Last week we noticed a dramatic rise in compute costs for Gab AI that did not follow the normal trend line of our growth. We now believe this was Chinese state actors attempting to distill American AI models through our API.

We investigated and found a very sophisticated attack that was designed to spin up hundreds of accounts, automatically earn free credits through our Earn credit program, and use our API to make one single call to Anthropic's Fable model and then throw the account away.

Thankfully we had some systems in place already to prevent this type of abuse that did stop the bulk of the attack, but they were still able to drain a few thousand dollars in compute over the course of a few days through some other open areas in our API. We have since closed those gaps and continue to monitor and make refinements to prevent this from happening.
