a nucleus a few kilometers across and an orbit that swings it well inside Mercury’s every five to six years.
NASA lists it as the origin, but adds the word “suspected,” and the American Meteor Society goes further, printing the parent object as “96P/Machholz?” with the question mark intact.
The picture is more tangled the closer you look. In-The-Sky.org, which draws its shower data from the International Meteor Organization, names a different body outright as the likely source: the small SOHO-discovered comet P/2008 Y12. Both candidates belong to the same sprawling family.
Writing for EarthSky, the late comet hunter Don Machholz described the 96P/Machholz Complex as a collection of eight related meteor showers, two comet groups and at least one asteroid, all apparently born from the same original object and now scattered into slightly different orbits.
A modeling study has suggested the specific dust that lights up the Delta Aquariids left its parent roughly 20,000 years ago. In other words, this is old material from a broken and still-debated lineage, which is a large part of why the exact parent has never been settled.
The rate on paper, and the rate overhead
The number attached to this shower is a zenithal hourly rate of about 25, and that figure is an idealized count, not a forecast.
It is how many meteors a single observer would see under a perfectly dark sky with the radiant sitting directly overhead, conditions that essentially never hold in practice.
NASA’s own estimate for what a real observer catches under genuinely dark skies is closer to 7 or 8 an hour.
Layer this year’s Moon on top of that, and the honest expectation for the peak night is a handful of the brightest streaks at most, not a downpour. This is the core of what separates a useful forecast from a disappointing one.
The headline rate is a ceiling measured on paper, and the number overhead is always lower, sometimes far lower once light and a low radiant are accounted for. Anyone told to expect dozens of meteors on July 30 is being set up to feel cheated.
The shower is still worth chasing. It just rewards a particular kind of chase: a dark site, an early morning before the Moon reasserts itself, and the patience to wait out a slow, thin drizzle of meteors.
If this year disappoints, August is already waiting
The Delta Aquariids do not end at their peak. They keep drifting for weeks, thinning out through early August, right as the Perseids ramp up toward their own maximum on the night of August 12 to 13.
That shower peaks under a new Moon this year, in a sky as dark as it gets, and a stray Delta Aquariid or two will still be mixed in among the Perseids for anyone watching, distinguishable by whether the streak traces back to the south or the northeast.
There is company at the end of July as well.
The Alpha Capricornids peak on the same moonlit nights, and though they are sparse, at only about five an hour, they are known for slow, bright fireballs that can punch through moonlight better than the Delta Aquariids ever will.
For the next few weeks, in other words, the sky keeps offering chances. The trick in 2026 is simply to take them when the Moon is down.

NASA, DOD and others join Energy Department-led Genesis Mission

There are now 20 federal agencies on board with the Genesis Mission as a whole-of-government approach takes shape.
The Genesis Mission is expanding beyond the Department of Energy to include 20 federal agencies that are bringing a combined commitment of more than $5 billion and a range of challenges to tackle.
The Genesis Mission is a DOE-led effort to combine the advancements in AI, quantum and high-performance computing to stand up supercomputers, launch a national platform and double the productivity of the country’s research-and-development budget.
The federal agencies enlisting in the initiative include the departments of Defense, Health and Human Services, Transportation, and Interior, as well as NASA and the National Science Foundation.
The expansion was announced Wednesday at the Genesis Mission 2026 Summit in Washington, D.C., with several agency leads in attendance.
“There’s a tremendous amount of overlap and opportunity for coordination across a range of departmental agencies that have biotech and health-focused missions,” Ethan Klein, U.S. chief technology officer and an associate director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters at the event. “It’s been something that’s been in development for a number of months.”
An initial set of 26 national challenges was unveiled in February as a “direct call to action” to industry, researchers and other innovators. The list has now grown to 33 challenges, including subsets of existing ones and some that are wholly new.
Some of the new challenges include accelerating the design of weapons components with agentic workflows, scaling biological discoveries via data and autonomous experimentation, and mining decades of space data with agentic AI.
While the Genesis Mission has primarily been the focus of DOE, a whole-of-government approach is taking shape now that additional agency partners are jumping on board.
The agencies are putting money behind the effort. DOD, for example, is on track to commit over $200 million in funding to the Genesis Mission across fiscal 2026, and more than $1.3 billion in the next fiscal year.
“Those are really big numbers that we’re proud of because the collaboration between DOE and Genesis and the department is going to be so important when you think about things like quantum computing, biomanufacturing dynamics,” Emil Michael, DOD under secretary of war for research and engineering, said during a panel discussion.
Agencies are expecting the investments will lead to results. Michael said DOD is particularly interested in quantum and digital twins.
“There’s a lot of weaknesses in our defense industrial base and the broader American supply chain because of our outsourcing,” Michael said. “Instead of trying to replicate the old methods that have been done before, we have new methods.”
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the expertise coming from agencies that are involved in the effort will propel the agency forward as it looks to expand discoveries in space.
“Being able to reach beyond the limitations of chemical propulsion… would certainly be a component of our Genesis Mission strategy,” Isaacman said.
The NSF sees its role in the Genesis Mission as far-reaching.
“All the things that you heard are going to be replicated across every other discipline and that’s what we’re going to be doing,” said Brian Stone, chief of staff at NSF.
“Anytime we get this amount of horsepower together and we start pulling in the same direction, amazing things start to happen.”
The agency announced a $400 million-plus investment to set up 20 test beds that will be used for Genesis Mission-related experiments. NSF is also putting $100 million into curating AI-ready datasets that will work similarly to the protein databank.
“We were involved very early on in things like the internet … and we enabled universities and institutions to connect,” Stone said. “It was that connectivity that really catalyzes and that’s exactly what we’re doing with the Genesis Mission right now.”

