FIRST ON FOX: Weeks after the Obama Presidential Center’s star-studded opening in Chicago, a subcontractor who previously claimed his company was stiffed for nearly $4 million has shut down operations and laid off 25 union workers.

 

Mike Owen, the owner of Chicago-based Adamson Plumbing Contractors, told Fox News Digital that the financial fallout forced the company to abandon about half a dozen other construction jobs and left it on the verge of collapse. Owen described the shutdown as a painful decision he believed was necessary to save the company from bankruptcy.

 

"Laying off close to 30 people is something that no owner in our industry wants to do," Owen said. "It’s a hard thing to do, especially when you know you can finish them and the company can still make money. But we were put in a pretty bad corner."

Microsoft Confirms Windows Has a Global Device ID You Can't Turn Off

 

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows has a previously unknown Global Device ID (GDID), a permanent, unique digital identifier assigned to Windows devices that can tie a user's actions to their device. This came to light when an alleged member of a notorious hacking group was caught at an airport after Microsoft handed over his GDID to the authorities.

 

Microsoft describes the GDID in a published complaint (via Windows Latest) as "a persistent, device-level identifier designed to uniquely identify an installation of a Windows operating system on a device, either a physical device (e.g., a mobile phone or laptop) or virtual machine, across certain Microsoft services and scenarios."

 

So when you first set up Windows, or register a new Windows device, Microsoft ties that installation's GDID to you. Anything that happens on that system can then be traced back to you, the individual.You can't adjust this in Windows settings.Credit: Jon Martindale

 

Windows Latest discovered that this is generated at the server side, but is also stored locally. It can be found in the Windows registry under: "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IdentityCRL\ExtendedProperties."

 

Although this number remains when you update Windows, it is updated if you reinstall Windows, assigning you a new GDID—though the original one may remain recorded as well.

 

In the case of the alleged hacker, he had used the same device for all his online activities, so even if his identity was hidden through other means, Microsoft was able to tie all those activities together. When Microsoft was able to spot patterns in behavior that matched those of a particular GDID it held on account, it was able to coordinate with authorities to tie the activities to the hacker in question, giving up his identity and leading to his eventual arrest and charges brought against him.

 

This has raised concerns among privacy advocates about Microsoft not providing an opt-out option for this level of tracking.

What GDID Actually Is (And Why You Can't Delete It)

 

This persistent identifier is assigned at installation, bound server-side to your hardware and TPM certificate, and survives every workaround short of a full drive wipe.

 

GDID is a 64-bit identifier assigned when you install Windows. She admitted making a few small, legitimate donations as a “true believer” in liberal causes, including some to El-Sayed. But 47 donations to him alone over two years? The avalanche of $150K total? Impossible. Some were tied to old addresses. Others went to candidates she’d never heard of.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro Challenges Presidential Election – Sues in Colombian Court to Annul Results

 

On August 7, Abelardo de la Espriella is set to be sworn in as the Colombian president in a process known as “empalme,” however, not without a challenge.

 

Outgoing president Gustavo Petro, who was not on the ballot and is termed-limited, has challenged the June runoff victory in the Colombian courts following the suspension of “empalme” by de la Espriella earlier this month, according to the AP.

 

On July 17, Petro sued in Colombia’s Council of State, sitting as its Administrative Litigation Chamber’s Fifth Section. According to the filing, after translation into English, Petro is arguing that election authorities significantly reduced transparency and technical safeguards that were previously used to authenticate and verify official election documents.

 

Polling station documents, E-14s, no longer include key metadata, timestamps, document identifiers, and other digital features that allow independent verification. Petro has asked the court to compel the production of records to include logs, hash values, version histories, protocols, and other system documentation, in order to determine whether the changes were properly authorized and whether they impaired the verifiability of the election.

 

Petro seeks the invalidation of the official results, or, alternatively, he is calling for a new canvass or judicial audit, a forensic inspection of the election systems, production of technical evidence, and targeted recounts and corrections where the court finds the results cannot be independently verified.