NASA’s MAVEN Illuminates New Understanding of Auroras at Mars

NASA MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission scientists have uncovered a key puzzle piece in understanding certain types of auroras on Mars, finding that they form in a similar way to Earth-based auroras.
Results published Thursday in Nature Communications show the same mechanism that circulates and catapults charged particles into Earth’s atmosphere is happening at Mars on much smaller scales because of differences in the two planets’ magnetic fields.
The MAVEN spacecraft, in orbit around Mars, experienced a loss of signal with ground stations on Earth on Dec. 6, 2025.
On June 3, NASA declared the mission had concluded after finding the spacecraft to be unrecoverable. However, data from the mission is still being used to inform NASA science and future missions to Mars.
When the Sun’s magnetic field lines get close to Earth’s magnetosphere, the large magnetic bubble protecting the planet, they can reconnect and inject energy and mass throughout Earth's magnetosphere and magnetotail, ultimately firing electrons back into the atmosphere to generate Earth’s auroras.
This process, called the Dungey cycle, drives electrical currents, accelerates charged particles that create auroras, and controls the circulation of plasma in Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere.
This new study shows that a miniature version of the Dungey cycle is happening over Mars’ strong crustal magnetic fields, which gives scientists a better look into the physics of Martian auroras.
“We knew that magnetic reconnection was happening at Mars but did not expect it to be like the Dungey cycle,” said Shaosui Xu, lead author of the study and associate research physicist at the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.
Mars does not have a global magnetic field like Earth. Earth’s magnetic field is created by our planet’s churning core, while Mars has numerous miniature magnetospheres that arise from intensely magnetized crust scattered around the planet.
These regions were formed around 4 billion years ago when lava cooled in the presence of Mars’ ancient global magnetic field, which has since disappeared due to intense solar wind stripping the planet’s atmosphere.
The MAVEN mission has observed highly localized auroras over these crustal fields, similar to Earth’s auroras at the poles, but it wasn’t until now that scientists could fully understand the physics of how they form.
The study used several instruments aboard the MAVEN spacecraft to build up a picture of the Dungey-like behavior: the Magnetometer and Solar Wind Electron Analyzer instruments, which were used to determine the magnetic configuration and derive electrical currents, and the STATIC (Suprathermal and Thermal Ion Composition) instrument, which was used to measure plasma flows in the ionosphere.
“We really pushed the limit of STATIC to get the data we needed,” said Xu. “It was the final piece to the puzzle in understanding these localized auroras.”
The realization that a Dungey-like cycle was happening within these crustal magnetic fields answered the question of how the electrons were being energized to create the auroras.
It also shows that a Dungey-like mechanism can happen on both large and small scales, giving more insight into where in the solar system this process could be taking place.
“This is a remarkable result that changes how we think of Martian auroras and is another important step toward understanding why Mars and Earth have evolved so differently despite being governed by the same underlying physics.”
said Shannon Curry, MAVEN’s principal investigator and a research scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder.
“I am incredibly proud of our team's work on this discovery and excited to uncover new insights into the Red Planet and its evolution.”
By finding out more about this process, scientists also are gaining a better understanding of how the solar environment interacts with the Red Planet as a whole, which is essential for future robotic and crewed missions.
“I remember in graduate school discussing with my advisor how the cycling of crustal magnetic fields could work at Mars,” said Xu. “It’s incredible to be part of the team that found the answer to that question.”

NASA's retired astronauts are hitting the road to get young people to vote: 'one small step for you, and one giant leap for our country.'

Standing in the shadow of the space shuttle Endeavour, a group of retired NASA astronauts announced their plan to travel the country visiting colleges to try to inspire younger generations to get out and vote. This campaign comes as we lead up to the November midterm election.
This past year, a group of retired NASA astronauts teamed up for a single cause: to defend the U.S. constitution. They banded together as part of a non-profit, non-partisan activist organization called Astronauts for America.
So far, they have been speaking out, using their astronaut expertise, platforms, cultural relevance and role model status to speak out in support of "science, evidence-based decision-making, public service and the rule of law," their website reads.
Now, as the group announced at an event at the California Science Center's new air and space center — home to the shuttle Endeavour — they're hitting the road on a campaign tour of colleges called "Vote for Freedom."
"We have to do what we can to ensure that the country makes it through the challenges that we're dealing with here, and that is the message that we're going to be taking to colleges and universities," Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart told Space.com.
"And the agency that we have, the immediate agency, is to vote."
This tour will send astronauts from the group on a four-month jaunt across the country.
Astronauts from the group's more than 100 members will visit state and community colleges, county fairs and even town halls, aiming to reach first-time voters and young people who might be new to voting.
"I'm really excited to look a bunch of younger Americans in the eye and make sure that they know that someone that they can trust said: ;Listen, you matter, because our country matters, and our country needs you,'" former NASA astronaut Cady Coleman told Space.com.
"It's with a uniquely American kind of freedom that we were able to go to the moon, and that same freedom launched the spaceship behind us 25 times into space. Now we see those freedoms under heavy threat," former NASA astronaut Steve Smith said during the event.
"We're seeing chaos instead of community, violence instead of votes, lies instead of laws, and fear instead of fate. That's how democracy and freedom die."
"The mission is all that matters. Now, our country is the mission, and our message is simple: going to the polls is one small step for you, and one giant leap for our country," Smith added.
This campaign leads up to the U.S. midterm elections this November. Midterm elections happen halfway through every four-year presidency. This election allows voters to decide what Congress looks like, and which political party controls Congress.
This can ultimately have a major impact on what laws and decisions are passed moving forward, and whether Congress will reject or change actions by the president moving forward.
And this group of astronauts is serious about the importance of getting people out to exercise their right to vote.
"I'm a child of the segregated South; I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina," former astronaut and NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden, who also serves as a steering committee member for Astronauts for America, said at the event.
"I graduated in 1964. Anybody know what happened in 1964? The Voting Rights Act. So, as a person growing up in my hometown, it wasn't a guarantee that my mom and dad were going to be able to go out and vote.
I look at what's going on today about people trying to restrict the ability of people to cast their ballot. That's not who we are. That's not America."
The group of astronauts recently spoke out about voting access after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of protecting the right to absentee voting, in response to attempts by the Trump administration to place restrictions on the current voting process.
Especially leading up to the November midterms, each vote carries significant weight. And while this nonpartisan group isn't telling you who to vote for, they do think that everyone who can should vote.
"As astronauts, we signed an oath to our nation, and we are mission-oriented people. And our nation is now the mission," Coleman added.
"We need to recognize that everyone's voice is important, and one of the voices that we don't hear very much is the young people.
And we want them to understand that, even though sometimes change can seem daunting, their perspective is really important, and, you know, their voice is important."

Council on Foreign Relations visits Cape Canaveral SFS to discuss plans for the future of launch

On June 26, 2026, the Council on Foreign Relations visited Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Members of the CFR met with Space Force Col. Brian Chatman, commander of Space Launch Delta 45, to discuss the scale of Space Coast operations, spaceport logistics and ways to ensure Cape Canaveral Space Force Station remains the “Premier Gateway to Space.”
The CFR is a nonpartisan, United States-based think tank with its headquarters in New York City. The council focuses on international affairs and their relation to U.S. interests.
Members discuss these global challenges with government officials and scholars to advocate for policy changes that are better postured to address international and national issues.
During their initial meeting, Chatman, along with members of the 45th Civil Engineer Squadron, briefed the group on the Spaceport of the Future program and SLD 45’s readiness to overcome Eastern Range challenges.
The Spaceport of the Future program outlines all infrastructure updates necessary for an impending, increased launch tempo. He also underscored the importance of safety for all personnel on the Eastern Range.
On May 28, 2026, Blue Origin suffered a hotfire test anomaly of their New Glenn rocket. This anomaly resulted in the largest explosion ever documented on the Space Coast. It reinforced that safety procedures are integral to the launch mission.
This anomaly highlights the importance of keep-out areas, raising critical questions about how the spaceport will adapt to larger launch vehicles like New Glenn, a conflict the CFR documented.
“I expect every Airman and Guardian operating on the Space Coast to embrace redundancy and embody resiliency,” said Chatman. “Our personnel have the tools and the skillsets necessary to address any conflict that threatens mission success.”
Additionally, the engagement focused on the intersection of national security policy and financial markets.
The team discussed the strength of the U.S. industrial base and the growing importance of commercial integration, emphasizing how acquisitions and private markets work in tandem to sustain long-term space capabilities.
It proves effective in ensuring the U.S. leads in space superiority. This partnership also guarantees the resilience of space launch on a national level as U.S. Space Force payloads can launch on any privatized launch vehicles.
“As global space competition increases, U.S. space-based assets must develop to outcompete foreign adversaries in this domain,” said Space Force Col. Corey Trusty, military fellow at the CFR.
“It is important that Cape Canaveral SFS efficiently receives the necessary infrastructure upgrades to ensure it remains the most productive spaceport in the world.”
Over lunch, the CFR met with representatives visiting from U.S. Southern Command for a crosstalk opportunity focused on the role SLD 45 and the space domain play with respect to SOUTHCOM and other nations in the Western hemisphere.
These ten representatives were military officers from nine different South American countries. The visitors’ ranks spanned from colonel to major general.
Outside of their lunch with the CFR, these SOUTHCOM representatives toured Cape Canaveral SFS and learned about the personnel and infrastructure systems of the growing U.S. Space Force.

Starship's Thirteenth Flight Test

The thirteenth flight test of Starship is preparing to launch as early as Thursday, July 23. The 90-minute launch window will open at 5:45 p.m. CT.
A live webcast of the flight test will begin about 30 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change, so be sure to check in here and stay tuned to our X account for updates.
The upcoming flight will aim to complete similar objectives targeted on the previous flight test, which debuted the Starship and Super Heavy V3 vehicles, while also carrying next-generation Starlink V3 satellites for the first time.
Watch “Critical Path”, the latest episode in the ongoing Starship series that followed SpaceX engineers and technicians through the final days before launch of the first Starship V3.
The booster’s primary test objective will be executing a successful launch, ascent, stage separation, boostback burn, and landing burn at an offshore landing point in the Gulf of America.
There have been several modifications to hardware and software to address issues seen on the previous flight.
At stage separation on Flight 12, slight differences in engine startup on the ship caused the directional flip of the booster to be off by approximately 90 degrees.
The startup sequence has been modified to be more robust to timing variability and more reliably flip in the desired direction, which is done to increase overall performance.
After stage separation and the flip, the Super Heavy booster attempted its boostback burn. Five of its 33 engines experienced issues when attempting to re-light causing the boostback burn to end early.
The Super Heavy on this upcoming flight has hardware modifications to improve re-light reliability along with updates to engine alarms and aborts to match the conditions seen in the multi-engine flight environment.
The Starship upper stage’s primary objectives include the deployment of 20 Starlink V3 satellites, a relight of a single Raptor engine while in space, and another controlled entry, descent, and splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
There have also been several modifications to Starship’s propulsion system to address the engine out issue experienced on the previous flight.
Approximately 40 seconds after stage separation, Starship lost one of its three Raptor vacuum optimized engines. The vehicle was able to demonstrate its engine out capability and reach its planned suborbital trajectory.
Several hardware and operational modifications have been made to address the interconnected causes with additional reliability improvements planned in upcoming versions of the Raptor engine.
For the first time, Starship will carry V3 Starlink satellites to space, which aim to greatly expand the network's capacity and user speeds.
As part of this initial test, Starship is planned to deploy 20 satellites which will extend solar arrays and antennas and will attempt to connect with the larger Starlink constellation via high-capacity lasers.
The Starlink satellites will be on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship and are expected to demise upon reentry approximately 20 minutes after deployment.
Six of the satellites have been modified with a suite of cameras to scan Starship’s heat shield and transmit imagery down to operators to continue testing methods of analyzing Starship’s heat shield readiness for return to launch site on future missions.
Several tiles on Starship have been painted white to simulate missing tiles and serve as imaging targets in the test.
Several upgrades and experiments related to Starship’s heatshield will also be tested to continue iteration towards a fully and rapidly reusable design.
Multiple tiles will be attached to the metallic side of Starship’s aft flaps along with modified tiles and attachment mechanisms in the heatshield covering the aft skirt to gather flight data on different attachment options.
Finally, Starship’s heatshield will have load sensing tiles to take measurements as the vehicle experiences higher dynamic pressure on ascent than previous flights, putting added stress on the tile attachments in exchange for increased payload to orbit capability.

UK and Switzerland collaborate to shape the future of space-enabled pharmaceuticals

Advances in microgravity research are opening up new possibilities for discovering and manufacturing medicines in space.
With the pharmaceutical industry investing around $300 billion globally in research and development each year, even small improvements in the efficiency, speed or success rate of R&D could deliver significant economic benefits whilst accelerating the development of new medicines.
Realising this opportunity now depends on more than scientific advances alone. It requires stronger evidence of value, greater confidence across the pharmaceutical sector, and clear regulatory pathways that enable companies to develop and commercialise new products.
Those opportunities and challenges were the focus of the inaugural UK-Swiss Microgravity Biopharma Dialogue, where the UK Space Agency joined senior representatives from pharmaceutical companies, regulators, government, academia, investors and the space sector at the British Embassy in Berne.
Bringing together two countries with globally significant life sciences sectors, the dialogue explored demand signals and how government, industry, regulators and investors can work together to address the barriers preventing the wider adoption of microgravity enabled research and manufacturing by the pharmaceutical industry.
Convening healthcare providers, regulators and industry helps ensure that innovation is driven by genuine user needs and underpinned by the evidence needed to support adoption at scale, leading to safe, commercially viable products and services that ultimately improve patient outcomes.
This end-user first lens aligns with the UK’s drive to grow the space sector beyond traditional players and broaden access to new customer markets.
Rather than revisiting the scientific potential of microgravity, discussions focused on what is needed to inform investment decisions across the sector.
Participants identified and explored applications driven by genuine pharmaceutical demand, sought to understand the barriers preventing wider adoption, and agreed the practical steps needed to enable it.
Four themes consistently emerged throughout the dialogue:
Evidence of value: a stronger and broader body of repeatable evidence from microgravity research and manufacturing is needed to consistently demonstrate where it delivers clear advantages over equivalent processes on Earth.
Standards: common approaches to generating, documenting and sharing evidence from microgravity research and manufacturing will help build a stronger shared evidence base for industry, regulators and investors.
Regulatory clarity: greater clarity on how existing regulatory pathways apply to in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing will help build confidence across industry and among investors.
Sector awareness: greater understanding across the pharmaceutical industry of the opportunities, quantifiable benefits and practical limitations of microgravity research and manufacturing will support more informed decision-making.

Enabling innovation through regulatory clarity
During the day, the UK Space Agency chaired a focused session exploring the role of governance and regulation in enabling this emerging market.
Discussions highlighted that regulatory clarity is considered critical to unlocking commercialisation of in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing, so that stakeholders across the value chain have confidence that what is manufactured in space can be safely used on Earth.
Through our Unlocking Space Portfolio, we have been working closely with the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and wider government partners to help provide greater confidence in the regulatory pathway for in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing.
This has included publishing a joint statement with the MHRA, Civil Aviation Authority and Regulatory Innovation Office, confirming that existing UK regulatory frameworks provide a credible foundation for in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing, and setting out the work underway to develop a practical roadmap that will help industry navigate those frameworks with confidence.
UKSA has also funded the BioOrbit PHARM feasibility study, which explored an end-to-end mission for manufacturing pharmaceuticals in microgravity.
The project undertook an initial assessment of how existing regulatory processes could support future in-orbit manufacturing activities.
Together, these activities are helping to build confidence across the value chain.
They help pharmaceutical companies understand how medicines manufactured in orbit can comply with existing regulatory requirements, while giving investors greater confidence that space-enabled pharmaceutical manufacturing has a credible route to market.
What happens next
With In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) one of the UK's four Ministerial priorities for growing the space economy, the UK Space Agency and MHRA are continuing to develop a joint regulatory roadmap to support the adoption and commercialisation of in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Due to be published in Autumn 2026, the roadmap will map each stage of the manufacturing lifecycle against existing UK regulatory frameworks, providing industry with greater clarity and confidence to develop and commercialise new products and services.
This collaborative approach reflects the wider work being delivered through our Unlocking Space Portfolio to accelerate the adoption of space-enabled innovation across health and care.
Alongside supporting the emerging market for in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing, we are working with NHS organisations to explore how satellite technologies can help address operational challenges, from improving connectivity for remote care to creating more resilient healthcare estates.
The dialogue in Berne reinforced the value of this approach. Bringing together end users, technology providers, regulators, investors and international partners helps shape emerging markets, build confidence and address the barriers that prevent innovation reaching real-world use.
The UK Space Agency will contribute to the forthcoming white paper arising from the dialogue, helping to strengthen the shared evidence base and identify practical actions that support the responsible growth of this emerging sector.

Japan space agency conducts Epsilon rocket engine test after failures

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on Thursday conducted a ground test of the Epsilon S small rocket's engine, following two consecutive failures in similar tests in recent years.
The test of the 27-meter-long, solid-fuel rocket was completed as planned, marking a step toward launching an Epsilon S rocket demonstrator by the end of March.
Japan's last successful launch of an Epsilon-series rocket was in 2021.
After explosions during combustion tests in 2023 and 2024, the test of the Epsilon S rocket's second-stage engine at the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture began at 9 a.m. and lasted about 130 seconds.
Since determining the causes of the two previous failures involving the new engine would take time, the test used an older M-35a second-stage motor, in which some components had been replaced with substitute materials.
The M-35a was positioned horizontally for the test, during which JAXA measured thrust, temperature, strain and other data.
"The data are within normal ranges, and we believe the test went well," Project Manager Takayuki Imoto told reporters after the test.
JAXA will spend about two months analyzing the collected data.
Along with the H3 liquid-fueled rocket, Epsilon S is one of two core launch vehicles designated by the Japanese government as essential to maintaining the country's independent satellite launch capability.
The Epsilon S shares components and technology with the H3 rocket to reduce launch costs and improve its competitiveness in the growing satellite launch market.

Chinese Space Firm Launches Commercial Rocket From E. China Sea

China's Gravity-1 launch vehicle, the world's most powerful solid-fuel rocket, has successfully launched from a sea-based platform at a position in the East China Sea, its furthest excursion yet from the operator's shoreside base.
Gravity-1 is a 100-foot-tall rocket with a squat appearance and a 6.5 tonne payload capacity.
It operates from the deck of a specially-adapted heavy lift ship; being solid fueled, it does not require the weight, volume, manning and and risk of a liquid fuel loading system on board.
Since it does not use volatile or cryogenic fuels, it can remain in a ready-to-go state for extended periods of time without human intervention, according to the Haiyang Aerospace Industry Development Center.
This is particularly suitable for at-sea launches further offshore, since the rocket can make the transit with its fuel pre-installed and undisturbed. The operator says that the time delay between final manufacturing and launch readiness is five hours.
This week's launch was the third since 2024, all successful. The rocket lifted off the deck of the heavy load carrier Dong Fang Hang Tian Gang (IMO 9980473) and carried nine satellites to sun-synchronous orbit (SSO), including satellites for remote sensing.
The launch site was at a position about 30-40 nautical miles off the coast of Shanghai, well south of the starting point at the Oriental Space Port in Haiyang, Shandong Province.
Gravity-1 is the first product developed by Chinese firm Orienspace. The company's next ambition is to develop a liquid-fueled central booster, enabling partial reuse of the rocket - essential for lowering cost per launch.
The idea of sea launch services has been around for a long time, but is less common now than the idea of at-sea booster recovery (post-launch).
In the 1990s, an international project to turn an offshore semisubmersible rig into a launch platform succeeded; the Sea Launch partnership was born, and it sent commercial payloads into orbit with Russian Zenit rockets until 2014.
The Russian invasion of Crimea ended key Ukrainian participation in the project, and Sea Launch ceased operations that year.

Kiev’s drones hit at least 13 ships in the Azov and Black Seas on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the country’s drone chief
At least one Turkish sailor was killed and others wounded following a drone strike on a Türkiye-flagged coal bulker off Russia’s port of Novorossiysk on Wednesday, amid intensified Ukrainian attacks on shipping in the Azov and Black seas.
The Istanbul-registered MV Reyhan Sari was carrying coal from Russia’s Taman Port to Trabzon in Türkiye when it was struck by a UAV. A crew member working in the engine room died at the scene of the impact, Türkiye Today reported on Wednesday.
The ship was able to continue under its own power and reach waters off Samsun, two injured crew members were evacuated by helicopter and taken to hospitals in the city, according to a statement from operating company cited by the media.
Speaking to the Ihlas News Agency (IHA), one crew member said that the attack took place around 1:30 AM.
“They hit my cabin with a drone. They pulled me out from under the wreckage,” he reportedly said. “While I was in the sickbay, the second explosion happened. They blew up the deck completely. There were dead and wounded there.”
According to Ukraine’s drone forces commander, Robert Brovdi, Ukrainian forces struck a total of 13 ships on Tuesday and Thursday in the Azov and Black seas, “one tanker, 10 dry cargo ships and two tugboats.”
It was not the first time Turkish ships have been struck by suspected Ukrainian drones. In March, a Ukraine-blacklisted tanker belonging to a Turkish shipping company was struck by drones near Bosphorus after taking on oil at Novorossiysk.
Russia has also escalated strikes on Ukrainian military logistics in the Black Sea and in the Odessa Region in recent weeks, targeting cargo vessels and facilities Moscow believes are involved in delivering materiel or supporting Kiev’s drone operations.
Overnight on Wednesday, Russian forces hit port infrastructure in Odessa used to unload and store military cargo, as well as fuel and lubricant tanks intended for the Ukrainian army, the Russian Defense Ministry has reported.
The Kremlin has stressed that attacks on vessels used to transport military cargo to Ukraine will continue as part of a broader move to sever Kiev’s naval logistics in response to Ukrainian terrorist attacks on Russian civilian and energy infrastructure.

Communist Party Official Killed in Ukrainian Drone Attack in Belgorod

A local Communist Party official in the southwestern city of Belgorod was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack earlier this week, party officials said.
Alexander Logvinov, who headed the Communist Party’s Belgorod city branch, was killed on Tuesday “during a terrorist attack by Ukrainian armed forces against civilian infrastructure,” Russia’s Communist Party said in a statement on its website.
State Duma lawmaker Sergei Gavrilov confirmed that Logvinov was killed inside his car during an attack on a “commercial facility.”
“A drone struck Alexander’s car and he died at the scene from his injuries,” Gavrilov wrote in a post on Telegram.
Regional emergency services reported Tuesday that an unidentified civilian died after a vehicle caught fire following an explosion.
The regional branch of the Communist Party said a farewell ceremony for Logvinov would take place Thursday morning.
Belgorod is located around 35 kilometers (21.5 miles) north of the border with northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region.
On Thursday, Gavrilov also said that 541 civilians have been killed and nearly 4,000 injured in the Belgorod region since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Saudis have invested in moving energy exports through the Red Sea due to the Strait of Hormuz being closed. If the Houthis now try to block this second waterway, energy trade could be at risk.
